(S1EP8 - Bugs)
"So...we've got a gas company employee who fell in a sinkhole, and died from human mad cow disease in less than an hour. And after Dean's not so subtle manipulation tactic to make you jump inside that hole so he wouldn't have to go himself, you're telling me the only interesting thing you found down there is a dead beetle?"
Sam ignored the rest of her statement when he turned to her in shock. "What manipulation tactic?"
"Oh please Sammy, I thought you were smarter than that..."
Alina noticed Dean's amused smirk as he was driving, until Sam looked back at him angrily. And at that moment, their friend knew she had to bring them back to the case if she wanted to avoid another sibling argument. "So what about the beetle?"
Sam clearly wanted to yell at his brother, but he replied anyway with his usual professionalism. "There were no tunnels, no tracks. No evidence of any other kind of creature down there. You know, some beetles do eat meat. Now, it's usually dead meat, but..."
"How many did you find down there?" Dean asked, now as curious as Alina about this new lead.
"Ten."
"It'd take a whole lot more than that to eat out some dude's brain."
"Well, maybe there were more."
"I don't know, it sounds like a stretch to me."
"Says the big bad hunter with a trunk filled with weapons." Alina pointed out, making him shake his head to hide another smile.
"Well, we need more information on the area, the neighborhood. Whether something like this has ever happened before." Sam explained, not realizing that the car was slowing down in front of the sign of an open house, decorated with red balloons. Of course, Alina hadn't been the only one to notice that sign.
"I know a good place to start." Dean announced proudly, driving next to another sign saying 'Models Open. New Buyers' BBQ Today!' "I'm kinda hungry for a little barbecue, how about you?" Alina laughed at the knowing look Sam was giving him. "What, we can't talk to the locals?"
"And the free food's got nothing to do with it?" His brother asked, already done with him.
"Of course not. I'm a professional."
"Yeah Sammy. Respect the professionals."
And the moment the car was parked, Alina and Dean jumped out of it, excited to go to that barbecue. The young woman couldn't wait to finally eat a homemade meal. She'd spent too much time on the road with the brothers and Dean's bad eating habits.
"Growing up in a place like this would freak me out." Dean admitted, checking his surrounding with some kind of disgust in his voice.
"Why?"
"Well, manicured lawns, 'How was your day, honey?' I'd blow my brain out."
Alina agreed with him on one point, this kind of neighborhood sometimes seemed far too perfect to be actually pleasant. Yet, it could also have a charm for someone who'd known worse than gossip and conflicts between neighbors in their life. Of course, the boys had only known the motel-to-motel life after their mother's death, but Alina had lived most of her life in a large house with her parents, surrounded by neighbors who all shared the same occupation as them. The hunt. So yes, she'd somehow known the life that terrified Dean so much, but it wasn't ordinary anyway. It was the perfect mix of calm and crazy, she often missed that life.
The brothers and their friend stopped in front of the house, knocked on the door, and were quickly welcomed by the homeowner. "Welcome." The man said happily.
"This the barbecue?" Dean asked, showing a little bit too much of his real intentions.
"Yeah, not the best weather, but... I'm Larry Pike, the developer here. And you are..."
"Dean. This is Sam and Alina."
They all shook hands, and Alina was already bored by the intensive fake smiling.
"Sam, Dean, Alina, good to meet you. So, you are interested in Oasis Plains?"
"Yes, sir."
"Let me just say, we accept homeowners of any race, religion, color, or...open relationships.
Alina realized what he was trying to say, way before the two others did, and couldn't hold her laugh. That's when Dean and Sam understood what Larry was implying about the three of them and instantly corrected him. "We're brothers." Dean hurriedly said.
"Our father is getting on in years, and we're just looking for a place for him."
Slightly embarrassed by his mistake, Larry still kept his joyfulness and nodded. "Great, great. Well, seniors are welcome, too. Come on in."
They entered the house, and Dean had to hit Alina's arm to stop her from laughing hysterically behind them. They arrived in the backyard where lots of people were already walking around, chatting and eating. And of course, they had to listen to the whole developer speech from Larry as they were following him.
"Eighteen months ago, I was walking this valley with my survey team. There was nothing here but scrub brush and squirrels. And you know what, we built such a nice place to live that I actually bought into it myself. This is our house. We're the first family in Oasis Plains. This is my wife, Joanie."
He introduced them to his smiling wife, putting his arm around her, acting like the perfect suburban couple. Once again, they all shook hands and shared smiles.
"Tell them how much you love the place, honey. And lie if you have to because I need to sell some houses."
"Right." The couple laughed and Larry eventually left the hunters with his charming wife. "Don't let his salesman routine scare you. This really is a great place to live."
And another attacker arrived, disguised as a very energetic woman with her black hair pulled back in a tight bun, and some terrifying social skills. "Hi, I'm Lynda Bloome, head of sales."
"And Lynda was second to move in." Joanie informed them. "She's a very noisy neighbor, though." And just like that, the perfect wife was gone too.
Alina almost felt like she couldn't take a moment to breath with these people.
"She's kidding, of course. I take it you are interested in becoming homeowners."
"Well..."
"Yeah, well..."
Even the boys couldn't say a word without the fear of getting interrupted by another intervention.
"Well, let me just say that we accept homeowners of any race, religion, color, or...open relationships."
This time, Dean put his arm around Alina to prevent her from laughing again, which she clearly was about to do. "Right. Um...we're gonna go talk to Larry." He turned to Sam. "Okay, honey?"
Knowing her friend perfectly, Alina had the same reflex as him and they both smacked Sam on his ass at the same time before turning around to leave, holding back their laughs while picturing Sam's embarrassed look and awkward silence behind them.
They went back inside the house, and finally Alina felt like she could breath again. "I love our job so much." She couldn't see herself doing that whole salesman thing.
"Yeah tell me about it."
Searching for Larry, they took the opportunity to check the house. Alina stopped in front of a wall covered in pictures of the married couple, and a teenage boy who had to be their son. It brought back so many happy memories with her own parents to Alina, that she started to feel sad about them. She missed them so much.
"You know, I've always envied you and Sam."
Dean was actually surprise to hear that. Growing up, she always had everything they couldn't get with their dad being too busy hunting. "Why?"
"You had each other. I mean...I'll never be grateful enough to my parents for raising me like they did. But you can't imagine how easy it is to feel alone when you grow up in a house like this one. I think that's why I've spent so much time in America during my childhood. My parents knew that I could never feel alone when they weren't around, as long as I was with you guys." She smiled softly at the many memories she had with them and turned to Dean. "I guess some things never change, right?"
Dean watched his friend as she continued to walk around the house. She seemed lost in her thoughts, admiring the place with nostalgia. She was leaning over the back of the couch when he finally decided to join her. "So...you ever see yourself living in a neighborhood like this one?"
He almost immediately regretted asking this question when he saw Alina's reaction. She seemed devastated by her own answer, and unfortunately, she didn't have the opportunity to give it to him since Larry entered the living room at the same time. Interrupting their conversation, and forcing them to put on their fakest smiles again. He offered them to take a tour of the house, so they followed him again.
"You've got three choices, carpet, hardwood, and tile." He told them as they were finishing the tour a few minutes later, going down the stairs.
"Whoa." Dean suddenly stopped him when he noticed a jar full of bugs on a nearby table. "Someone likes bugs."
Alina pretended to be surprised too by this discovery, waiting for Larry's reply. That had to be a new lead.
"My son, he's into insects. He's very...inquisitive."
The hunters shared the same suspicious look and went back outside with the man, who instantly yelled a boy's name and walked straight to the one standing next to Sam. Alina recognized him from the pictures on the wall. They watched Larry as he grabbed his son by the arm and pulled him away from the crowd.
"That's one happy family." Alina sarcastically said once they met again with Sam.
"Remind you of somebody?" Sam automatically asked his brother, who looked over at the father yelling at his son, before giving Sam a confused look. "Dad?"
Alina had to fight the urge to roll her eyes and whisper 'Here we go again...'
"Dad never treated us like that."
"Well, dad never treated you like that. You were perfect. He was all over my case. You don't remember?"
"Well, maybe he had to raise his voice, but sometimes, you were out of line."
"Right. Right, like when I said I'd rather play soccer than learn bowhunting."
"Bowhunting's an important skill."
And as usual, they both turned to Alina to get her opinion on the matter. But she wasn't in the mood for the Winchesters and their daddy issues. She never was. So she simply shrugged. "I was excluded for several days from my school for shooting an arrow into the soccer team's ball during a game. But I don't know, I think I actually saved our honor. That team sucked."
She got a proud smile from Dean, and a slightly amused smirk from Sam who finally decided to change the subject. "Whatever. How was your tour?"
"Oh, it was excellent. We're ready to buy." Alina nodded at Dean's joke, finally getting a laugh from her best friend. "So you might be onto something. Looks like Dustin Burwash wasn't the first strange death around here."
"What happened?"
"About a year ago, before they broke ground, one of Larry's surveyors dropped dead while on the job. Get this severe allergic reaction to bee stings."
"More bugs."
"I already hate this job..." Alina sighed.
LATER
It was dark outside but the hunters were still driving through the neighborhood. They were trying to find out what they could be hunting in this new town, and since there weren't any signs of ghost activity the most logical theory was that the bugs were actually controlled by something. Or someone. And their only suspect right now was Larry's son, after he'd tried to scare the realtor with a tarantula. That would be their lead for the next day, but for now, Alina and Sam were surprised when Dean made his brother pull into the empty driveway of one of the Oasis Plains homes. They were less surprised and more exasperated by him when they realized they were about to squat in an empty house, so Dean could try the steam shower. Alina was too tired to argue, and had to admit anyway that she'd rather stay here than go to another stinky motel.
LATER
Dean was getting out of the shower with his hair still wet and a towel around his neck, when he heard music coming from downstairs. It was a music Alina had listened to a lot during the year of its release, but that he hadn't heard ever since then. Dean, curious, couldn't help but follow the sound to finally find his friend in the kitchen, too busy stirring something in a bubbling pot to notice his arrival from behind. He stopped in the doorway with a little smirk, and watched the girl sway on the melody while singing the lyrics of the Sixpence None the Richer's song.
"Oooh, kiss me, beneath the milky twilight. Lead me, out on the moonlit floor. Lift your open hand, strike up the band and make the fireflies dance silver moon's sparkling...So kiss... Dean!" Alina was startled when she finally turned around, finding her friend staring at her in the doorway and trying not to make fun of her. "What the hell are you doing?!"
"I could ask you the same thing." He said and walked inside the room to investigate what she was cooking. "What's that?" He didn't even wait for an answer as he was about to take the spoon next to him to taste the sauce in the pot.
"Don't even think about it!" Alina scolded him and smacked his hand away from her work of art. "If you wanna stay, you better not touch anything."
"Okay!" He raised both his hands, walking backwards until he stopped and sat on a high chair on the other side of the kitchen counter.
Alina smiled and shook her head, quickly checking the sauce so it wouldn't burn because of him. "If you really wanna know, I'm making lasagnas."
"Where'd you get the ingredients?"
"Sam went to the grocery store while you were taking your one hour shower. "
Dean laughed at the way she was now proudly assembling the different layers. Although he'd always hated this kind of scenes from the ordinary kind of life, he had to admit that this moment didn't completely displease him. Not only because he would be able to eat a homemade dish, prepared especially for him after years of eating in fast foods and motels. More than anything, he enjoyed spending time with Alina. And this was the opportunity he was waiting for to ask her the same question he'd tried to ask before they were interrupted by Larry's home tour. "So Frenchy, you never answered my question. What do you think of this place?"
Once again, Alina looked down and tried to hide her sadness behind a smile that couldn't convince Dean that she was okay. She didn't like thinking about this ordinary life, because she didn't feel like she could handle it. "Well yeah...at first, sure I thought I wanted to have that kind of house with the perfect husband, the two adorable kids, and the big fluffy dog. Of course I wanted to marry a hunter so I would be able to teach our girls how to use guns, bows and knives every time they'd get back from school. It just felt natural, you know? But...when my dad died, my mom lost the love of her life and I realized that when you marry a hunter you can't expect a different ending. Sometimes I just feel stupid thinking about this so much, because maybe this is all part of the process. Maybe the love is worth the pain. I guess hunters must be masochists, right?"
When she finally raised her head, she realized that Dean wasn't on his chair anymore, but was now standing in front of her once again. She looked up in his eyes, trying to understand what they were trying to tell her, but Dean Winchester's beautiful green eyes were a complete mystery at the moment. She did her best to stay calm but the proximity reminded her of their latest job. They'd kissed, yes, but...she also thought everyday about that night at the cemetery. She was convinced something was about to happen before that noise had forced them to step away from each other. She didn't know how she felt, but maybe she wanted Dean to feel something specific. And right now, from the way he was looking at her, it almost felt like he did. But it was impossible. It was Dean.
"Alina..." Dean hated to see her like that. He understood the way she felt about hunters falling in love, because his dad too was never the same after losing his wife. He loved her, and out of nowhere he ended up alone with two kids to raise. And yes, the pain was real. Dean knew that because when he thought he'd lost Alina back in that basement with the Hook Man, the one thing he couldn't stop thinking about was not being able to spend more time with her. He wanted more of her. But...
"Hey Alina?"
Just like that time in St. Louis, Sam chose the worst time to join them. When Alina turned toward his brother's voice, Dean tried to hide his frustration by gently knocking his fist on the kitchen counter. "What?!" He asked more aggressively than he intended to. Fortunately Alina didn't notice his tone and simply waited for Sam to answer.
The youngest Winchester entered the room with a ringing phone in his hand. It was Alina's. "Someone's been trying to call you." The young woman frowned and took her phone, giving Sam a thankful look before answering the call.
Dean sighed in frustration, grabbed his brother's hoodie to take him out of the kitchen with him, and stopped in the middle of the living room where he knew Alina wouldn't be able to hear them. "Dude what the hell?!"
"What?" Sam had no idea why his brother was so mad over a simple phone call.
"Really?! You even know how to knock?!"
"How to..."
"Knock! How to knock! You know sometimes, people before they enter a room, they knock on the freaking door!"
Sam kept staring at him in utter confusion, until he connected the dots in his mind and a big smile appeared on his face. "Wait, did I interrupt something?"
Dean wanted to keep yelling at him, but honestly, he wasn't even sure he was about to tell Alina what he wanted to tell her. No it wasn't Sam's fault, he just couldn't handle these freaking intimate moments. "Never mind..."
"Oh my God!" They both jumped at the girl's scream, turning to her as she was excitedly walking out of the kitchen with a big smile on her face. "Guys…I think I found my mom."
Clearly, the Winchesters weren't expecting that kind of news because they couldn't share her enthusiasm. "What…how?" Sam asked her, since Dean was just staring at her in astonishment.
"I just got a call from an old friend of mine. Elias, he…his father owns this old shop in Kansas City where my parents used to go whenever they needed to buy specific kinds of weapons for their hunts. When I first arrived in America five months ago, I sent him a text to tell him I was looking for my mom. He never replied so I didn't think he'd got it, but he just called me. Apparently he saw her walking out of the shop a few hours ago and he wasn't sure it was really her, until his dad confirmed it. She's in Kansas City, guys!"
The brothers couldn't believe what she was saying. They'd spent so much time searching for their parents, that they didn't even know what to do with this new lead. And still, Sam was the only one able to talk to his friend. "Well at least we know she's fine, right? What about our dad? Did your friend say anything about him?"
Alina's excitement quickly changed into guilt. "No I'm sorry Sam. Elias said my mom was alone when she came." She wished she had some answers for the boys too, but even if she didn't have any, she still had to hurry with the ones she actually had. "Sam this is huge. I mean…if my mom is just a few miles away from here, I need to go find her while I still can."
"Wow hold on." The fear brought back Dean's ability to talk. "You mean, 'we' need to go. You're not planning on going there alone, right?"
"Well you can't come with me. Whatever's happening to this town, we can't just all leave and let innocent people die."
Dean scoffed, not liking what his friend was implying. "There's no way in hell I'm letting you go to Kansas City on your own Alina. For all we know, this…Elias guy could be lying to you."
"Okay now you're being ridiculous. I trust Elias, he wouldn't lie to me about that. Plus, this isn't me asking for your permission to go, this is me politely telling you that I'm going, instead of taking off in the middle of the night without any warning." And she didn't even give him another look as she was already heading towards the garage where the car was parked.
Of course the boys followed her, Dean more frustrated and insistent than his brother. "Okay, this is not happening." The moment Alina opened the trunk of the Impala, he came right behind her to close it back. "You're not going there alone."
"Dean I swear every time we argue it feels like I'm talking to a freaking broken record. Get out of my way." She tried opening the trunk once again but he grabbed her hand and pulled it away from the car, also forcing her to face him. However, he didn't expect her to carefully twist his wrist to avoid hurting him too bad, and make him spin on himself to push him away from her and the car in less than three seconds. "I'm sorry Dean but I did ask you to get out of my way." She opened the trunk, finally able to grab her bag and throw it on her shoulder.
Dean wanted to stop her again, but Sam put his arm in front of his brother to prevent him from making another mistake. He agreed with him about the fact that Alina going on her own wasn't a good idea, but he also knew how to handle things calmly, unlike him.
"Alina I know you're worried about your mom, but you can't just leave like that without a proper plan."
"I have a plan. It's called, 'finding my mom before she disappears again so I won't have to run after her for another five months'."
"And how do you plan on going to Kansas City?"
"I'll just steal a bike. Wouldn't be the first time."
"Alina…"
"Sam." She had enough of the brothers trying to stop her. This was something she had to do, and she could understand their fear but she didn't have time to listen to them. "This is my mom. This is the reason why I came here in the first place. I promise I'll come back, but right now I have to do this."
Of course Sam knew how she felt. For months, he'd been arguing with the other two about the fact that they had to focus on finding John more. If he'd been in her place, he would have reacted in the same way to finally have answers to his questions. So after a short moment of hesitation, he just nodded, offering her a defeated smile that pushed the young woman to take him in her arms and reassure him. She hated to see him like that because of her. She didn't want to worry him. "We'll see each other soon. Okay?"
"Yeah…"
She took a step away, still smiling at him, then noticed Dean looking at them from a short distance. She couldn't leave knowing he would be mad at her. She couldn't do that to him. Fortunately, Sam noticed the concern in her eyes and decided to go back inside the house to give the two friends some privacy. They both needed this.
It did however take Alina a few more seconds to find something to say once she ended up alone with Dean. She forced a little laugh out of her mouth. "So the lasagnas are in the oven. It'd be great if you guys didn't let them burn." But she got nothing in return. Which didn't stop her from trying again. "I'm sorry for your wrist. You know it's…that damn self defense mechanism…" Clearly, the jokes just wouldn't work with him. He was too angry to answer, but too worried to let her go just like that. That was heartbreaking for her because she remembered his worse fear and felt bad for making him experience it so suddenly. That wasn't the point.
"Dean…you know I'm not leaving you, right? As soon as I get the answers I need, I'll come right back to you and Sam."
"Yeah but…I'll get it if you don't."
"Hey no…" Alina took a step closer to him the moment she heard him say those absurd words. "I am coming back, I promise. So don't give up on me Winchester, okay?"
That was the best moment to do it. He needed to let it all out in case he'd never see her again. And yet, he wanted to believe her when she said she'd be back. She had to be sincere, or else he would probably never be able to trust anyone else ever again.
He just had to wait and see, even if patience wasn't his strongest ability. "Okay." He finally said with a faint smile. "Be careful Frenchy, don't make me come all the way to Kansas City to save your ass."
She smiled again. And this time it was a real smile. "I'll handle my ass, you handle the bugs."
And they hugged. It was a tight embrace, almost suffocating as none of them wanted to put an end to it. Deep down inside her, Alina was terrified of letting go of him, his smell, his arms…but she couldn't show it to him. She just had to close her eyes as she pulled away from him, kissed him on the cheek one last time, and walked out of the garage. Dean already regretted letting her go when he saw the garage door closing behind her, but there was nothing he could do to stop her anymore. He just wished he could go with her, because he knew he wouldn't be able to spend one day not worrying about the girl he cared so much for.
THE NEXT DAY
It didn't take Alina too long to reach Kansas City once she'd 'found' a motorbike. It wasn't too difficult either to find Elias' dad's shop. She remembered the place clearly, even if she was just 12 the last time she'd come with her parents. That was actually the shop where her father had bought the silver dagger he had then engraved for her. So she wasn't surprised once she entered the shop, to be welcomed so warmly by the old family friend. "Alina? Is that you?" Daniel was a short man, always wearing the same brown tie and leather shoes, with an incurable obsession for hunting weapons that eventually became his daily job when his wife died. And he hadn't changed since the last time Alina saw him.
"Hey Daniel." She hugged him back, glad to see his familiar face after such a long time.
"Well that's a surprise. Oh but you look exactly like your father."
"Thanks." She felt kind of uncomfortable every time people would say that. Her dad was still a sensitive subject. "But to be honest, I'm more interested in finding my mom right now. Heard she came by recently."
"Your mom?"
Alina could see in his eyes that he was trying to find a good lie, but she didn't have time for this. She needed to hurry and get back to the boys. "Come on Daniel. Like you said I am just like my dad, which means I'll see right through every one of your lies until you eventually decide that both our times are too precious to be wasted like that. So, did you see my mom, yes or no?"
A faint smile appeared on the man lips as he could hear his old friend talking with every words that came out of his daughter's mouth. "Your dad would be proud of you. Your mom…that's another story." He then turned around to go back behind his desk. "I guess you must be here because my son decided to ignore everything I taught him about customers' privacy again. That's not a surprise, he was never good at keeping secrets."
"Daniel please…I just spent five months looking everywhere for my mom. I need to know where she is."
"Honey I'm sorry. It's true, your mom came here yesterday but I don't know where she went after that. I'm afraid I can't help you."
Simply knowing that her mom really was here the day before, was already a huge relief for the young woman who was still afraid of the answer. She would've hated herself for leaving Dean and Sam in the middle of a case just to follow a false lead. But it was true, her mom was there.
"Did she look…fine?" She was angry at her mom for not giving her any news, but she was also still concerned about her well-being.
"I guess so. You know your mom, she's always been the mysterious kind."
"Yeah I know but…if she is fine, why didn't she reach out to me? After my dad died, it was just us so why…" Tears started rolling down her cheeks as she talked about her mom, and the man in front of her couldn't help but feel bad for her. He knew what losing a parent could do to a child, especially when it happened in such a brutal way. Disappearing just like that, without giving any news to his son, that sounded like a terrible thing he would never do.
"Okay honey, maybe I can help you." Anything to see her smile again. "Your mom was looking for a specific type of weapon that I don't have here, but I told her that I'd ask around to help her. I still have the number she gave me in case I could find what she was looking for, if you want it…" He searched around his desk for a few seconds, before finally picking up a piece of paper under a book and giving it to the girl. "You should try and call her."
He succeeded to get a smile from her. Her face lit up at the sight of the paper and she wrapped both her hands around his before taking the phone number. "Thank you Daniel. Thank you."
"Alright, I still got a lot of work to do in the back, you're gonna be okay?"
Since she nodded instantly, he left her to go in the back shop and Alina was finally able to drop the smile and wipe away her fake tears, annoyed by this little act. She hated having to cry to get what she wanted, even if it always worked that was like a stain on her dignity. But she ignored that, holding the precious phone number between her fingers for a moment, trying to decide if she should call it or not. She'd come all the way here for that, but what if her mom didn't pick up again?
Well…only one way to find out. She checked her surroundings one last time to make sure Daniel wasn't coming back, grabbed the phone on his desk and called the number on the piece of paper. She couldn't take the risk of using her own phone if she wanted her mom to answer the call.
And unfortunately, it worked. "Hello?"
That was her mom's voice. The voice she hadn't heard in such a long time, she'd almost convinced herself that she'd never hear it again. She thought her mom was hurt, even dead, but she sounded fine. She sounded more than capable of picking up her daughter's calls after all. "Hello? Who's that?" She asked again, losing her patience with the silent person calling her.
"C'est moi…" (It's me…)
"A…Alina?" All the anger in her voice suddenly disappeared when she said her daughter's name in complete confusion. She obviously didn't expect that call.
"Salut maman." (Hi mom.)
"Alina comment…comment tu as eu ce numéro?" (Alina how…how did you get that number?)
Her daughter scoffed at the ridiculous question. "Sérieusement? C'est tout ce que tu trouves à dire? Ça fait cinq mois que je te cherche partout!" (Seriously? That's all you have to say? I've been looking for you everywhere for five months!)
"Alina…"
"C'est quoi ces conneries maman?! Pourquoi tu te caches?! Qu'est-ce qu'il se passe avec John?!" (What the hell, mom?! Why are you hiding?! What's going on with John?!)
"John? Ça fait deux mois que je ne l'ai pas vu." (John? I haven't seen him in two months.)
"Quoi? Attends je croyais que t'étais venue ici pour l'aider, si t'étais pas avec lui qu'est-ce que tu faisais? Pourquoi tu n'es pas venue me retrouver?" (What? Wait I thought you came here to help him, if you weren't with him, what were you doing? Why didn't you come and find me?)
"Parce que je savais que tu chercherais à m'aider." (Because I knew you'd wanna help me.)
"T'aider à faire quoi? Bon sang, me dis pas que tu chasses seule." (Help you do what? Damn it, don't tell you're hunting alone.)
"Alina écoute moi. Je vais raccrocher, tu vas retourner avec les garçons, et tu vas arrêter de me chercher. Je ne sais pas comment tu as eu ce numéro mais…" (Alina listen to me. I'm gonna hung up, you're gonna go back with the boys, and you're gonna stop looking for me. I don't know how you got this number but…)
"Tu veux que je…tu savais que j'étais avec les Winchester? Depuis quand?" (You want me to…you knew I was with the Winchesters? Since when?)
The hesitation was already enough of an answer, but when her mom decided to reveal the truth, it felt even worse. "Depuis le début. Je n'ai jamais cessé de veiller sur toi et les garçons." (Since the beginning. I've never stopped looking after you and the boys.)
Alina was shocked. She thought her mom didn't know anything that was happening to her and the brothers, but it was all a lie. The whole time she'd been searching for her, her mom had actually kept an eye on her. That wasn't as reassuring as it should've been for the girl who felt more and more betrayed.
"Alors tu sais que j'ai dû combattre un démon…" (So you know I had to fight against a demon…)
"Oui je sais… Je suis désolée de ne pas avoir pu t'aider mais…je savais que tu n'étais pas seule. Je fais confiance à Dean et à Sam pour s'occuper de toi." (Yes I know… I'm sorry I couldn't help you but…I knew you weren't alone. I trust Dean and Sam to take care of you.)
"J'avais besoin de toi." (I needed you.)
"Chérie…" (Honey…)
"Je sais pas pourquoi ça m'arrive maman…je deviens folle." (I don't know why this is happening to me mom…I'm going insane.)
This time, her tears were real. She was being completely sincere with her mom about her mental state, and it felt horrible. She wished her mom was here, and not just a voice in her ear.
"Alina? De quoi tu parles? Est-ce que tout va bien?" (Alina? What are you talking about? Is everything okay?)
She didn't even know if she wanted to tell her mom anymore. She didn't deserve to know, but Alina needed answers. "J'en sais rien. Mais il y a quelque chose qui cloche avec les esprits. Il y a quelque chose qui cloche avec moi…" (I don't know…but there's something wrong with the spirits. There's something wrong with me…)
Once again, she could only hear her mom's breathing getting uncontrollably faster. As if she was panicking. As if she knew something.
And it felt like another stab in the back.
"Tu sais ce qu'il m'arrive." (You know what's happening to me.)
Alina's voice was suddenly calmer, darker. She wanted her mom to comfort her, to tell her that everything was going to be just fine, but that didn't happen. In fact, she realized that her mom had answers and was choosing to hide them when she could hear in her own daughter's voice how not knowing was painful for her. Why?
"Maman parle-moi s'il te plait. Dis-moi ce qu'il se passe…" (Mom talk to me please. Tell me what's going on…)
Her trembling voice made her mom want to cry. She didn't want her daughter to be so afraid of herself. She didn't think this would happen so soon. "Je suis désolée Alina…" (I'm sorry Alina…)
"Maman attends…" (Mom wait…)
But the call ended suddenly. Actually, everything went completely silent around the girl who couldn't even hear the sounds coming from the street anymore. She couldn't see the sun on the other side of the windows…she couldn't see the windows. Everything was dark around her. She tried calling for Daniel, but there was no sound coming out of her mouth either. She felt paralyzed. She felt helpless.
"Please don't…"
What was that? Her voice? No not her actual voice, a younger version of it. She sounded in so much pain.
"I'm sorry Alina…" That was her dad's voice… Why did it sound so full of fear and regrets. When had he said those words? Why couldn't she remember? "You're just a kid, all this pain is not yours to take just yet. I can only hope that someday you'll be able to embrace it, but right now, I need you to just be my ordinary sweet little hunter. Okay baby?"
"Dad…"
"Dad!"
Okay this chapter is different because I was only inspired for the beginning of episode 8, so I decided to go in a completely different direction. I know you guys are probably hating me right now for the way Alina left Dean, but THEY'LL BE REUNITED IN THE NEXT CHAPTER! That's not a spoil, that's me making sure you'll come back to read it and see what happens!
So make sure to follow the story, leave a review, and I'll see you at the next part!
Have a nice day/night!
