A New Beginning

This takes place in an Owl House AU where there is no Demon Realm (or at least the story doesn't take place in the Demon Realm) and many characters who are witches/demons and live in the Boiling Isles in cannon are humans in Gravesfield.

Ten Years Ago

Lightning and thunder flash through the sky. Meteorologists ponder this phenomenon since there is no data to suggest why there is lightning in the summer on a near cloudless night. Or why the lightning is orange for that matter.

A four year old girl named Luz covers herself under her bed waiting for the thunder to end as her mother comforts her.

Meanwhile Caleb Wittebane, CEO of "Belos Enterprises" stands outside his Pharmaceutical Research Center in Gravesfield, Connecticut.

The CEO watches a truck backs in. When it is parked the driver gets out of the vehicle. He is a heavy set man of Mexican heritage with a thick mustache. Beside him is a thin woman with long dyed-black hair wearing glasses and a lab-coat. She is Dr. Lilith Clawthorne, the head scientist at Belos Pharmaceutical Research Center. Caleb greets her warmly.

"Dr. Clawthorne. It's good to have you back. Is the creature unharmed?"

Three months ago, Belos' Earth Observation Satellites spotted an anomaly in Mozambique, Africa. While surveying an untouched region, the satellites detected that one of the local fauna in the area had grown much larger than the others of its kind. Leadwood trees normally grow up to 20 meters. However, one in particular specimen had reached a height of over 84 meters along a grove of regular sized lead woods.

This piqued the interest of Caleb Wittebane who sent a research team headed by Dr. Lilith Clawthorne to analyze the wood, soil and water samples to determine how this was possible. Lilith sent messages to her boss every day while she and her team analyzed the tree. They drilled holes in the tree and took tissue samples and found nothing abnormal. They checked the soul from around the tree and there was nothing either. After several weeks Caleb was about to call the whole thing off until one of the scientists dug up a large body of water underneath its roots.

Samples taken from the water indicated an unknown substance that they determined was responsible for the tree's abnormal growth. As well as evidence that a creature was living inside the pool.

Dr. Clawthorne motions for the driver to unlock the back. He does as he is told.

"I gotta to be honest Mr. Wittebane. I don't know what kind of thing this is, but it freaks me out." The driver says.

As soon as the driver opens the back, lightning suddenly booms and strikes across the sky. Caleb takes a step towards the back of the truck. In a secured tank of water is a creature. The creature is mostly transparent but with blue glowing lines across its back and down its "spine". It has dozens of arms out of its sides with "lobster-claws" and its head is large, ovular and clear. It swims around in the tank and bangs itself against the glass in an attempt to escape.

"It looks like a person's spine." The driver says disturbed.

"It resembles a Hallucigenia." Dr. Clawthorne says. "It was a species of prehistoric worm that lived during the Cambrian Period. But they were much smaller than THIS."

Dr. Clawthorne watches as the creature swims around. If she didn't know any better, she would say it may have gotten slightly bigger since extracting it.

"This could be a direct descendant."

"It's incredible." Caleb says. "You said before that you think this creature was the reason the waters were making the tree grow. Not the other way around?"

"Yes, when we tried extracting it from the water it released a vapor. We were all wearing hazmat suits, thank god, but the surrounding grass instantly sprouted." Lilith explains. "When I tried to take a tissue sample it immediately evaporated and the creature grew its tentacle back. I've decided to call it "Elivagar"."

The truck driver turns to her and gives her a crazy look.

"What the hell does that mean?" He asks.

"In Norse mythology Ymir, the first giant, was born from a substance called "eitr". And the eitr is said to have come from a river called "Elivagar". Given the effect that the substance it releases has on organic matter it seems appropriate."

The driver shrugs.

"Maybe you should just call it Eli."

Caleb thinks about "Eli's" capabilities. A creature that can induce biological growth has many possibilities. He thinks that it can be used as an additive in fertilizers to increase the size of yielded produce. It could even be used in certain livestock. Caleb also considers the creatures regenerative properties. If this is caused by some sort of enzyme then maybe it can be synthesized and applied to humans during surgery, to recover from injuries or other health benefits.

"Bring it inside. I want this creature thoroughly examined. I want to know everything that it can do and how it does it." Caleb says. "Now if you excuse me, I must discuss this with my wife and brother."

Caleb walks away as Lilith helps the truck driver grab onto the handles of the creature's tank. The driver unlatches it and they gently lift the tank up. The driver eyes the creature cautiously.

"Call this thing whatever you want. This thing is a devil." The driver says.

"It's a marine animal that needs to be observed." Lilith states.

"Say what you want, but when I look at that thing I sense bad news." The driver says, reluctantly hauling the creature inside with Lilith.

"Well, I for one believe that this creature is the key to a better future." Lilith says surely. "Not just for Gravesfield, but all humanity."

Very soon, Lilith would come to regret those words.

Ten Years Later

A lot has changed over the last ten years. Caleb passed away in a car crash not long after the recovery of the creature, along with his wife Evelyn, leaving their four year old son Hunter in the care of his uncle Philip, who took over Belos Enterprises. Upon taking over the family company, Philip shifted Lilith's research on the creature's capabilities in a different direction than his brother. Lilith tried serving him as a loyal employee for many years, but this feeling of devotion waned as she learned more and more about the creature's capabilities and Philips intentions with it.

Two figures break into the Gravesfield "Belos Pharmaceutical Research Center". They are led inside by Dr. Lilith Clawrhorne, who now has several gray streaks in her hair. The two figures in question are Lilith's sister Eda and her friend Camilla Noceda, the resident veterinarians.

"Alright, the coast is clear." Lilith says as she leads the other two women inside the lab.

Around it are workbenches with overgrown plants yielding tomatoes the size of basketballs. However, some of the benches also have scratch marks on the steel tops. And there are cages that have deformed giant mice the size of cats in them.

Camilla looks at one of the mice in the cage and offers it a carrot from her jacket pocket.

It does nothing.

"None of the affected specimens have been shown to move at night." Lilith says. "And it wouldn't eat carrots even if it was daytime. They absorb solar energy to nourish themselves. Except for, of course-"

Lilith shivers upon the memory of what the first mouse she ever exposed to Eli's vapors too did to the rest of the mice in its cage. It was a horror show. What's worse is that an examination of the affected mouse's interior organs confirmed that eating no longer even served a functional purpose.

Camilla gags upon remembering the video that Lilith showed her of the "experiments" that Philip Wittebane had Lilith conduct after he inherited the company. Especially the part when the mutated mouse simply vomited the "red-stuff" once it got "full".

"Yes, you showed me that video." Camilla reminds her.

Eda takes out her pocket knife and pokes the enlarged mouse with it. The wound heals as soon as she pulls it out of the mouse's chest. There isn't even any blood, there is only steam.

"Are we sure these things are even alive anymore?" Eda asks.

She places the knife to the mouse's nose to see if it is breathing.

The steel fogs up.

"Unfortunately, short of cutting the nape I think these mice can live forever now." Lilith says.

Eda bangs the canisters of gas resting on one of the work tables.

The label reads: "Blight Security, a subdivision of Belos Enterprises."

"And Phillip wants to hand this thing over to the Blights? Guys sick Lily." Eda says.

"Is that it?" Camilla asks, pointing to the left corner of the room.

There is a fish tank which houses "Eli" inside. It continues to swim around trying to find a way out but to no avail. Attached to the tank are several tubes that bring fresh water in and remove the old contaminated water. Lilith nods.

"Yeah that's it." She says. "Alright everyone, remember the plan?"

"I'll free the lab-animals. Camilla will grab the shiny centipede then we burn the place down!" Eda exclaims.

Lilith shushes her.

"Quiet! I may have bribed the security guard into turning off the cameras but there's still security all around this place."

Eda chuckles.

"Bribing, breaking and entering, stealing, never thought I would see the day Lily." Eda teases.

"All that's important is that this thing never comes near another human being again." Lilith says seriously. "It was fine when Caleb was in control, he was just having me grow big tomatoes. Then he dies in a car crash and next thing you know his brother is taking over and he's talking about experimenting with it on people! But if there's one thing I know, Edalyn, is that this thing can NOT come into contact with a human being!"

Lilith pulls out her lighter.

"Then we take Eli back to Africa, right?" Camilla asks.

"We'll figure out what to do with it when we're done here. Now let's-"

"What are you guys doing?"

Eda, Camilla and Lilith's eyes widen when they hear the voice of a young girl. They turn around and are shocked to find Camilla's daughter Luz standing behind them in her cat-hoodie. By her feet is Eda's black dog, King, who is happy to see his owner. King runs to Eda who, shocked, bends down and picks her dog up as everyone else just stares at Luz.

"Mija! What are you doing here!?" Camilla asks/screams.

"You guys left without a word so I followed you here on my bike." Luz says. "Mom, Eda, you two have been acting really weird all week. And why are we breaking into a-?" Luz notices the tomatoes. "-fancy greenhouse?"

Luz then notices Eli in its tank.

"Woah, what is that?" Luz says excitedly as she approaches the glass.

The creature seems to calm down as Luz approaches.

The young girl puts her hands and face to the glass and the creature mimics.

"It's like a human nervous system and a glow-worm mixed in one!"

Eli rubs its head on the glass in front of Luz.

"Aw, it likes me."

Camilla grabs her daughter's arm and pulls her back.

"Luz listen! You need to take King and leave, right now!"

"But mama, what are you doing? I can help."

"No you can't!" Camilla snaps. "Listen Luz, what we're doing…it's not even something I want to do-"

"Then you should surrender."

Eda, Lilith, Camilla and Luz turn to see the head of security, Mr. Wrath.

Mr. Wrath is a large, strongly built man with a large nose. Beside him are several security officers.

Eda smiles awkwardly and strikes a pose.

"Roger. Hey, don't mind us. Lily just stopped by to get some last minute research done. And I forgot some of my things and the veterinarian and her kid here are-"

"Nice try but I overheard everything." Mr. Wrath says.

He pulls out a gun and all the girls panic.

Camilla shields Luz with her body and King starts growling as Eda tries shutting him up.

"By the way Lilith, next time make sure that there's no one listening from the hallway before you decide to bribe anyone."

Eda turns to Lilith furiously.

"You didn't think to check your surroundings first!?"

Lilith smiled sheepishly.

"Listen, there's a kid here so why don't you just come with us before something bad happens." One of the security guards says.

"Roger, listen, this thing never should have left Africa." Lilith says. "You've seen what it does to everything it comes into contact with. And Philip-"

"What the boss wants to do with his property is not my concern." Mr. Wrath says.

"Wait hold on, is this all because of that thing?" Luz says pointing at Eli. "Mama what even is it?"

"I'll tell you everything later! But for now we have to get it and us out of here!"

"I said you aren't going anywhere!"

Mr. Wrath says as he points his gun at Camilla and Luz. Seeing this, King jumps out of Eda's arms and leaps at Mr. Wrath, sinking his teeth into the man's arm. The guard screams in pain as he tries to shake the dog biting him off. During his struggle his gun fires a few times. One nearly hits one of his own men, the other nearly hits Eda.

"Hey watch it bub!" Eda shouts.

"Eda!" Luz shouts, stepping out from behind Camilla.

"Luz no!" Her mother shouts.

The third bullet fired by Mr. Wrath fires and hits Luz straight in the chest.

Lilith gasps in shock. Camilla and Eda scream in horror, tears going down the former's eyes. Even all the guards and Wrath himself are shocked and horrified by what he has done as King releases himself from biting Wrath.

Luz falls backwards with enough force to shatter the tank containing Eli. The creature flips around on the ground as Luz lays in a puddle of water and broken glass, bleeding from her chest and with her eyes shut. Camilla, blinded by tears, rushes over and cradles her daughter.

"¡No no no no! Luz! ¡Quédate conmigo! ¡Mamá te tiene cariño! Luz despierta! ¡Por favor!"

Camilla places her ear to Luz's chest. Her heart is beating, but it's slower. Camilla places her hand on the bullet wound and turns to the security guards, who are still in shock.

"¿¡Que estas esperando!? ¡Llame una ambulancia! Alguien-Someone call an ambulance!"

Unnoticed by Camilla, Eli starts slithering over towards Luz. It gets behind her back and extends its tentacles towards the injured girl's spine. Lilith notices this and screams:

"CAMILLA! GET THAT THING AWAY FROM-"

As soon as Eli connects to Luz's spine, her eyes glow and a massive stream of orange lightning strikes from above. The lightning destroys the roof of the facility and hits Luz. Camilla is pushed back and sent flying into a nearby table and Eda goes to help her up.

Panicked, Mr. Wrath and the other guards try firing at the ball of orange energy forming before them and destroying everything else around, but it does nothing. Lilith steps back as the previously motionless gigantified-mice turn to face where Luz is and they even tilt their heads down as if to bow.

"LILY! WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON!?" Eda shouts.

"WHAT'S HAPPENING TO MY DAUGHTER!?" Camilla shouts.

"I don't know! I thought she would just grow!"

Luz's scream is heard as a large spine, rib cage and skull emerges from the energy. Growing larger and larger. The security guards run away as Mr. Wrath pulls out his walkie-talkie.

"Hello! This is Roger Wrath! I need everyone available to the Pharmacy building! Being everything you got! Tanks! Bring tanks!….What?….No it's not terrorist it's…." Mr. Wrath ducks to avoid falling debris. "…Just get over here ASAP! You'll see what it is!"

The growing figure starts to grow limbs and muscle tissue forms. Already it is so big that even when crouching down it is hitting its head on what's left of the roof and its knee is tearing down the wall. But it's STILL growing. It releases massive bursts of wind that pushes all the debris and tables around it away. Lilith has already run away but Camilla is frozen in shock. Her mind is unable to process that this thing in front of her is her daughter. Eda grabs Camilla's hand.

"Cammy! We gotta get out of here!"

"But what about Luz!"

"Luz is a big girl now! We can't help her if we're dead! Let's go!"

Eda pulls Camilla towards the exit.

The two women rush out of the building before it is completely destroyed. They join Lilith outside by the van they came in and where the guards are. The collapsing building has orange light coming out of it and blasts of wind.

"Eda! Mrs. Noceda!"

The two women turn around to see a fair skinned girl Luz's age with purple-dyed hair. Luz's girlfriend Amity Blight. She is riding up to the two women on her bike looking horrified.

"Amity! What are you doing here!?" Camilla shouts.

Amity stops in front of her.

"I came here to find Luz! She said she was gonna follow you guys here and I wanted to stop her from doing something stupid!"

"Well too late for that!" Mr. Wrath shouts.

"Quiet you! You shot her!" Eda retorts.

"You did what!?" Amity gaps at the guard.

Everyone watches horrified as the building is completely destroyed as a truly colossal creature grows out of it. Everyone gasps at what they see. The wind has stopped blowing and the energy release has stopped. But in the space where the research center was is a massive figure that looks like a bare naked person crouching down and holding their knees.

The figure stands up, rising into the air at least 73 meters tall. She is completely naked but there are no sex-organs visible on her body. It is just smooth tan skin and some gaps along her arms, legs and torso revealing exposed muscle. She doesn't even have a belly button or nipples. Ribs protrude from the front of her torso and her face has slits on her cheeks as well as skin missing around her eyes.

Amity recognizes her by her short brown hair.

"I…is that…LUZ!?"

"She touched the creature!" Lilith tells her.

"Oh no!"

The now gigantic Luz notices the tiny people on the ground. She gets on one knee and bends down to look at them. Everyone except Camilla, Amity and Eda step back.

"Oh man kid…." Eda says, saddened.
