Lily was along with her friends and the Marauders in the Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade. After much coaxing from her friends, she agreed to come with them to Hogsmeade, thinking it would be good to go out and to not think about the previous things.
After having a nice lunch at the Three Broomsticks, they separated in pairs and began exploring the village. James and Lily were one of the pairs and were walking along the road, looking at the various shops. During this, they saw Harry and Ginny near Honeydukes, laughing at something. Both James and Lily saw that Harry's arm was around Ginny's shoulder while her arm was around his waist. Harry and Ginny then saw James and Lily and waved at them. James and Lily waved back and began going towards them.
Suddenly, Harry and Ginny suddenly started feeling cold. They saw the village slowly getting darker and gloomy. This sudden change meant only one thing, and both Harry and Ginny didn't like the implications, for the only reason such a sudden change could occur was due to the presence of dementors. They quickly pulled their wands and went towards James and Lily. Ginny used Sonorous on herself and told everyone to run back to Hogwarts. During this, they saw the dementors coming from the mountains surrounding Hogsmeade. She and Harry casted the Patronus charm and her horse ad his stag galloped out of their wand and went towards the dementors. Harry told James and Lily, "Both of you are good at the charm. Find as many students as you can and send back towards Hogwarts. Use the secret passage in Honeydukes. And when you reach Hogwarts, ask the professors to quickly come here. Now go." James and Lily nodded and the began doing what Harry asked them to do. He and Ginny meanwhile began casting the charm again and again, trying to push back as many dementors as they could.
James and Lily found their friends and told them what Harry had told them to do. They all began casting the charm, but the presence of dementors meant they were only able to get the shield. Using them, they began leading the students to Hogwarts. They tried holding the charm as long as they could, but the they were getting tired from using the spell and dementors were still coming. They finally reached the gate. They saw the professors running towards the village. James and Lily quickly told professor McGonagall that Harry and Ginny were still in the village and were protecting the Hogsmeade residents. McGonagall nodded and made her way towards the village.
James went inside the gate and Lily was going to follow him. But she saw a dementor grab a small girl and was about to suck her soul out. Lily knew that she needed to get a corporal Patronus to save the girl. Thinking about all the happy moments she had with her friends, thinking how they had been her rock and support during this time, especially James, who comforted her the most and supported the most, she caste the spell.
A big, graceful and majestic doe came out of her wand and quickly pushed the dementor back, which was about to suck the girl's soul. Lily quickly grabbed her and using the last bit of energy, ran inside the castle. It was only when she reached the hospital wing and was given some chocolate by Madam Pomfrey that she realized that she had gotten her Patronus, a doe. Being as tired as she was, she didn't realize that her Patronus was the female version of James's Patronus. Her doe to his stag. But when she would think about this moment later, she would realize that it was the thought of James that made her get her first corporal Patronus, despite being as tired as she was and as scared and terrified as she was.
Harry and Ginny meanwhile were still in Hogsmeade, casting and holding their patronuses as long as they could. They were tiring as the charm was taking its toll. The dementors were still there and were slowly coming towards them. They needed to do something to stop them. Others were trying to use the charm. But the despair from the dementors was making it hard for them to use the spell. There was one last thing that Harry could do. He quickly pulled the moleskin pouch that Hagrid had gifted him. There were a lot of things inside it that were dear to him. He quickly pulled out a wand which he had wished he would never have to use. But right now, it was the only chance they had to stop the dementors. Taking the elder wand in his hand, he grabbed Ginny's hand with his other, telling her, "Ginny, think all your happiest moments. Let it fill you up. Then cast the spell with me." Ginny nodded. Together they casted the spell with the elder wand.
A huge silver phoenix came out of the wand. The phoenix was bigger and brighter than any Patronus they had ever seen. It looked very similar to Fawkes. It quickly flew towards the dementors and pushed them back. It was joined by other patronuses of the professors. Casting the Patronus charm for so long had finally took its toll on Harry and Ginny, as they fell down, bone tired and feeling very weak. They saw Dumbledore coming towards them. Harry quickly placed the wand back inside his pouch.
Dumbledore saw how tired Harry and Ginny were. It was to be expected as they had held the Patronus charm for nearly 30 minutes. He quickly made a portkey and gave it to them. He told them, "It will take it to your quarters. Take rest. I will talk with you later." He then activated it. Harry and Ginny didn't even give a protest. As soon as they reached their quarters, they collapsed in their beds together.
