Author's notes - ChibiDawn, yes, I like seeing the Rangers doing some more more conventional rescue work, every now and then. It's a nice change of pace (from their typical antagonists of monsters and aliens and so forth) and it's always good to see characters in a different context. Plus, the imagery of being overwhelmed and flooded is a theme of part two.
Part Two
Chapter Two
A few days later, Jason, Scott and I climbed out of Jason's car and crossed the empty Youth Centre carpark. It was barely six in the morning, and everything felt cool and fresh. Dark shadows were still draped over the building and gardens. Scott let out a gulping yawn and cast a mournful gaze towards the horizon. The sun was barely visible.
"Why are we awake this early?" he murmured. "The sun's not even up yet."
"Don't look at us," Jason said. "You're the one who volunteered us for one of Sarah's training sessions."
"Sarah spent all afternoon in the gym," Scott replied. "The afternoon before that as well. She gets intense about stuff."
"I'll agree with that," I added. "I grew up with her."
We turned the corner to see Trini, Kimberly and Sarah waiting by the doors.
"Morning boys," Kim said as we approached. "But, like, for future reference? How did you get Scott here this early?"
"I want to say dynamite was involved," I said. Scott swatted me on the shoulder.
"So we're all here," Trini began. "What's the plan?"
"I was thinking three laps of the suburb," Sarah began, then tapped her communicator. "And we'll be on a time limit."
"Damn," I said, and stretched out my arms. "You trying to kill us?"
"Better me trying to kill you than this week's random supervillain," Sarah replied. "Besides. When I try to kill you, I do it out of love."
"And hey," Kim added brightly, "you never know when Zordon and Alpha might need us to…"
The Pink Ranger hadn't even finished the sentence before our communicators beeped that familiar six-note chime.
"Every time," Sarah murmured. "I don't know how he does it."
We glanced around the carpark but it was deserted thanks to the early hour. Jason raised his wrist and spoke.
"We're here Zordon," he said.
"I'm glad to catch you so early," Zordon's voice crackled through. "We have a situation developing in the English countryside. If you could teleport to the Command Centre?" and the communicator fell silent.
"It's a pity Ian slept in," Scott said. "He loves these overseas missions."
"We should go," Jason said, and turned to Sarah. "Raincheck on trying to kill us? Apparently something else wants to."
"Only until tomorrow," Sarah replied. And we tapped our communicators and vanished from the scene.
To be continued.
