Chapter 9. Festival and stew

It was a beautiful sunny Sunday morning and from the small window of her apartment Riza could notice the constant movement of people. Living so close to the center of the city, she could easily find out when there was some striking event or happening, which had even helped her to be aware of any altercation that happened even outside her working hours. But on this occasion it all seemed to be due to the festival that had just arrived in East City.

Riza was not very adept at attending events with large crowds of people but, considering that she now had a puppy with high doses of energy, it seemed like a good opportunity to go for a walk with Black Hayate and also enjoy the much-talked about festival of local products.

After some years of relative stability after what happened in Ishval, the citizens of several towns in the Eastern area had organized this festival to share their products, food, handicrafts, animals, among other things, with the people who lived in East City, seeking to attract their attention to motivate them to visit their places of origin and thus give a boost to the economy of their respective regions.

Figuring that people would need time to set up their stalls, Riza had a leisurely breakfast in her apartment, did the respective training with Black Hayate, attended to some pending matters and got ready to go out on the streets around noon. Since it was a summer day, Riza had decided to wear her hair pinned up as she commonly wore it at work since she had let it grow out.

As soon as Riza and Black Hayate were on the street, she could sense the cheerful air that seemed to cover the area. Groups of friends, families and couples were chatting animatedly as they made their way to the festival. The sight of these groups of people, especially families, involuntarily gave her a slight pang of envy. It pleased her to see happy people but reminded her that she didn't have a family to share such events with.

As if reading her thoughts, Black Hayate brought his nose close to her leg and began to wag his tail happily in a clear sign that he was looking forward to the day's ride. This action elicited a smile from Riza. She had not previously considered the option of adopting a pet but, in the short time Black Hayate had been in her life, the energetic puppy had earned a special place in her heart and was helping her cope with the loneliness that sometimes felt unbearable, especially when longing made her remember the good times she had lived through having lived several years with her father's naive apprentice and years later, if only for a very short period of time, with her young son.

Securing the leash in her hands, Riza continued on her way to the festival, taking the opportunity to give Black Hayate a few instructions to familiarize him with the way he should behave in the streets in the hope that she would soon be able to take him to some of the supervisions with her.

The festival was in the main park of the city, so there was considerable space for the various stalls and they had even left some places free designating them as areas where people could sit and enjoy the products purchased at the event.

Just a couple of blocks away, Riza could hear the music coming from the park. Unlike the quiet piano and violin tunes broadcast by the city's radio station, this music had a distinctive lively feel to it with the use of guitars, tambourines, maracas and other instruments she could not identify.

Because of the liveliness of the music, she was not surprised when, upon reaching the entrance to the park, she could perceive an area designated for dancing, where dozens of people were happily dancing to the rhythm of the songs. Stopping a few steps away from the dance area, Riza stood contemplating until the song in progress ended. During that brief moment, she couldn't help but crack a slight smile as she remembered the last time she danced, or at least tried to, since she learned a little at the small fair that used to be held in her hometown. On that occasion, she was practically dragged to that event and onto the dance floor by a black-haired teenager who was then her friend. She inhaled deeply as she closed her eyes for a few seconds to enjoy the memory.

After those brief seconds of happy memories and a bit infected by the joy of the people she had observed, Riza crossed the main entrance of the festival and found a large number of stalls and people. Accompanied by Black Hayate, who wagged his tail incessantly denoting his approval of the place, Riza went through the various stalls, stopping at a couple of them to buy some things.

The more time passed, the more she enjoyed the festival. There was not a single place where people did not welcome her with a smile and started chatting with her, kindly sharing some recipes or tips and inviting her to get to know each of the towns they came from. On a couple of occasions, Black Hayate even benefited from receiving a few pieces of chicken or some fresh milk.

Overall, the atmosphere at the festival was full of friendliness and joy so, after several minutes had passed, she was startled to hear the sound of a falling object followed by an extremely concerned voice not far from where she was standing.

"Oh my God!"

Worried about what might have happened, Riza headed in the direction from where she had heard the noise. As soon as she turned around to get to the source of the sound, she could notice three things: a small group of people had gathered around a fruit stand which was semi-destroyed by the fall of one of the poles supporting it; right in front of the stand squatted a familiar armor and near the armor the flash of blue light told her that a transmutation was in progress.

Carefully Riza made her way through the group of people, standing almost next to Al when the transmutation was finished. Following this, she was able to confirm that a boy in a red coat had just stood up after finishing the repair of the stall as the people around him looked on in amazement.

"Thank you very much, young man! How can I repay you?" Exclaimed an older woman, who appeared to be the owner of the business.

"It's nothing. Don't worry." Ed replied as he bent down again to help his brother pick up the fruits that had fallen after the accident.

Both boys picked up all the fallen fruits and then deposited them in the repaired baskets of the stand. They were about to turn around to continue on their way when the lady said to them. "Youngsters, at least take some fruit with you. It's the least I can do for you."

Ed and Al looked at each other for a few moments. "Well, if you insist." Ed replied as he took an apple.

"Oh, but that's not enough. Take the whole basket."

Ed seemed to think about his answer for a few seconds and then smiled. "How about this? This is my first time attending a festival like this and I'm a little lost. Could you recommend me any food stalls?"

"Of course, young man." The lady came over and put a hand on his shoulder as she began to give him the necessary directions and signs to the stall she was recommending. As this was happening, Riza watched the scene with a smile. He had earned the nickname of the People's Hero for a reason. "When you arrive tell them you're going on Tabatha's behalf. I'm sure they'll get you a double ration." Concluded the lady with a smile.

"Great, thanks." Ed wiped the apple with his sack and took a bite. "By the way, this apple is delicious." With that said, Ed and Al started to walk away leaving a group of people at the stand, interested in buying after hearing the comment.

Deciding that it was already enough time to be a spectator, Riza broke away from the group of people and followed the path the brothers had taken. "Edward. Alphonse."

The brothers turned and Riza could see that Ed was in the middle of taking one more bite out of his apple. "Lieutenant Hawkeye." Al exclaimed cheerfully and soon after the 4 of them closed the distance between them.

"Hello, Lieutenant." Ed said as soon as they were in front of her. Riza couldn't help but notice that Ed stared at her a little surprised until Al nudged him.

"Is something wrong?" asked Riza.

"Uh, no. It's just that I think this is the first time I've seen you out of uniform. Sometimes I forget that you have casual clothes." Ed replied with a slight chuckle.

" Brother, you shouldn't stand around looking at people like that." Al scolded him.

"But I was curious." Ed replied. "Besides didn't she catch your eye too?" the blond asked then took another bite of his apple.

"Well I have to admit it did." Ceded Al. "If you were wearing your hair down I probably wouldn't have recognized you, Lieutenant."

"Being honest with you I think I have more uniforms than casual clothes." Riza said with a smile. "I thought you were still at New Optain." She added changing the subject of the conversation.

"We actually arrived Friday afternoon." Replied Al with a glance at his brother.

Ed smiled. "Come on, Al. The Colonel can live a few extra days without my report."

"Brother, we had plenty of time to go deliver your report."

"And start my weekend off wrong by seeing his face? No way." Ed replied taking the last bite of his apple.

Al made a resigned sighing sound. "And this is what happens every time we come back from some mission." Said Al turning to Riza.

"Don't worry, Alphonse. The Colonel tends to get behind on his paperwork. Although if it comes to a situation where Edward's report is of utmost importance I would have to step in."

Knowing how rigid Riza could be when it came to work, Ed felt a slight shiver run through his body. "At least this isn't the case, isn't it?"

"Take it easy, Edward. Your report is still on time."

Ed sighed in relief. "So what brings you here, Lieutenant? Are you enjoying the festival?"

"Yes, quite a bit. The atmosphere is very pleasant. Besides, it's an excellent opportunity to walk Black Hayate and thus teach him some rules of behavior in front of other people." Replied Riza bending down to pet the puppy's head.

"Do you still have some free time, Lieutenant?" Riza nodded at Ed's question. "Wouldn't you like us to give you a tour? Al and I know how to identify where the best products and most curious things are."

Riza smiled. Whenever the Elric brothers were in the office she really enjoyed their presence. Besides, she liked seeing Ed so relaxed. "I'd love to."

"Let me help you, Lieutenant. That way you can see everything better." Al kindly offered, taking the paper bag Riza was holding.

"Thank you, Alphonse." She replied as she gave the boys a small smile.

And so began the tour along with the Elrics. Riza had enjoyed the festival just being with Black Hayate but now the experience was even better. Ed and Al were overflowing with enthusiasm and shared various anecdotes when they found products that reminded them of Resembool. Even their little friendly sibling squabbles were fun as they only ended up conveying how much they trusted each other and their sibling love and concern. Riza kept her smile all the way through, feeling a warmth fill her inside. Even though she felt it wasn't right, it almost felt like they were family. It was as if they were sharing a family Sunday having fun together.

When they reached the area designated for the small restaurants, Riza and Al stood on a bench chatting while Ed went to find the stall that the lady from earlier had recommended. Moments later he returned with a few meat skewers in a paper bag. He stood in front of Riza and held the paper bag out to her, offering her what he had bought. Riza thanked him and took a skewer.

"Any luck, brother?" Al asked.

Ed sat down next to his brother giving a sigh. "Yes and No. They say as far as they know, no stall cooked it up. But Mrs. Tabatha was right. As soon as I mentioned her they gave me all this. They didn't want me to pay them but as soon as I got a chance I snuck some money into their tip jar." Ed said before starting to eat one of the skewers.

"Well, there are several stalls. We can keep looking. Maybe there's one out there that sells it but they don't have it well advertised." Al replied.

"Nah, that's fine, Al. Besides now I've got all this stuff." Replied Ed in a nonchalant tone as he pointed with his head to the paper bag with the streamers.

"You sure?"

"Mmm-huh." Ed nodded as he finished eating the skewer he had taken.

Riza silently watched the brief exchange of words between the brothers. She could tell that, even though Ed seemed unconcerned, in a moment some disappointment crossed his gaze. She was very curious about what Edward was looking for but decided it would be better to let the boy enjoy his meal and, perhaps later if she had the chance, she would ask Alphonse about it.

After the short lunch break, they resumed their tour to visit the last remaining stalls of the festival. To the Elrics' surprise, they came across one of their old neighbors from Resembool selling wool and some clothing made from it. The cheerful conversation was not long in coming so Riza opted to separate a little from them along with Black Hayate to give them their space.

After a few minutes Riza noticed that the salesman began to offer several articles of clothing to Edward while he kept up the conversation with him. Taking advantage of this, Al walked over to where she was standing.

"He seems like a nice person." Riza told him.

"Yes, his name is Henry. He is one of the most important sheep breeders in Resembool. He's very nice but sometimes he gets excited with his talks. Look." Al pointed discreetly at his brother, who couldn't suppress a small grimace when the man laid a glove on him as he continued to talk on and on. "I bet my brother is just waiting for the perfect opportunity to duck out." He added with a slight chuckle.

Riza smiled and they both stood watching the situation amused for a few more seconds until Riza broke the silence. "Alphonse, can I ask you a question?"

"Of course, Lieutenant."

"What was it Edward was looking for earlier?" The armor shot a glance at his brother, debating whether or not to answer. Seeing this Riza added. "Sorry, you don't have to answer. I was just curious."

Al returned his gaze to Riza. "Oh, don't worry about it. It's nothing wrong it's just that my brother is a little weird about what he shares or doesn't share. But I don't think there's anything wrong with him telling you, after all it's just stew."

"Stew?" Riza asked in confusion.

"Yeah, it's just that my brother really loves stew. It's his favorite food. The bad thing is that he pretty much only eats it when we're at Granny Pinako's house. A couple of times he's eaten it here in town but he always complains that it doesn't taste good. He says that they put weird stuff in it."

"Oh, I see. So he wanted to see if there was a stall that sold stew."

"Yes, maybe it's because of the freshness of the ingredients but from what I remember, Granny Pinako's stew is delicious. I can't speak about the ones they prepare here, but I think she prepares the best stew I've ever tasted. Well..." Al lowered his head. "It's very good, but it doesn't compare to the one Mom used to make. I loved it too, although I must admit that Ed was always the one who got the most excited when he found out Mom was making it." Al raised his head again trying to cheer himself up by speaking in a slightly amused tone. "I think Mom made it often because it's one of the few ways my brother consumes some milk."

Despite not being able to see Alphonse's expression, Riza could tell the nostalgia with which he was thinking about his mom. She understood how hard it was to grow up without a mother but, for better or worse, she lived the years after his death with her father while the Elrics had been left alone. She didn't doubt that Mrs. Rockbell had done a good job seeing to them but she knew that the children had spent several nights completely alone in their home while studying alchemy.

Trying to lighten the mood Riza replied. "I find it amazing that there is a dish prepared with milk that Edward willingly eats."

Al let out a chuckle. "I know. Equally if not more incredible is how glistening his plate is when it comes to stew." Al looked at his brother and let out a sigh-like sound. "Too bad we didn't find it today."

"Have you ever tried to prepare it?"

"When we lived in Resembool we tried it a couple of times but honestly it didn't taste very good. And now my brother opts for quick and easy meals to prepare. Occasionally I help him prepare something, although there really aren't many options since we don't have a refrigerator to store ingredients in the dorm."

At that moment Edward managed to slip away from Henry and quickly approached them and then took one of Al's gloves between his hands. "Al, quick. We have to go before he finishes tending to that lady."

"Don't you want to keep chatting with him?" Al asked amused, to which Ed frowned. "Just kidding."

Heeding Ed's words, the four of them walked away from the site.

As they visited the last few booths of the festival, Riza kept thinking about an idea that had popped into her head and was thinking about how to pull it off discreetly. She really wanted it to be a surprise.

When they were outside the park, Ed stretched his arms out and placed them behind his head. "Wow, there sure were several booths."

"Yeah, I hope they do that again more often." Al looked at Riza and bowed his head slightly in a respectful manner. "Thank you for joining us, Lieutenant." He said as he handed her back her shopping bag.

Riza smiled, "Thanks to you. I actually enjoyed the festival more being with you."

Ed smiled as well. "Well, I guess the same thing happened to us, didn't it, Al?" The armor nodded.

Seeing Ed's smile, Riza decided to put her plan into action. "Guys, I don't want to bother you but do you think tomorrow, after the work shift is over, you could come over to my apartment and help me fix a few things?" She lowered her gaze to Black Hayate. "Someone's been very active these days."

"Of course, Lieutenant." Al replied.

Ed glanced at the clock resting at the entrance to the park, which indicated that it was 3:20pm. "It's still a good hour, wouldn't you rather we help you today?"

Prepared for that kind of answer Riza replied. "I'd like to but I'm meeting a friend for lunch."

"Oh, don't worry. We'll help you tomorrow without fail." Ed replied.

After chatting some more the boys said their goodbyes and Riza stood watching them until they disappeared around a block. Smiling, she bent down and lovingly stroked the puppy's head. "Sorry to make you look like the bad boy of the day." Black Hayate simply wagged his tail happily. "Now we have to hurry if we want this to go well."

Riza stood up and began to examine the bag with her purchases. Realizing she was missing several vegetables she glanced at the entrance to the festival deciding to visit again. The fresher the ingredients the better.

After buying the vegetables and some spices, Riza headed back to her apartment, first passing by the store where she usually shopped to buy some butter.

Arriving at her apartment, Riza gave his food to Black Hayate and set about preparing the stew. It had been many years since she had prepared it. Her father didn't care much about what she fed him but when he made it a habit to eat while studying and working on his theories, Riza had opted to prepare more solid food. For this reason, she was a little unsure about how the dish she was going to prepare would taste, but she wasn't going to let that stop her. It didn't matter if it didn't turn out the first time, she had all afternoon and Sunday night to perfect the recipe.

As she was preparing the recipe, some memories began to pop into her thoughts. It had been too long since she had prepared a meal to share with someone, the last time had been when she shared the apartment with her friend Rebeca, with whom despite their different personalities, they had a very pleasant time. But some of the memories she treasured the most were from the time when she lived with her father, precisely when Roy appeared in her life. With their ensuing friendship and courtship, she began to really enjoy cooking for him. Riza had no problem cooking alone but, with Roy's stubbornness, he would end up helping her. She couldn't forget that time when he was so busy with all the books his father had given him to read that Roy had tried to cut the vegetables while reading so as not to fail to help her, ending up with a couple of sliced fingers and a bruised ego. She also couldn't forget how much he loved spinach quiche, which is why the couple of times they met after Roy's departure to the academy, she made it for him. At all these memories, Riza began to smile.

In the middle of her preparation, someone knocked on the door, so Riza wiped her hands on a towel and went to her door, checking to see who it was before opening it, though her prior check wasn't entirely necessary because Black Hayate was excited to greet her visitor.

"Hi, Riza!" Rebeca said cheerfully as she entered the apartment hugging her friend and then petting the puppy. "Hi, little guy!" To which Black Hayate responded with a bark as he wagged his tail happily.

"Hi, Becky!" replied Riza smiling. "What brings you out here? I thought you were on a date."

Riza started to head back to the kitchen to check that she wasn't going to burn her preparation followed by her friend who sat in one of the chairs at the table.

"Well I was, but it was one of the worst dates I've ever been on. At most it lasted an hour and I'm being generous in saying that. Apparently there are no good guys around these parts." Rebeca said a little disappointed.

"I'm sorry, Becky."

Rebeca shook her head. "Don't worry, I'll keep looking for my millionaire prince charming to get me out of work." She said jokingly. "So what are you up to, don't tell me you're having a date and I'm barging in here?"

Riza smiled, "No, not at all. You know perfectly well I'm not looking for a relationship."

Rebeca crossed her arms in front of her chest. "Well what a waste that you're not out looking for a man to get you out of the military, my friend. I think you could use a boyfriend, maybe you'd even have better luck than me."

"You know I lost the right to have a normal life a long time ago." Riza replied in a neutral tone.

Rebeca frowned. "I think you are punishing yourself for the things that fate itself forced you to do."

"Fate didn't force me, it was my own choices and I have to face the consequences of my actions."

Rebeca sighed. "Riza, you are my friend and you know how much I appreciate you. I really want you to be happy."

"Becky, I appreciate your concern and good wishes, but as I told you, I lost the right to be happy by leaving my son behind." Riza replied with a slightly sad tone.

Rebeca stood up and walked over to Riza, placing her hands on her shoulders, looking into her eyes and softening her expression. "I understand how much that affected you, friend, but if you hadn't, he probably wouldn't have had the chance to even be born. I would have loved to have been able to be by your side to meet my godson in person but you did what was best for him, to protect him."

"Yes, I know. But it would seem that wasn't enough for me because to top it off I had to go to Ishval." Riza said in a bitter tone.

Rebeca gently squeezed her friend's shoulders. "I know you were given orders, Riza. Despite everything, you are very brave because you have moved on and continue to work hard from your trench for the betterment of the country instead of running away and trying to forget the past. For that reason, you also need to move on with your personal life, you are a very beautiful, young and kind-hearted woman. Any man would be lucky to have you."

Riza cracked a slight smile. "Thank you, Becky, but as I told you I don't deserve that and besides I don't have time for such things."

Rebeca snorted and pulled her hands away from her friend's shoulders. "Come on, Riza. Let the whole ball of slackers in your unit do their job and spend that time for yourself. That bunch of useless good-for-nothings are old enough as it is for you to be babysitting and herding them to get it done. Especially that Havoc."

Riza couldn't help but smile slightly at how her friend referred to her coworkers, but especially Havoc. Some time ago Havoc, being completely drunk, had had the fabulous idea of flirting with Rebeca on an occasion when they had gone out to have fun at a bar. Obviously it didn't go as expected and her friend wouldn't forget it so easily although, honestly, Riza believed that there was possibly an attraction between them despite Havoc's lousy attempt at flirting, but, as with her and Roy, the anti-fraternization law stood between them, not to mention their enormous pride that prevented them from being sincere with their feelings. In other circumstances, Riza would have teased Rebeca a little with Havoc but refrained from doing so thinking that maybe everything was better that way as long as they were both in the military.

Before Riza could respond to her words, Rebeca continued with her speech, because once Rebeca Catalina started talking it was almost impossible to stop her. That was just the way she was.

"Besides...he goes merrily from date to date right under your nose, why can't you do the same?" Rebeca said with distaste evident in her tone.

Riza knew Rebeca was referring to Roy. She shook her head. "He's a single man and has the right to do what he pleases with his life." She trusted Rebeca, but knew it was better not to mention the truth after Mustang's dates.

"Even so. After you told him everything, he must have insisted you to leave the military, marry you, and make you happy." She sighed in exasperation. She lowered her tone of voice a little. "For God's sake, Riza, you had a child from him. It's the last straw that he didn't insist you give up this lifestyle, because I'm sure this lifestyle is because of your decision to follow and support him."

Riza sighed. "Becky, that's impossible. It's something we both agreed after our actions in Ishval, we will only work together so neither of us are going to pursue a romantic relationship with each other. We will only focus on continuing to work to improve the country for our son and other generations. So we are both free to lead our personal lives as we please. What was between us I don't think can ever be repeated." She said this last with an almost imperceptible sadness, which could only be perceived by people like Rebeca and Roy.

Riza checked her stew again and when she saw that it was ready, she decided to turn off the stove.

"Tell me, do you still love him? Is he the reason why you haven't opened yourself to the possibility of falling in love again?" Rebeca asked suddenly.

Riza thought about her answer, as she knew that whatever she said, Rebeca could use it against her to tease her.

Deciding to play it safe, Riza replied. "I don't know, Becky. It's been too long and now we only share a working relationship. Besides, even though we have come to an agreement, I know that a lot of things fractured between us when I confessed to him that I had hidden his own son from him. Sometimes I think that that can never be repaired or that he can never fully forgive me and I don't blame him for that."

"From what you told me at the academy, he wasn't a jerk like he is now, so I want to believe that deep down he'll forgive you one day. But I'd bet my whole month's salary that you still love him even though he doesn't deserve it. Remember, we're talking about the father of your child, the only man in your life..." Realizing that the conversation was taking a sad turn for her friend, Rebeca decided to lighten the mood. "Unless you've had other affairs that you haven't told me about." Rebeca said this last in a joking tone.

"Rebeca." Riza scolded her lightly.

"Calm down, Riza, I was only joking." Rebeca said raising her hands in a sign of peace. "Besides, I'm just curious because I care about you."

Riza sighed. "Like I told you, it's been a long time since I've thought about it. What I can tell you is that I'm not going to deny you that I esteem him and that I can consider him my friend."

Rebeca nodded and decided not to press the matter any further, because she knew it was a sensitive and painful subject for her friend. Even though Riza wouldn't tell her the depth of her feelings, she figured she still had feelings for Mustang.

"Okay, now tell me, what are you making? It smells really good."

Riza smiled slightly. "If you'd like to go in and wash your hands and have a seat, I can invite you to eat with me."

"Of course I'll take you up on that. Since my date was terrible we didn't even get to the main course. Besides, your stew smells delicious." Rebeca headed off to wash her hands while Riza started serving the food for the two of them.

Once they were seated, as they began to eat, Riza couldn't help but feel happy that her stew tasted good and not just for her, but for her friend as well. I hope Edward likes it too, it's probably been a long time since he's had a chance to eat a home-cooked meal.

"Well? You haven't told me who you cooked this for. It looks to me like more portions than you usually prepare for yourself, so I gather you plan to invite someone, don't you?" Rebeca asked with a mischievous tone.

Keeping her expression neutral, Riza replied. "That's right, I made several servings of stew because I plan to invite someone over for dinner tomorrow. I made it from today because I wanted to practice my seasoning. It's been a long time since I've done that."

Rebeca's smile widened. "Don't tell me that everything you told me earlier was all theater and you're hiding your relationship with a handsome man from me... or don't tell me you're getting back together with the Fire Lord." She said as she wiggled her eyebrows suggestively.

"Of course not, Becky. I didn't lie to you." Riza replied a little indignantly. "I made the stew to invite the Elric brothers to eat."

Quickly Rebeca understood. Although she had no dealings with the pair of siblings, she knew that Riza in one way or another procured them and understood it was because she empathized with them as orphans and also imagined it was part of her maternal instinct that she was unable to experience. She didn't blame her, even though she was too young when she was pregnant, Rebeca realized how her love for her baby had grown while she was pregnant and she knew that to this day she still loved her child and would continue to do so until her last breath. She also had no doubt that, had the circumstances been different, she would have been an excellent mother to her son.

"You're very good, Riza." Rebeca finally said, smiling at her friend.

Riza shook her head. "Not at all. I just want to offer the boys a nice home-cooked meal. Alphonse told me it was a very special dish for them because it reminded them of their mother, but unfortunately they hadn't been able to find a good stew around these parts."

Rebeca, pointing her spoon at Riza, said. "Of course you're very good. Not just anyone would go to the trouble of preparing a meal for a couple of other people's children." She paused slightly. "I insist that you should allow yourself to be happy friend and start a family so that you can give me nieces and nephews whom I can spoil. You'd make a wonderful mother."

"Thank you for the compliment, but I stand by my position. I would rather be your children's aunt." Riza replied with a smile.

Rebeca returned the smile. "You will be, just as I will be yours, because I won't tire of harping on you about it. I'm not going to be left wanting to spoil your children." She said jokingly.

Riza couldn't help but laugh lightly. "You better hurry up, Becky, so I can see to it that you don't go spoiling your own children with your nonsense." She added continuing to play along.

The two friends shared the rest of the afternoon enjoying each other's company until it was time for Rebeca to leave for her apartment.

The next day, the workday went normally at the Mustang team office. Roy slacked off at times, the guys were occasionally distracted by banter and Riza kept working on her business, interrupting herself a couple of times to throw a few glances at her coworkers that were more than enough to send them back to their work activities. Also, as she had imagined, Edward arrived near the end of the shift to deliver his report. The typical argument inside Roy's office was not long in coming and, after a few minutes, Ed returned to the main office to join his brother, mumbling as he walked.

As soon as his brother was near him, Al said. "Brother, can't you have just one civil conversation with the Colonel?"

Ed folded his arms and frowned. "It's not my fault. That asshole doesn't know how to behave."

Al made a sighing sound. "It's actually hard to tell who's the one starting the fights."

"Obviously him! He always has to make his 'casual' comments with that dumb smug grin."

"I'd better not comment any further on that." Al concluded as he began to bid farewell to the team members.

Reluctantly, Ed tried to send his annoyance to the back of his mind and bid everyone farewell. As soon as he headed for the door, he turned in Riza's direction. "Lieutenant, we'll wait for you at the entrance until you get unoccupied."

Riza cracked a small smile. "Yes, Edward. I'll be on my way in a few minutes."

Both Elrics left the office leaving an intrigued group of men watching Riza. She felt their stares but preferred to leave them wondering while she filled out a few more papers. When the clock struck the time to leave, the curiosity of the Mustang team members increased even more as they noticed her arranging the things on her desk and getting ready to leave. Riza never left at the general departure time.

Riza stood up and settled her bag. "See you tomorrow." She said addressing her colleagues.

"See you tomorrow, Ma'am." They replied in unison.

Riza walked all the way to the door until she noticed Havoc pushing Fuery towards her. Fuery was a bit shy and the youngest of the unit leaving aside the Elrics. But at the same time he was very dedicated and probably was the one who had the least to be "kindly" reminded by her that he had to work.

Fuery was fiddling nervously with his fingers when he finally mustered up the courage to speak. "Uh... Lieutenant?" Riza nodded as a sign that she heard him. "Forgive the intrusion into your private life but I think we all have a question, why are the Elrics waiting for you?"

With her characteristic seriousness, she replied. "Because we have an date." Out of the corner of her eye Riza could notice how the cigarette fell from Havoc's mouth. "Lieutenant Havoc, even if you are trying to match the Colonel's numbers, that doesn't mean that every date is the romantic type." At these words, Havoc quickly retrieved his cigar and continued to pretend to work. "The Elrics are going to help me repair some things in my apartment."

"Oh, I see!" Fuery exclaimed somewhat embarrassed at having to be the one to make the inquiries.

" Gosh, I don't know why they always say that we women are too curious about other people's affairs. I guess whoever says it hasn't met you guys."

Fuery blushed slightly and the others began to whistle and avert their gazes. "I'm sorry, Lieutenant. I hope you have a nice evening."

Riza cracked a smile, somewhat amused with the situation. "No worries, Fuery." She said in a calm voice. "And thank you, I think we'll have a nice time. See you tomorrow." With that said she left the office and the others resumed their activities.

After a few minutes the colonel's voice could be heard from his office. "Lieutenant."

Everyone knew he was referring to Riza but, in the absence of her, Breda decided to go see her boss.

As soon as Roy saw Breda standing in his office doorway, he raised an eyebrow. "I was referring to Lieutenant Hawkeye."

"She left a few minutes ago, sir."

Roy's eyebrow went up even higher before he glanced at the clock resting on his desk. "The Lieutenant never leaves at this time."

"Apparently she had an appointment with the Elrics." Breda replied denoting that he too was surprised by Riza's early departure. " She said they were going to help her repair some things."

"That's odd, why wouldn't she have asked me?"

"Probably so as not to give you any more excuses to avoid your paperwork." Breda said with a smile.

Roy grimaced but a few seconds later a smile appeared on his face. "Good." He got up and stood near the door frame to one side of Breda. "Gentlemen, I think we're done for the day."

Breda maintained his smile. "I knew something like this would happen, but I'm not complaining."

After having a pleasant conversation on the way to Riza's apartment, the 3 of them arrived at their destination after walking a few minutes. As soon as she opened the door, a blurry black and white blob shot out towards the entrance almost knocking Ed down in the process.

"Whoa!" The blond exclaimed as he regained his balance.

"Hayate, sit." Immediately the puppy sat down next to one of Ed's legs. "Sorry, Edward. I guess he's got a lot of pent-up energy after spending the day in here."

"Don't worry about it. I don't know why but sometimes Den pounces on me too when I go to Resembool."

"Den? Is that the dog the Rockbells' have?"

"Yes." Al replied. "Although now that I remember, I don't think Den exactly gave you and the Colonel a gushing welcome." He added as he ran a hand over the back of his helmet.

"Well, we barged into his house too early. Besides, I can't say the Colonel hasn't earned it." Riza replied with a smile as she motioned for them to enter the apartment.

The Elrics entered and couldn't help but tour its interiors with a quick glance. There wasn't too much furniture but enough for Riza's needs. Everything looked extremely neat and clean, and there were only a couple of pictures with flower designs hanging on one wall. All in all, to Ed and Al, the place seemed to have a cozy and practical feel to it.

Riza approached Ed to ask for his coat. As soon as he took it off, she said. "Make yourselves comfortable. You're at home." And with that said she placed Ed's coat on the coat rack that rested near the entrance.

Ed and Al looked at each other and decided to sit on the living room couch.

As soon as Riza approached them, Ed said. "Well, Lieutenant, what can we help you with?"

"You don't think I'm going to put you to work on an empty stomach do you? I bet I didn't even give you time to eat before you came with me."

As if expecting such a comment, Ed's stomach made itself known with a slight growl that caused him to place his hands on it and a slight blush to appear on his cheeks.

"I told you you should have at least bought that lady a bun, brother." Al scolded Ed.

"Al, they were cream filled. I don't have to tell you what cream is made of do I?"

"But now you're going to inconvenience the Lieutenant."

Riza interjected. "Don't worry, Alphonse. In fact, if I'm honest, I'm glad Edward hasn't eaten yet." She flashed a smile at Ed. At the look of confusion on the boy's face, she added. "That means you'll be able to eat plenty."

Ed ran a hand over the back of his neck somewhat embarrassed. "That's not necessary, Lieutenant."

"I prepared the food especially for you." Ed looked at her in complete surprise. "I wish Alphonse could eat it too, but, since that's not possible at the moment, I can prepare it again when you get your bodies back. Well, that is as long as it is to your liking, Edward. I will heat and serve the food." At that moment Riza turned in the direction of her kitchen. "Remember you're at home."

They both thanked her shyly without fully understanding the situation. As soon as Riza disappeared behind the kitchen door, Ed walked over to Al and murmured. "Hey, Al, do you know what's going on here?"

Al was getting an idea of what it might be but opted to feign ignorance. "I don't know, brother."

At that moment Black Hayate approached them and began sniffing them and wagging his tail, a clear sign that he wanted to play.

After a few minutes, while heating up the food, Riza could hear Ed and Al's laughter and Black Hayate's playful barking, which brought a smile to her face and a warmth to her insides. A couple of minutes later she began serving two plates of stew and then placing them on a tray to carry them into the dining room.

Because there was no wall dividing the dining room from the living room, as she left the kitchen Riza quickly met the curious gaze of Ed, who was sitting on the floor along with Al.

"Is that stew?"

Riza nodded with a smile on her face. "I hope you like it."

"Really?" Ed quickly picked himself up off the floor and his gaze lit up.

"Yes. I couldn't help but be curious and asked Alphonse what you were looking for yesterday."

Ed ran a hand over the back of his neck. " Geez, you shouldn't have bothered, Lieutenant."

"It was no bother at all. I just hope it turned out all right. It's been several years since I've prepared it." Seeing Ed begin to approach he added. "But first you have to wash your hands. The bathroom is that way."

Ed nodded and went in the direction indicated, followed by Al, who always made a point of keeping his gloves clean.

Before long the three of them were seated at the table. Riza and Ed with a steaming plate of stew in front of them and Al bending down occasionally to pet Black Hayate's head or to toss him the ball he continually brought him.

Involuntarily, Riza just sat there watching Ed waiting for him to take the first bite. She didn't know why, but she really wanted to see the look on his face. Would he like it? Would it be okay? Had I added too much milk?

Concentrating on the plate in front of him, Ed took a spoonful of the stew, blew on it a couple of times to cool it a bit and then popped it into his mouth. The sensation of that first bite was incredible. It was delicious. It was very different from any other stew he had tasted in the city. It certainly didn't resemble the seasoning her mom had (not even Granny Pinako could match it), but there was something special about that first bite. The spices and vegetables were a little different from what he was used to in Resembool, but he could feel the dedication and care with which it had been prepared and this just made it all the more enjoyable.

Smiling hugely, Ed exclaimed. "It's delicious!"

After his words and expression, Riza let out the air she hadn't realized she had been holding. "Really?"

Ed kept smiling as he took another bite without bothering to let it cool a bit. "Yes, it's definitely the best stew I've tasted in the city, thank you, Lieutenant!"

Riza found herself infected by his smile. "You're welcome, Edward. I'm so glad you liked it." With that said, Riza picked up her own spoon and began to eat. In her opinion, when she tasted it while she was preparing it, it was a regular stew, but eating it in the company of the Elrics while watching Edward enjoy his first few bites so much, definitely gave her the feeling that it was also the best stew she had ever tasted in her life.

Riza continued to eat throwing loving smiles at Edward occasionally. After their first few bites, he had begun to excitedly describe to Al as best he could the flavors, textures and vegetables he noticed in the stew, a habit Riza had detected Edward performed whenever he tried any new food so as not to put Al off.

To her delight and pleasure, a few minutes later Ed left her plate completely clean. At this, she asked him. "Would you like some more, Edward?"

"May I?"

"Sure." Riza took Edward's plate and a few seconds later returned with a new serving.

The rest of the meal passed with occasional chatter between Riza, Ed and Al until the plates were empty.

Once he was satisfied, Ed exclaimed cheerfully. "That was delicious."

"It's been a while since I've seen you eat with such gusto, brother. Probably since the last time we were in Resembool."

Ed scratched his cheek somewhat sheepishly. "Well, it's just that you don't always find food as good as this around here."

At the brothers' comments and Ed's huge smile, Riza felt an inexplicable joy fill her insides. She had always liked to support others in any way she could, but the gleam in Ed's eye now made her feel completely pleased with herself.

Trying not to get too lost in her thoughts, she started to get up with the intention of picking up the dishes but Ed and Al were quicker.

"We got this, Lieutenant." Al said.

"Yeah, it's the least I can do after the meal you prepared for me. Though also don't think I've forgotten, as soon as we're done with this we'll help you with the repairs you told us to." Ed added as he grabbed the dishes.

"I don't really have anything that needs repairing." Confessed Riza. "It was simply an excuse to get you to come here so I could surprise you with the stew."

Ed looked surprised at her words. "But, Lieutenant, it wasn't necessary for you to do all this. I'm nothing more than inconveniencing you."

"Nothing of the sort, Edward." Riza replied with a smile. "Believe me I really enjoyed having you with me today. You are both good boys and were very well deserving of a break like this and believe me I will be very happy to host you whenever you want." She turned to look at Al. "Besides from Edward's reaction, I think the stew is more than approved for you to try when you get your body back."

Al ran a hand over the back of his helmet. "Would you really make it for me again, Lieutenant?"

"Of course. If you really like it I can prepare it whenever you want. I bet with practice I'll be able to improve it."

Ed smiled. "To me it's perfect just the way it is. It's got a special touch."

The sincerity in Ed's eyes made Riza immensely happy that she had made the decision to invite them over for a meal at her house.

"I'm sure the Lieutenant prepared it with an extra dose of milk." Al joked.

Ed's eyes widened immensely at the very thought. "It's not like that, is it, Lieutenant?" He asked extremely concerned. For her part, Riza was silent for a few seconds, amused by Edward's overreaction, who took that silence as confirmation. "Al, little brother, take my hand. Maybe this will be the end of me."

Al laughed lightly. "Come on, brother, don't be an exaggerator. Milk is good for you."

Riza couldn't help herself and let out a light laugh, something that surprised the Elrics. They knew that she was a very kind but at the same time very professional person, so it was a bit rare to see her laugh. She always directed smiles at them but laughter was a rare thing especially when they almost always saw her completely dedicated to her work.

Keeping her smile, Riza interjected. "Don't worry, Edward. I only put a little bit in. The recipe I followed only had a small amount of milk in it."

Ed sighed in relief. "That explains why it tasted so good." He turned to look at his brother. "See, Al? Milk consumption should be minimal and preferably nonexistent."

"Yeah, yeah. Whatever you say, brother." Relented Al, not giving the matter much thought. "Now this needs to be washed."

Taking the dishes with them, both brothers walked into the kitchen leaving Riza with a smile, as she made her way to the couch to pet Black Hayate.

Even though the main purpose of the visit was actually the stew, Riza felt very good in their company so she invited them over for tea to chat some more. So they spent a couple more hours together, Al sitting on the floor playing with Black Hayate while Ed and Riza chatted about whatever topic came to mind.

"Seriously, Lieutenant, I don't know how you put up with that cocky Colonel." Ed said.

"I recognize that he can be somewhat arrogant at times and that he's an expert at piling up paperwork, but he's a good person, Edward. I think my loyalty is in the right place. Besides, even if you don't want to accept it, I'm sure you appreciate him."

"Bah, nonsense, how can I appreciate someone who spends all his time annoying me?"

"You know that because of your position as a state alchemist you can change your command unit whenever you want, right?" Riza replied with her usual seriousness but with a tinge of sadness in the background.

Ed swallowed hard at the turn in the conversation. Since he had joined the military he had run into several military men of the same rank as Mustang and above who had tried to convince him to join their respective units but at no time did he take their offers seriously. "Uh... well yeah, but I don't think it's a good idea. If someone is going to use me to make themselves look good I'd rather it be Mustang. Besides, surely that bastard won't stop bothering me even if I switch teams."

Riza smiled. If there was one thing she had learned over the past two years, it was that Edward wasn't very good at expressing his feelings, so in situations like this, Riza knew how to detect the hidden message, just as she had learned to do with Roy: Mustang may be a bastard but I appreciate him, besides I don't want to leave his unit. Roy and Edward couldn't be in the same room without arguing, but she knew that they had both developed a great appreciation and respect for each other.

Raising her gaze to the clock resting in front of the couch Ed was on he exclaimed. " Damn it! It's almost 10. Sorry we're taking up so much of your time when you have to go to work tomorrow."

"It's no bother at all. What's more, I had a very pleasant time." Riza replied kindly.

"So did we." Al said as he sat up. "Thank you very much for your hospitality, Lieutenant.

"Yes, thank you very much." Replied Ed with a smile before heading over to the coat rack to pick up his coat and put it on.

"Are you sure about returning to the dorms at this hour? If you like you can stay here."

Ed shrugged. "We'll be fine. The dorms aren't too far from here."

"All right, but you guys be careful, okay?"

Standing at attention and giving a mock military salute (Ed never did that even if Roy was his superior), Edward and Alphonse said their goodbyes and left Riza's apartment, leaving her feeling warm and happy to have shared that good time with them.

It had been too long since she had had that feeling, it even made her imagine that maybe that was what her own mother felt when she painstakingly prepared food for her father and her when Riza was little. It was also a similar feeling to what Riza had felt when, years later, she cooked with Roy when she lived at her father's house. At that time, she even dreamed that she would continue to experience that feeling of peace, warmth and joy next to Roy and the family they would form. Sighing, Riza sat down on the couch so she could pet her faithful furry friend.

I hope my son by now will be very happy and even have brothers or sisters to enjoy his childhood with. Hohenheim and especially his wife were very good people, I expect no less from them. Even if I have lost the opportunity to cook delicious meals for you, my boy, I am comforted that at least I can do so with such good children as the Elrics. I hope you have as nice friends as this pair of brothers.

After thinking about her son and reliving her afternoon with the Elrics, Riza set out to take a bath to get ready for bed. That night she would surely get a good night's rest without nightmares haunting her.

From that day on, Riza started a new tradition in the office. Sometimes it was hard to keep track of the Elrics but whenever she was certain that the brothers would visit the office to deliver some report from Edward, she would bring a couple of servings of stew in a container.

The first day she did so, the curious looks from her colleagues were not long in coming (especially Breda's when his nose confirmed that it was food), but no one dared to ask her about the package she had brought with her, and she diligently tried to ignore them as she went about her work for the day. A few hours later, when the Elrics arrived at the office and after the classic discussion with the colonel, Riza handed the container to Ed initially earning a look of confusion that was quickly replaced by a big smile as a sign of thanks. And just to see that smile again, she continued her little tradition whenever the Elrics unpredictable schedule allowed.

Most of the time, Ed preferred to enjoy the meal in the privacy of his bedroom with Al's company as whenever he ate Riza's stew, he couldn't help but smile and remember the moments both boys enjoyed in their childhood at their mother's side.

"How I would love to enjoy that stew with you, brother." Al said longingly, as Ed ate.

Ed smiled nostalgically. "You will, you'll see. When you least expect it we'll have your body back. Besides, remember the Lieutenant promised to do more when we do."

Al nodded. "And in your opinion, does it have the same taste as the one Mom used to cook?"

Ed was thoughtful for a moment, trying to figure out the best way to describe it to his brother. "It's very tasty, but it doesn't have the same flavor as Mom's. However, it has a spice to it that strangely reminds me of her. It's like I feel her close."

"Maybe you feel that because the Lieutenant is a very kind woman, like our mother was. So I don't doubt in the least that she would convey that through her food." Al said in a very cheerful tone which denoted that, even though he didn't have her body, he would be smiling. Ed nodded, as he ate his last bite. "I wonder why she hasn't married yet. She's a young woman but I'm surprised someone as nice and attractive as she is is still single." Al added.

Ed folded his arms. "I've wondered that myself. She's a very pretty woman and most of all she has a big heart. Maybe the men back East are so blind that they haven't noticed her or maybe they're afraid of her because of her skill with guns."

"Or maybe the Lieutenant works too much and doesn't have time to have a relationship."

"Yes, you're probably right, and all because of the bastard Colonel who doesn't do his paperwork. He just loves to exploit his people." Ed grumbled. "As far as I know, no one in the unit is married. Falman looks too serious, Breda doesn't have the kind of looks that would attract a lot of girls..."

"Brother." Al gently chided Ed.

"I'm just stating the facts, Al. Where did I leave off? Ah yes, Fuery still looks too young for marriage, Havoc is a failed womanizer because every now and then he gets batted or changed for the Colonel and that bastard, he's just like Havoc but instead of being dumped I'd bet he dumps them. I haven't seen him with the same woman more than a month."

"Brother, you shouldn't judge people let alone your superior." Al again scolded Ed.

"Come on, Al. You probably think the same thing that because of the exploitative Colonel no one is married." Ed said defensively.

Al made a sighing sound. "I rather think that military life must be very difficult for soldiers, because it's such an all-consuming job. That's why I recognize those people who can still work there and have a family."

"Yes, you're right. Although you have to admit that of all the members of the unit, the Colonel looks the least likely to be a family man like Lieutenant Colonel Hughes."

"Well maybe it's not his time yet, but maybe later." Al suggested.

"Nah, to me he's not cut out to be a husband much less a family man. On the other hand, I think the Lieutenant would do a fantastic job in that field."

"I agree with you about the Lieutenant being an excellent mother and wife because of the way she has treated us and how she treats others. Of the Colonel, maybe he wouldn't do as well as the Lieutenant but I get the impression that deep down he would make a good role with the right woman. You have to admit that, in his own way, he has procured and helped us."

Ed snorted. "Well, maybe he' s helped us a little."

"Brother." Al caught his eye.

"Whatever, Al. But I could bet that guy loves being single so he can go after chicks just like Havoc. Or rather, he gets his kicks out of taking Havoc's women." Ed said with an amused tone.

Al shook his head. "You're hopeless, brother."

Ed shrugged. "I'm just stating the obvious, Al." Ed stood up. "Okay, now let's get on with reading the books we brought from the library."
