Author's Note: Sorry this took a while. This chapter has an original story, and it turns out to take a while. Anyway, I managed to write this down and I'll return to the canon story next chapter. Now, it's important to note that this chapter takes about the same time as the body swap episode.
Another announcement. You're all probably wondering about my plans for this story and the rest of my Marvel/Disney Channel shows crossover fics. Well, I came up with a system. I'll be doing a cycling order. First on the list is the Owl Sanctum. After that, we've got the Black Panther of Amphibia, Iron Hero 7, The Ghost, the Trickster, and Molly McGee, Howard's Ducktales, Marvel Falls, and America and Star vs the Forces of Evil. Once I'm done with all that, I'll restart the system and go in the same order. So after this, I'll be moving onto the next chapter of the Black Panther of Amphibia.
I thank you for your patience. Enjoy the story. Any and all comments are welcome.
After packing the necessary essentials into his backpack, Stephen Strange was about to leave the Owl Sanctum. But as he opened the door, he was surprised to see Clea and Wong standing on the front porch.
"Whoa. Guys. What are you doing here?" Stephen asked.
"I'm here to give you your daily hand check-up." Clea said.
"And I've got to talk to Eda about this human device she sold me." Wong held up a red fidget spinner which he spun. "What's it's purpose?"
"Well, you're a tad too late, Wong." Stephen said. "Eda went with Luz and King to the bazaar to sell more human junk. Probably going to get themselves in trouble in a very creative way this time."
Clea's eyes caught the backpack that Stephen was wearing. "And you're going to join them?"
Stephen's eyes widened as he answered nervously, "Uh… Well…"
"Hoot, hoot!" Hooty called out from the doorway. "Actually, Stephen's off to find treasure in that magic book he found at the library. OW!" Stephen punched him in the face.
"What magic book in the library?" Wong asked curiously.
Stephen sighed before giving in. He opened up his backpack and pulled out his notebook which Wong was surprised to see.
"Is that the book that keeps showing up at the public library? How did you get it out?"
"Well… it turns out, it needed someone to read it… during the Wailing Star."
Wong's eyes flared. "You were in the library after hours? Strange, that is dangerous!"
"Yeah, you tell me know." Stephen said. "By the way, it would have been nice to know that the Wailing Star brings books to life."
"It doesn't matter." Clea said. "What's with the notebook?"
Stephen opened it up revealing the entries and sketches inside. "As it turns out, this book was written in by the Ancient One."
"Whoa! You mean THE Ancient One?" Clea asked. "I thought she was just a myth."
"Oh, she's real." Stephen said. "She wrote in this journal about locations of secret treasures and relics she hid around the Boiling Isles. She hoped that someone would find them using this journal as a guide. Today, I've decided to retrieve the first relic: the Sling Rings. According to this book, they have the ability to open portals to basically anywhere in the realm."
"I've read about these." Wong said. "Emperor Belos declared Sling Rings to be remnants of wild magic and ordered them all destroyed."
"Well, according to this, he missed a few." Stephen said. "This journal says that there is a small box of Sling Rings hidden at a place called the Femur."
Both Wong and Clea widened their eyes. The latter cried out, "Whoa! You can't go the Femur alone? It's too dangerous!"
"Why? What's at the Femur?"
"That's the thing. No one knows." Clea answered. "The Femur is a fractured bone of the Titan that's sticking out of its flesh. Many brave witches go to explore this monument, but only a few ever return with news of their companions disappearing in a blink without a trace. They were never heard from again."
"Yikes." Stephen said nervously. "That does sound bad."
"You have to let us come with you." Wong said. "There's safety in numbers, you know."
Stephen shrugged. "I suppose it couldn't hurt."
"Ooh! Can I come too?" Hooty asked excitedly.
"No!" Stephen yelled. "Just go… play in the mud or something." He walked away from the Owl Sanctum with his friends. Hooty excitedly rolled around in the mud.
It was a long hike into the forest, but despite the pushes and bugs that bothered the trio, they stopped when they came across a large, old, white structure erecting higher than most of the trees.
"Is that…"
"That's right, Stephen." Clea said. "Welcome to the Femur."
"It's important that we maintain caution." Wong said. "Any one of us could disappear forever."
"Thanks for the tip, Librance." Stephen said. "I think we'll be fine."
"So Stephen," Clea said, "What does that book say about where to find the Sling Rings.
Stephen cleared his throat and opened the journal. He read aloud the inscription. "To seek the prize and the magic it will provide, find the door that will take you inside. Getting in the Femur is the easy task, but how to get out is a good question to ask. Just allow your prize to open the next door, or else you won't see the light of day anymore."
"That's pretty eerie." Clea said. "So the rings are inside, and we'll need is to find the door."
"But there is no door. It's a giant bone." Wong pointed out.
"It has to be somewhere." Stephen said. "We'll have to circle the Femur until we find a way in. Wong, you circle the left side. Me and Clea will take the other side."
Wong's face lowered. "Sure. You two get to stick together while I'm wandering alone where people tend to disappear."
"Well, would you rather go alone or go back and get Hooty for a partner?" Stephen asked. Wong didn't answer. "Well?"
"I'm thinking." Wong said followed by a sigh. "All right. I'll go left."
"All right. If we can't find a door by the time we all meet at the other side, we'll have to think of another way in." Stephen said.
After only a kilometer of circling, Stephen groaned and clenched his hands tightly. Clea noticed and freaked out before running towards Stephen. She took his hand and circled around it.
"I'm sorry. That's my bad. I forgot to treat your hands before we left the Owl Sanctum." Clea said apologetically.
"It's fine." Stephen sighed as the strain ended. "I can handle a little pain if we're going to find those stinking rings."
Once Clea was done treating the hands, she looked at him with curiosity. "Can I ask something?"
"Sure."
"Why are you doing this?"
Stephen raised an eyebrow. "Say what?"
"Following the clues in that journal. Looking for Sling Rings in a dangerous part of the Isles. Why are you going out of your way for this? You don't even like magic."
"I never said I didn't like magic."
"Well, you don't really show a lot of enthusiasm for it. The only reason you're tolerating magic is because you need my healing to help you with your hands. So why are you going this far for some magic that has nothing to do with you?"
Stephen took a deep breath looking for an answer. "Honestly, I don't know. It just… feels like something I have to do. Some wise person told me that if I only focused on my hands, the world would be lesser for it. And it's not like I hate magic. It's just a little hard to enjoy it when my life is in danger on a daily basis. Flesh-eating pixies. Boiling rain. My own host is cursed to turn into a monster if she doesn't take a potion regularly. Frankly, the least dangerous things I've seen so far are those school bullies. It's actually quite hard trying to take control of anything."
"Well, there's your problem. You try too hard." Sure, this place can be a challenge to live in, but we witches didn't make it this far by trying to control everything. We just learned to manage with it. Next time, try just, you know, rolling with it."
"Rolling with it." Stephen repeated softly.
"Hello!"
Wong's voice spooked Stephen and Clea who looked around.
"Wong?" Stephen asked. "Is that you? Where are you?"
"I think… I'm in the Femur!" Wong cried out from what appeared to be the bone monument beside the two. They approached its wall to keep hearing him. "It's kinda dark in here!"
"I don't believe it." Clea said. "How did you get in there?"
"I don't know!" Wong answered. "I was walking along my side like we agreed on, when suddenly, I found myself here. Quick as a snap, I go from outside to here. And there's no doors or windows."
"Okay." Stephen said. "We'll circle around your side and see how you got in. Don't go anywhere."
"You're kidding, right?"
Stephen and Clea walked alongside the other side of the Femur trying to find anything that could help.
"What are we looking for again?" Clea asked.
"Anything that could explain how Wong got in the bone." Stephen said. "You know, like a trap door or a concealed door or…" He turned to Clea just in time to see her entire body vanish into thin air. "Or something in the air."
Stephen approached right where Clea disappeared and brushed his hand at the exact same spot. Suddenly, the entire forest setting changed to the inside of a dark-white cavern-looking area. It was very hollow other than Wong and Clea who stood beside him.
"Well, I guess we found the entrance." Stephen said. "There must have been some kind of secret portal set up at that spot that takes whoever touches it right into the Femur's interior. 'Find the door that will take you inside'."
"Well, how do we get out?" Clea asked.
Stephen scanned the room until he noticed a stone pedestal that stood at the center of the room. And on top of the pedestal was an old, green chest. He realized what it was and went to open it. Much to his delight, there were eight, two-fingered rings.
"The Sling Rings." Wong realized.
"Of course!" Stephen said. "'Just allow your prize to open the next door'! All we have to do is use these to open a portal out of here!" Stephen picked up a ring and put wrapped them around his fingers. "Well, how do these work?"
Wong picked up the chest and discovered etched glyphs on the side. "Hmm. It looks like you use them to wave a circle to form the portal and visualize where you want to go. Circle your free hand around the one with the Sling Ring."
"That's it?" Clea asked. "That sounds easy."
Stephen did as Wong instructed and thought of the Owl Sanctum living room. He waved his hand in a circular motion, but much to their disappointment, nothing was forming.
"Ah, irony. So we meet again." Stephen said. It was then that he noticed the bones across the floor. "Whoa! Guess we weren't the first to come up with this idea?" Suddenly, a realization passed in his mind. "Hold on. Something's not right. Why are the Sling Rings in the box?"
"What do you mean?" Clea asked. "That's where the Sling Rings go, right?"
"But if these guys had the same idea to try and use the rings to portal out, wouldn't they end up next to the skeletons? Why are all the Sling Rings back in the box?"
Wong rubbed his chin. "Maybe it's some kind of magic feature. Or they returned the Sling Rings because they lost hope. Or perhaps the possibility of a…" He paused to hear the sound of a giant footstep heading in their direction. "A guardian."
The kids looked behind them to find a colossal man made of stone. The walking statue had on black armor and carried a sword which it pointed at the kids.
"MOVE!" Stephen commanded. He and everyone else jumped to the side to avoid the sword strike. "What is that thing?"
"I think it's a Black Knight!" Wong yelled out. "Oh, this is bad!"
"Why? I know fire spells now." Stephen said. With one wave of his finger, he blasted a large burst of fire right at the Black Knight, but much to his surprise, it didn't do anything. It didn't even phase it. "What just happened?"
"Black Knights are known for being immune to magic." Clea said dodging the Black Knight's sword. "The only way to destroy them is with physical attacks!"
"But that thing's twenty feet tall!" Stephen cried out. "How do we destroy it?"
"We can't!" Wong yelled trying to get behind the Black Knight. "We're very unprepared for this! Our only chance is to get out! Stephen, use the Sling Ring!"
Stephen took a deep breath before heading to the far side of the chamber. While Wong and Clea were struggling to stay alive, he held out his hands and attempted another portal. Again, it failed. Over and over again, all Stephen got was more and more frustration.
"I can't!" Stephen cried out. "One of you give it a try!"
"We're a little occupied trying to stay clear of this guy's line of sight!" Wong cried out. He jumped up to avoid a sword strike, but then found himself latching onto the Black Knight's back. The walking statue spun around trying to shake him off.
"Wong, what are you doing?" Clea asked.
"I don't know! This was a bad idea in hindsight!" Wong cried out. "I'm scared to hold on, but I'm scared to let go!"
"Stephen, it's up to you!" Clea yelled to her friend. "It's now or never!"
"But I can't!" Stephen yelled. "I don't know how to control it!"
"Then don't!" Clea cried out. "Remember what I said about control? Well, try just surrendering! Let the magic do its work!"
Stephen closed his eyes giving it one last try. This time, he did as Clea instructed. He focused more on finding the magic instead of just making it come out. He visualized the Owl Sanctum living room while he motioned his hand smoothly.
Suddenly, an orange light flashed in front of him. He opened his eyes and gasped in astonishment as a golden portal opened up. "GUYS! IT'S WORKING! COME ON!"
Wong let go of the Black Knight and ran with Clea to Stephen's direction. The Black Knight gave chase trying to cut them down, but it was pointless. The Owl Sanctum living room appeared on the other side of the portal just as the kids were right beside each other. They all jumped in at the same time to find Eda, Luz, and King in the room with them.
"Uh, did you guys see that too?" Luz asked.
"What's going on?" Eda asked.
"NO TIME!" Stephen yelled. He stood up and noticed the portal was still open and the Black Knight was about to thrust his sword through. "WE GOTTA CLOSE THE PORTAL!"
"Is that a Sling Ring?" Eda asked before suddenly yanking it out of Stephen's fingers. She then put it on her own. "Let Mama show you how it's done!" She waved her hands right and the portal closed just a split second before the sword could get through.
"Whoa!" Clea gasped. "How did you do that?"
"Did you forget that I'm a master of wild magic?" Eda asked. "Still, opening a portal on your own? That's pretty impressive."
"Well, I did get some helpful advice." Stephen said smiling at Clea, who blushed at his comment. He opened the chest he had in his hand revealing the seven remaining relics.
"Whoa! Are those…" Luz asked.
"The Sling Rings. Eight of them." King said. "They're probably the last ones in the entire Boiling Isles."
"And Emperor Belos would probably level the entire sanctum to destroy these." Eda said taking the box. She returned the ring she did have and placed the chest on the shelf. "Which is why we gotta keep this secured and only use them for emergencies."
"Looks like you had a pretty eventful time, Stephen." Luz said. "Believe it or not, we did to."
"We swapped bodies!" King exclaimed.
Stephen sighed. "Of course, you did. All right. What went wrong?"
The three widened their eyes and denied anything unconvincingly. They then sighed and gave in.
"Emperor's Coven." Luz said.
"Mean teens." King said.
"Psycho pet ladies." Eda said.
Wong smiled and nodded. "We've all been there."
