Chapter Two: Chakra
"Understood."
What? Kakashi could feel it just like that?
Was she more incompetent than a three-year-old? Well, she was technically three too, but she had an additional 33 years to draw on. Chakra was something different in this world, but surely it couldn't be that difficult if it was commonly taught to children.
Yuina glanced between Kakashi and Sakumo unsure how to say she was unable to feel her chakra system. Might as well rip the bandage off. "I don't know what I'm supposed to be feeling."
Sakumo approached and knelt down on one knee to be closer to her height, even if he was still taller by doing so. He patted my head as if telling her it was okay before placing his hand over her collarbone and – oh. She could feel it. It channels throughout her body and exudes every part of her being. Now she felt dumb. How had she not noticed?
"You can fixate some chakra to the bottom of your feet to walk up the tree. You'll also want to circulate a little through your body to prevent the gravitational pull," explained Sakumo as Kakashi and Yuina faced the wide tree.
If everything had chakra, was she supposed to connect her chakra with the tree's chakra or was it more similar to thermal radiation that human bodies emit but are simply invisible to the human eye. Did that even apply to this world? Either way, it was the best comparison she had. Yuina looked at the tree then down at her feet. She also had to emit enough so that it would pass through her sandals.
Kakashi nodded prepared for the exercise. He wanted to soak up everything his dad could teach. His sister didn't seem to be grasping the concepts as fast though. "I'll go first." The tree was large enough for them both to go at once, but if Yuina needed a little extra time to observe, he would give her that. He slowly walked towards the tree. He could see his sister watching him from the corner of his eye as he raised a leg and stuck a foot against the trunk then lifted the other leg and walked up until he stood on an upper branch.
Kakashi then jumped back down to the grown where Sakumo praised him and it made his heart swell.
Yuina walked towards tree. She thought about running towards it hoping it will help, but if she fell that way it would be a spectacular far. She lifted a foot. She just needed to feel it connect.
She hears a crack and looked at where the bark split near her foot. That meant too much force, right? So, if she lessened it a little... She internally sighed before just going for it. This wasn't too bad—
Her foot slip downward, but she caught herself. Full attention. Full attention needed.
Yuina felt relieved when she made it to the branch without once falling.
Kakashi prevented himself from wincing when his sister slipped. She did manage though. He was sure she just needed a few more minutes to catch up. He was 48 minutes older, so it only made sense that she needed a few more minutes to catch up to speed.
Yuina walked back down the tree not quite trusting herself to just jump. She regretted her life decisions because walking downward felt weird. Really weird. At least walking upwards meant the chance of falling on your back. Falling when walking down would mean eating dirt, even while knowing what's to come, without any way to prevent it.
She looked back up the tree before looking back at her family. "I need more practice." She knew it was a bad attempt and needed to do more. She didn't want to hear it from Sakumo or Kakashi about that rocky attempt.
The people jumping around the village always made it look so easy.
Yuina practiced for maybe 15 minutes after the guys excused themselves to go fishing before she stopped. Now that she could feel her chakra she could start her experimentation and note taking. Her notebooks had been waiting for the opportunity, and it was free and easily accessible.
She couldn't leave the village without permission. She didn't think that was a good idea either with how weak she was. This meant that to better understand this world it needed to be within these walls. She also questioned whether all the elements were the same in this world, but that wasn't something she could test without proper equipment. She missed the lab.
Meanwhile, chakra was one of the most obvious differences between Earth and the Elemental Nations. She wondered about its potency, about measuring it by some form of unit, whether nature held the base nature of chakra or whether some were inherently elemental in nature – elemental by this world's standards. Water, Wind, Lightning, Earth, and Fire were all made of multiple chemical elements which only irritated her more. Reducing elements to those five was archaic thinking.
That didn't include Ying and Yang, which oddly sounded similar to the old concept of Aether. It also didn't include that some bloodlines would account for elements beyond the five. One of the village founders was known for Wood. As such, it wouldn't be inconceivable that the five elements were just common chakra compositions and therefore accepted as the elements.
Then there were questions about visibility and sensibility. Some of Sakumo's stories she listened to, she was more interested about learning about the world through second hand accounts, had mention being able to sense chakra. He once worked with a sensor, but when questioned apparently it was a learnable skill. 'Natural' sensors were just more sensitive and generally had a wider scope. Sakumo then used that as a springboard to explain why hiding one's presence was more than just hiding.
Visibility was another matter. She hadn't seen anything earlier despite exuding chakra out of her feet, yet supposedly sometimes it could be seen. An example that she knew of consisted of the Hyuga Clan whose dojutsu allowed them to see the chakra circulatory system. Potentially also ninjutsu? Was chakra transformative into ninjutsu or were ninjutsu's still inherently chakra. She didn't know enough about ninjutsu to comment more on the matter.
Then there was a matter of hand signs. They were the same as the Chinese zodiac from Earth, but here they were only hand signs to produce jutsus. They hadn't needed to use any to focus their chakra earlier for the tree exercise, but they surely served some purpose. What that purpose was left another question.
Yuina noted down all her theories and hypothesis in her notebook with fervor.
Her head snaped up when she heard a knock. Sakumo had knocked against the wall as her door was slid open. They were back already?
"Lunch is almost ready. Kakashi wanted to cook the fish we caught so let's be nice regardless of how it tastes."
Not only were they back but food was almost cooked? She glanced at her clock. Huh? It had been a little over three hours.
Yuina forgot how zoned out she could get when it came to research. She established that she could relax at home, but she should probably be more wary if ever anywhere else.
More importantly: Kakashi was cooking? "Of course!" She hoped Sakumo supervised to prevent the worse. She really didn't want to be swallowing bones. "How was fishing?"
"Pretty calming." Yuina grabbed Sakumo's hand as she led the way to the kitchen just in time to see Kakashi place the last plate on the table.
She released Sakumo's hand to sit in her spot. "How was the lake Kashi-chan?"
Kakshi's eyes lit up if only a little which almost made her pout. He shouldn't have to hide his feelings at home. "We caught trout!" He also learnt to walk on water, even with the small waves but he didn't want Yuina upset that he went ahead and learnt something without her. Not when he fished for the first time and they did it without her.
"Your awesome!" How could she not praise Kakashi when he looked happy. She picked up her chopsticks and took a bite. "This is really good!"
Kakashi was excited to hear that and took a bite himself.
There was something wrong with his sister's tastebuds. He watched as she enthusiastically ate more as he hesitantly took another bite. It wasn't inedible but it wasn't anything like dad's cooking. The skin isn't crisp and the meat was tough and oversalted.
Sakumo ate at a normal pace as he watched the two. He had such good kids. If only his wife could have been here to watch them grow up too.
