Chapter One: Fifty-Two

(Twinleaf village)

"Hello Sweetie." His mother said as she took a seat away from him and just watched him eat his breakfast.

Normally he would have found it odd, but he knew that she wanted to spend as much time with her son before he had to go off to school. She was the same with Jazz when she went off to Vocans. Jazz may have pretended to be annoyed but he remembered seeing tears on her face when the carriages took off. That was why she packed some of her dolls in one of her trunks.

To remind her of their home.

He looked up from the pancakes he was eating to stare at his mother's face. The first thing that caught his attention was not anything specific about her face but rather what was above her face.

Madeline Masters

LV 1

Ever since he was born in this world, he had been living life as if it was a video game with all benefits and cons that came associated with it. Whenever he encountered a person his first instinct was to check the person's level. Better to find out how dangerous a person was early on. If he wanted further information about a target he could use [Observe] to learn their secrets and numerical stats. It had confused him in the beginning given that most people in the village were at level one.

At first, he thought it had been that this world was peaceful until the game informed him that instead of increasing levels other people's stats were increased. They had to accomplish many difficult missions to raise their levels and the people of this world rarely did the fighting themselves.

They left that to the demons. Demons are creatures that reside in the ether. Wizards and witches battled them to form contracts.

"Morning mom." Danny said giving his mother a smile and reached out to grab her hand while giving her a smile.

It was times like these that made him glad that the original version of him accepted the deal to be shattered across the omniverse.

"So, what do you plan on doing today?" Mom asked him.

Before Jazz's departure day the family went on a picnic and watched this world's version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. It was about a poor mage cursed to become an orc when he got angry but was saved by his witch fiancée. He thought it was kind of boring, but he was quickly whacked upon the head by his sister.

"I just planned on playing in the forest and enjoying walking around the village today. Enjoy the sights because it will be almost a year before I am back." Danny said.

Vocans Institute for Witchcraft and Wizardry held students for two-hundred-and-forty days. That was sixty days short of a full year on this world. Once accepted into the Institute students would be enrolled for four years before joining the royal army. Personally, it all sounded like a hassle, but quests were quests, and this was not one that he got to decline even if it ruined his plans.

"I do not like it but if it is what you want. I will tell your father." His mother said causing his smile to become a bit strained.

His relationship with most of his family was better than he could have ever dreamed and then there was his father. Vlad was not too bad of a father but there was a distance between them. Vlad was ambitious and until recently was unaware that his son had the potential to use magic. His attention was rather focused on Jazz as she was heiress to the family.

"Fine but do not stay out too late. You have to be up early to be picked up." Mom said getting up and reaching to hug him.

He just let her and enjoyed the love being sent his way.

"I know." Danny said before stuffing his face with the last pancake and walking to the door.

"Don't stay out too late. your sister is coming to see you off as well." His mother added as he got closer and closer to the outside.

The servants bowed to him as he moved through the house. No matter the world Vlad liked to live in large mansions. Everyone in the village knew that this was where the Baron Vladimir Masters lived. At least he got good experience points for defeating intruders aiming to rob or hurt the family.

"Have a good day, Master Daniel." The head butler Leonard said as he walked out the door.

"I will try my hardest." He said as he walked outside the gigantic house and towards the forest.

He wanted to get in some training today and see if he could reach level sixteen before he had to leave for school. He would probably be the strongest eleven-year-old at the school but there were plenty of things that could throw him around like a ragdoll. Whoever designed this world had a sick sense of humor. It was not unusual for villages to be wiped out by demons. Not to mention a war every couple decades or so with orcs that came to invade.

Whether it was the orcs, the demons, the elves, or something else entirely this country had something to fight against that would prevent him from becoming bored..

As Danny walked around the village he could see the people he had gotten to know the past few years. Lancer who worked as the village librarian, Cody Anderson the baker who always handed rolls of bread to the poor in the village, Weird Jim who somehow had lots of skills but his backstory was a mystery the game could answer but refused to, Beth a farmer that worked on the land but was always losing control of her hogs.

He was going to miss this place.

A [Threat Detected] screen popped up in front of his eyes.

"Watch out!" A voice called out gaining his attention to the ball that was flying towards his face.

"No problem." Danny said as he caught and returned the ball to the kids playing in the field. They looked like they were probably about eight-years-old. Their names floating above their heads saved him the time of having to ask them their names.

"Did you see that? He wasn't even looking?" Arnold the blond under a blue cap and a football shape head asked.

"Do you think he was using magic?" A tall kid with a sharp nose name Pete asked.

"Probably. He looks about the age to start at the Institute." The kid named Jerald with dark skin and a red shirt said.

Danny saw that the kids were still staring at him and so decided to have a little fun.

"[Teleport.]" Danny said activating the skill and thinking of the forest where ahead of the village. The spell would allow him to travel anywhere he had ever been but because of that there are many places in the world that he was barred from.

"Alright now time to get serious." Danny said as he looked around making sure that no one was around him. One [Instant Dungeon Creation] later and he was in a long white space with nothing else around him. In front of him was a floating screen with a list of available dungeons.

"Do you have an opinion on which to pick?" Danny asked the gaming system.

It was the interface that oversaw everything related to the game. Quests, stats, inventory, history.

They had been together since he could first speak.

[How about 52?]

"Alright." Danny said as he pressed the option for 52.

The white landscape before his eyes changed into a huge grass field with a castle in the distance. The wind was warm, the sky was clear with the sun shining beautiful golden rays.

"Today is a good day for murder and destruction." Danny said before breaking off into a run.

The moment he reached a certain distance the monsters started spawning. This far from the castle it would be numbers under five. They were called that because they wore numbers under five and their level matched the number.

The moment the soldier appeared before him he was ready.

"[Power Punch.]" Danny yelled his fist glowing green as it crashed into the steel warrior.

The moment the soldier was hit it shattered into pixels. The warriors under five were not that difficult. They had no weapons and ran at him with no thought. A good enough punch would shatter them. On days he was feeling angry he would just let the pile up in huge numbers so he could tear them apart. It helped him immensely. It sucked though that after he beat a dungeon the first time the exp was lowered.

Stupid game and it's belief in fairness. He had to go to what was the equivalent of military school because of it. Where was the fairness there?

[No whining. You think your life is unfair? I got stuck with you.]

"That is so harsh. you need a class in interpersonal relationships." Danny said jumped out of the way of a tackle by a two.

[Sure. I will go a week from next Tuesday.]

"You are not going to get me with that twice." Danny said as he used an incoming three to beat down on the level two. eventually they both shattered to pixels and vanished.

[It is sad that I fooled you with it once.]

"Is it too late to ask for another interface?" Danny asked as he watched a two, another two, and a four try to come at him from three different sides.

[Be careful what you wish for. The next one may not have a soft side for idiots.]

"I knew you care... wait a second." Danny said as he turned towards the game interface.

[Focus on leveling. I have told you that your intelligence needs more points.]

"I am going to come up with something really good just you wait." Danny said to the screens before going to go work on some division.

"[Hyperstride.]" Danny said as his legs began to glow blue.

He ran behind the four and swept at its leg knocking it to the ground. Its health lowered from the crash but not enough for it to break.

"I know the lot of you aren't the best at conversation, but I am going the teach the lot of you some division." Danny said as he picked up the soldier and began spinning it around. Opponents that could think would probably try to distance themselves from him but these poor individuals were not capable of it and so they just came closer and closer to their doom as they fulfilled their programming.

"What is four divided by two?" Danny asked his voice trailing as he kept spinning faster and faster.

The two of them would learn their lesson when he used the level four to crush the first level two monster to pixels.

"I hope you enjoyed your lesson." Danny said to the remaining level two monster to ashes with [Boltflare].

"[Hyperstride.]" Danny said as he charged at the last monster and shifted into a [Power Punch] that blew the last monster away literally.

It was time to move on from here before the monsters respawned. He wanted to reach the castle and defeat the boss before the day was over and it would not happen if he let himself be caught up with these weak monsters. It was a Friday which meant that the boss in the castle would be a joker. He would have preferred it to be a Monday so he could defeat the king, but it is what it is.

0-0-0-0-0-0

"How do I want to do this?" Danny asked himself as he stared at the castle in front of him.

The five plus were standing in front of the castle. They were better than the under-fives beyond the obvious as they were capable of using weapons. Seven were guarding the entrance to the castle while seven were holding on to crossbows that could fire bolts as thick as a soda can and as long as a pencil. They also had the ability to poison or paralyze a person with the slightest scratch. He found that out the first time that he challenged the dungeon. The poison would continue to affect him even after he stepped out of the dungeon.

Right now, his issue was figuring out how to get past the guards and take down the joker that was probably waiting in the center of the court. He was torn between going in stealthy like a ninja or charging straight in. It would be like waving a swinging a sledgehammer in a china shop without a shred of caution or restraint. It would not be the first time he tried such actions. Going berserk and seeing how far he could make it like something out of a medieval fantasy movie.

"[World Time.]" Danny said and watched as a screen appeared before him showing how long he had been in this dungeon.

It was easy to lose track when you were having fun and it would not be the first time, he had let almost whole days slip while having his fun.

It looked like he had been in this dungeon for about three hours. This world had twenty-hour days instead of the twenty-four of the old worlds. So, seven more hours until the sun went down and the city-wide curfew for children under thirteen came into effect. He could dig his way through the castle and come attack the boss but that would lessen the possible exp. points. It would be better to just bring the whole place down and get as much points as he could. The problem was that he did not have a spell that could do that. He could buy one but that would take some of the points that he had currently stored away. He felt like hitting his head. One the one hand spending time with his family before going away. On the other was the points that he had worked so hard to get.

His mother better appreciate his sacrifices.

He brought up the status window and shifted it to the store section looking at the spells waiting to be bought. With a sigh he scrolled down until he found the spell he was looking for and clicked yes for purchase. In the tutorial the spells he had bought had been free and how he missed those earlier times. He would have bought more if he had known then what he knew now.

The transfer of knowledge happened in less than a minute. He closed the window before he saw the experience points that he was missing.

"[Earthquake.]" Danny said as he planted his fists on the ground and watched as the castle started to crumble down with the pillars falling inwards and the archers falling to the ground. He would check later the amount of exp he earned from this tactic, but it would probably not be enough given how mean the game could be. He just hoped the rewards from the quest that he was on would more than make up for it.

A sign signaling the boss fight has been activated appeared over the ruins of the castle as the bricks were shattered into pixels and a body became visible. The joker was human size wearing its standard outfit. A white shirt that had a diamond on the left, a heart on the right, a spade on the back left, and a club on the back right. The shirt only reached to the middle of its stomach showing a pinking shirt underneath that explained the pink collar at the top. It had an actual face with tattoos of a star and a tear drop on different sides of its face.

Joker

LV 10

"It's party time clown." Danny said as he faced down his opponent. Before he had reached level 12 the boss of this dungeon had been a challenge but now given enough time the face card monsters were just like fighting the five plus.

The joker threw a card at him that he dodged with a simple turn and watched as it buried itself in the ground. Those cards were endless and very sharp. For a normal person without magic in his village it would take about three minutes for a person to die and that was if they were truly lucky. For him if he did not fight back, it would take around an hour.

"[Snap Trap.]" Danny said holding out his hand as vines rose from the ground to bind the Joker up and prevent it from moving. Now that it was bound it was time to take some aggression out it.

"[Double Spell.]" Danny said and once the spell activated, he started with a [Hyperstride] while following with a [Power Punch]. He knew that the spell would only last for twenty seconds and so he had to start moving fast. The spell holding the joker was not that strong so the first punch sent the Joker flying but with the enhanced speed he could keep track of where it was going.

The monster was destroyed one second before the spell ended. As the boss was destroyed the grassy plains returned to their original setting of pure white. In front of him was the status screen showing the loot that he had won from the dungeon. It had long been set to auto loot so that way he did not have to deal with paying attention to it while he was fighting.

Not as bad as it could have been but still, he had been so close to breaking through. His feelings were only made worse when a screen popped up in front of his face with a frowning emoticon.

"I wish you were a person. Then I could kill you and be free. Probably get some experience points out of it." Danny muttered to himself. Looking at the rewards for clearing the dungeon he had gotten 23 silver coins and a couple potions to restore health and mana.

'[Instant Dungeon Escape.]" Danny said as the area around him shattered, and he found himself back in the forest around the village.

"Leonard said you wanted to see me?" Danny asked as he walked through the door of Vlad's study. On the walls were portraits of their ancestors. Their eyes moved to watch him with frowns on their faces. It was not hard for him given that most portraits in the houses of nobility were enchanted to be able to move freely in their own portraits and those connected with the house. Vlad loved talking to them given that they were as stuck up as him.

"I know that I have told you to knock before entering." Vlad said as he took a seat in front of the man.

The first time Vlad summoned him here he tried playing a power move and wait for him to get nervous and start talking first but he had been unprepared for his son to ignore him and just explore the room. Eventually Vlad got impatient and started talking. It had gone similar ever since so Vlad always tried to get the first word and throw him off balance.

That did not work either.

"I am sorry I forgot." Danny said as he took a seat watching the man behind the desk.

Vlad Masters

Rank: Baron

Vlad was one of the stronger people in this village. He had spent a few years in the army before moving to the reserve list. Now he spent most of his time now talking with the other nobles and taxing money from the poor people living in the village. He did not know how Vlad found joy in such actions, but he felt that it was kind of boring. There was so much to explore and discover in this world.

"We need to talk." Vlad said as his hands came together like a villain in an English spy movie.

"About what?" Danny asked.

"You are going away soon. We need to talk about your behavior." Vlad said.

"I am sad that you do not have faith in me. I will be on my best behavior." Danny said as he placed his hand over his heart.

"That is what troubles me. Your definition of best behavior and what society accepts as good behavior is not the same." Vlad said.

"What are you worried about?" Danny asked.

"Vocans will be filled with children from other noble families and royalty. I want you to be careful and not make enemies that could bring trouble to us." Vlad said.

"You speak as if you do not trust me to control myself." Danny said as he wiped an imaginary tear from his eye.

"Should we go over your history with the few noble children you have met?" Vlad asked in an annoyed tone.

"I say we just let the past stay in the past." Danny said with a nod while the painting above him started scoffing in annoyance.

One day he was going to see if he could find some place to bury them. Probably in some sinkhole or patch of bog where no one would find them.

"How about you try and stay away from the Malfoys." Vlad said causing him to get a scowl on his face.

The Malfoys are a family that held the rank of Duke the highest rank possible unless one was in the royal family. The heir of the Malfoy family was a blond boy named Draco. He was an arrogant kid that he had run into when his father took the family to the capital city Katolis. The kid had tried to mess with him under the reasoning that he did not have the ability to use magic. It made messing with him easier since he could not be blamed for the strange things that were happening to him.

He knew they would see each other at the school and had been making a list of pranks to victimize him with.

"I was not the one that introduced us to each other, and he always comes to find me." Danny said as he sidestepped the issue.

"That was neither a yes I understand nor is it an I will obey you father." Vlad said easily catching on to what he was doing.

"I cannot promise as I cannot say what he will do but I can try." Danny said as he wondered how he could get around this restriction. He could still mess with the kid he could just not do it openly.

Before anything else could be said there was a knock at the door.

"Who is it?" Vlad asked.

"Benjamin my Baron." A voice called out from the door.

"I am busy right now." Vlad said implying that unless it was important the servant should go away.

"Apologies Baron Masters but you instructed that you wanted to be informed when Baroness Jasmine arrived." Benjamin said.

The annoyance on Vlad's face disappeared when he heard that his favorite child was here. Jazz to popular belief was the talented child in the family. She graduated Vocans at the top of her class and had beaten the record of missions accomplished during her time at the institute. She could use magic since she was seven whereas he did not show the ability until he was ten. A few years later than most noble children showed the ability. Most had believed that he was probably a squib.

It was also a reason why Vlad was so distant with him. He was more than willing to let them believe it. As soon as his eleventh birthday passed, and he was not invited to Vocans that he would go on and explore the world he was in. Things did not turn out that way though. Eventually he got a little careless and that was how he wound up in this situation.

"Tell her to come in." Vlad commanded of the young servant on the other side.

"Very well my Baron." Benjamin said before walking away.

"Where were we?" Vlad asked himself. If he was leave himself like that then it was only fair to take advantage.

"How you loved me and were going to cut me some slack." Danny said with a grin full of boyish charm.

"No what I was going to say was do not make a fool of the family." Vlad said.

"Father please do not be so hard on Danny." Jazz said as she came into the room. Her red hair was shorter than the last time he saw her, but she still wore her blue bandanna. She had also leveled up from her previous level six.

"How have you been little brother?" Jazz asked as she wrapped him in a hug.

"Alright just getting another lecture on responsibility." Danny answered.

"Are you listening or just hearing words?" Jazz asked.

"Do I get no trust from my family?" Danny asked as he looked around the room.

"That is not an answer and I see little has changed while I have been gone." Jazz said as he flicked him on his forehead.

"How have things been going for you?" Vlad asked Jazz.

"Alright. I have a mission right now, but I can put that off until tomorrow. Right now, is time to spend with my brother before he goes off to Vocans." Jazz said.

Jazz had graduated from Vocans and so beyond getting the noble title of Baron/Baroness she was required to joined one of the four squads that made up the army for the kingdom. The Crimson Gryffins, The Emerald Serpents, The Azure Ravens, or The Golden Badgers. They were formed by four ancient wizards and witches that had formed the kingdom. Godric Gryffindor, Salazar Slytherin, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Helga Hufflepuff. The institute was created by a descendant of Rowena Ravenclaw.

Jazz was a member of the Azure Ravens. Most were known for their intelligence and curiosity.

"What kind of mission is it?" Danny asked.

The scale of missions given by the kingdom and the game were the same so he wanted to know what kind of danger his sister might be in.

"It is a simple C-rank. Just a demon in a forest. It is not harming anyone personally, but it is eating all the fruits and scaring anyone that approaches it." Jazz said

"What kind of demon is it?" Danny asked.

Demons making random appearances is not an uncommon occurrence in this world. They found holes in the Ether and appeared in random spots in the kingdom. Sometimes they were small and easy to deal with and other times they could bring down a couple villages before they were hopefully caught. Students of Vocans were taught how to deal with them. Whether they were capturing and taming them or killing them if it was necessary.

"It seems like a simple Snorlax." Jazz said.

"Still, I want you to be careful I remember tales of mission that started out simple but end in disaster because the wizards or witches were not prepared." Vlad said giving his favorite child a bit of his wise advice.

"Be careful Jazz the old man just gave you a death flag." Danny said as he squeezed his sister's hand.

"I can feel the love." Jazz said as she grabbed both of their arms.

"Why did no one tell me that we were doing a group hug?" Mom's vice said gaining their attention.

"We aren't having a group hug." Danny said before his eyes widened as his mom opened her arms.

"No, it burns. Let go." Danny said as the arms wrapped around him but a quick slap to the head by his sister shut him up.

He should have known that he was not going to be able to make it through the day without a group hug from his family.
