(S1EP5 - Bloody Mary)
Alina was disgusted by the hands of her new victim. Every time they began to slide along her thighs, the young woman had to resist the urge to catch them and break each fingers one by one. She was therefore relieved to be able to take action when she saw the man in his early 40s, finish his fifth beer of the night in one go. She pretended to observe her surroundings, and stopped her eyes at the dart board close to them. She then excitedly clapped her hands and smiled like an innocent girl. "Is that the game with the little arrows? I've always wanted to play that! Can you teach me? Please!"
Her imploring eyes managed to seduce the man who immediately got up from his chair, like a hero about to accomplish his duty, and gestured to Alina to follow him. He quickly picked up the darts from the board, and joined Alina behind the oche. He immediately slid behind her, wrapped one arm around her waist, and Alina rolled her eyes when she felt his coarse beard brushing against her cheek. That guy smelled really bad. But she endured and let him put a dart in her hand, to slowly guide it and help her throw. From the way they were standing, and the roughness in the man's hand, the dart should've at least landed on the outer ring area, but Alina managed to aim for a triple. When the dart hit the board, she jumped out of the man's arms and clapped her hands in excitement again. "Woah you're so strong! That was amazing!"
Alina giggled like a naive girl and put her hands on the man's chest. "I wonder what else you're strong at."
Her victim let out a loud laugh, and just as he was leaning over to kiss her, they were interrupted by another man's voice. "Nice shot!"
They turned around and faced the newcomer. "Nice lady too." Alina couldn't help but smile at Dean Winchester's seductive wink. She was finally enjoying this moment. "Mind if I give it a shot?" He asked the man, clearly angry from the interruption.
Alina gave Dean an unimpressed look. "You think you can do better than him?"
"Oh sweetheart you have no idea."
His smile... Alina shook her head in amusement and turned back to the man with the same puppy eyes as before. She was tempting him again, and succeeding again. His male pride was in danger because of that new young guy, and he couldn't refuse the challenge in front of the hot girl he was about to bring home.
"You know what?" Dean added when he felt they were about to win. "50 bucks I can make her hit the bull's-eye."
Alina faked a mocking laugh, and the now confident man joined her. "Let's make it a 100 bucks. And if you make her hit the bull's-eye, you get her too."
That was disgusting. Alina just wanted to get as far away from that guy as possible. So she was relieved when he finally let Dean take his place. She smiled at him and turned to face the board once again, but this time, when she felt the strong hand on her stomach, and the well-shaped body pressed against her back, she simply pretended to clumsily lose her balance, pressing herself against him even more. She could feel his grin right next to her ear and let him guide her arm. She clearly was able to throw the dart herself, but she loved it when he wrapped his hand around hers and stayed in that position for a few more seconds. Pretending to concentrate, letting their breaths take the same rhythm. Alina closed her eyes for a short moment when she felt Dean's breath softly caressing the few strands of her hair falling near her face. Then finally, they threw the dart. And without any surprise, it landed right in the middle of the board.
Alina, still in character, acted hysterically and turned around to joyfully jump at Dean's neck. The hunter laughed, kept his arm around her as if to mark its territory, before proudly turning to his opponent and raise an open hand in expectation. The frustrated loser, quickly grabbed the money in his pocket, crushed it into Dean's hand and left while openly insulting the two of them. Alina watched him leave with a smirk, then took the money that Dean was still counting.
"Sorry Winchester, I think that's mine."
"Really? 'Cause I thought it was a team work."
"It is. That's why we both get half of the price. Remember? I get the money, you get the girl."
Dean rolled his eyes in a playful way. "Frenchy, you already sleep in my bed every night."
"See? That's what I call winning."
She chuckled, kissed him on the cheek, and was first to leave the bar. When they both returned to the Impala, they found Sam sitting in the passenger's seat, with a newspaper and the usual red pen they used to circle every possible new cases.
"Found anything?" Alina asked him from the backseat.
"Yeah I think we got a new job. Steven Shoemaker in Toledo."
"Toledo?" Dean repeated. "We can be there in a few hours."
"Great! 'Cause earning all that money was exhausting, wake me up when we get there!" Alina laid down and closed her eyes, opening them back when she heard Sam's reply.
"I can't believe you guys did this scamming thing again."
"It's not a scam!" She protested. "These men are disgusting, and we never force them to bet money."
Sam turned to Dean. "And you're okay with her flirting with these guys?"
"She's a grown woman Sammy."
"Man, what happened to overprotective Dean? I guess she just had to kiss you once to tame you completely."
"She didn't tame me!"
"Oh I definitely tamed you Winchester. Just admit it, you're under my charm now."
Dean wanted to say a million things to defend himself, but with Sam and Alina against him, he knew he could never win this one. So he simply groaned and started the engine, making the two friends smile. It had been days since that night outside the bar. Alina couldn't admit it to herself, but she was still thinking about it. Especially when she'd wake up in the middle of the night, right next to him.
But it was Dean, she just couldn't feel this way about him.
THE NEXT DAY
The three hunters finally made it to their new destination. Dean was parking the car in front of the large hospital, when Sam who was sleeping next to him, started to move and talk in panic. "No…No…"
Alina and Dean shared a same worried look. Alina leaned towards the front seats as Dean tried to wake his brother up. "Sam, wake up." He shook the sleeping boy's arm. "Wake up!"
Sam finally opened his eyes, startled and confused. He sat up and looked around, finding Alina's concerned face behind him. "You okay?" She asked him, knowing that his reply would be another lie.
Sam nodded. "Yeah. I take it I was having a nightmare."
"Yeah, another one." Dean said.
"Hey, at least I got some sleep."
"You know, sooner or later we're gonna have to talk about this."
Alina sighed and punched Dean in the arm, getting a surprised look from him, like he was saying "Why did you do that?!"
And she also replied with her own eyes. "Don't push him!"
"He can't sleep!"
"He can't talk about it now!"
"Don't you feel better now that we know everything?!"
"Hey! This is not about me! This is about Sam! If he needs time, we'll give him time!"
"Guys?" They both turned to Sam, who was now looking at them like they were from another planet. "What are you doing?"
Of course, their silent conversation couldn't look anything else but weird from the outside. So Alina simply smiled at him and gave him the newspaper. "Anyway, we're here."
"Welcome to Toledo, Ohio." Dean announced to complete her statement.
Sam took the newspaper with Steven Shoemaker's obituary circled. "So what do you think really happened to this guy?"
"That's what we're gonna find out." Dean told him as he opened his door. "Let's go."
The eldest sibling got out of the car, leaving the two friends inside. Alina put her hand on Sam's shoulder before he could follow his brother outside. "Hey Sammy? Don't be alone, okay?"
Her friend sadly smiled at her and took the hand she had placed on his shoulder in his. "We're not alone."
"Yeah…" She squeezed his hand a little more, before they finally joined Dean outside the car, so they could all head up to the building.
It didn't take them too long to find the room they were looking for, the Morgue. Inside were two desk. Alina smirked when she saw Dean's face as he quickly read the nameplate on the empty one. 'Dr. D Feiklowicz.'
It just had to be his turn to do the talking.
They then stopped in front of the second desk where the Morgue Technician was sitting. "Hey." He lazily greeted them.
"Hey." Dean replied.
"Can I help you?"
Sam and Alina let Dean introduce them. "Yeah. We're the, uh...med students."
"Sorry?"
"Oh, Doctor…Figlavitch didn't tell you?"
Alina bit her cheeks to prevent herself from laughing, or even smiling. She had to stay focused.
"We talked to him on the phone. He…we're from Ohio State. He's supposed to show us the Shoemaker corpse. It's for our paper."
As expected, the Morgue Technician didn't seem convinced by his speech. "Well, I'm sorry, he's at lunch."
"Oh well he said…" Dean was clearly struggling but Alina refused to help him. She enjoyed watching him stutter like that. "…Oh, well, you know, it doesn't matter. You don't mind just showing us the body, do you?"
"Sorry, I can't. Doc will be back in an hour. You can wait for him if you want."
"An hour? Ooh. We gotta be heading back to Columbus by then."
Dean looked at Sam for some support, which he got in the form of a simple "Yeah" from his brother, to confirm his story.
"Look, man, this paper's like half our grade, so if you don't mind helping us out…"
"Look, man..." The Morgue Technician let them wait in expectation for a moment, before giving his final answer. "No."
Dean laughed a little, unamused and about to kill someone. He turned towards the two others with a fake smile on his lips as he mumbled. "I'm gonna hit him in his face I swear."
Sam tapped his arm and took the lead to prevent an eventual fight. He stepped in front of Alina and Dean, and opened his wallet. The two friends behind him watched him pull out the money they had earned the night before, and Alina jumped in front of him before he could give it away. She grabbed his arm to stop him and took the money from his hand. "Hold on, we can't do that. Obviously this guy is an honest worker and I don't wanna cause him any trouble."
She angrily stared at Sam, then turned to the Morgue Technician with the biggest smile on her face. "I'm so sorry for these two, we've been working so hard on our paper. Anyway, thank you for your…" She stopped for a moment, pretending to see for the first time the book that was on the side of his desk. It had a very familiar cover, and she'd actually noticed it the moment she'd entered the room. "Wait…Is that the sixth Harry Potter book? The Half-Blood Prince?"
The Morgue Technician's expression instantly changed. He seemed rather impressed that the young woman had recognized the book from where she was standing. "Yeah. Did you read it?"
"With that freaking paper? We live next to a theater and I haven't even been able to go see The Goblet Of Fire!"
"What? It's been out for a month now."
"I know! I can't believe I'm missing this! I mean I'm probably gonna cry at the end anyway because of…"
"Cedric?" He finished before she could.
"Yeah! Like, why would J.K. do this to him, and let someone like Umbridge be rescued by Dumbledore himself from the centaurs!"
"Right?! I couldn't stand her either! Why isn't she dead yet?!"
"Yeah? Well my ex boyfriend liked her. I can't believe I dated that jerk for months. I even dressed myself as Hermione for his birthday."
"Really? Shit…"
"Don't get me started. He works at a Morgue too and I just can't believe we're gonna have to go see him now."
"For your paper?"
"Yeah well he was our Plan B…"
Alina finally turned around to face the Winchesters. The two brothers were looking at her in complete astonishment from the very beginning of her little act. And it wasn't over.
"Guys I'm so sorry, it's my fault. I didn't wanna see James so I made you come all the way here for nothing. I guess he was right, I'm nothing but a freaking nuisance…"
"No you're not!" The Morgue Technician suddenly stood up from his chair with indignation.
Alina grinned, winked at her friends and put on a sad face when she faced the man again. "Damnit, I'm sorry. You probably have a lot of work to do and I'm taking your time with my stupid stories."
"No. I…I guess if you're quick I can let you have a look at the corpse."
"What?" Alina faked her surprise. "No! I can't let you do that!"
"No it's okay follow me."
And just like that, he left the room, Alina proudly following him. The brothers watched her walking away from them, until Dean grabbed Sam when he was about to leave. "What was that?"
"Alina saving your money?"
"Yeah I know but…how did she do that?"
"Doesn't she also flirt with these men you two are scamming?"
Dean rolled his eyes at the thought. He didn't really like letting Alina take this kind of risk, but he also enjoyed spending time with her. Watching her get so excited by their team work. "Yeah but they're always completely wasted, it's not that hard."
Sam frowned then chuckled at his brother. "You do realize that men don't need to drink to be attracted to Alina. She's beautiful, and smart. You were sober when you kissed her."
"She kissed me." Dean corrected his brother for the tenth time ever since that night.
"Yeah." Sam simply gave him little taps on the shoulder and went to join his friend, ignoring his brother's voice behind him.
"What do you mean 'Yeah'? Sammy! Come back here!"
Once they arrived in the Morgue, the Morgue Technician pulled back the sheet over the victim's face, letting them see his missing eyes. They'd read in the newspaper that his eyes were bleeding, but they were now finding out that they were actually almost liquefied. No sign of struggle, and besides his daughter, he was all alone when it happened. Even the doctor couldn't find the cause of death, because of all the blood the poor man had in his skull. Intense cerebral bleeding.
Exploding eyeballs were definitely a first for the Morgue Technician who couldn't give them a proper explanation.
The hunters watched the body, trying to find out if this could be their new job, and Dean was once again the first to talk. "Hey, think we could take a look at that police report? You know for...our paper."
"I'm not really supposed to show you that." He seemed confident, until his eyes landed on Alina's disappointed face. "But…I mean…Yeah I could probably give you a copy."
"Really?" Alina smiled again. "Thank you so much!"
The more Dean was looking at her, the more he realized that Sam was right. She was beautiful and smart. She didn't even have to try hard to seduce a man. She had the physical advantages, and yet she knew when to use her knowledge to get what she wanted from men.
Once they got out of the hospital with the police report, Alina yawned and stretched her arms. "I almost fell asleep back there. I really need a coffee if I wanna survive the rest of this job." She turned to the boys in amusement, but her smile fell as they only kept staring at her in silence. "What?" She worriedly asked.
"That was amazing." Sam complimented her.
The girl felt relieved in an instant. "That's it? Well I had to be amazing Sammy, you were about to give him our money! And by the way, if that guy cried for Cedric Diggory, he's gonna need therapy for the end of that book."
She kept smiling, then looked at Dean who was still silent. "Oh please Winchester, don't act so surprised. I do the same with you all the time, you just don't notice it."
"Wait…you do?" He asked her, trying to think of a moment she could've manipulated him like that.
"Si beau, et pourtant si prévisible…" (So handsome, and yet so predictable…) She shook her head and followed Sam towards the car. Leaving once again, a confused and screaming Dean behind.
"I said, enough with the French!"
When the hunters got to Mr Shoemaker's house, they found many people attending the funeral, men wearing black suits, women wearing black dresses.
"Feel like we're underdressed." Dean whispered to the two others.
"At least I'm wearing black." And Alina was right. She wasn't wearing anything else than black, her favorite color. But Dean didn't hesitate to point out the issue.
"You're wearing slim jeans, with a lace tank top and a leather jacket. I don't think that's really funeral appropriate."
"That Morgue Technician seemed to like it."
"Oh I never said I didn't like it."
They smiled at each other, until Sam stopped right in front of them. "It's a funeral guys, could you two stop flirting for five minutes so we can find Mr Shoemaker's daughter?"
Dean and Alina gave him two pairs of outraged eyes, then followed him towards the back. When they got to the backyard, a man pointed them towards the four girls sitting in the middle. Donna and Lily Shoemaker being two of them. The hunters started to ask some basic questions to the eldest, pretending to be her dad's colleagues. And after asking about symptoms, the youngest, Lily, assured them it wasn't a stroke. She was convinced it was her fault, and they had to reassure her. But really, they now had the answer they needed. Right before Steven Shoemaker's death, his daughter had said Bloody Mary, three times in the bathroom mirror.
And so their next move, was to see that mirror for themselves. Unfortunately they couldn't find anything else than some dried blood on the floor.
"I mean, everywhere else all over the country, kids will play Bloody Mary, and as far as we know, nobody dies from it." Sam was searching for an explanation.
"Yeah, well, maybe everywhere it's just a story, but here it's actually happening."
"The place where the legend began?"
"We've seen way more complicated than that." Alina shrugged and leaned against the wall. "I mean people think women in white are just a legend too."
"Good point." Dean admitted as he opened the medicine cabinet.
"But according to the legend, the person who says B…" Sam stopped himself as the medicine cabinet mirror was now facing him, and closed it. "The person who says you know what gets it. But here…"
"Shoemaker gets it instead, yeah." Dean finished. "Never heard anything like that before. Still, the guy did die right in front of the mirror, and the daughter's right. The way the legend goes, you know who scratches your eyes out."
Alina joined them in front of the mirror and tried to look for clues too. "Well, women in white are vengeful spirits, and they always follow the same pattern, unfaithful men. So…maybe Lily Shoemaker didn't have anything to hide, but her father did."
"You think he was unfaithful to his wife when she was still alive?" Dean questioned her.
"I don't know. But if there is a pattern, we need to find it before someone else decides to play this stupid game."
The three of them agreed to go do some researches. But they were still in the bathroom's doorway when they were stopped by one of Donna Shoemaker's friends. She was clearly suspicious of them because of their questions downstairs, and because Donna's dad used to work by himself. So she threatened to scream if they didn't tell her the truth, and Sam was the one to do it. After explaining to her that what happened to Mr Shoemaker wasn't a typical stroke and that they were here to prevent it from happening to anyone else, the girl slowly started to trust what they said. Sam even gave her his cell number so she could call him if something strange happened again, and then they were gone.
They made it to the local library, ready to find their vengeful spirit in local newspapers or public records. They had to find a Mary that had died in front of a mirror. And it shouldn't have been too hard...
"Well that sounds annoying." Dean complained.
"No it won't be so bad, as long as we..." Sam was interrupted by Alina, as the young woman cleared her throat and was now pointing at the computers, which all had a written paper 'Out of Order' on them. He chuckled in disbelief. "I take it back. This will be very annoying."
"That's putting it nicely…" Alina mumbled and headed to the Archives.
They found a motel to continue their researches for the night, but after hours of reading useless public records, Alina decided that she needed some air. She at least needed to get out of that room. So she grabbed the car keys in addition to some new documents, ignored the brothers' curious eyes and left. When she finally got in the passenger's seat of the Impala, she could already feel her mind getting back to its peaceful state. She loved that car. The smell, the seats, the design…everything was perfect. She smiled, and was about to get back to her researches when the driver's door opened and Dean appeared next to her. "What's up Frenchy?"
"I'm fine don't worry. I just feel more comfortable here."
"You do?" Dean could understand her statement better than anyone else, he was just surprised to hear it from another human being.
"Yeah! I mean…motel rooms are cool and all, but here I can seat comfortably to watch the stars, listen to some music without bothering Captain Serious Sam, and fall asleep knowing you guys won't be able to sneak out in the morning without me." She turned to smile at him, then handed him a pile of documents she had taken with her. "Wanna hang out with me Winchester?"
Dean rolled his eyes at the sight of more papers, and when he eventually grabbed them, he quickly threw them away on the backseat. "It's break time."
"Technically it's sleep time."
"Same thing." Dean mischievously grinned and played a Kansas cassette.
Alina smiled at the first notes of 'Dust in the Wind'. She put her own papers down and let herself get a little more comfortable in her seat, so she would also be able to look at the sky perfectly. She hadn't even realized how tired she was until this moment. She loved that car.
"Almost didn't come to check up on you." Dean informed her after a few seconds. "Thought you wanted…privacy or whatever."
Alina stayed silent for a long minute after hearing his words, then she let out a sudden laughter that grabbed Dean's attention back. "What's so funny?"
She shook her head, trying to stop herself from laughing. "It's just…it's so stupid. Do you remember that time when I got stuck in one of those portable toilets?"
"You were crying like a baby when I found you."
"Okay first of all I was 7, you jerk!"
She let out a deep sigh of frustration when she heard her friend laughing next to her, but decided to get back to her story. "And secondly, it wasn't an accident. There were these stupid girls at the park that day, and I guess—I'm still trying to find out how—they all fell in love with you. But since you were only spending time with Sam and I, they got jealous, and managed to lock me up in that thing. I remember they were laughing behind the door, saying that you'd never come and find me. So yes, Winchester, I cried because I thought they were right and I didn't wanna spend hours in there alone. But less than five minutes after that, the door opened and you were here. You were yelling at me, which is mostly the reason why I wasn't able to tell you the truth until now, but…you were here. And these girls were wrong. So after that day I knew you'd always find me and…I just felt safe."
Dean had listened to the young woman speak without being able to take his eyes off her for a moment. She seemed focused on the sky above them, but had never stopped smiling, even while talking about how it felt when she thought she was alone back in that tiny space. It didn't seem to be a bad memory for her, simply because he was a part of it. He couldn't imagine having this kind of ability, since Sam only seemed to have bad memories of his life before college, and his father…was his father.
Alina was certainly the only person on this planet to never lose faith in him, even if he gave her hundreds of reasons to do so. Her eyes finally met his, and her smile only grew wider at the sight of him. "Yeah so ever since that day, even if I sometimes would like some privacy or whatever, I'm always happy whenever you find me Winchester."
She kept staring at him joyfully, making him eventually smile too. The two shared a simple look, without a word, before Dean's inability to handle personal moments like this one for too long, made him say something he regretted to say the moment it came out of his mouth. "You know if it wasn't you, we'd totally be making out right now?"
He expected the young woman to react with the same exasperation as usual. But she actually chuckled and leaned over a little more. "Why? What's wrong with me?"
"Where to start…"
Alina pretended to be offended, while she was really amused by his comment. She hit him on the arm and leaned back against the passenger's door to face him.
"Well I wouldn't dare making out with you in the backseat of your car anyway. I'm already sure my mom will kill me when she finds out about my drunk ass kissing you."
Dean frowned, really surprised by this revelation. "Why's that?"
"Because she would never let me date a Winchester. Well…she would let me date Sam. She would even let me marry him. But…you're out of the competition."
"Hold on!" Dean straightened up from his position, clearly shocked. "Moms love me!"
"Yeah that's part of the problem. But it doesn't matter, you know how much my mom loves you. You're like a son to her, but you'll never be her ideal son in-law."
Dean had to admit that Alina's mom was right about him. He too wasn't a big fan of the 'in-law' part, and his actions perfectly illustrated it.
"Anyway!" Alina let out in amusement, then stood up a little to get access to the backseats and take the papers Dean had thrown there earlier. "Break's over. If we wanna catch this spirit, we've got to be 'bloody wary'."
She sat back, only to find Dean watching her, with a mix of despair and amusement on his face. She tried to be serious, biting her lips to keep her mouth shut, but eventually bursted out laughing at her own joke and the british accent she'd used to say the last two words. "Did you get it? Bloody Wary!"
"I got it."
"So why aren't you laughing?! It's funny!"
Dean kept staring at her, then smirked softly. Not because of the joke, but because he enjoyed seeing Alina laughing even if it was from exhaustion or boredom. She was beautiful when she smiled. Not the smile she used with everyone else whenever she needed to get informations, the real one. Dean could recognize it from the way her cheeks would get all puffy, and small dimples would appear on the out corners of her eyes. He couldn't help but wonder how the same woman could be so hot and cute at the same time. Hunters usually didn't show this side of their personality, even to their closest ones. But Alina just didn't care when she was with him.
After realizing that he'd been staring at her for quite a long time, he finally cleared his throat and stopped her laughing by slapping one of the documents on her face. "Come on Frenchy, you said it yourself. Break's over."
Alina mumbled some insults at him, then went back to her researches. It was going to be a very long night…
So I finished writing episode 6, and as I came back to this one to reread it and post it, I realized that maybe I love writing cute moments between Dean and Alina a little too much. As long as it doesn't bother you, I'll keep doing that, but maybe you wanna see more actions? Cute best friends moments with Sam? Does it bother you guys that I don't completely follow the script to add Alina to the story? I just wanna make sure that you like the story the way it is now, because if there are some improvements to make, I'll make sure to listen to your critics. This is not my fanfiction, it's ours!
So make sure to be here for part 2 of Bloody Mary, and have a nice day/night!
