Chapter 7: Shadows of Menace

***TVA RESEARCH DIVISION***

Sora, Riku, and Mobius gathered around a small desk in the bustling TVA Research Division, eagerly awaiting the final reports before their departure to Universe 42. The room was abuzz with activity, the hum of computers and the rustling of papers creating an atmosphere of focused anticipation.

Sora couldn't contain his excitement as he turned to Riku, his eyes shining with curiosity. "Hey, Riku! I've got so many questions about your universe. What was it like? How did everything change?"

Riku chuckled, amused by Sora's boundless enthusiasm. "Well, Sora, Universe 5 was a different place altogether. After our final battle against Xehanort, where you sacrificed yourself, a new darkness emerged. It came in the form of a powerful villain known as Doom."

Sora's brow furrowed, his blue eyes reflecting his confusion. "Doom? Who's that?"

Leaning back, and preparing to paint a picture of the formidable foe that had devastated his universe, Riku began.

"Doom, also known as Doctor Victor von Doom, was once a brilliant scientist and sorcerer who turned to the path of darkness. He became an unstoppable force, harnessing dark magic and technology to bend reality to his will."

Listening intently, The 616 variant's mind couldn't comprehend the scale of the threat. "So, what happened to everyone? Are they okay? Is Kairi alive in your universe?"

Riku's expression softened, a tinge of sorrow in his eyes. "I wish I could say they were all right, Sora. When Doom rose to power, he unleashed his fury upon us. He destroyed our world and eliminated all of our friends—Mickey, Donald, Goofy, Aqua, Terra, Ventus, Roxas, Lea, Xion, Yen Sid... and even Kairi."

A gasp came from Sora's mouth, his hand instinctively gripping the hilt of his Keyblade. The weight of the revelation bore heavily upon his heart, the loss of his friends in another timeline leaving him momentarily speechless.

Riku placed a comforting hand on Sora's shoulder, offering solace amidst the sorrowful truth. "I know it's hard to fathom, Sora, but in the face of such darkness, we must find strength. We have a chance to prevent such a fate from befalling other universes, including the one where our Kairi variant resides."

"Leave it to you, Sora, to bring up the heavy questions." Mobius said with a sense of wit. "Can't say I envy you, Riku, having to carry the weight of such a world on your shoulders."

Riku smirked, his eyes reflecting the resilience he had gained from his trials. "Well, Mobius, it hasn't been easy, but it's made me who I am—a warrior determined to protect what's left of the multiverse."

Still trying to process Riku's story about Universe 5 and wrap his mind around the concept. Sora needed to clear something up.

"But Mobius, this must be a mistake?" "Doom taking over Universe 5 surely was a branched timeline? Surely it was this Doom guy being a deviant? Why wouldn't the TVA intervene?"

Mobius leaned against a nearby console, his gaze fixed on Sora. "Ah, Sora, that's where the Sacred Timeline gets a bit tricky. You see, the TVA's role is to maintain the Sacred Timeline, ensuring that it follows its predetermined course. While Doom's rise to power may seem like a branching event, it's actually an integral part of Universe 5's script, its destined path."

"So, the TVA just let Doom take over, knowing the destruction he would cause?" Sora asked with shock and horror.

Mobius nodded, a hint of understanding in his eyes. "In a way, yes. The TVA doesn't interfere with the natural progression of a universe's timeline unless it branches off from the predetermined events. Doom's rule, as dark as it was, was part of the natural course of Universe 5. It's a difficult thing to accept, but it's the way the multiverse operates."

Riku chimed in, his voice calm and measured. "It's hard to comprehend, Sora, but even in the face of darkness, some events must play out to maintain the balance of the multiverse. It's a delicate dance between fate and free will.

Glancing at Riku, Sora asked another question with a mix of curiosity and concern in his eyes.

"Riku, what about the Avengers in your universe? Did they try to stop Doom?"

A big sigh came from the older and grizzled variant of Riku, his gaze drifting off for a moment as he recalled the memories of his fallen universe.

"They tried, Sora. The Avengers fought with all their might, but Doom's power was unmatched. He was cunning, ruthless, and had an army of loyal followers at his command. Despite their valiant efforts, they couldn't prevent his rise to ultimate power."

As Riku spoke, Sora noticed a somber tone in his voice, a weight that bore down on his shoulders. Sora placed a comforting hand on Riku's arm, offering him silent support.

Breaking the silence from this rather dampening conversation, Christine Palmer approached the table with a stack of research papers in her hands. Her expression was a mix of determination and anticipation. Sora's eyes lit up with curiosity as he eagerly awaited the news she was about to deliver.

"Alright, folks, I have some good news," Christine began, her voice filled with a hint of excitement. "The research on Universe 42 and the Kairi Variant is finally complete."

Sora's excitement grew, his gaze fixed on Christine as he leaned in closer. "That's great! So, what did you find?"

Christine placed the papers on the table, arranging them neatly. "Well, according to our analysis, Universe 42 is a world of immense danger. It's a place where chaos reigns, and time itself is unstable."

"Unstable time? That doesn't sound good," said Riku with some concern in his tone.

Acknowledging Riku's observation, The TVA researcher spoke. "You're right, Riku. It's a challenging environment to navigate. The flow of time is fractured, and there are constant temporal anomalies. It's as if the fabric of reality is tearing apart."

Sora's expression turned serious as he listened intently. "And the Kairi Variant? Did you find any information on her whereabouts?"

Flipping through the research papers, The Palmer of Universe 13 scanned the words on the pages. "Yes, we did. It seems that the Kairi Variant we're searching for has become entangled in the chaotic web of Universe 42. She possesses unique abilities that could be of great importance to our mission."

Sora's determination burned brighter, his heart yearning to reunite with his lost friend. "We have to find her, no matter the risks. She's counting on us."

Interjecting with his serious tone, Mobius yet tinged with a touch of humor. "Well, it won't be a walk in the park, that's for sure. But if anyone can navigate the chaotic mess of Universe 42, it's you, Sora."

Sora grinned, feeling a surge of confidence. "You can count on me, Mobius. We won't let the chaos of that universe stop us from saving Kairi and restoring balance."

Christine glanced at the team, her gaze filled with admiration. "I have faith in all of you. With your combined skills, bravery, and determination, I believe we have a chance to rescue the Kairi Variant and bring her back to safety."

Riku's eyes met Sora's, a shared resolve passing between them. "We won't let anything stand in our way. We've faced countless challenges before, and we'll face this one head-on."

Turning to Christine, Sora need somemore answers from the team's research.

"Christine, do you have any information on the Kairi Variant's last known location in Universe 42? Where was she before all of this?"

Flipping through the research papers, Palmer scanned the information carefully.

"According to our records, the Kairi Variant's last known location in Universe 42 was Radiant Garden. It seems to be a place deeply connected to her existence, in every timeline".

"Radiant Garden..." Sora murmured, his voice filled with a mixture of nostalgia and determination. "That's where Kairi grew up before she came to Destiny Islands. We know that world, Riku."

Riku nodded, a solemn expression on his face. "Yeah, it holds a special place in all our hearts. We need to find her, Sora, and bring her back to where she belongs."

Mobius, never one to miss an opportunity for a quip, smirked and held the research file in his hands. "Well, well, Radiant Garden, huh? Sounds like a place where you'll find more than just flowers blooming."

"You know, Universe 42's instability could be a result of a catalyst," Even pondered walking over to the group, his brow furrowed in deep contemplation. "There might be something or someone behind the disturbances, amplifying the chaos and affecting the Sacred Timeline."

Christine's eyes sparkled with intrigue as she added, "We should investigate further, analyze the anomalies and search for any trace of this catalyst. It could be the key to understanding what has caused the Kairi Variant's displacement."

"An excellent idea, Doctor Palmer," noted Even with a smile on his face. "Whilst Sora and Riku travel to this Universe, we can continue to dive deeper into research".

Sora nodded, his determination resurfacing. "Let's gather any information we can on this catalyst and the situation in Radiant Garden. We need to be prepared for anything we might encounter there."

With their minds focused and a renewed sense of purpose, the team set to work, delving deeper into the research files, analyzing data, and sharing insights. Each piece of information brought them closer to understanding the intricate web of events and the forces at play.

Radiant Garden beckoned, a world shrouded in mystery and significance. Sora, Riku, Mobius prepared themselves for the journey ahead, knowing that the path they were about to tread held both answers and challenges. As they continued their investigation and braced themselves for the unknown, they couldn't help but feel a glimmer of hope that their efforts would lead them to the missing Kairi Variant and the restoration of balance in Universe 42.

***FLASHBACK - UNIVERSE 5 - NEW YORK CITY***

The once bustling streets of New York City lay in ruin, their vibrant energy replaced by a haunting silence. Buildings stood as broken skeletons, their walls charred and crumbling, a testament to the fierce battle that had unfolded here. The sky, once filled with the bright lights of a thriving metropolis, now hung heavy with dark clouds, casting a gloomy pallor over the scene.

Riku's heart sank as he surveyed the devastation before him. The fallen bodies of the heroes of light, his friends and allies, littered the battlefield like discarded toys. King Mickey, Donald, Goofy, Aqua, Terra, Ventus, Lea, Xion, Roxas, and Isa—all of them had fought valiantly, but their efforts were in vain against the overwhelming power of Doctor Doom.

The Avengers, Earth's mightiest heroes, lay defeated alongside them. Captain America, his shield shattered, lay motionless, a symbol of unwavering determination extinguished. Thor, the God of Thunder, his hammer Mjolnir lying abandoned, no longer pulsating with divine power. The Hulk, once an unstoppable force of rage and strength, now lay lifeless, his green-skinned body still and unresponsive. Ant-Man and The Wasp, their tiny forms crushed beneath the weight of doom. Captain Marvel, her cosmic powers unable to save her from this fate. Wolverine, known for his resilience and healing factor, succumbed to the onslaught.

Even three of the four of the Fantastic Four, the first family of superheroes, had not escaped Doom's wrath. Johnny Storm, the Human Torch, lay sprawled on the ground, his flames extinguished, a charred and lifeless figure. Susan Storm, the Invisible Woman, no longer shielded from harm, her body broken and fragile. Ben Grimm, the ever-loving blue-eyed Thing, was now motionless, his rocky exterior cracked and shattered.

Amidst the carnage, only three figures remained standing—Tony Stark, Kairi, and Reed Richards. Their bodies bore the marks of battle, bruises and blood marring their once pristine appearances. Iron Man's armor was battered and dented, a mere shell of its former glory. Mr. Fantastic's elastic form trembled, weakened from the relentless assault he had endured. And Kairi, her expression a mix of defiance and fear, stood tall, though her stance wavered under the weight of the chaos surrounding her.

But Doom, his armor radiating an ominous aura, stood unscathed, his triumphant smirk visible even through the wreckage. With a flick of his wrist, he summoned a nanotech sword from his armor, its gleaming edge reflecting the sorrowful landscape.

Riku's heart pounded in his chest as he witnessed the merciless scene. Each fallen hero had fought with all their might, their hopes and dreams crushed beneath the relentless advance of Doom. The once bright beacon of hope, the city that never slept, now lay in ruins, a testament to the unchecked power and ambition of one man.

The battle had been a cataclysmic clash of wills, but in the end, Doom's thirst for power and control had prevailed. As Riku's gaze shifted back to Kairi, he felt a surge of determination, a resolve to avenge their fallen comrades and restore balance to the universe.

In this shattered world, where darkness had consumed even the brightest lights, Riku vowed to stand firm, to fight alongside those who still believed in the power of light. He would face Doom, the embodiment of evil, and ensure that his reign of darkness would not go unchallenged.

***END OF FLASHBACK***

Riku opened his eyes and turned to face Sora, his expression heavy with the weight of his past. Sora could sense the sorrow etched on his friend's face and felt a pang of empathy deep within his own heart.

"Sora," Riku began, his voice tinged with a mixture of melancholy and determination, "when Doom took over my universe, I fought him. Over and over again, I battled against the Latveria machine, trying to protect what little remained of our world. But it was a fight I couldn't win alone."

Sora listened intently, his eyes locked on Riku, his heart aching for the pain his friend had endured.

"In the end," Riku continued, his voice wavering slightly, "I was alone. You, Kairi, and the rest of our friends were gone. There was no one left to share the burden with me."

Sora's eyes widened with realization. He understood the depths of Riku's solitude, the crushing weight of his responsibilities without the support of their cherished bond.

"But then," Riku continued, his voice growing steadier, "the TVA found me. They saw something in me, Sora. They saw the courage and potential to make a difference, to help prevent timelines from spiraling into chaos. They offered me a chance to join their ranks and fight against the variants that threaten the stability of the Sacred Timeline."

Sora's brows furrowed, his curiosity piqued. "How long have you been away from home, Riku?"

Riku's gaze dropped for a moment before meeting Sora's gaze once again. "Too long, Sora. Time has become a blur. In that shattered world, with Doom's darkness reigning supreme, it felt like an eternity. But in the grand scheme of things, I suppose it's been years."

The 616 variant's heart sank as he witnessed the weight Riku carried on his shoulders. He couldn't help but feel a deep sense of admiration for his friend's resilience and determination. With a gentle squeeze on Riku's shoulder, he offered a comforting presence.

"Riku," Sora said, his voice filled with empathy, "I can only imagine how difficult it must have been for you, facing such darkness alone. But remember, let your heart be your guiding key. We'll find Kairi and bring her back. And together, we'll uncover the mysteries behind Universe 42 and put an end to these anomalies."

Riku's lips curled into a wistful smile, a flicker of nostalgia shining in his eyes. "Your optimism, Sora," he said, his voice laced with a mix of fondness and longing, "I've missed it. It's good to have you here, reminding me of the light even in the darkest of times."

Sora returned the smile, a spark of excitement igniting within him. "Well, get ready, Riku! We've got a job to do and a friend to save. Time to bring some light back into Universe 42 and make things right."

The two friends shared a moment of camaraderie, their shared determination fueling their resolve. They knew the path ahead wouldn't be easy, but they had each other, and together, they would face whatever challenges awaited them.

***UNIVERSE 42 - RADIANT GARDEN ***

Radiant Garden in Universe 42 was a haunting shell of its former glory. Once a vibrant and bustling world, it now lay in ruins, its streets cracked and buildings reduced to rubble. The cold wind swept through the deserted square, carrying with it an eerie silence that hung heavy in the air.

Kairi, the 616 variant, stood alone in the heart of this desolate place. Her piercing cerulean eyes scanned the surroundings, taking in the devastation that surrounded her. The central square, once a hub of activity and joy, now felt like a graveyard of forgotten dreams. As she looked up, her gaze landed on a towering statue, a solemn reminder of a time when this universe still had hope. It depicted none other than herself, as the savior who had vanquished Thanos in this timeline.

"Thanos?" Kairi thought to herself. She never met this Titan in her own time. She wondered how she saved this universe, but how the hell did it turn into hell?

Confusion and unease gnawed at Kairi's heart. This was not her Radiant Garden, and the worlds she had encountered so far were all in states of disarray. She couldn't comprehend the reasons behind the shattered realities, the chaos that had befallen this universe . Questions swirled in her mind, seeking answers that seemed just out of reach.

Suddenly, a presence made itself known, creeping out from the shadows. Kairi's senses heightened, her heart racing with a mixture of fear and anticipation. She turned, her eyes widening in horror as she laid eyes on the figure that emerged before her.

"I found you, variant!" the mysterious being hissed, their voice dripping with malice. Their appearance was twisted and distorted, exuding an aura of darkness that sent a chill down Kairi's spine. It was clear that this entity harbored ill intent, and its malevolent gaze bore into her soul.

Kairi's mind raced, her instincts urging her to run, to seek refuge from this unknown adversary. Yet, a resolute determination flickered within her eyes. She was no stranger to facing darkness, and she wouldn't cower in fear. She stood her ground and summoned her Keyblade, her grip tightening on the weapon, ready to defend herself against this new threat.

***TVA RESEARCH DIVISION***

The atmosphere in the TVA Research Division was tense as Ienzo, Dillian, and Even delved deeper into their analysis of Universe 42. They had been tirelessly combing through data, searching for any clues that could shed light on the anomalous events plaguing the universe and the appearance of the variant Kairi.

Their concentration was abruptly interrupted by an alarm that blared through the facility, alerting them to a sudden surge in the branching timeline of Universe 42. The urgency in the room intensified as Ienzo swiftly accessed the computer systems, his fingers dancing across the keyboard to gather real-time information.

As the holographic screens flickered to life, the team's eyes widened in astonishment and concern. The images displayed before them revealed Kairi standing face to face with a formidable and ominous figure. It was a chilling sight that sent shivers down their spines.

The figure exuded an aura of darkness and malevolence, causing the timeline's branches to proliferate rapidly. The very presence of this enigmatic being seemed to fuel the chaotic expansion of Universe 42's divergence. The situation was escalating at an alarming rate, pushing the universe dangerously close to the precipice of a full-fledged timeline emergence.

Ienzo's analytical mind worked swiftly as he absorbed the data flowing before him. He attempted to piece together the fragments of information to make sense of the dangerous encounter unfolding in Universe 42. The cold and eerie atmosphere of the room mirrored the gravity of the situation.

The research team shared concerned glances, fully aware of the implications that a rapidly growing branch had on the stability of the Sacred Timeline. It was imperative that Sora, Riku, and Mobius were informed of the dire circumstances and the imminent threat faced by Kairi.

With a firm determination, Ienzo knew he needed to relay the urgency of the situation to Mobius, his voice tinged with a mix of anxiety and determination. Every passing moment brought them closer to a critical junction where the fabric of the timeline could be irreparably torn apart.

***TVA HQ CORRIDOR***

As Sora, Riku, and Mobius strode purposefully through the corridors of the TVA, their steps filled with determination, they were accompanied by a group of TVA armed agents. Each agent was clad in tactical gear, their weapons at the ready, prepared for any threat that awaited them in Universe 42.

The tension in the air was palpable, a sense of urgency hanging over the group as they approached the portal that would transport them to the troubled universe. They were moments away from stepping into the unknown, ready to confront the dangers and unravel the mysteries that awaited them.

Amidst the anticipation, Mobius' radio crackled to life, and a voice cut through the silence with urgency. It was Ienzo, his tone grave and his words laced with concern.

"Mobius, we have a situation here. Someone is with Kairi, and they appear to be dangerous. Additionally, the branching timeline is exhibiting erratic behavior, increasing at an alarming rate."

Mobius brought the radio to his lips, his brow furrowing with worry. "Ienzo, what do you mean someone is with Kairi? Can you provide any details?"

There was a brief pause before Ienzo's voice responded, filled with apprehension. "We don't have much information at the moment. Our surveillance shows an unidentified figure engaging Kairi in a confrontational manner. The individual possesses an aura of darkness and power. They seem to be a significant catalyst for the timeline's rapid divergence."

Sora's grip tightened on his Keyblade, his concern for Kairi evident in his eyes. "We can't waste any more time. We need to find her and ensure her safety."

Riku, ever composed, nodded in agreement. "Agreed, Sora. Kairi needs our help, and we won't let anything happen to her."

The armed agents exchanged glances, their resolve firm. They understood the gravity of the situation and the importance of their mission. Together, they formed a united front, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.

Mobius relayed instructions to the agents, his voice steady. "Stay alert, everyone. We're walking into a volatile situation. Our priority is to locate Kairi and neutralize any threats. We must stabilize the timeline and bring it back into alignment with the Sacred Timeline."

As they approached the portal, the shimmering energies swirling before them, Sora turned to Riku and Mobius. "Remember, we're in this together. Let's find Kairi and bring her home safely."

Riku gave a reassuring nod, his gaze resolute. "Absolutely, Sora. We won't let her down."

With determination in their hearts and a shared mission to protect their friend, Sora, Riku, Mobius, and the team of armed agents stepped through the portal, venturing into the unknown of Universe 42. The chapter concludes with a sense of anticipation, as the heroes brace themselves for the imminent dangers and challenges that await them in their quest to save Kairi and restore balance to the fractured timeline.

***UNIVERSE 42 - RADIANT GARDEN ***

In the desolate and broken landscape of Radiant Garden in Universe 42, Kairi stood her ground, her eyes filled with determination and defiance. Before her stood a figure cloaked in darkness, their presence radiating with a palpable sense of power. Shadows seemed to dance around them, adding to the aura of menace and mystery.

As the confrontation intensified, Kairi's voice rang out with unwavering resolve. "You failed to capture me last time, what luck do you have now? You faile!."

A low, rumbling chuckle emanated from the figure, the sound filled with an unsettling mix of confidence and arrogance. With deliberate steps, they emerged from the shadows, revealing themselves in all their imposing grandeur.

Tall and imposing, his presence commanded attention. His armor gleamed with a dark, metallic sheen, etched with intricate designs that spoke of their mastery over science and sorcery. The crimson cape billowed behind him, lending an air of regality to his ominous figure. The mask that concealed his face exuded an aura of intimidation, leaving his true expression and intentions hidden from view.

With a menacing stride, he closed the distance between himself and Kairi. Shadows seemed to coil around him, emphasizing his dominance over the darkness. The air crackled with an electric tension, and the weight of his presence hung heavy in the atmosphere.

As Kairi locked eyes with this formidable figure, a sense of foreboding filled her. She sensed the depth of his power, the calculated ruthlessness that lay beneath his confident demeanor. Yet, she refused to falter in the face of his malevolence.

And then, with a voice that carried an unmistakable air of authority, the man spoke, his words punctuated by an unwavering resolve.

"Doctor Doom does not fail!"
