Brooke made her way to the fifth avenue exit of central park. She had just finished her two-mile run that she had been trying to maintain during her travels. She walked across the street and up to their apartment. Patrick smiled at Brooke as he opened the door for her.
"Mrs. Scott," Patrick said as Brooke smile.
"Patrick, I've asked you to call me Brooke so many times." Brooke said.
"You'll have to ask me once more," Patrick said as she laughed. She walked to the elevator and got up to their apartment. She took a quick shower, and got ready quickly. She needed to be in the office reviewing many designs for the next show and collection coming out. She got dressed in a pair of jeans, a white blouse that ties into a bow in the back, and put on her tennis shoes from her upcoming collection to check their quality. She grabbed her Dior leather backpack and headed out to her coffee. She walked into the coffee shop and waited for her coffee. She then noticed Lindasy leaving the coffee shop with a daughter that looked about the age of her boys. She grabbed her coffee and then walked out the door. Brooke's heart raced as she watched Lindsay disappear into the bustling streets of New York City. Her mind spun with a mix of shock, confusion, and curiosity. Keeping a safe distance, Brooke trailed Lindsay through the crowded streets, weaving through throngs of people as they went about their daily routines. The city's energy seemed to intensify, mirroring the emotions swirling within Brooke. She wondered how long Lucas had kept this secret and why he had never mentioned it to her. Was he aware of Penny's existence, or had Lindsay kept her hidden all these years? As Brooke continued to follow Lindsay, she noticed subtle resemblances between the child and Lucas—similar facial features, the way they held themselves. The realization only deepened her curiosity and her desire to uncover the truth. Thoughts of how Lucas would react to her discovery plagued her mind, but she knew she had to confront this secret head-on.
Lucas found himself in a whirlwind of activity as he managed the morning routine on his own. With a busy day ahead at school, he needed to be out the door quick this morning. As he prepared cereal for the kids, he also took the time to pack their lunches, knowing that he had a parent meeting for the basketball season later in the day. One by one, his children trickled down the stairs, signaling the start of another eventful morning. Keith was the first to arrive in the kitchen. He looked a bit flustered. Lucas watched as Keith moaned and groaned as he sat down.
"Dad I'm sick…" Keith said as he trailed off and held his stomach. " Lucas raised an eyebrow, seeing through Keith's ploy.
"Nice try, buddy, but I'm not buying it. You've had plenty of time to prepare for the test." He said as he placed his breakfast in front of him. "Finish your breakfast and grab your things. We're leaving in fifteen minutes." He said as Keith groaned. Next, Davis came down the stairs, dressed and ready for school. He sat down at the table and pulled out his notes. Lucas observed him diligently reviewing his notes, clearly prepared for the test.
"Good morning!" Davis said.
"Morning bud. Ready for that test today?" Lucas asked as he looked over at Keith.
"Studied all weekend!" Davis said.
"Great job, Davis. Keep up the good work."He said with a smile and went back to packing lunches. Lily made her way downstairs, wearing an outfit that was clearly inappropriate for school. Lucas couldn't help but shake his head. "Lily, go back upstairs and change. That's not suitable for school."
Lily, was not having a good morning. She crossed her arms and stopped at the bottom step. "No I dont want to. Everyone wears this."
Lucas took a deep breath, maintaining his composure. "Lily, I understand you want to express yourself, but there's a time and place for everything. Dress appropriately for school, and we can discuss your personal style later. Now, go and change." He said. Lily stood there with her hands on her hips. "Go now." He said sternly and pointed up the stairs. Lily groaned. As Lily stomped back up the stairs, Lucas turned his attention to Kieran, who was just coming down. He greeted Kieran with a warm smile, trying to shift the focus away from the previous argument. "Hey, good morning Key."
"Good morning!" Kieran said. "What's wrong with Lily?" He asked as Lucas rolled his eyes.
"Just your sister being your sister. Did you get your essay printed?" Lucas asked.
"Yeah." Kieran said. "And today is the debate chair tryout."
"Good luck! Lucas said as he patted Kieran on the back. He was about to ask about the tryouts when their conversation was abruptly interrupted by the sound of heated yelling coming from upstairs. Lucas's heart sank as he realized it was Keith and Lily, engaged in yet another argument. Realizing he couldn't ignore the situation, Lucas clenched his jaw and quickly ascended the stairs to find his two children in the midst of a fierce verbal battle. He raised his voice above the commotion, his tone carrying a mix of frustration and disappointment. "Enough!" Lucas's voice boomed through the hallway, causing both Keith and Lily to freeze in their tracks. "We're already running late, and I won't put up with this behavior. Keith, get ready and be downstairs in five minutes. Lily, you're already on thin ice, and I won't hesitate to follow through with the consequences if you continue this behavior." As Lucas delivered his stern message to Lily, his voice firm and filled with authority, he hoped his words would finally get through to her. However, instead of a moment of realization, Lily's defiance flared even brighter. Her eyes narrowed, a mixture of anger and frustration evident on her face. Without a word, she turned on her heels and stormed away, her footsteps echoing loudly through the hallway. The door to her bedroom slammed shut with a resounding thud, reverberating through the house. Lucas felt his blood boil as his frustration reached its peak. He clenched his fists, his brows furrowing in anger. This is not how he raised her to behave.. He made his way to Lily's bedroom. He stopped at her dor and knocked. "Lily, open this door right now!" Silence greeted him from the other side, intensifying his irritation. He knocked again, louder this time, his tone filled with a mix of anger and concern. "Lily, I won't tolerate this behavior. Open the door!" The door creaked open slightly after what felt like an eternity, revealing Lily's teary-eyed face. Her defiance had transformed into a mixture of frustration and remorse. Lucas softened his expression; his voice laced with a combination of firmness and care. Upon entering Lily's room, Lucas noticed the lingering tension in the air. He looked at Lily, her eyes red from tears, and asked gently, "Lily, can you tell me what caused the fight between you and Keith?"
Lily sniffled "Keith came into my room this morning and started calling me names. He was being rude and mocking me for no reason. I couldn't take it anymore, so I yelled back at him."
Lucas sighed, his brows furrowing with concern. He nodded understandingly and placed a hand on Lily's shoulder. "I'm sorry you had to go through that, Lily. It's not right for Keith to treat you that way. I will have a serious conversation with him about respect and boundaries." Knowing that addressing the issue with Keith would have to wait, Lucas shifted his focus back to Lily. He gently brushed away a stray tear from her cheek and said, "Right now, I need you to focus on getting dressed in a proper outfit and preparing for school. I need to get going."
Lily nodded her expression, still a mix of sadness and relief that her father had acknowledged her feelings. She wiped away the remaining tears, determined to put the fight behind her for now. "Okay, Dad," she replied softly. "I'll change and get ready."
Lucas gave her a reassuring smile, proud of her willingness to cooperate. "That's my girl. I'll speak to Keith about his behavior, but for now, let's focus on getting through the morning routine."
As Lily gathered herself and selected a different outfit, Lucas stood up, ready to address the situation with Keith. But with time pressing on, Lucas knew that resolving the immediate conflict and ensuring everyone got to school on time was his priority. He left Lily's room, taking a deep breath and summoning the patience he needed to navigate through the morning's challenges. The household may have been filled with tension, but Lucas was determined to steer his family back toward a path of harmony and understanding. After successfully getting the middle schoolers, out the door and onto the school bus, Lucas turned his attention back to the house. The hallway seemed unusually quiet, and he realized he hadn't heard much movement coming from upstairs. Concerned, he called out to Lily in a calm and endearing tone, hoping to get a response.
"Lily, sweetheart, are you ready? It's time to go," Lucas called out, his voice filled with warmth and patience. However, there was no response. The silence lingered, causing Lucas to furrow his brows with a hint of worry. He couldn't afford to be late for his staff meeting. Turning his attention to Kieran, who was patiently waiting, Lucas spoke urgently. "Kieran, don't leave without your sister. I have to get going for a staff meeting."
Kieran nodded, understanding the responsibility that was being entrusted to him. "I'll make sure Lily is ready, Dad. Don't worry, I won't leave without her." Feeling reassured by Kieran's commitment, Lucas quickly grabbed his briefcase and headed toward the front door. Before leaving, he turned back and gave Kieran a reassuring smile.
"Thank you, Kieran. I trust you to take care of Lily. Make sure you both get to school on time, and I'll catch up with you later," Lucas said, his voice filled with gratitude and confidence in his responsible son. With that, Lucas hurried out the door, the weight of his staff meeting pressing upon him. Kieran made his way upstairs to Lily's room, concerned about his sister and eager to understand what had transpired between her and Keith. As he entered the room, he found Lily sitting in front of her mirror, carefully touching up her makeup after her earlier tears. Kieran's heart went out to her, and he sat beside her, comforting her.
"What happened, Lily?" Kieran let out a sigh, her eyes meeting her brother's in the reflection of the mirror.
"He just came in here and started mocking me, saying hurtful things for no reason. I couldn't take it, and I lashed out." Kieran's protective instincts flared up, but he maintained a calm demeanor. He reached out and placed a reassuring hand on Lily's shoulder. "I know it's tough, Lily, but you can't let Keith get under your skin like that. He's just trying to push your buttons. Remember, he's not worth your energy. Blow it off and rise above it." He said. Lily nodded.
"You're right, Kieran. I shouldn't let him get to me. Thanks for being here for me," she said, her voice filled with gratitude.
Kieran returned her smile, squeezing her shoulder gently. "Always, Lily. We're a team, remember? We'll get through this together." With their sibling bond strengthening, the conversation shifted to lighter topics as they went downstairs. They chatted about school, their upcoming assignments, and their plans for the day. The tension from earlier began to dissipate, replaced by a sense of camaraderie and mutual understanding.
As they reached the bottom of the stairs, ready to leave for school, Kieran put his arm around Lily, guiding her toward the front door. "Let's leave all this behind, Lily. Focus on the positive and have a great day at school. I'll be right there with you."
Lily smiled, feeling a renewed sense of strength and confidence. "Thanks, Kieran. I'm lucky to have you as my brother."
As Lucas sat in his staff meeting, his mind drifted away from the agenda at hand. He couldn't help but reflect on the chaotic morning he had experienced with his kids, particularly his daughter Lily. He furrowed his brows, the memory of their argument lingering in his thoughts.
Deciding to reach out to his children, Lucas discreetly pulled out his phone and composed a heartfelt message. "Hey, kiddos! Just wanted to remind you all how much I love you. We're having dinner tonight at Karen's cafe at 7pm. Can't wait to see you there! Love, Dad." Lucas pressed the send button and anxiously awaited the replies. The notifications chimed one by one, and he was relieved to see responses from Kieran, Davis, and Keith.
Kieran: "Sure, Dad! I'll be there. See you at 7!" Lucas couldn't help but smile at Kieran's response.
Keith and Davis: "Burgers at Karen's? Sounds like a plan, Dad! We're in, and we'll bring our appetites. Can't wait!" Lucas chuckled at the joint response from the mischievous twins. Their enthusiasm for food was infectious, and he was grateful for their light-hearted presence in their family gatherings. However, there was still no text from Lily. A sense of unease crept over him once more as he realized her absence. The memory of their argument weighed heavily on his mind, and he couldn't help but feel a twinge of sadness. Trying to put aside his worry, Lucas refocused on the staff meeting.
Lily walked down the hallway and stopped in front of the drama classroom. There were a couple of students gathered in groups. She didn't know any of them yet, so she sat down and assigned the wall by herself. She pulled her phone out and sighed. Still, not a single word from Tanner. They spoke last night after he went home, and he said that he needed some time to sit with the letters and fire news. He just couldn't understand the thought process behind getting the letters. She texted Spencer good luck on the debate tryouts. She saw her dad's text and rolled her eyes. Just as she put her phone away, Charlie came down the hall smiling. He was about to turn the corner to go down the next hall to the gym when he noticed Lily.
"Hey Lils!" Charlie said. He stopped in front of her and looked down.
"Hey." Lily said.
"Whatcha doin all alone?" He asked.
"Waiting for them to post the cast list." She said.
"By yourself?" He asked. "You're never alone. Where's that boyfriend of yours." He smirked.
"He's not my boyfriend." She snapped back. He nodded and then sat down next to her.
"What happened?" He asked.
"I ended up telling Tanner about the letters." She said.
"And?" He said.
"He didn't like it I guess. I don't know. I told him yesterday at the pool and he said he needed space to think about it." She sighed.
"Oh I'm sorry Lily." He said with a sigh. "Well you know you don't have to be in a relationship." He said and Lily made a face at him.
"And how long have you been dating Heather." She snapped again. He sighed and then laughed a bit.
"I wouldn't really say that Heather and I are dating. It's more friends with benefits." He said for the first time aloud. "It just seems like we are because I make it seem like that I guess." He shrugged. "So like I said you don't need a relationship." He said. She looked at him and he smiled. Around them students gathered closer to the drama classroom door. Some students were thrilled, some upset. Lily stood up and walked to the list. She found her name on the list and followed it over. A little smile started to form on her face. She turned around and walked back over to Charlie who was standing up.
"So are you the tree?" He laughed as she hit his chest.
"Shut up!" She laughed.
"What part did you get?" He asked.
"Sophie!" She said with a huge smile. "I guess all the voice and dance lessons paid off." She said.
"Oh damn I'm sorry." He said as she made a funny face at him.
"Sophe's the daughter. She's a major role." She said.
"Oh." He said. "I figured with a play called Mamma Mia the main role was Mia." He said as she laughed.
"Wooooow…first it's called a musical." She said as they walked towards their lockers.
As Davis and Keith entered the English classroom, their footsteps echoed in the hushed atmosphere. The scent of freshly sharpened pencils and anticipation filled the air. It was the day of the test, covering chapters 1 through 3 of the novel, Where the Red Fern Grows. Davis had dedicated his entire weekend to diligently studying the material. He knew the characters, the plot twists, and the underlying themes by heart. On the other hand, Keith, being his usual carefree self, had let the weekend slip away without cracking open the book. As they settled into their desks, Davis couldn't help but notice Keith's nervous fidgeting. The teacher, Mrs. Johnson, approached the front of the class and distributed the test papers. Davis glanced over at Keith, who seemed increasingly anxious. Sympathy welled up within him for Keith and he didn't want to see him fail. As the minutes ticked away, Davis noticed Keith sneak glances in his direction, desperation evident in his eyes. An idea began to form in Davis's mind. He pondered the consequences of his actions, weighing his moral compass against his desire to help a friend in need. Eventually, his compassion won out. Silently, Davis slid his test paper closer to Keith, positioning it discreetly for him to see. With a quick, subtle nod, he conveyed his willingness to assist. Keith's expression transformed from worry to relief as he stole glances at Davis's answers. Throughout the test, Davis offered subtle hints, pointing Keith in the right direction without drawing attention from their vigilant teacher. It was a delicate balance between helping a friend and maintaining academic integrity, a line Davis treaded carefully. Keith finished scribbling his answers as the final minutes ticked away, largely thanks to Davis's discreet assistance. They exchanged a grateful glance, understanding the secret they now shared. But beneath the relief, a twinge of guilt tugged at Davis's conscience. The bell rang, signaling the end of the class, and Davis and Keith quietly gathered their belongings. They walked out of the classroom, their secret lingering between them like an invisible weight. Davis couldn't shake the feeling that his actions might have compromised his integrity. Still riding the wave of relief from the successful cheating incident, Keith approached Davis at their lockers in between classes with a curious look on his face.
"Hey, Davis," Keith said, his voice tinged with gratitude and curiosity. "I've been meaning to ask you something. Why did you help me cheat on the English test?"
Davis paused for a moment. Taking a deep breath, Davis met Keith's gaze. "Look, Keith, I helped you cheat because...because I stole your lunch date with Dylan."
Keith's eyes widened, clearly taken aback. "Oh…"
Davis sighed, his voice laced with a mix of frustration and vulnerability. "Now we are even, and I think we should both just stay away from her." He said as he shut his locker door and walked away from Keith.
Kieran walked into Mrs. Collins' classroom after lunch, already dreading the next hour. It was no secret that she couldn't stand him. As he settled into his seat, he exchanged sympathetic glances with his friends, who knew what he was in for. Today, the class was assigned group work, and Kieran was relieved to have the chance to collaborate with his peers. He was determined to keep his head down and focus, hoping to avoid any unnecessary attention from Mrs. Collins. As his group discussed the assignment, Kieran contributed without making a single loud noise. However, it seemed that Mrs. Collins had other plans. She scanned the room with an eagle eye, her gaze landing on Kieran. "Kieran," she snapped, her voice dripping with annoyance. "Stop making those loud outbursts and concentrate on the group assignment!"
Kieran couldn't help but mumble under his breath, "What a bitch." To his surprise, his group burst into laughter, their stifled giggles filling the room. Mrs. Collins' face turned beet red, and she erupted in anger.
"That's it!" she shouted, her voice echoing off the classroom walls. "Hallway, now!" Kieran's heart sank as Mrs. Collins demanded he go out into the hallway. With a reluctant nod, he rose from his seat and made his way toward the door, feeling the weight of his classmates' gazes on his back. He couldn't help but feel a mix of frustration and embarrassment, knowing this wasn't the first time he had clashed with Mrs. Collins. Once outside the classroom, Mrs. Collins wasted no time in launching into a tirade. Her voice carried an edge of anger and exasperation. "Kieran, your behavior is out of control! I can't tolerate your constant disruptions and disrespectful attitude anymore. This ends now!" Kieran's eyes flickered with defiance, but he kept his lips sealed, knowing that further aggravating the situation would only make matters worse. As he stood there, trying to maintain his composure, he noticed a familiar figure approaching from down the hallway. It was Lucas.
Lucas, sensing the tension, quickened his pace. Concern etched his face as he looked from Mrs. Collins to Kieran. Without hesitation, he stepped forward, determined to intervene. "Mrs. Collins," Lucas interjected calmly but firmly, "I understand your frustration, and I'm here to address this matter with Kieran."
Mrs. Collins turned her gaze towards Lucas, momentarily taken aback. She recognized him as a fellow teacher and knew he had a reputation for fairness and level-headedness. After a moment of consideration, she nodded. "Very well, Lucas. I believe it would be beneficial for you to talk to Kieran and address these behavioral issues. Please make sure he understands the importance of respecting the classroom environment."Mrs. Collins stepped back into the classroom, leaving Lucas alone with Kieran in the hallway.
Lucas placed a comforting hand on Kieran's shoulder and looked at him with a mix of concern and curiosity. "Kieran, what happened? Why were you asked to leave the classroom?"
Kieran took a deep breath; his frustration was evident. "Dad, I didn't do anything wrong. We were working in groups, and I was focused on the assignment. Out of nowhere, Mrs. Collins accused me of making a loud outburst and demanded that I stop. But I didn't say or do anything to cause any disturbance."
Lucas listened attentively, his brow furrowing in disbelief. "Are you absolutely sure, Kieran? Is it possible that something you said or did unintentionally contributed to the situation?"
Kieran shook his head vehemently. "No, Dad, I swear. I was just minding my own business, trying to work with my group. It's like she singled me out and blamed me for something I didn't do. It's not fair!"
Lucas sighed, understanding the frustration in his son's voice. "Kieran, I believe you. Sometimes misunderstandings happen, and it seems like this is one of those cases. Get back in there and keep your head down. I will talk to Mrs. Collins after school." He said. Kieran nodded, grateful for his father's support. Together, they walked back into the classroom, ready to engage in a dialogue that would shed light on the misunderstanding and work towards a resolution.
The sun was starting to set, casting a warm glow over Karen's cafe rooftop where Lucas had arranged to meet his children. It was their usual spot, a place filled with memories and shared moments. Lucas had been looking forward to this evening, eager to catch up with each of his kids. As he climbed up the stairs, a smile stretched across his was already there, engrossed in her homework. Her brow furrowed in concentration as she solved math problems, oblivious to her surroundings. Lucas approached her and gently tapped her shoulder.
"Hey, Lily," he greeted, hoping to spark some conversation.
Lily looked up briefly, acknowledging her father with a nod, but quickly returned her focus to her work. Lucas felt a pang of disappointment, sensing the emotional distance between them. He took a seat next to her, giving her some space while silently vowing to find a way to reconnect with her.
Not long after, Kieran, Davis and Keith arrived. They burst onto the rooftop, laughter and excitement filling the air. Lucas couldn't help but smile at the sight of his energetic sons.
"Hey, Dad! Look at this!" Keith exclaimed, attempting a complex basketball move he had just learned. "Kieran taught me. Davis and Kieran chimed in, their words overlapping as they shared stories of their day at the river court. Lucas found himself caught in a whirlwind of their exuberance, trying to give each of them his undivided attention. But amidst their boisterous conversations, his thoughts were still drawn to Lily. As the lively banter continued between his sons, Lucas stole glances at Lily. She ate her food silently, her eyes focused on the plate, seemingly uninterested in the ongoing discussions. The weight of her disinterest weighed on him, and he couldn't help but wonder what had caused the growing divide between them.
With a deep breath, Lucas decided to take a moment to himself. He excused himself from the conversation with his sons, making his way over to Lily's side. Gently, he placed a hand on her shoulder, breaking her concentration.
"Lily, is everything alright?" Lucas asked softly, concern lacing his words.
Lily looked up, surprised by the attention directed towards her. Her eyes met her father's, and for a fleeting moment, Lucas caught a glimpse of the vulnerability hidden within.
"Yeah, everything's fine, Dad," Lily replied, her voice lacking its usual warmth.
Lucas hesitated for a moment, sensing that there was more left unsaid. He made a mental note to have a private conversation with Lily, to create a safe space where they could express their thoughts and emotions without distractions.
"Alright," Lucas said, giving her a reassuring smile. "Remember, I'm here for you if you ever want to talk, okay?"
Lily nodded, a faint smile playing on her lips. Though the distance remained between them, Lucas was determined to bridge the gap, to find a way to understand and reconnect with his daughter.
After what seemed like a never ending day, Lucas was finally home. Feeling a mixture of relief and exhaustion. Before he decided to call it a night, he walked upstairs to talk with his daughter. He got to her door and knocked. He heard a light come in so he opened the door. Lily was already laying down in bed. Lucas smiled and walked in. He sat on the edge of her bed and she sat up a bit.
rHe plopped down on the edge of his bed, finally having a moment to himself. He takes a deep breath and decided to call Brooke.
The phone rings a few times before Brooke answers. Her voice carries a touch of sadness as she says, "Hey, Lucas."
"Hey, Brooke," Lucas replies, trying to hide his own weariness. "I miss you so much."
"I miss you too," Brooke responds with a hint of longing. "How's everything going back home?"
Lucas lets out a sigh. "It's been a bit of a tough day, especially with Lily. I've been getting on to her a lot, and it doesn't feel great. I want to make things right."
Brooke's voice is filled with understanding. "Parenting can be challenging, and we all have those moments. But it's important to remember that we're a team. What do you have in mind?"
Lucas pauses for a moment, gathering his thoughts. "I was thinking, starting this Wednesday, the three of us—You, me, and Lily—can go out to dinner together. It would give us a chance to have one-on-one time with her. I want her to know that even when I discipline her, it's because I care about her growth. And we can continue this tradition, with each Wednesday being a different child's turn to go out with both parents."
There's a pause on the other end of the line, followed by Brooke's warm and appreciative tone. "Lucas, that's a wonderful idea. It will help us address the issues with Lily and strengthen our connection as a family. Thank you for suggesting it."
Lucas smiles, grateful for Brooke's support. "Thank you, Brooke. Our family means everything to me, and I want to ensure we maintain strong connections even when facing challenges. Let's make this Wednesday special for Lily, and in the coming weeks, we can have dedicated one-on-one time with each of our children."
Brooke's voice fills with gratitude. "I know you will, Lucas. You're an incredible father. I'm excited about this new tradition. It will create cherished memories for all of us."
The weariness of the day dissipates as Lucas realizes the impact of his suggestion. "I can't wait to see the smiles on their faces. Thank you for being an amazing partner, Brooke." After a few more minutes of talking and expressing their love, Brooke let's Lucas know she has to go because the person she is having dinner with just showed up. Brooke sets her phone in her purse and watches as the chair across from her is pulled out.
"Brooke." The person says as they sit.
"Lindsay." Brooke says.
