Chapter 30. Central

- 10 months later -

It was a Saturday night in East City. Riza was concentrated in her kitchen preparing dinner while humming softly a melody she thought she had already forgotten, one that her mother always hummed when she was very little. For the first time in a long time she felt calm, peaceful and even truly happy. An emotion she thought she would never feel again since she had to make the decision to separate herself from her son and the love of her life. Incredibly, it was those same two people who had brought that joy and light back into her life.

When her dish was ready, she turned off the oven and her attention was focused on her faithful canine friend who suddenly ran out of the kitchen towards the front door, barking happily to greet the visitor who entered the apartment. Riza smiled knowing who had arrived and began to take a couple of plates out of her cupboard to start serving dinner. A few seconds later, she was not surprised to feel two strong arms hugging her from behind.

"Hello, love." Tenderly greeted Roy without releasing her as he deposited a kiss on her head.

She smiled at the feeling of security and affection that Roy conveyed with his embrace and his words. "Hi, honey."

Hearing the way Riza had addressed him, Roy couldn't help but widen the smile he already had. He took that moment to pull her tighter against him.

"Roy, you're going to cause me to drop the food." Riza said laughing lightly.

He laughed lightly and placed his chin on her shoulder, Riza turned her face and kissed Roy's lips tenderly before returning to her task. The black-haired man didn't pull away and began to inhale deeply the pleasant aroma that the food gave off. "Mmm smells great, what are we having for dinner today?"

"Can't you imagine?" Riza said in an amused tone.

Roy, without letting go of the blonde's embrace, moved a little closer to see the casserole. "Spinach quiche." He said cheerfully.

"Huh-huh, unless you wish something else."

The black-haired man immediately shook his head, as he stepped away from Riza to help her put the dishes on the table. "Not at all, this is more than perfect."

Riza couldn't help but crack a smile at seeing Roy so animated. They took a seat and began to enjoy their dinner accompanied by a red wine Roy had brought. Her favorite.

"This is delicious, I haven't had a good spinach quiche in ages." Roy said in a cheerful tone.

"And here I thought I was going to have to eat it alone with Hayate because you didn't arrive." Riza said jokingly, as Roy tensed slightly.

"Do you really think I would miss this exquisite dinner and especially this unbeatable company?"

"You're a flatterer."

"No, I'm only telling the truth. Regarding my tardiness, I was running a bit late and besides there were a lot of people along the way who might have suspected something if they saw me heading this way. So I had to change my original route."

Hearing the explanation, Riza couldn't help but worry, it was the first time they had agreed to have a 'date' at her house after many discussions about whether or not they should do it, but almost losing each other ended up tipping the balance in favor of trying to resume their romantic relationship in secret.

Roy took Riza's hand that was on the table and caressed it. "Don't worry, no one saw me and I have a perfect alibi." He smiled confidently.

She raised an eyebrow. "May I know what it is?"

"I made sure I was seen going into a hotel with a lady and before you think wrong, she's one of Madame's girls who is living here in the East, so she's reliable."

She smiled slightly before continuing with her dinner.

"It's a good tactic, don't you think? It will give me a chance to stay all night and even tomorrow if you wish." He proposed as he resumed his dinner.

"I didn't know dating involved the suitor staying overnight with the girl."

He raised an eyebrow. "I think I'm much more than just a suitor at this point." He said slightly indignant.

"If I remember correctly it's the first date, isn't it?"

Roy's mouth dropped open in mild surprise. "Hey, I thought we wouldn't be starting from scratch, not after all we've been through together. Riza, we have a son together."

A mischievous gleam crossed her auburn gaze. "True, you're right, my apologies. At this point there's nothing strange about you spending the night here. When it's bedtime I'll get some extra sheets and a pillow for you to settle on the couch, while Black Hayate and I stay in the room."

"Riza!" Roy pouted. "How could you possibly even consider leaving me on the couch while with Hayate you don't even think about it?"

"Hayate always sleeps with me in the room."

Roy folded his arms, frowning. "I can't believe a dog has more privileges than me."

Riza began to laugh lightly at the spectacle Roy was putting on, he looked like a toddler throwing a tantrum. In the last few years she had only had glimpses of that part of Roy whereas, when they both lived at her father's house, she got to see that part of him more often and without interruption.

"I don't see the humor in a dog having more privileges than me." He replied indignantly as he saw Riza laugh.

"Well, maybe I can reconsider." She said amused.

Seeing that she was genuinely cheerful and having fun at his expense, he smiled and said before continuing with his dinner. "I hope so."

Dinner continued quietly, chatting about various topics, from how Ishval's project was going with Scar and Major Miles working directly over there to trivial things they had done in their limited free time since returning to the East. Obviously, it did not pass over the mention of Edward and Alphonse.

When they finished dinner, Roy took care of the dishes and they continued their evening in her small living room, sitting next to each other. He hugging Riza while she leaned against him to enjoy their closeness.

"When do you think Ed will confess his feelings to Winry?" Roy asked.

Riza smiled. They both knew how hopelessly in love their boy had been with his childhood friend for some time now, but because of the way he was and his goal of getting Al's body back that declaration had been put off too long for their liking.

"I don't know, he's kind of shy about talking about his feelings. Besides, I think maybe he's afraid she doesn't feel the same way about him and it will fracture the friendship they have."

"Are you kidding? It's more than obvious that Winry feels the same way about him. I can't believe that son of mine is so clueless."

"There's no need to pressure him. Everything will come in time, besides you were about his age when you confessed your feelings to me."

He snorted. "It's different, love." She raised an eyebrow and before she could protest, he continued. "He and Miss Rockbell have known each other since they were babies, whereas you and I met later. Besides, they don't have the age difference that we do, because believe me if we were the same age it wouldn't have taken me that long to tell you how I felt about you."

Riza softened her gaze and features as she saw the love with which he looked at her. She leaned closer and kissed his cheek. "Would you really have risked my father's wrath earlier?" She asked amused.

He laughed lightly. "That would have only happened if he had found us out and even if he had, it would have been totally worth it. Well though I must admit there is a small part of me that has always believed that your father always knew what was going on between us and maybe that's why he asked me to take care of you on his deathbed."

She sighed. "Yes, I've come to think so too."

Trying not to sadden Riza with her father's death and his exhaustive research into fire alchemy, Roy decided not to delve into that topic. "Well, getting back to Ed, I just hope that boy gets up the courage to take that step soon."

"I do hope that the two of them at some point come clean with their feelings and can enjoy a nice courtship. They're at that age where they should meet people and enjoy their youth."

"Maybe with a little luck and, as long as that brat doesn't screw up, Miss Rockbell could be his soul mate."

"I'd like that, I like Winry a lot plus, like you, I also get the impression that she has feelings for Edward too. But the most important thing is for them both to be happy, they deserve it, although maybe it's a little early to think of them being meant for each other, they're still too young."

Roy snorted. "Honey, I was about their age when I discovered you were my soul mate and to this day you haven't gotten rid of me."

She smiled and gently caressed one cheek of his. "True, you're absolutely right. We were very young when we fell in love and realized we were soul mates." She smiled and began to lean in to catch his lips when at that moment the phone began to ring, causing them to stop mere inches apart.

"Let it ring." Roy whispered brushing his lips against the blonde's.

"I won't be long, it might be something important." She said as she started to move away from him so she could answer the phone that sat on the small table next to the couch they were sitting on.

"Riza, who could be calling you at this hour and on a Saturday? Oh, I already know, it's Catalina for sure. I swear I'm going to kill that woman for interrupting." He grumbled lightly.

She laughed lightly. "It will only take a second." She said before giving him a light kiss on the lips then hugging one of his arms to subsequently grab the phone handset with her free hand.

"Hello?"

"Hi mom, how are you?"

At the greeting, Riza softened her features even more while her eyes gave off a great joy. "Hello, Edward. How nice to greet you, son. I'm feeling very well, how are you and the others?"

Hearing his son's name, Roy couldn't help but smile and forget the annoyance the interruption had caused him. In the meantime he moved closer towards Riza to try to listen in on the conversation.

"Very well, thank you. Al is doing very well with his rehab and the automail business is going like gangbusters."

"I'm very glad to hear that."

"And how's my dad?"

Roy's smile widened even more. He never thought hearing Ed refer to him that way would fill him with such joy. Riza was also overjoyed to see the cheerful, lively countenance that radiated from Roy after he managed to hear his son's words.

Before Riza could respond, Roy picked up the phone to place it in between both of their ears so that they could both talk to their son. "I'm feeling great, thanks for asking."

"Uh... what are you doing there, old man?" the blond replied in surprise.

"Hey, a moment ago you referred to me properly and now you're back to rudeness. Remember who you're talking to, brat." The black-haired man grumbled.

"Who are you calling a brat? Besides, these are no hours to be in a lady's apartment."

"It's also not hours to be on the phone, don't you know you're interrupting adult things?"

Ed stammered before answering. "What are you talking about, you bastard?!"

"Roy! Edward! That's enough!" Riza chided lightly as she saw that their peaceful conversation was starting to spiral out of control.

"Sorry." Said Roy and Edward in unison.

Riza, sighed. "Edward, Roy and I decided to give ourselves a chance to resume our relationship and today is our first date. And before you get the wrong ideas thanks to your father..." She gave Roy a hard look before continuing. "We had dinner and were chatting when you called."

Roy folded his arms slightly annoyed. The conversation was close to over as I was about to kiss you madly, love.

"Oh... I'm sorry for thinking other things but he's to blame for going around saying things that can be misinterpreted."

"Of course not! It's your fault for having a perverted mind."

"Me? Rather that's you. Just make sure you marry my mom before I get word that I have any brothers or sisters on the way."

"What?!"

"Boys!" The blonde interjected again. I was definitely right when I said I would have to take care of 2 kids instead of just my son. "Edward, let's forget the nonsense Roy told you and the nonsense you're thinking. We're just having a quiet home date and we're taking advantage of this schedule to make it harder to be tracked."

"I understand, I'm sorry." Ed replied knowing the situation Roy and Riza found themselves in by staying in the military.

"Don't worry, son." Riza said gently. "Was there something you wanted to talk to me about?" She asked curiously as she always enjoyed the anecdotes Edward shared with her when he called.

"Oh, right I had forgotten." The blond paused before continuing. "Well... uh... he's there listening and I don't know if I want him to."

"Why can your mother hear you and I can't? Have you forgotten who the hell I am?" The black-haired man replied indignantly and hurt.

Ed sensed that beneath Roy's indignant tone, there was pain. He sighed. He definitely wasn't used to dealing with older male figures, but now that he had him he should at least try to make an effort to strengthen that bond with his father, just as Al and Winry had recommended.

"I'm sorry, it's not that I don't want you to know. It's just that I'm not used to asking a man for advice."

Roy understood what his son was referring to. He had to be patient but still couldn't help but feel guilty for not being able to be with his son sooner. Riza noticed his engrossment and took one of his hands to give it a light squeeze which the black-haired man reciprocated accompanied by a smile.

"It's all right, son. If you feel more comfortable I'll leave you alone with your mother. Please take care of yourself and say hello to everyone."

"Don't go, dad... maybe it's good to have the advice of both of you." Replied the boy.

"Don't force yourself, Ed, I understand this is all still new and weird for you."

"I'm not forcing myself, it just takes some getting used to, that's all."

Roy cracked a slight smile at his son's words. "Fine, but the moment you feel uncomfortable, let me know."

"Okay. I wanted to ask for your advice regarding... dating."

"Dating?" Roy and Riza asked in unison.

"Uh-huh... mmm you see... Win and I uh..."

"You finally confessed your feelings to her, didn't you?" Roy asked.

"Huh? How come you know?"

"Edward, it was obvious to all of us that you had feelings for Winry and we believed that sooner or later one of you would end up talking about your feelings for each other." Riza replied calmly.

Ed was surprised. Wow, that explains why that bastard Bradley took her hostage. Am I really that obvious? "Well... you were right when you asked me and well I decided to tell her how I feel. Turns out she feels the same way about me and has agreed to be my girlfriend." He replied with an obvious tone of joy in his voice.

Both parents smiled as their guesses proved true. "We are very glad, Edward. Please remember to be respectful and kind to Winry." Riza said with a smile as she noticed her son's joy.

"Also don't forget to be a gentleman to her and above all don't forget our talk from years ago." Roy added at the end with an amused tone.

Even though they couldn't see the boy, they were both sure he was totally flushed and they could hear on the other end of the line his nervousness.

"Only you come up with such things. Really the pervert is you. Mom, what the hell did you see in him?"

Riza laughed lightly and Roy frowned.

"Stop that nonsense, I'm not a pervert. Besides I remind you that if it hadn't been for that love surrender I wouldn't be here chatting with you."

"Damn, it's seriously getting harder to annoy you." Grumbled the blond.

"But tell us, Edward, what advice do you need?" Riza gently interjected trying to keep those two from starting another argument.

"Ah, yes. You see... I want to ask Win out on a date, but I really have no idea what that's all about and I want her to really enjoy it."

The two parents couldn't help but smile at Ed's statement as they looked into each other's eyes. They were glad that their son was finally beginning to enjoy the experiences that befitted his age after going through so many hardships. However, they couldn't help but feel a painful pang as they realized how much they had missed from their son's life. Therefore, they were not going to waste this new opportunity that was presented to them to be a part of it.

"Edward, I think it's a wonderful idea that you are planning a date with her. As you may know from our situation we don't have much experience in dating-" Riza began before being interrupted by her son.

"Don't tell me my idiot father got you pregnant without even taking you on one?" Ed asked, slightly annoyed.

"Hey, Ed, remember I'm listening to you and you owe me respect." Roy spat. "And for your information, what your mother is referring to is that back in the day, before you were born, we had very little opportunity to date." Roy sighed, as he recalled those old days. "Since that time our relationship was secret, we didn't know how Riza's father would take it as he was a complicated man, so to avoid him kicking me out and forbidding me to see his daughter again, we decided to do it that way." He paused slightly before continuing. "From my personal experience, it doesn't matter the place but rather the person you date." He looked Riza in the eyes tenderly as he smiled. "I had my best dates with the girl who stole my heart in an old moonlit attic, in the back of a falling apart house or any other corner that gave us privacy. Now, I have the opportunity to resume those dates in an apartment with the same girl. As much as I would love to take her to a luxurious place as she deserves, I still really enjoy these moments for the simple fact of spending time with the one I love."

Riza smiled broadly at Roy's words, reached over and kissed his cheek before taking the word. "Your father is absolutely right, it's not the place that matters but the company. I too have held those dates dear to my heart because they have been with the only person who has been able to steal my heart."

"Wow... you have left me speechless. I was really already considering calling my old man to account." Ed joked.

"How you insist on calling me 'old man'." Roy complained, making Riza and Ed laugh. "I shouldn't help you for calling me names, kid, but I'll still give you a couple of tips. One, since you do have the ability to carry on a normal, healthy relationship, and obviously with Mrs. Rockbell's permission, you could invite Winry to a beautiful, quiet place that you both enjoy. It could be a park, a restaurant or just a picnic by the lake or under the shade of a nice tree."

"I like the sound of that. Maybe you're not useless after all."

"Keep going down that road, my dear son, and I won't be helping you anymore."

"Okay, I'll calm down. What's the second tip?"

At the question, Roy's eyes sparkled with mischief, a gesture that did not go unnoticed by Riza. What are you up to, Roy?

"Please don't forget that you should always respect and take care of your girlfriend. I repeat, don't forget our talk from years ago, I wouldn't want to become a grandfather being so young, you know?"

"What?! H-how could you think of that?! Geez... I uh..."

Her son's nervousness elicited a laugh from Roy, Riza only lightly smacked him on his arm, but she also couldn't help but smile in amusement at Ed's state.

"Seriously, Mom, how did a girl as pretty and smart as you fall in love with a perverted idiot like him?" Ed rebutted as he regained his composure.

Riza laughed lightly. "Sometimes I wonder that too, son." She replied in a neutral tone, causing Roy's laughter to immediately evaporate and he looked dumbfounded at Riza. She couldn't resist the sight of him any longer and started laughing again, pulling the black-haired man close to give him a chaste kiss on the lips. "I'm joking, dear. Of course I know why I fell in love with you." The words made Roy resume his smile and the fake anger disappear.

"No kidding, Edward, Roy's right. Never stop respecting Winry. The two of you are at a stage where you are discovering a lot of things and maybe what Roy mentioned to you in the talk you had years ago will turn into something very tempting. Ideally, when you decide to start being intimate, it should be when you are married, but sometimes things don't happen that way. So make sure you are both ready and don't rush things, everything will happen in its own time. In the meantime leisurely enjoy every stage of your relationship and each other's company." Riza spoke in a sweet and calm voice.

"Uh... okay, thank you both for the advice. But regarding the last topic, I think it's still a long way off and it's not something I'm really interested in right now, so I think there's nothing to worry about."

"That's what we used to say and look at us now, you're the product of that." Roy said in a joking tone.

Riza couldn't see Edward, but she was sure he would probably be blushing.

"Just don't forget to be yourself, respect Winry and have lots of fun, son."

"Thanks, Mom."

Roy smiled as he watched Riza's expression turn into a relaxed, blissful one whenever the boy called her 'mom'. He couldn't blame her, he did the exact same thing on the occasions when Ed gave her the joy of calling him 'dad'.

"I'll see if I can arrange the date stuff these days. If not I'll take advantage and have a date with Winry at Central. Al needs some nutritional supplements that are hard to get around here, so I plan to go get them myself." Ed said.

"If you want I can ask Gracia to send them to you." Roy suggested. "I'm sure she won't mind."

"Thanks, but I think the trip to Central will do me good. Besides I want to take the opportunity to go get some books and besides Winry wants to come with me because she wants to buy some clothes and automail stuff."

"That sounds like it's going to be a long day of shopping, my son." Roy joked and Riza lightly slapped him on his arm.

"Probably." Ed sighed.

"Why do you guys say that? Besides, you and I have hardly ever gone shopping together." Riza claimed to Roy.

The black-haired man began to chuckle. "Have you forgotten when I used to accompany you to town when I lived with you and your father?"

"But it was to buy groceries and if we were late, it was because you took us out of our way to find a safe place to kiss me."

"Hey, I don't think I want to know those details." Ed interjected.

"We're sorry, Edward, but you know how your father is. Getting back to your conversation, when are you going to Central?"

"Hmmm I guess about two weeks from now."

"If it is in 2 weeks, perhaps we can arrange to meet. The Führer is requesting the presence of the generals in charge of the 5 commands in the country, so we'll be in Central around that time." Riza said in a cheerful tone as she could not contain her excitement at the prospect of seeing her son again in a few days.

"Right, I had completely forgotten about it. Thank you for the reminder, my dear." Roy said before kissing his beloved's forehead.

"You are hopeless, if it wasn't for my mother I don't know where you would be."

"I agree with you there, Edward." Riza confirmed.

Roy frowned jokingly for only a few seconds as inside he couldn't help but agree with them.

"Uh... so I'll see you at Central in 2 weeks?" asked Ed.

"Only if you agree, son." Riza replied.

"Sure! I'll call you guys when the date gets closer to set the place. I plan to stay for a week to take advantage and visit some friends and places."

"Perfect, Edward." Riza said with a huge smile on her face at the thought of seeing her son soon.

"Well, I have to go. Thank you both for listening to me."

"Anytime, son. We'll always be there for you. Take care of yourself." Riza said in a warm voice.

"Thank you. You too. See you soon."

"See you soon." Both parents uttered in unison.

Hanging up the phone, Riza leaned against Roy's shoulder and he pulled her to him to hug her tightly.

"You were happy to get Ed's call, weren't you?" asked Roy.

She nodded. "Yes, just like you were. It made you so happy that you forgot the anger you felt when you got interrupted." The blonde joked.

"Well, I'll pass it along for this one as long as we can resume our make out session." Roy said suggestively.

Riza laughed and took his face in her hands to pull him closer to her and kiss him tenderly, a gesture that was fully reciprocated by the black-haired man.

After several minutes of remaining embraced and kissing each other, Riza said. "I think it's time for bed, it's been an exhausting week and I think we could use the rest."

Roy nodded and reluctantly let go of Riza, who stood up to go into her room as he stood and arranged the books they had left in the living room. A couple of minutes later, Riza reappeared in her pajamas, with a pillow and a sheet she was leaving on the couch to Roy's surprise.

"You weren't serious, were you?" He asked incredulously.

She feigned fake annoyance. "I'm always serious, you of all people know that."

He was left open-mouthed.

"Come on, Hayate, time for bed." Riza said.

Roy couldn't believe it. He grabbed her arm and turned her towards him. "Riza, you can't leave me sleeping here. For God's sake, we have a child, there's nothing wrong with us sleeping together, I need to hold you, to have you close to me, please." He concluded by putting on his best puppy dog eyes.

Riza smiled. She really didn't plan to let him sleep on the couch, she just wanted to tease him for a while to have fun at his expense, which she had accomplished. She released her grip and took his hand to lead them to her room.

"I was just kidding, come on, put on your pajamas and let's get some rest."

Roy smiled immediately. "What if I told you I still only sleep in my underwear?"

Riza playfully slapped his chest. "Come on, get changed."

He decided to obey for this one and went into the bathroom to change into a pair of shorts he wore for pajamas. He had brought a small suitcase with his clothes and just as he was pulling out his pajamas, he remembered that he was carrying the engagement ring he had bought her so many years ago. For a long time he had forgotten about it until, during Ed's stay at his apartment, it had appeared as Roy was beginning to pack to go back East. At that time, he had offered it to Ed to give to Winry later when they were ready, but the boy had talked some sense into him by telling him that the ring belonged to his mother and no one else. Ed told him to cut the bullshit as he hoped he would soon be fortunate enough to see Riza happily married.

His son was right, he knew they wouldn't be able to go public with their relationship any time soon, but maybe with a little luck, when he least expected it that opportunity might present itself and he would certainly take it. But, while that opportunity presented itself, there would be nothing wrong with him giving her the ring as a symbol of their promise, besides it had been in storage for too many years already. He knew she could not wear it publicly, but he had no doubt that she would keep and treasure it as she had done all these years with the charm he had given her. With that resolution in mind, he changed and picked up the box with the ring to head for the bedroom.

As he entered the room, he smiled as he found Riza sitting on her bed, leaning against the headboard reading a book as she awaited his return. She, sensing his gaze, looked away from the book to find the black-haired man with his bare torso, wearing only shorts.

"What about your pajamas?" Riza asked.

"These are my pajamas." Roy replied as he pointed to the shorts.

Riza shook her head. "You're hopeless."

Roy laughed as he walked over to the side of her bed, to kneel beside her. "Don't deny it, you like the view." He smiled smugly.

"Why are you so sure of that?" She replied in a voice of mock indifference. Of course she had no complaints about the view in front of her, but she wasn't going to indulge Roy so easily.

Noticing her indifference, Roy pouted. "Why are you so hard to please?"

Riza smiled at Roy's childish behavior as she felt privileged to know those sides of the black-haired man. She closed her book and placed it on the nightstand beside her. She swiveled around to place her legs on the edge of the bed so she could sit facing him. Once seated she brought one of her hands to caress one of Roy's cheeks and kissed him on the forehead, an action that made the black-haired man change his expression to one full of joy.

Roy took one of her hands and brought it to his lips to deposit a tender kiss on her knuckles and then looked into her eyes. "Riza, I know that during our stay at the hospital we talked a little about our relationship." Roy began.

"Yes, I remember. Don't forget that I promised to wait for you and stay by your side for the betterment of Amestris."

He looked at her lovingly. He still didn't understand what he had done to have such a wonderful woman like her by his side. "Despite those promises we made, I want to give you something that belongs to you, that I've had with me for a long time and that I hadn't dared to give you until Ed made me see that I should."

Riza raised a confused and expectant eyebrow. What could Roy have that was hers? It was then that Roy pulled from the pocket of his shorts a velvety box and opened it to show her a beautiful platinum ring with a gorgeous pattern and a small diamond in it. It was not showy. It was simple but extremely beautiful and practical. Just the way she liked it.

"Roy..." She said stunned, as she put a hand to her mouth in surprise.

"Riza, this ring has been with me since after the war. I had had it made exclusively for you shortly before that damned order forced us to go to the battlefield. My intention was to get you back and immediately propose to you upon my return from the war. Just as I described it to you in my last letter." Roy paused slightly. "Unfortunately, I didn't count on all the events that would happen back then... so I only kept this ring and there was a time, when we had trust issues, when I thought I could never give it to you." Roy closed his eyes for a moment trying to block out the bad memories of those times and then smiled slightly. "But now a lot has changed since then. Despite the difficulties we are still together, we got our son back and we have promised to improve the country by joining forces. At the moment I will not be able to give you the ceremony you deserve, but this is the symbol of my promise that as soon as it is possible for us, I will do it. It is also my promise of my eternal love and fidelity to you. Riza, my best friend, my unconditional companion, my girlfriend, my first and only love and the mother of my only son... Will you do me the great honor of being my wife? Will you follow me on this path?"

Riza could not believe what she was experiencing at that moment. She didn't need any of that to know the genuineness of Roy's feelings for her. But there he was, as always surprising her in the best of ways and reaffirming his love for her. Without realizing it, a couple of tears began to overflow down her cheeks and her arms threw themselves around his neck, hugging him tightly. He, without hesitation, returned the gesture, pulling her tightly into his arms.

"Oh, Roy... you know perfectly well that I don't need any of that to know how you feel about me. Besides, you know you don't have to ask. I told you long ago that I'd follow you to hell itself." Riza said between sobs of joy.

"I know, but you deserve everything and I want to give it to you. Someday I will be able to give you everything I told you and more. So... that's a yes?"

She laughed as she nodded. "Of course, Roy. I accept to be your wife."

"Thank you, Riza, thank you." Roy hugged her tightly as a couple of tears of joy descended down his cheeks.

Soon after, they parted and Roy gently placed the ring on. He began to wipe away Riza's tears with his thumbs, an act that was mimicked by Riza with his own and then took his face in her hands and kissed him tenderly on the lips.

"I look forward to the day when I can wear this ring in public because it will mean that we can finally be together without fear of being found out."

"That's what I'm looking forward to most too." Roy said before kissing her again.

The two smiled and hugged one more time before they stood up and lay on their sides on the bed looking at each other. She began to stroke his cheek gently.

"So how was that about Edward encouraging you to give me the ring?"

"When he helped me start packing up my Central stuff, during the time he was with me, he found it and started asking me questions. At first I told him that if he wanted it, he could take it and give it to his future girlfriend. But, as usual, he started nagging me about how I could be such an idiot and not give it to you, given that that ring belonged to you and that it would also be the perfect excuse for me to promise you that one day I was going to marry you like you so deserve." He paused to inhale deeply to fill himself with Riza's essence before smiling and continuing. "You don't know how glad I am that Ed talked me into it, because now I have one more motivation to rush to the top."

Riza laughed and snuggled against Roy's chest. "I love you, Roy."

He pulled her as close to him as he could. "I love you too, Riza, with all my being."

Ed and Winry had decided to travel to Central a couple of days earlier than Ed had mentioned to his parents to take advantage of their stay, as they wanted to do several things and, although they didn't say it, they both wanted to take the opportunity to spend time alone to explore the city as a couple now that they had begun their courtship.

As soon as they left the train station in Central, they checked into the hotel that the Elrics usually visited on their past trips to drop off their luggage and went out to eat at one of the few restaurants that the blond had liked in the entire city.

"So the General and the Captain won't be here for another 2 days?" Winry asked as they waited for their food. By her and Ed's agreement, they decided to keep calling his parents by their military ranks to avoid jeopardizing their secret.

"That's right, apparently they have a lot of work to do in the East with running the provinces but especially with the joint work they are doing with Major Miles in Ishval. If it weren't for the Führer summoning them, they would probably prefer not to move so as not to fall behind."

"I have no doubt they will do a great job over there. That will help them to have a good relation with the current Führer, so it will be easier and faster for him to go about authorizing the required help for Ishval."

The blond nodded. "Besides, that old Grumman owes Mustang for practically ceding him the throne." Ed said quietly so only Winry could hear him.

"Yeah, you're right." Winry placed her elbows on the table and leaned her face into her palms as she smiled. "Even though it hasn't been long since we saw them, I'm looking forward to seeing them."

"Me too, maybe with any luck the Captain can treat us to some stew."

Winry widened her smile at the mention of Riza's stew. Now that Ed had already recognized Riza as his mother, Winry couldn't help but soften her features at the mention of her as she was glad for the happiness Roy, Riza and Ed were allowing themselves as they came to terms with their shared past.

"You're such a glutton, all you think about is eating." Said the blonde in a joking tone. "Besides, don't forget that they, like us, will be staying in a hotel, so I see it as highly unlikely."

Ed lowered his head in resignation. "Right, you're absolutely right."

"You could always visit them in East City." Winry suggested.

Ed raised his head and smiled, "You're right. It's just..." He scratched a cheek with a finger. "I still feel weird coming to them all of a sudden. I'm still adjusting."

Winry lowered her arms and reached out a hand to caress one of Ed's hands. "I know, but you're doing great. I'm so proud of you, you've acted so mature and most of all you're giving yourself a chance to be happy. Plus you're giving them the chance to know you and be by your side like they always wanted." Whispered the blonde in an affectionate tone.

He took her hand and squeezed it lightly. "Thank you, Win."

She smiled and they continued eating. Once they were finished, they paid the bill and left the establishment holding hands heading for the park to enjoy the city sunset. They sat down on a bench and Ed put his arm around Winry's shoulders to pull her closer to him, an occasion that Winry took the opportunity to settle her head on her boyfriend's shoulder, letting out a light laugh in the process.

"What's going on?" Ed asked in confusion as he tilted his head slightly trying to see Winry's face.

"I can't believe this is happening." She pulled away from his shoulder so she could see him freely as she smiled sweetly at him. "For a long time I thought you didn't see me as anything more than your friend and mechanic."

"Well..." Ed scratched his cheek with a finger as he averted his gaze slightly. "I had to be sure you felt the same way before I told you about my feelings. I didn't want to lose you."

"Oh, Ed." Winry brought a hand to his cheek where Ed's finger was, causing the boy to make contact with her gaze again. "You stole my heart a long time ago. You were always someone very special in my life so you're a fool if you really thought I'd walk away from you." She confessed feeling her cheeks begin to flush.

Ed smiled at her as he placed a hand over the one Winry had placed on her cheek. "I'm not a fool. The scientific part of me was keeping me from taking a step until I had solid proof."

Winry rolled her eyes. "And almost a year of daily cohabitation hadn't been enough for you." She said teasingly as she gently stroked Ed's cheek with her thumb. Now that Winry had resumed her stays in Rush Valley seasonally, Ed had accompanied her or gone to visit her so there really had been little time apart in the last year.

Ed wanted to protest but Winry stopped him by giving him a quick kiss on the lips. The surprise of the kiss caused Ed to blush making Winry giggle a little in turn.

"You're so adorable when you blush."

"Boys aren't adorable, Win." Ed grumbled even though he couldn't wipe away the smile Winry's kiss had caused him.

"No, only you." Winry said with a wide grin before settling back into Ed's shoulder.

"As long as you're the one to say it, I guess I can accept it, automail freak." Ed said before pressing a kiss to her forehead before lightly resting his head on hers.

Ed kept his smile and closed his eyes for a moment feeling an enormous calmness and joy. He didn't know what he had done to make someone like Winry notice him but he felt extremely lucky and, even though it had already been a couple of weeks, the memory of how their relationship had finally begun to venture into the territory of love was still etched in his mind.

Ed and Winry were lying on the grass at the back of the Rockbell home under the starry Resembool sky. Up until an hour ago Al and Den were also with them but the younger Elric had excused himself saying he was dying of sleep so he left taking Den with him. It struck Ed as odd that Al wanted to go to bed so early (the sky was just beginning to darken when he left) but then he realized it was a new attempt by his brother to encourage him to confess as it was becoming more and more frequent for the younger blond to leave them alone.

Thinking about the hints Al had sent him over the past few months about having to confess to Winry, Ed glanced at the blonde out of the corner of his eye, discovering that his friend had closed her eyes with a smile on her face as she hummed almost imperceptibly to a tune that the young man had become familiar with from the times he had heard it. He didn't know precisely what the name of the song was or if it was a casual creation of Winry's but he did know that lately the young woman hummed it when she was happy and relaxed.

Ed was feeling his heart begin to race as he couldn't quite shake off the thoughts regarding the confession he hadn't gotten up the courage to make, but he couldn't help the smile and the blush on his cheeks knowing that Winry continually felt that way when she was around him. So, knowing that Winry was taking her time humming, he decided to lie on his side so he could see her better as he sank into his thoughts.

All this time there have been several times when she blushes, stutters or gets nervous when we are alone. She always smiles when we're together and now I can't imagine going to the market without us ending up holding hands in some way or another. Thought the blond as memories of the two of them from the past few months came to his mind. Al is sure of it. Granny Pinako hasn't said anything but it seems like she's waiting for something to happen between us. So... I don't have to look for more proof? Is this for real? Can I really confess without risking ruining our friendship?

So absorbed was Ed in his thoughts that he didn't have time to react when Winry opened her eyes again and realized that he was staring at her. The blonde's cheeks began to flush as the young man's did but that didn't stop the sweet smile that appeared on her lips. "What's wrong, Ed?"

Ed gulped as he was discovered. "No, nothing."

"Really?" She asked in disbelief with a slightly mischievous smile. She turned onto her side so that she was face to face with the blond, letting out a small laugh as she noticed Ed's golden eyes widen a little more at the extreme closeness she had ended up eliciting. "You seem to be thinking something through."

The young man remained gazing intently into Winry's bright blue eyes, which looked like a couple more stars in the growing darkness around them. "Could be."

"Oh yeah?" she asked softly feeling her heart begin to race at the closeness and the hope that they were about to take the step she had long been waiting for, wishing in turn that her suspicions were true and that Ed also wanted it as much as she did. "How about you tell me what you're thinking about?" she asked with a little effort to keep her voice from giving away how nervous and excited she was feeling.

Ed was quiet for a few seconds as he watched her intently. Although this new kind of closeness between the two of them made him a little nervous it wasn't something he disliked. In fact it was quite the opposite, he was enjoying it. The two of them had shared a few hugs over the past few months but the blond was convinced that this time there was something more between them, something that had always been there but was now gaining even more strength.

"Win..." The blond murmured as he brought a slightly trembling hand up to the young woman's cheek.

"Yes, Ed?" Winry asked in an equally soft voice and without taking her gaze from the boy's golden orbs.

"I..." Ed caressed her cheek sweetly as he gulped continuously trying to find the right words to express his feelings. Having trouble deciding what words to use, the blond panicked a bit so he withdrew his hand from the girl's cheek.

What? Winry thought with disappointment. No! No! And no! I've been waiting for you but if you won't do it I will. With the determination her thoughts gave her, the blonde grabbed Ed's hand before he could fully lean it back against his side, returning it to the previous position, puzzling the young man for a moment.

"Win?"

With a look full of determination, Winry spoke in a soft but firm voice. "Ed, I have something to tell you. I've been waiting but I can't do it anymore. I have to say it at once, whether you like it or not." She inhaled deeply and smiled sweetly at him. "Ed, I lo-"

Before Winry could finish speaking she was interrupted by Ed's lips on hers. The gesture was surprising but the warmth and joy she felt at the touch of the young man's lips caused her to close her eyes almost immediately as she brought her free hand to the blond's neck.

The kiss was slow and somewhat awkward but with each subtle movement each made, they both practically felt themselves melting with love and joy. It was obvious that they were both inexperienced in the subject but that didn't stop them from pulling their bodies as close as possible as they made the kiss last as long as possible reluctant to let the other go. However, the lack of oxygen finally kicked in forcing them to end the kiss but, not wanting to break the contact completely, they both ended up leaning their foreheads against each other's. The two blondes remained with their eyes closed for a few seconds, savoring and recording every detail in their minds, until they opened them to be greeted by the blushing but smiling face of the other.

After a couple of seconds of getting lost in each other's gaze, Ed broke the silence. "I didn't know how to tell you."

Winry laughed. "And like the good Edward Elric you are, you preferred to let your actions speak for you."

Ed laughed as well. "Maybe." The blond squeezed a little tighter the arm that had gone around the young woman's waist during the previous kiss. "But words don't go amiss, do they?" He smiled as his golden eyes sparkled with joy and love. "I like you, Win. No, wait. It's not just that. I-I love you." Confessed the blond finally, unable to avoid a small stutter at the end. Even if he hadn't been in a relationship before he understood perfectly well the weight and meaning of 'I love you' so, even though he was completely sure of his feelings for his friend, he was afraid of scaring Winry with the weight of his words.

The little doubt that arose at the end for Ed, didn't last long since the blonde smiled at him in such a tender and special way that the blond felt as if his heart wanted to burst out of his chest.

"I love you too, Ed." Winry confessed as she began to stroke the hair that grew at the nape of the blond's neck. "That's what I wanted to tell you but you wouldn't let me finish." She concluded with a giggle.

Ed's grin widened, "I beat you to it."

"I was going to say it first so it doesn't count." She replied with a mischievous grin and seeing that the blond was going to rebut, shut him up with a small kiss.

"Good." The blond said unable to disguise how the new kiss had made him blush even more. "Let's say you win but..." He pulled his hand away from Winry's cheek and brought it up to the hand she had on the back of his neck to intertwine their fingers. "There's still something else to go." He cleared his throat then resumed his huge grin. "Winry, do you want to be my girlfriend?"

Winry tightened the grip the blond had initiated with her hands as she pulled him close to kiss him again and again. "Sure I do." She replied between kisses. "I love you."

Ed kept his smile as he reciprocated Winry's kisses. "I love you, Win."

After a few more kisses, Ed kissed the blonde's forehead and pulled her fully into himself to embrace her. They spent a few minutes like that until they parted with smiles on their faces to continue watching the stars this time with their hands intertwined and with immense joy inside them knowing that the long awaited moment to start a romantic relationship with the love of their lives had finally arrived.

Ed was pulled out of his memories by his girlfriend's voice. "Ed, do you think it's a good idea for us to show up unannounced at Mrs. Gracia and Elicia's house?" Winry asked as she lifted herself off his shoulder so she could look him in the eye since she had the impression that the blond was starting to get lost in thought.

"Huh?" Ed asked as his mind finished registering the question the blonde had asked him. "Ah yes, don't worry about it. You know they won't mind and I'm sure they'll be glad to see us." He averted his gaze a little so he could see one of the clocks in the park. "We'd better go right now so it doesn't get any later. Knowing you, we'll be spending all day tomorrow all over town buying various things and won't get a chance to go look at them." He concluded with a smile.

Winry rolled her eyes in amusement at the touch of exaggeration in her tone that her boyfriend had used at the end and then smiled and nodded.

They both stood up and took each other's hand again and headed towards the Hughes' house with leisurely steps, enjoying the light breeze in the air. What they didn't realize was that, a few meters away from them, someone was watching them carefully.

"We're so glad to have you guys around, aren't we, Elicia?" Gracia Hughes said cheerfully as she finished pouring tea to share with her guests.

"Yes. I missed you so much, big sister." Said the little girl as she hugged Winry who was sitting next to her on the couch.

"I missed you a lot too, Elicia." Replied the blonde as she returned the warm hug.

Ed was sitting on the other side of Winry, discreetly hugging her by the shoulders, a gesture that didn't go unnoticed by the perceptive wife of Maes Hughes.

"I see Roy wasn't lying when he told me that you two had finally resolved your feelings." Gracia said with a big smile.

Ed started coughing to keep from choking on his tea while Winry helped him recover by gently patting his back, unable to disguise her flushed face.

"Look, Mommy, they're both blushing." Elicia mentioned, eliciting a slight giggle from Gracia.

"Apparently he couldn't keep quiet." Said Ed slightly embarrassed as he caught his breath.

"He brought it up because I asked him about you and Riza. There's nothing to be embarrassed about, Ed. About you two it was too obvious. I knew you'd end up together sooner or later." Though still somewhat embarrassed, Ed smiled at her. "You know, I'm also glad to know that you've given him and Riza a chance to be a part of your life." Gracia smiled somewhat nostalgically. "I still remember how much Maes wanted to meet his best friend's son. There was a time when he wanted to start an investigation. He thought maybe he'd get lucky in finding you and that you'd be the means to fix the problems they were having back then."

"He really wanted to do that? Were they that bad?" Winry asked incredulously.

Gracia nodded as her gaze turned a little sad. "Ishval did a lot of damage to all the combatants. Maes suffered a lot but fortunately I was always by his side so he didn't have to deal with the aftermath alone. Unfortunately this could not be the case for Roy and Riza. After the war they both had a fatal couple of months. Maes did his best to help him and even looked for a way to contact Riza to help her, even though he hardly knew her at the time. It took time for both of them to heal and regain the trust they once had for each other but I'm so glad they finally did, because whenever I had the chance to see them together, I had to admit that my meddling husband..." She said this last in a joking tone to lighten the mood. "was absolutely right when he told me that they were meant for each other."

"And in the end what made him give up looking for me?" Ed asked curiously.

"Roy asked him not to. He told him they were resigned to what happened, that they didn't even deserve to meet you and didn't want to disrupt your new life."

"It's definitely something they would say." The blond replied.

Gracia looked Ed in the eye with a smile. "That's why I'm glad fate brought you two back together, otherwise it wouldn't have been possible. I know Maes was very fond of you from the moment he met you, but if he were here now, I'm sure he'd be screaming with excitement to know you were his long lost nephew."

"Yes, that sounds like something Mr. Hughes would do." Winry replied with a smile. "It wouldn't even be unusual for him to start a photo collection of you."

"And he probably would have also kept pushing you two to start your courtship." Gracia said with a slight chuckle.

"Oh, he would certainly do that." Ed commented and they all laughed.

After a few moments of laughter, Gracia continued the conversation. "That's why, Ed, I'm so glad you opened your heart to them. They did do harm like my husband, but they have suffered a lot because of it and are still working to prevent other people from having to go through what they experienced firsthand. They are good people."

"Yes, I know. It hasn't been easy to take it all in, but I think I've been getting better at it little by little. Now I'm happy because I have them, I had good foster parents, I have a brother, a grandmother, good friends and a beautiful girlfriend by my side." Ed said this last tenderly taking Winry's hand to squeeze it gently as he blushed slightly and smiled, a gesture that was immediately returned by the girl.

"Siblings, do you know when my uncle Roy and aunt Riza are coming to visit me?" Elicia asked suddenly.

"They will probably slip away and come to greet you in a couple of days. They will be visiting for work purposes here in Central, so if they get a chance I'm sure they will come." Winry replied with a smile.

"Yessssss, I'll cross my fingers that they don't have too much work and I can see them." Replied the little girl excitedly, making everyone present smile. "By the way, brother." The little girl brought her hand to her chin thoughtfully as her father did. "If you're my Uncle Roy and Aunt Riza's son, that means you're actually my cousin, right?"

"Uh... I guess." The blond hesitantly replied, understanding that the little girl was looking for a completely familial bond instead of her usual affectionate word of 'brother' and 'sister' that she had previously used with him, Al and Winry.

"Of course it is, sweetie." Gracia said, placing her daughter on her lap as she hugged her. "But remember that for the moment, this must be a secret, no one but us can know, okay?"

The little girl nodded. "I always wanted to have cousins, because if Ed is now one and since Winry is his girlfriend, that means she's my cousin too, isn't that right, Winry?"

"That's right, Elicia. But don't forget what your mommy said, it's a secret between us." Winry replied smiling though with flushed cheeks. Afterwards, she turned slightly to look at Gracia. "With everything you've told us, I can now better understand the friendship that existed between the General and Mr. Hughes."

Gracia smiled as she recalled her husband's friendship with his best friend. "Maes and Roy really were great friends. They were practically like brothers. Roy is not the kind of person who likes to show his affection openly, he usually does it in private, when he feels comfortable, and he shows it more with actions than words. My husband was always the troublemaker and your father the curmudgeon." Gracia laughed as she said that. "Maybe that was one of the things that made them get along so well, that they were so different in character that they complemented each other perfectly. That's why I know that for Roy Maes' death has been difficult and I don't doubt that at the time he blamed himself for it, just as you did, Ed. In that you are very similar to him. I really think that if it hadn't been for Riza being there for him, he probably would have done something foolish."

Ed immediately remembered what happened in the tunnels during the Promised Day and felt a shiver run through him. "I totally agree with you, if it wasn't for her, we would have long since lost him."

"She is what he needs to keep him going, just as he is what keeps her going. Just like you two."

Ed and Winry smiled and squeezed each other's hand.

"So, I look forward to the day when they can really be together as a couple. It's something Maes always wanted to see, his best friend happily married next to the woman he's always loved."

"So, when he used to go to his office and pester him by telling him to get a wife..." Ed began.

"He meant just that." Gracia finished the sentence. "To him quit stalling and marry Riza. Maes believed that if he kept insisting on that, one of them would give in and they'd find a way to make it happen."

"And neither of them made the attempt to start a relationship with someone else?" Winry asked not being able to contain her curiosity.

Gracia shook her head. "Not that I'm aware of. For those of us close to Roy, we knew very well that the vast majority of his dates were informants and for the ones that weren't, we knew he wanted nothing to do with them by the way he looked at them. As time went on, we understood that he kept doing all that to keep his true intentions of moving up in the military and to keep Riza safe. I could bet his heart has always been and always will be hers."

"Wow, I always felt there was something between them when I first met them but I never thought there was anything that deep until Ed told me about his origins." Winry commented.

"Well, I'm glad to know that at least Mustang hasn't been an asshole bastard to my mother." Commented Ed who received a smack on his head from Winry. "Ouch! What was that for?" the blond asked as he rubbed his head.

"Vocabulary, Edward. We don't want little Elicia to learn your bad words. Elicia, please ignore the nonsense your dumb cousin says."

Elicia laughed. "Okay." Gracia just smiled and seeing that there were no more questions for the moment, she decided it was the perfect time to enjoy a snack.

"Okay, who wants apple pie?" Gracia asked cheerfully.

After spending some time at the Hughes' house, Ed and Winry decided to head back to their hotel to rest as the next day would be spent out shopping and exploring the city. Once they got inside the hotel they stopped at the door to Winry's room.

"You know, Win, I have to admit that the General has been a good actor all this time. Mrs. Gracia spoke very highly of him and very fondly, as did Elicia."

"I think by now that's more than obvious. If you weren't so stubborn and airheaded you would have figured it out a long time ago."

"Hey!" grumbled the blond making the girl laugh.

"At least I'm glad you've already accepted it. Both the General and the Captain are good people."

"Yes, they are and I'm very proud of them" Ed smiled "Well... even though everything that happened with me made them suffer a lot, I'm glad my mother made that decision, because if she hadn't I wouldn't have met you." Ed mentioned this last looking into Winry's beautiful blue eyes as he leaned in and stole a kiss.

Winry smiled at Ed's gesture of affection and then brought one of her hands up to the blond's cheek. "It pains me to know that they suffered so much for you, but I agree with you. I don't know what I would have done if I had never met you." She reached up and gave him a quick kiss on the lips. "I'm glad things are finally falling into place for them as well as for you."

"Me too."

"Well, we'd better get some rest." Ed nodded. "Good night, Ed." She said giving him a huge smile.

"Good night, Win." Before heading to his room he stole another kiss from his girlfriend, who kissed him back gladly.

The next day the two lovebirds headed downtown to start shopping the medicines and food supplements for Al as well as some errands from Granny Pinako.

"Phew... I can't believe Granny Pinako asked us for so many things from different stores." Ed complained.

"Oh, come on, Ed. She doesn't leave Resembool, it's only natural that when the opportunity presents itself she's going to take it."

"And more so if she doesn't have to be carrying. I'm beginning to worry how we're going to make it for the trip back with all this."

"And I'm still missing my things and your books." Winry replied smiling.

"Damn." Ed grumbled.

"Quit complaining, let's go drop this stuff off in our rooms so we can go in search of a good place to eat."

The couple left the stuff in their rooms and enjoyed a nice meal at a small restaurant that was located near the park. They then headed to an automail parts store they stumbled upon on their way where they spent about 3 hours while Winry decided what to buy and exchanged mechanic experiences with the owner of the place.

How did I fall in love with such an automail freak? Ed thought, but when the blonde turned to him with a huge smile on her face and put a small oilcan in his hand, he reminded himself why.

"Here, Ed, this lubricant is some of the best, it will certainly help your leg a lot." Winry mentioned before turning again in the direction of the counter to continue ordering things.

Ed smiled. Winry is always thinking of others, it's one of the things I love her for.

When they finally left the store, it was getting dark. Ed was carrying several shopping bags in his arms while Winry walked cheerfully beside him, telling him about the interesting things she had learned there. Once they had left the shopping in their rooms, she took him by the hand.

"Ed, the night looks beautiful, can we go for a walk in the park to see the stars?"

Ed was exhausted, but he couldn't say no to the beautiful blonde in front of him. "Sure." He said with a smile.

Both blondes arrived at the park and sat on a bench enjoying the night breeze and appreciating the stars that could be seen from there. Winry leaned her head on Ed's shoulder as he hugged her. After a while, she closed her eyes and enjoyed the scent of her boyfriend. A few minutes passed like that until suddenly Ed tensed up, causing Winry to pull away from him to find out what was wrong.

"What's wrong, Ed?"

"Hmm... nothing."

"Don't lie to me, what did you forget this time?" She said in a joking tone.

"Hey! Why do you always assume I forget something?"

She prodded his ribs playfully. "Because that's the way it usually is."

He sighed. "It's not."

Seeing Ed didn't smile, she pressed. "Come on, tell me, what's wrong?"

He put his hand to the back of his neck nervously. "I'm not sure, but I get the feeling someone's watching us."

Discreetly, Winry did a scan around them. Everything seemed normal, there were a few couples some distance away from them and a group of children running followed by their parents heading for their homes. Gradually the place was emptying out, but from there on out nothing and no one suspicious could be discerned.

"Maybe you're imagining things."

"Maybe, but I keep getting this strange feeling."

"Maybe someone is watching us. After all, after what happened during the Promised Day, many soldiers recognize you and might have told their families and acquaintances about your exploits."

"I'm probably getting paranoid." Ed joked.

"No wonder, after all you went through along with Al it's totally understandable." Winry told him as she stroked his hand.

Ed was quiet for a few seconds. Noticing his worried expression Winry stared at him trying to ask him with her eyes to be honest with her.

Ed sighed and gave Winry's hand a squeeze. "I know everything has been going well in the last few months and I hope it stays that way but... after everything that happened sometimes I'm afraid that something bad will happen and... I'm worried that I won't be able to protect you. After all, I don't have my alchemy anymore."

Winry smiled at him as she stared into his eyes. "You don't need to worry about it. Everything is and will continue to be fine. Besides with or without alchemy you are someone very capable. Have you already forgotten that time you defended me from some bullies at school? You did it with your fists, without a single bit of alchemy."

Ed laughed a little at the memory. He'd given those boys a couple of black eyes.

"So don't worry and we might as well enjoy the moment." Winry continued to look at Ed tenderly.

The blond nodded and pulled Winry close again in his embrace. "I love you, Win."

"I love you too, Ed."

As they began their walk back to the hotel holding hands, Ed's bad feeling increased as he heard several footsteps behind them. He discreetly turned his head to look at his surroundings but could see no one. Winry obviously sensed her boyfriend's uneasiness and also looked at her surroundings but couldn't see anything suspicious, so she tried to reassure him by lightly tightening her grip and flashing him a smile.

"Relax Ed, it's all good. Besides we're together aren't we?"

Ed returned the smile and in that instant he felt a pleasant sense of peace and tranquility reign in his being. He stopped walking and approached Winry to kiss her tenderly on the lips.

"Right, Win. We're in this together." Ed replied as they broke away from the kiss to continue their walk.

They walked a couple more streets and as they came to an area where there was strangely no illumination when there had previously been when they had passed by earlier, Ed decided to quicken his pace without letting go of Winry, but suddenly they heard some thumps and groans of pain that startled both youths.

"Ed, what was that?" whispered Winry.

"I don't know, Win, but we'd better move on." Said the blond pulling Winry along.

"But what if someone needs help?"

"We'll report it from the hotel, come on."

Before they could keep going a pair of black clad figures appeared in front of them blocking their way. Ed tried to go around them but was unsuccessful. He felt his pulse quicken and instinctively placed Winry behind him before confronting the people in front of him.

"What do you want? Let us get through!" snarled Ed, as he stepped in front of Winry protectively.

The people in front of them approached menacingly, Ed stepped back with Winry but when he took a quick glance behind him, he noticed that another group of people had cornered them on the other side. Shit. What the hell are these guys up to? Why does this situation have to arise at this time when Win is with me and I can't defend her? Ed clenched his hands into fists, preparing to attack while still standing protectively in front of the blonde. Winry for her part, pulled a wrench she always carried with her from her purse in an attempt to defend herself.

"That's not going to do you any good, young lady." Said one of the people.

Taking advantage of Ed and Winry's slight confusion at the assurance with which the person proclaimed his words, the strangers rushed over to apprehend them. Without letting go of Winry's hand, Ed managed to connect his fist with the cheek of one of the people in front of him while a cry of pain let him know that Winry had managed to connect a blow with her wrench. However, the taste of those small victories didn't last them long as, being surrounded, the others soon got their hands on them.

"Let her go! Don't you dare hurt her!" shouted Ed angrily as he flailed violently trying to free himself from the people holding him.

Both struggled but could not break free from the grip of their captors due to being outnumbered. Ed tried to throw kicks with his automail leg without much success.

"Keep quiet and come with us."

Before any of the youths could do anything, they were hit in the back of the head knocking them unconscious on the spot. They were dragged towards a black van that was waiting for them at the corner. Once the captors got into the van and one of them had closed the passenger side door, the driver asked.

"Everything ready?"

"Yes, everything went as expected." Replied the co-driver.

"Perfect. Let's not waste time." With that said he stepped on the accelerator and the van was lost in the darkness of the city.
