I guess I'm hoping that you'll end this reign
But it's my destiny to be the king of pain
Il always be king of pain
King of Pain by The Police
The SUV pulled up to the condo building at 6:30 a.m.
Cal and Perry stumbled their way into the elevators.
"You think Gillian really found the bastard responsible for the leak?" Perry swayed slightly before leaning against the elevator walls. Clearly feeling the effects of the long night of drinking and not sleeping.
"If Gillian felt confident enough to call me the second she found suffin out, I'd say she's reala onto someffin." Cal's words slurred, his accent even thicker as the alcohol ran its course. Placing his hand on the opposite wall of the elevator, he stabilized himself.
Perry looked over to Cal, leaning his body against the wall, closing his eyes, he started laughing.
Cals turned his head to look at him, laughing along with him.
"Maybe two bottles of Scotch… and no sleep wasn't the best of ideas."
The elevators dinged open, and the abrupt stop caused both men to almost fall over.
They both shuffled down the hall. Cal approached his door, stopping and turning to the side as Perry continued walking.
"G' night Perra" Cal called out, noticing Perry standing in front of Gillians' door.
"Going to bed, Doctor?... Gillian …might know who's responsible for the leak." He rested his hand on her door.
Cal jogged down to her room, standing next to Perry, stilling the man's hand as it was coming up before he could knock.
"Gillian doesn't need us barging in her room….wasted…at six in the bloody mornin."
"I need to know, doc" Perry said, leaning his body to get in Cal's face.
Fine, screw it; she's already up. My own curiosity is getting the best of me; I want to know what she found out. She's going to kill me when she sees us like this.
Cal moved to the side so Perry could knock. No answer. Perry knocked again, louder this time. No answer.
"She might have Fallen back to sleep?" Cal raised his brow, squinting his eyes. " nah shes always an early riser…maybe she left for some reason?"
"If she left then, she probably has information in her room about who leaked the story," he said, shrugging his shoulders up in a nonchalant manner.
Perry lifted his hand to the side of the door to reach the electronic keypad. Typing in a code into the keypad, causing the light to turn green.
Shit, what if she is in bed, still sleeping? Good morning darling don't mind us stumbling into your room.
Perry opened the door slowly, peeking his head in and around. Opening it wide and walking up with Cal behind him.
"ssssshe's not here," Perry sung out, walking around the room.
Cal walked over to the coffee table, seeing multiple files laid out next to her laptop. Sitting down on the couch in front of him, he thumbed through the documents as Perry came over to take a seat.
Both of the men's heads snapped up as the bathroom door opened, and Gillian walked out dripping wet, wrapped in a towel, with her back to them.
Both men watched silently, unable to speak. Gillian stopped walking as she approached the chair where her undergarments were laid out. Dropping the towel on the chair. Her entire back side in full view. Cals eyes trailed along her body, her skin lightly tanned and glowing. He looked from her toned calves and shapely thighs, up to her very shapely and well formed ass.
"Foster!" Cal all but shouted as his mouth hung open, standing quickly. His eyes burned with the knowledge of her naked body.
How is it that we have worked together this long and in less than a month you have already kissed her, groped her, and slept in bed with her? All the while stopping yourself from going any further at risk of going to far. Of crossing the line of friendship to something more. Everything I stop myself the universe places a cruel joke on me. This time to come face-to-face with your best friend's perfect naked ass and body to assault your mind. God, I swear you are punishing me. Not that seeing her like this is a punishment—quite the opposite, actually but it's bloody well torture not being able to do anything about it. Without a stitch of makeup and wet hair, she's still the most gorgeous human I have ever known. God wants me to suffer clearly, be in pain.
Gillian inhaled sharply, grabbing the towel to her chest as she quickly turned around. Pressing the towel to her breast with one hand and her other resting at her private area. The towel was not fully covering her as evidenced by the gap of coverage that aloud view of her hips and part of her ribs.
"What the hell, Cal!?" she shouted back at him. Gripping the towel tighter to herself. Looking at him with shock, her eyes finally noticed the large man still sitting on the sofa. "Perry?!" She looked at him with wide eyes and an open mouth.
Getting up from the couch, Perry walked closely to her.
"I have to say… it's always such a thrill when the reality is even better than the fantasy," he said, watching her taking in her body greedily with hunger in his eyes.
Gillians' mouth opened even wider, looking at Perry and then at Cal, who had walked quickly over to where the large man was standing. Cal held his arm out, placing his palm over his eyes so he could not see.
"What …are you two doing in my room?" Gillian asked in disbelief, looking between the two men before Cal had time to counter Perry's remark.
Shit, what are we doing in here? Think, man, think. Why did I drink that much? We walked in …and…naked Gillian…. Naked, wet Gillian in a tiny towel... Well that's not helping me remember, I'm pretty sure seeing her caused a full system reboot on my brain.
"I honestly….can't remember now…" Cal drunkenly answered, trying to keep his eyes on her face but failing, looking over her body and back at her face.
Gillian pulled the towel tighter, trying to cover more, her efforts caused the towel to fall slightly at the top, showing the outline of her breast.
Bloody hell, stop looking, you wanker. That's your best friend. A gentleman wouldn't stare…She didn't want you to be a gentleman. Stop that! She needs a good man—one that won't take advantage of her when she's drunk and one that won't ogle her when she's in just a towel. You gotta be a better man.
Cal's eyes could not help but widen in pure shock, disbelief, and desire. Placing his hand tighter around Perry's eyes, so he had no possibility of seeing anything.
Gillian adjusted the towel again and looked at both men, who were both swaying softly. Walking closer to Cal.
"Are you…two drunk?"
"We ad a cup a" Cal tried his best to sound sober but failed greatly.
"Yes, we are," Perry said at the same time as Cal. Grabbing his hand, he removed it from his face. A large grin made its way on his face as he swayed slightly back and forth.
Gillian stared in disbelief at the men in front of her, looking between the two intently.
I just want to touch her, I can touch her; that's fine. I touch her all the time. She's usually wearing a lot more clothes…not soaking wet…partially covered in a rather small towel.
Cal stepped closer to her, putting his hand on her chin and staring into her eyes.
She looked at him puzzled by the action but did not pull back. Just watched him in return.
"I just remembered why we are here! I got er voicemail."
Backing away from his hand, causing it to fall down her front, she brushed against the towel, her hand gripping it.
"You broke into my room… because of the voicemail I left you? You didn't think it could have waited until I was at least dressed!?" She all but yelled in disbelief, outraged by the men in front of her.
"In all fairness , we thought you might have left. We knocked and there wasn't an answer. We were hoping to find a file…folder…suffen."
"I have a master code," Perry added, looking to the ground with his shy admission.
"Well, that's reassuring to know." Gillian shook her head with annoyance at Perry.
"Go sit down.. the both of you," she pointed to the sofa. Then the men shuffled around and sat next to each other on the couch.
Gillian walked slowly backward, grabbing the phone on the wall. Dialing and pressing the phone to her ear.
"Good morning, this is Doctor Foster – Can we please get a large pot of coffee, two cups, and some sort of greasy breakfast…soak up some of that alcohol swimming in their stomachs." She half mumbled the last part In pure annoyance for the men. "Thank you so much." Hanging up the phone, she looked up at Perry and Cal, who were still staring.
"Eat, sober up, I'm going to get ready for the morning and…put clothes on." She tugged at the towel again. "Close your eyes," she said, nodding her head at the men.
"Je préfère vraiment regarder- I'd really rather watch." Perry mentioned before Cal's hand covered his eyes, then his own.
"no idea what you Just said mate but it better not have been inappropriate for your sake" Cal whispered to Perry.
Gillian snuck back into the bathroom in a rush, closing the door quickly behind her.
After hearing the door slam shut, Cal removed his hands, sliding them into his jacket pockets, before reclining back in his seat and closing his eyes.
"Today is going to be very difficult." Perry rubbed his jaw, blinking slowly and tiredly.
"oh ya mean cause we avent slept all night and drank two bottles of Scotch?" Cal joked with his eyes still shut, smiling to himself.
"I was actually gonna say working with Doctor Foster now that I have seen her more than half naked and dripping wet….but yeah, that too." Perry chuckled.
"Ehh!" pointing his fingers in a warning manner. Perry rose his hands up in defiance with a slight chuckle.
I feel the same way though, God, I wish I would have just come in alone. Because now that image isn't just stuck in my mind; it's in both mine and Perry's. Although if I came in alone I don't think I would have been able to keep my hands to myself….maybe Perry being with me really was the safer option.
A knock interrupted his thoughts as he got up to get to the door. A large trolley of coffee, juice, and breakfast items made its way into the room.
Cal's stomach growled at the site, realizing he had not eaten since dinner the night before.
Not that I even ate much then since the night turned into a total cluster fuck. Even drunk and annoyed with me, she still takes care of me. She's a bloody angel.
Gillian exited the bathroom finally dried off, dressed and ready for the day. Looking at the couch, she saw Perry and Cal reclined fully on the sofa, passed out asleep. The trolley was empty of its breakfast contents, empty plates on the coffee table in front of them. Chuckling to herself, she grabbed two blankets from the cabinet and placed one on each of the men.
Grabbing a note card from the stationery, she left a message for them. Propping the card on the table with a bottle of Tylenol behind it, she left for the morning.
Cal woke up with a pain in his neck, shifting his body up, realizing he fell asleep half on the couch and half on the coffee table. Looking at his watch, he read the time: 9.55am. Turning to his side, he saw Perry stretched out on the couch, the large man's legs taking up the majority of the couch. Glancing around the room, seeing no trace of Gillian, Cal saw a note card on the coffee table. He grabbed the card and saw the bottle behind it. Smiling to himself softly as he read.
'Be back at 10; keep resting, take two, G'
Where did she run off to? Or did she just want to get away from us, for which I don't blame her. Two drunken idiots barged their way into her room, while she had nothing but a towel to wear. Yeah, she probably wanted space from us plonkers.
Hearing a shift next to him, he saw Perry slowly waking up. Stretching his legs even further out, causing them to land on top of his own.
"Oi!" Tapping him on the legs, Perry dropped them to the floor.
"desole - sorry, what time is it?" He asked with a groggy yawn, trying to open his eyes.
"Almost ten a.m." he said, reaching forward, grabbing the bottle of Tylenol, opening it, and grabbing two for himself and two for Perry. Handing him the pills before reaching out and grabbing his now cold cup of coffee off the coffee table.
"Four hours of sleep is more than I thought we would get." Perry laughed as he tossed the pills in his mouth, grabbing his own cup of coffee.
"Thank God we don't have to attend an event tonight… where I have to be on my A game finding your thief. While you host and pretend nothing is wrong and that you trust all of your employees,"
"Yeah, that would be quite difficult in our current state…" laughing again, rubbing his hands over his face. "We are fucked."
Both of the men's heads snapped up in attention as they heard the front door open. Gillian walked in, wearing a shorter blue and white floral sundress different than her normal attire. The cap sleeves and tie in the back gave it a very soft and romantic look, accompanied by wedges. With her hair in soft curls to her breast line, she looked effortlessly stunning. Cal looked down at his disheveled appearance, then at Perry's. Both of there shirts partially unbuttoned and untucked from their waist bands. Wrinkled and clearly slept in.
Well, at least we both look like shit rather than just me.
Gillian turned around with a soft smile as an older man in a suit came into her room, hugging her tightly and picking her up off the ground as he embraced her. His hair was gray and his eyes blue—a very familiar blue. He could not see the man's face fully, but he already knew who he was.
Father Foster, well, I guess Father Copley. I've only met him two other times before. How lovely! I look like shit and have a hangover from hell. Don't even what to know what that man will think. I really must have done something to piss off God.
The man placed Gillian back on the ground, smiling warmly at her. Looking around the room, he caught sight of Cal giving him a nod, then seeing Perry return his gaze quickly to his daughter.
"honey…I'm afraid to even ask-"
"DAD! No they… they um we have a meeting this morning to go over some items for our case. This is Mr. Lavigne; he is the man who hired us." Walking over to Perry and Cal, Gillian signaled to Perry, who stood quickly, trying to straighten his dress shirt. Holding his hand out to shake the older man's hand with a warm smile on his face.
"And of course, Doctor Lightman, whom you have met before," she signaled to Cal, who stood and shook the man's hand.
"oh I do rememba him" his very deep New Yorker accent, causing Cal to pause.
How the hell is his accent so strong, and Gillian doesn't have any kind of accent? I wanted to ask last time, but I was too caught up in trying to look good to her father. As any other best friend would do meeting the parents…right?
"Perry, this is my father, Gordon Copley, New York City's new chief of police." She smiled proudly at her dad.
Both of the men's eyes widened in shock as they heard the words coming out of her mouth almost in slow motion.
"Did you say Chief of Police?" Cal asked, trying his best to hide his features from Gillian.
"I did… relax Cal he's not here to arrest you." She watched him, noticing the slight fear on his face. Looking at Perry, she saw he was holding his breath. Fear and concern in his eyes. Tilting her head slightly, curiously watching them, she bit her lip back, shushing herself from speaking.
Ah shit she saw that shit shit.
"Honey, I really need to get going to the precinct." Walking with him to the door, he bent down to kiss his daughter on the cheek. "love you kido"
"love you daddy," Gillian smiled warmly before closing the door and turning around, walking to the chair across from the sofa taking a seat.
"pouvez-vous juste dire papa une fois de plus? - can you just say daddy one more time?" Perry flirted, giving her a charming grin after he spoke, sitting back down on the sofa.
Gillian ignored him, crossing her legs and slowly watching the men in front of her. Cal sat nervously, waiting for her to speak.
"What did you two get yourselves into last night?" Gillian asked, looking between the two men.
"We were…bonding." Cal spoke up, smiling quickly to Perry before looking at Gillians' face, she was studying them; he knows that look.
"bonding?" Gillian asked incredulously, one eyebrow raised sharply.
"Yes bonding, after last night's…events I thought it would be best for us to talk, speak man to man, and have a couple drinks." Perry's smile faltered slightly at the questioning look Gillian returned him with.
"Perry, you do realize what we do for a living, right? That was a partial truth at best. Now what did you two do?" titling her head in observance.
"nuffin officer" Cal countered. "Need I remind you, I don't need to share all my dirty little secrets with you-"
"So it's a dirty little secrets?" Gillian interrupted leaning back in the chair.
"Why don't we talk about why we are in your room to begin with. What did you find out, luv?" Staring deeply into her eyes
"if that wasn't a deflection, I don't know what is" She looked eyes with him, unwavering. Intently searching for any microexpressions through his well practiced mask.
"I would love to find out what you found," Perry said, looking between the two and their stares.
Gillian broke her eye contact with Cal, looking at Perry and exhaling softly. Reaching across the coffee table to grab the files from it.
"I called Loker last night after we talked." Nodding to Cal and turning to look at Perry.
"We are of the same mind that someone on your team, was the reason behind the leak. That pushy reporter knew more than he was letting on. And he was looking for a reaction. He knew about our files, and he wouldn't have known that, if not for your report."
"The reports I pulled on you and Doctor Lightman were private; nothing was done with Lavi's name attached-"
"That is true…so it would take someone prolific in computers to do so…loker looked into all employees who might be computer savvy. He found one who actually had a bachelor's degree in computer technology…who also has a reason to get back at you…" Opening the folder, Gillian pulled out a photo, holding it up.
"Robert"
"But he forgave me, we are on good terms; he wouldn't-"
"You slept with his girlfriend, albeit an ex, but still had sex with her…he was angry, and he is still is angry at you. We could see how much rage and contempt he still very much has for you when we interviewed him."
Perry watched her speak in disbelief, shaking his head. Resting his elbows on his thighs, sitting wide on the sofa. He looked up directly at Gillian, seeing only her soft, reassuring smile.
"Well, that is unfortunate." Hanging his head low, he held his hands in front of himself, trying to keep his features strong. His sadness and anger etched their way onto his features.
"I'm so sorry, Perry." Gillian leaned forward, grabbing his hands and squeezing them softly.
Cal did his best to hide his jealousy and resentment.
She's just doing it to comfort him; that's it nothing more. She's always nurturing and caring. She's just being herself.
Perry pulled out one hand and placed it on top of hers.
"Thank you, Gillian…for telling me the truth." He gave her a sad smile, squeezing her hand back. Giving her a look of pure longing. Staring at her a little too long for Cal's liking. Cal watched as she returned his look with kind eyes and a hint of arousal of her own. His body was being taken over by a familiar green monster breathing down his neck.
O look they are having a lil moment. Perry would just love to know what Gillians really doing. I'm betting she only touched him to seem like she really cares for him. Not that she just wants to see what makes him tick….maybe it's not just that….maybe she is curious about what she saw but is also curious about the man herself. Maybe she reached out and held his hand because she does care, because she really is interested. She is showing slight arousal after all. Lovely fucking thought. Painful fucking thought.
Enraging himself with his own twisted thoughts.
Cal coughed lightly, and Gillian pulled her hand from Perry's grasp.
"That's Gillian for you…always there with the truth," Cal stated, bitterly while slouching his body dramatically on his elbow.
Gillian gave him a sharp, pointed look, quickly flashing pure frustration at him.
Perry stood up, giving her a soft smile. "thank you…both." Turning to Cal. "As odd as it may sound… I had a rather good time 'bonding' with you. Like I said I could use more honest friends." Cal stood up to shake his hand before Perry pulled him into a tight hug. Kissing him on the cheek before letting him go from his powerful embrace.
He still has to be hammered…
Gillian looked into his eyes, widening in surprise and amusement while biting back a grin.
"I'm going to head back to my room, I do have a party to get ready for after all. Doctor Lightman I had something sent to your room for you to wear tonight."
"What are you going to do about Robert?" Gillian questioned standing up from her chair.
"I'm not sure yet. So far, my plan includes smoking, taking another nap, and get ready for tonight. During that time, il think of what to do with Robert." His anger rose at the mention of Robert's name.
"I will see you in a couple hours, Gillian. J'ai hâte de voir ce que tu portes ce soir. Il y a beaucoup de concurrence avec la première chose que je t'ai vue ce matin, -I can't wait to see what you wear tonight. It has a lot of competition with the first thing I saw you in this morning." Grabbing her hand and bringing it up to his mouth for a kiss. As she closed her eyes and made a face of pure embarrassment.
The fuck did he just say to her? That's it I'm taking more French lessons…maybe Gillian would be willing to teach me more…
"Lightman, come on over if you need a little hair of the dog before the party, my friend." He smiled at Cal before walking out of Gillian's room.
Cal turned to speak to Gillian, but before he could say anything, she beat him to the start.
"my friend? Do you have a new friend, Cal?" She drew out his name teasingly, a large grin on her face as she leaned her body closer to him.
"what eh say to you?" pointing at her face with his finger, turning his head to better read her.
"What did you guys do last night?" She tilted her head, copying him, her grin still present.
"Deflection, darling, what'd eh say?" He moved even closer to her personal bubble. Now standing near inches apart. She did not cower nor move. Simply bit back her grin, looking him dead in the eyes.
"I'll tell… if you tell" she said in a soft, husky voice, smiling at her coyly.
"So it was someffin naughty," he teased back, giving her a cocky grin. Backing away from her and shoving his hands in his pockets, he started walking to the exit.
"I could say the same thing to you. For whatever you guys where upto last night." She raised a knowing brow.
Stopping at the door, he turned to see Gillian closely behind him.
"I should get going, long night. I need more sleep, more coffee and a shower, and il be right as rain." He grinned cheekily but stopping when he realized he saw embarrassment when he mentioned the shower.
"darling…you have nuffin to be embarrassed about, and I mean nuffin" he could feel his mask faltering, revealing his true desires as he spoke. He saw Gillians eyes darken, reflecting with her own desire.
"Well thanks….atleast I have the Cal Lightman stamp of approval." She chuckled lightly, shaking her head still in embarrassment.
"More than the stamp of approval, like five Michellen stars approved," he leaned closer to her and watching as a large smile spread across her face.
Pushing him away with her hand. "go to bed," she laughed, shaking her head.
Leaning forward and kissing her on the cheek. "Good night, darling." Turning around and leaving her room, he made his way to his own.
Alright… bed….shower…Gillian in the shower….Gillian in bed. Stop that. OK, go to bed thinking… of Gillian in the shower. The fuck is wrong with you mate? God's torturing you slowly, I must have screwed up badly to deem this fair karma. Look at your almost naked best friend…but don't touch her. Have her making out and grinding against you in all but a t shirt… but stop her cause if you let it go further, you will destroy both of your bloody lives….thank you God. Anything else you wanna throw at me? I'm running out of willpower here and I can't take much more of this pain in my heart. It's a lose lose. Stay away from her from the woman you love and your heart feels like it's being ripped out of its cavity everyday... Finally tell her how you feel, make a move and pray she feels the same. Which in reality, all of our flirting could just be that… could just be flirting and she doesn't want to take it further. A woman like her is simply not interested in the likes of me… you make a move she shoots you down boom your heart broken. Lets say hypothetically she does want more, how long before you screw it up and break her heart breaking your own along with jt. I'd rather be the only one in pain then risking causing her any. Il be the king of pain before I let that happen.
Turning on the shower, he started undressing, preparing to enter.
Alright, mate, shower, sleep, coffee and get ready for tonight. This will definitely be an interesting party, to say the least.
Stepping into the shower and letting the water run over him. Cleansing him of the Scotch, no sleep, and wild decisions from the night.
Shower, sleep, Gillian….Gillian in the shower….well…there's an image.
Next chapter, finally party time!
