Najimi slammed their hands on Komi's desk. "Komi!" They cried. Najimi seems excited about something, Tadano thought as Komi looked at Najimi. "Did you hear about the meteor shower tonight?" Komi shook her head. "What? Why?" Najimi cried. They pulled out their phone and opened something on it. "See? Look!" Najimi held up their screen to Komi. Tadano moved his chair closer to look as well. 'A meteor shower, the biggest one since twenty years, is happening tonight around eleven o'clock tonight. The peak of the shower will be at twelve o'clock so be sure not to miss it. This will be the only one for a decade so be sure to see it.'
"A meteor shower, hm?" Tadano said, leaning back over. "I've never seen one. Have you Komi?"
Komi thought about it for a second before she shook her head. "We should totally go and watch it!" Najimi cheered.
"Well, I don't have any plans," Tadano agreed. "What about you Komi?"
Komi grabbed her notebook, flipped to a blank page and began to write on it. 'I don't have any plans. It sounds like fun.'
"Great! It's settled then!" Najimi cheered. "I'll take you guys out for dinner first so don't eat before you leave!"
Najimi talked a little while more before class started. Tadano handed Komi a pencil halfway through, as her pencil broke and it was too small to sharpen. She only forgot to bring a second pencil that day so she appreciated Tadano's thoughtfulness.
After school, Tadano couldn't help but notice that Komi seemed excited. He figured it was the meteor shower but he didn't ask. "Hitohito! Welcome home!" his mom greeted as he entered the house.
"Thanks!" He took his shoes off and put his bag on the table. "Mom? Do you mind if I go out with a few friends to watch the meteor shower?"
"Of course not!" she exclaimed. "I loved watching the meteor showers as a kid so I'll let you go! Just make sure you eat."
"I will, mom, thanks."
Komi entered her home to be greeted by her mom's hug. "My Shouko! How did school go?" Komi stared at her mother. She pulled out her notebook and wrote something on it. 'It was fun today.' Her mother smiled. "That's great, Shouko!"
'Can I watch the meteor shower today?'
"With friends?" her mom checked.
'Yes.'
"Then go right on ahead! Do you want me to make dinner for you before you go?" Komi shook her head. "Alright then! I hope you have fun, Shouko!"
A few hours later, Najimi rang the doorbell. Komi ran downstairs, almost tripping on the way. She opened the door. "Are you ready, Komi?" Tadano asked. She nodded. "Great! Let's go get some grub and watch the stars!" Najimi cheered. Komi put her shoes on before she left the house. "We should totally eat at that ramen place again," Najimi said, dancing.
"Are you sure?" Tadano asked. "The meals are kinda big and it's a little expensive."
"I got this!" Najimi said. "I'll pay for it all and no one will get sick, not like the first time anyway. We've been going every week!"
"What do you think, Komi?" Tadano doesn't want to exclude Komi. Najimi forgets sometimes and feels really bad for it. Komi nodded after pausing for a moment. "Great! It's settled then!"
Thankfully, after all the times they've gone, they've all gotten quite used to the rules. Najimi hasn't gotten the 'no talking' rule down quite yet, but it hasn't gotten them kicked out yet. As always, Tadano watched Najimi make the longest order in the world. How do they even remember what they want all the time?
Najimi had managed to eat the whole bowl this time. Tadano and Komi ate half of it, which is more than last time. As they left, Komi began to write on her notebook. 'Thank you for dinner, Najimi.'
"Of course! Anytime!" Najimi sang, twirling in a circle. Tadano checked his phone for the time. Two minutes until eleven. We have to find a good spot to watch it.
"Oh, geez," Najimi said, stopping. "I completely forgot!"
"Forgot what?" Tadano asked. "I have to help mom make a meal for a family reunion tomorrow. I was supposed to help her at ten but I forgot." Najimi turned around. "I'm booked, sorry guys!" They ran off.
Why do I always feel like Najimi leaves on purpose? Tadano thought as he watched Najimi leave. He turned to Komi. "Well, I guess it's just the two of us then, huh?" Komi looked at him and he smiled. "Still want to watch it?"
Komi nodded. "Alright. We'll go find somewhere to sit." They entered the park, but found no luck on the lower ground. "Hmm, nowhere to sit here," Tadano mumbled. Komi tapped his shoulder, getting his attention. She pointed at a hill nearby. "Up there?" She nodded. Tadano followed Komi to the top of the hill where, sure enough, there was no people. Just one or two families but that's about it. "Nice spot, Komi!" As they sat down, one of the families kid started to cry. "Aww, it's okay, honey," the mom said.
"I think it's time for bed," the father said.
"Yeah, you're right." The family walked off the hill. The other group walked off but Tadano didn't catch why. Is this a setup? he thought as him and Komi are the only ones remaining on the hill. Komi tapped Tadano's shoulder and pointed up. "Did it start?" he asked. She nodded.
Tadano looked up. He's always wanted to see a meteor shower in person. He's watched plenty online but...it's different than actually being there. A meteor whizzed past. It's beautiful, he thought, as more zoomed past. "Komi, aren't they pretty?"
He looked at Komi, who nodded. He looked back up at the sky again. Of course, nothing is as beautiful as Komi, Tadano though. He glanced at Komi, who just continued to stare at the sky, unaware that Tadano is looking at her. He looked back up. They both continued to watch the meteor shower for a while.
They sat there for an hour before Tadano decided it was best to go home. "Komi? You ready to head home?" No answer. He looked next to him to see Komi fast asleep. "Komi?" he tried again. Still, nothing. I guess I have to take her home then.
Tadano shuffled until Komi was behind him. He picked her up on his back and walked down the hill, slowly. He didn't want to loose his balance. Plus, Komi's a little heavier than he expected. "Alright, let's take you home, Komi."
He slowly walked towards Komi's house. Komi moved on his back but she didn't wake up. "Almost there, Komi." Tadano adjusted Komi as she began to slip off. He stopped in front of her house. He adjusted Komi again and held her up with one hand as he knocked on the door. He waited for someone to open the door, and was greeted by Komi's mom.
"Ah, Tadano! How did it go?"
"It was a lot of fun!" Tadano replied, smiling. "Except, Komi fell asleep."
She peeked around Tadano to see Komi fast asleep. "Aww, thank you for bringing her home, Tadano."
"Of course!" Tadano replied.
Tadano handed Komi to her mother, who took her and put her on the couch. "See you!" Tadano said as he began to walk off.
"Hey, Tadano! Hold up a second!" Tadano stopped. "Yeah?"
"Shouko really appreciates you!"
"Huh?"
"I mean, she really likes you! She tells me all sorts of things that you guys did together and that giant cat you guys got her for her birthday? She likes that too! Sometimes I go in to see her hugging it. She says she knows that it's from you and she's always wanted to thank you for it!" Tadano stood there, thinking. She likes that we're friends? That's...that's good!
"Thank you, for being there for Shouko, Tadano."
"Of course! She's a wonderful person!"
"I'm glad to hear that!"
Tadano waved goodbye again and walked home. He stayed in a good mood for the rest of the week.
