I still do not own Harry Potter.

Padfoot sat between the bushes, staring at the well-lit house before him, barely noticing the rain soaking his fur. He had never been here before; it wasn't Mr. and Mrs. Potter's old home, nor was it the house in Godric's Hollow. Despite the distance of sitting across the yard, the figures visible through the windows were unmistakable to his dog eyes.

James threw his head back, laughing as he passed one window. Lily followed, looking like she was scolding him for something.

They were alive. Happy and with their son.

He hadn't known. No one had told him. After escaping Azkaban, he had wanted to see Harry for the first time in twelve years-just briefly on his way to Hogwarts-only to learn James and Lily had miraculously recovered almost two years previously.

It didn't seem possible. But there they were.

Padfoot whined deep in his throat. He ached to go in there, to prove to himself that James really was alive.

But no. James must believe he was guilty of something, or he would have visited.

Still, James would hear him out. Maybe. Possibly.

But there was no proof. Just his word. He would have to find the rat first and kill him.

Padfoot growled at the thought of the traitor. Whether James believed him or not, he would not let him kill the rat, and with the traitor at Hogwarts with Harry…

This was his fault, his mess, his stupid plan. It was about time he went about fixing it.

Yes, the rat had to die. Thirteen years too late, but no matter. That would be proof.

A figure came to the window, looking so much like James it was like a glimpse into the past. A flash of lighting lit up the yard, and Harry froze in the act of closing the curtains.

Padfoot dropped to his belly and crept away, shoving his massive bulk into the bushes where he would not be seen again. It was time he was gone. He had to get to Hogwarts before the students arrived and security was raised.

Author's note: So, Harry saw Sirius before school as usual, but I don't think he mentioned it to his parents. After all, it's just a dog, right?

I tried to keep the thoughts simplistic; Sirius says emotions are less complicated and human when he's in his animal form, and I assumed thoughts were a little like that too.

Does anyone have any ideas on how Sirius might have found Harry in the book? Sure, he might have figured out or assumed Harry went to the Dursley's, but being able to find them still assumes that A. he knew where they lived already, which seems unlikely considering what a poor relationship Lily had with her sister, and B. they never moved in the past fifteen-ish years. Did Sirius eavesdrop on people? Did he track him with his dog senses? How did he find him?
