#13
AU stories for NCIS episodes. Each is independent from all the others since this is based on the possibility of parallel universes and multiple timelines…. many, many of them. Later on some may seem to follow something that happened in an earlier AU episode story but it's probably coincidence unless I say otherwise in the beginning. Again, these are AU scenes/stories which means a character may die in one story and be alive in the next one.
This is #13 - a short alternate universe story/scene for season 1, episode 13 One Shot, One kill
The original episode aired on February 10, 2004.
The dialogue in some of this is from the episode.

"Forget the kid, Tony! The sniper is the water delivery guy," Kate almost yelled.
"I repeat! The sniper… (gasp)"
Kate stared at the window and then at Gibbs. Without that special glass her boss would be dead. Gibbs gazed out the window, his brain calculating where the shot might have come from.
Abby's voice came through clearly. "The mikes picked up the shot. I'm triangulating now."
A few seconds seemed a lot longer as they waited for Abby to work her magic.
"Got him. He's at the merchant building. Corner of 6th and K. Tenth floor."
Tony was already heading there when she said, "The building has an alley in the back. It's the most likely exit from where he's positioned."
Tony saw the gunman in the alley and the gunman saw him. Before Tony could get out of his car and confront him, he ran back into the building while the FBI agents yelled, "Drop your weapon."
Tony exited the car and headed for the door to go after the gunman but the FBI agents yelled for him to stop. "Wait, Agent DiNozzo. We need to assess the situation."
Abby's voice was heard again. "What happened? Did you get him?"
"Not yet, Abby. Not yet," he stated. To the FBI agents he growled, "We need to secure the building and set up a perimeter."
A shot reverberated and Tony moved fast. Gibbs came around the corner in the alley just as the shot rang out and he saw Tony take cover behind the car. One of the FBI agents was on the ground with his arm bleeding while the other had also taken cover. Gibbs moved to the side of a dumpster and grabbed Kate as she whirled around the corner, pulling her out of the line of fire.
"Are you okay, Tony?" Gibbs thought he looked fine but wanted to make sure.
"Yeah boss. I think he's on the second floor. He hasn't had enough time to go any higher."
Gibbs peeked around the dumpster, checking out the building. Kate was next to him.
They couldn't see anything. Not the gunman. Not his gun but there was a broken window. The injured FBI agent had gotten up and taken cover with his partner who was on his cell phone.
Gibbs addressed Abby. "How many doors to the outside in this building, Abby?"
Before she replied one of the FBI agents yelled, "Back up is coming along with a sniper and a negotiator." Then another shot rang out. None of the agents had been targeted.
"We're not waiting for that, are we boss?"
"No, we're not. Abby, the exits?"
"Four. One on each side and there's a loading dock."
"Where's the loading dock?"
"All the way on the opposite side from you."
"Okay, Tony, Kate, we can get to three doors and these guys can have this one."
Kate nodded and Tony said, "I like it."
"Okay, let's move. Be careful. We just need to find out where he's located and who he's shooting at now. Go."
Kate and Tony raced right and Gibbs went left. As he passed the FBI agents Gibbs saw that the man's wound was wrapped and appeared to have stopped bleeding.
"I thought you had a second team close by," Gibbs told them.
"We did. We do. We're not sure where they are right now."
Gibbs acknowledged that statement with a head tilt. "LEO's notified?"
"Yeah. The whole kitchen sink should be here in about 5."
"Okay, hold down the fort. I'll be back in a minute." And off he went before the FBI guys could say anything else.
"Tony, Kate, where are you?"
"I've got the door on the east side in sight. Give me a minute."
"I'm here and I have good cover, Gibbs. Tony, there's a homeless man going around the side toward you."
"Okay, thanks Kate. I'll check him out. Maybe our shooter is trying to get away."
Gibbs found cover for his door. The sirens were loud and non stop now. The kitchen sink was almost there. "Anyone see any casualties? What was that last shot about?"
"I'm in position, boss. The homeless guy isn't the sniper but I have him cuffed and out of the way, just in case."
"There's nobody here, Gibbs."
Gibbs considered everything and said, "I'm thinking maybe he shot himself."
In the end he had killed himself. In an office on the third floor. He left a note, a lengthy confession and a kind of manifesto. The FBI took credit for everything, after all they did have a wounded agent to parade before the cameras, and that was it.
