Surprises
Chapter 15
Hannah and Katie ate the entire pizza on their own. Shockingly, they were both fine with Maddie, Gia and were excited to meet Oliver. Katie went in for her shower and Mike began wondering where the two girls would sleep.
"Mike; why don't you move the bassinet in your room. I can sleep in there and the girls can sleep in my room." Maddie suggested.
"I can sleep on the couch." Mike said.
"Or…we can just sleep together…not…you know what I mean." Maddie suggested.
"If you're ready? I know Seth put you through hell. I promise, I won't hurt you. Besides, you just had a baby. I wouldn't." Mike asked.
"Mike, we both know where this is headed between you and I. No, I am not quite ready for everything that entails but I can handle sleeping next to you until we come up with a better solution for the girls." Maddie said.
"Thank you." Mike said. He cupped her cheek before going in and getting the bassinet and sleeping baby. Maddie moved some of Gia's supplies into his room and he smiled at both girls.
"Daddy, I know you want to visit. We are both so tired." Katie said.
"We will talk when you girls are ready. You both just sleep. And tomorrow, I'll get Oliver." Mike said.
"And be warned, he's like a hurricane." Maddie remarked.
"Hopefully, Gia sleeps good." Hannah said. She was already fascinated by the baby and had held her for several minutes.
"For all of our sakes." Mike said. He gave both girls kisses on the forehead. "If you need me, wake me up, okay? I'm just down the hall and if you hear the baby, don't worry. We'll get her." Mike said.
"Sleep tight, girls." Maddie told them. She left them alone and Mike pulled an extra blanket out of the closet.
"If you need this; here you go. You girls sleep as late as you want. I'll have breakfast ready when you get up." Mike said.
"Thank you, Daddy." Katie said.
"You're welcome." Mike answered. He gave both girls another kiss before leaving them alone. Before going back to his own room, he made sure the exterior doors were locked, all the lights were off and he even looked towards Kara's house to make sure all was okay. Finally, he walked back into his room to find Maddie nursing Gia.
"I'm hoping she'll sleep a few hours." Maddie remarked.
"I hope so. Do you need anything? I'm going to take a shower." Mike asked.
"I am good. Thank you." Maddie said.
"You're welcome." Mike answered. He grabbed a pair of pajama pants and t-shirt and headed in for his own shower.
Mike had forgotten what it was like to sleep next to Maddie. She cuddled as close as she could but slung her ice-cold feet over his leg. Finally, he untangled himself and got a pair of socks from his drawer. He gently shook her awake and handed her the socks.
"Please?" Mike begged. She laughed and sat up to put the socks on.
"Was I too close?" Maddie asked.
"You were fine. Your feet were not." Mike said.
"I forget how cold they are. How is she?" Maddie asked, pointing at Gia.
"She's smiling in her sleep so I think she is just fine." Mike said.
"Good." Maddie said. She had finished putting the socks on and Mike slipped back into bed next to her. She immediately wrapped her arms around him and tucked one foot between his knees. "I hope this is okay?" Maddie asked.
"Its just fine." Mike answered. Maddie nodded and then put her head on his chest.
"And this?" Maddie asked.
"Just fine. And this?" Mike said as Maddie raised up and gave him a long kiss on the lips.
"Just fine." Maddie repeated. He kissed her again before smiling down at her.
"Good." Mike answered. He had to admit; he was happier than he had been in a long, long time.
