Still don't own Harry Potter.
It didn't take long. Two days later the plan was in place, and it was time to go. It was decided that it was no longer safe for the Potter family to stay at their house, so members of the order would be arriving momentarily to escort them to headquarters. Which James was actually pleased about. He knew that Sirius was having a hard time staying in his family's house twenty-four seven. Remus stayed there whenever he could, but he was often gone on order business, and the ministry knew he was close to Dumbledore, so it was important he stayed at his own house some of the time. Many of the order occasionally spent the night, often stopped by when their shift ended on guard duty, but they usually didn't stay long. The Weasleys did stay there full time, but James knew Sirius would feel better with him there, even if only until the school year started. Harry also would feel better being in the thick of things rather than hanging around at home.
Still, James didn't much like the idea of going into hiding. He didn't have good memories of the last time. Nevertheless, there wasn't much he wouldn't do for his family. Lily and Harry weren't safe here, and Sirius was family too.
There came a knock at the door. James opened it, and a startling amount of people trooped in. Remus brought up the rear, smiling. "Hello James," the marauders embraced.
"Good heavens, Moony," James laughed, clapping him on the back before turning back into the house to survey the guard. "Was it really necessary to bring the whole order?"
"Of course not," said Remus, seriously, as Tonks jumped in with "Only half the order!"
Lily and Harry entered the room just then. "Oooh, he looks just like I thought he would," said Tonks, "Watcher, Harry!"
"He looks just like you, James," said Kingsley.
"Except he has Lily's eyes," Elphias Dodge.
"Trust me, we have all heard that a million times before," Lily replied, smiling.
"Are you quite sure it's them, Lupin?" Moody growled. "It'd be a nice if we bring back some Death Eaters impersonating them."
"Oh, come on, Mad-Eye," James scoffed, cheerfully, "You've known me and Lily for years."
"And what would you and Sirius always tell me when I caught you snickering through meetings?"
"We're only pulling your leg," James replied, smirking. Harry chocked back a laugh.
"What form does your patronus take, Harry?" Remus asked.
"It's a stag," Harry answered.
"Mine is a doe," Lily offered, "So we're all deer together. Are interrogations over?"
Moody just grunted, but Remus took it as a signal to start introductions. There were nine of them, including Remus, which still seemed a little overboard to James.
"A surprising number of people volunteered to come and get you," said Remus, as if reading his mind, looking amused.
"Well, the more the better," Moody growled, "We're your guard, Potter." All three of them looked at him, not sure who he was referring to.
"We're just waiting for the signal to tell us it's safe to set off," said Remus, "We've got about ten minutes."
Moody swore under his breath as his eye remained pointed at the ceiling. "It's been sticking ever since that scum wore it." He popped it out with a squelch.
"Mad-Eye, you do realize that's disgusting, don't you?" Tonks pointed out.
Moody ignored her. "Do you mind getting me a glass of water?" He asked Lily, who at once crossed to the kitchen with a half-smile on her face. James wasn't sure what she found so humorous; he rather agreed with Tonks. "Cheers," Moody said, and started to wash his eye. "I want three-hundred-and-sixty-degree visibility."
"How are we getting wherever we're going?" Harry asked.
"Brooms," said Remus, "You're too young to Apparate. They'll be watching the flew network, and it's more than our life's blood to make an unauthorized portkey."
"Remus says you're a good flier," said Kingsley.
"He's more than good!" James bragged.
"What kind of broom do you have?" Tonks asked.
"A Firebolt," Harry said.
"Oh, wow, I'm still riding a Comet Two Sixty," Tonks said enviously. She glanced into a mirror, then examined herself critically. "You know, I'm not sure purple is really my color. Do you think it makes me look a bit peaky?"
"Er…" said Harry, looking confused.
"You look lovely as always, Tonks," Lily said.
"I don't know," James grinned, "I always preferred the lime green look."
"Oh please," Lily scoffed, "If we're talking about the most flattering, I think the pink looked best."
"I wasn't talking about most flattering. The lime green was hilarious."
Harry looked at his parents as if they had gone insane, while Tonks laughed. She screwed up her face and turned her hair bright pink. "I think you're right, Lily," she grinned.
"How did you do that?" Harry gasped.
Tonks explained her abilities, and she and Harry had a brief discussion about her abilities and work as an auror. At this point, Mad-Eye placed a disillusionment charm on all the Potter's; not that Lily and James really needed them. It was more the idea that if they were keeping Harry travelling with them a secret, it would be a bit of a giveaway if his parents were with them. Voldemort might hate them, but he did not pursue them with the relentlessness he did their son.
They all stepped outside. "Clear night," Moody grunted. "Could've done with a bit more cloud cover. Right, you, we're going to be flying in close formation. Tonks'll be right in front of you, keep close on her tail. You two," this time to Lily and James, "Will be on either side of him. Keep close. Lupin and Kingsley will be covering you from below. I'm going to be behind you. The rest'll be circling us. We don't break ranks for anything, got me? If one of us gets killed…"
"Is that likely?" Harry interrupted.
"No," said Lily.
"The others keep flying," Moody continued as if he hadn't been interrupted, "don't stop, don't break ranks. If they take out all of us and you survive, Harry, the rear guard are standing by to take over; keep flying east and they'll join you."
"Stop being so cheerful, Mad-Eye, he'll think we're not taking this seriously," said Tonks, strapping Harry's things to her broom.
"Our jobs to deliver them safely to headquarters and if we die in the attempt…"
"No one is going to die," said Kingsley.
"There's the first single," said Remus sharply, as red sparks flared in the sky. They all mounted. James was more than ready to get flying again. "And the second," said Remus, "Let's go."
It took a couple of hours what with Mad-Eye's round about route, but finally they landed outside Grimmauld Place. Harry was let into the secret, the house appeared, and the group trouped in.
Mrs. Weasley came hurrying towards them. "Oh, Harry, it's lovely to see you!" she whispered, hugging him. "You're looking a bit peaky, but dinner'll have to wait." She turned to the rest of group. "He's just arrived, the meeting's started…" They all filed into the kitchen, leaving Mrs. Weasley and the Potter's in the hall. Harry made to follow them but was stopped by Mrs. Weasley.
"The meeting's only for members of the Order. Ron and Hermione are upstairs, you can wait with them until the meeting's over and then we'll have dinner."
"But," Harry started to protest.
"We'll talk about it after the meeting," Lily said.
"I'll show you where you're sleeping," said Mrs. Weasley. She led Harry up the stairs and James followed his wife into the kitchen.
"Voldemort is getting stronger by the minute; we have to act now!" He caught Sirius' vehement, if quiet, exclamation as they entered. It went quiet as the group noticed their entrance.
"Hiya Padfoot," James grinned, and Sirius grinned back.
"What did we miss?" Lily asked as they sat down.
I did put in Sirius' line from the movie there at the end :)
