Chapter 01: First day on the Job

Control Center, Rhodes Island Landship

6-hour Morning Shift

5:45 am, March 20, 109X

(5 weeks after Watchtower 33 incident)

PRTS (Landship AI): Recorders Online

Amiya (CEO, Rhodes Island): And that is how to open and record our logs while staying in this Control Center. You can modify it as personal or public information and this icon will delete any file you need. The Medical staff were the ones who use them, but I'm sure you will have good use of it. PRTS can fully assist if you have further inquiries since it has been updated with the translations Blitz-san has provided. It will be slow at first, but will adapt the longer it assist you here.

Ash (R6 team leader): Thank you, Miss Amiya. I will wait for the others here as I start my shift.

Amiya: We never had personnel here that can do many tasks at once, so It is a surprise that all four members of your team… (Shuffling papers) RAINBOW were able to adapt to the landship and assist us in the first few weeks of your stay. It also says here that you have experience in planning and monitoring operations?

Ash: As long as we have our coffee and breaks, this is nothing new to me. What I did mostly was planning with a lot of paperwork for processing before and after operations. Something that your 'doc' is currently dealing a whole day's worth at the moment.

Amiya: Ah ha ha… That he does. So, if there is anything else, good luck on your shift Ash-san. I will return once I submitted this to him.

Amiya exits the room leaving Ash alone with more than a few minutes before starting to work. With an introductory file and written duties in her set of monitors in front of her, she reminisce of a similar place. An old, small air base in the American frontier that Sam Fisher's connections were able to provide for RAINBOW (that was never used under Six's Security memo after checking the base himself). Its command room has similar equipments to this one: a wide 'holographic' table for planning, few LED monitors (2 each) with well-maintained headphones with for radio operators to relay commands, and a wide-interconnecting set of monitors receiving visual on various areas of the landship.

As Ash removes her hat and shades to the side, she looks at the details of her duties for this shift in the monitor. Basic monitoring of the Factories and Logistics operational quotas for the day, should be easy Ash thought to herself. With a click of a button, PRTS announces 'RECORDERS OFFLINE' as she remind herself on her arrival here at Rhodes Island. All of team RAINBOW assumed hostilities as they enter the landship, but instead was welcomed with open arms. Apparently, acquiring personnel from unknown backgrounds were not commonplace here as long you contribute to the company. In fact, they got too comfortable with the mix of cultures that it became part of RI recruitment efforts across Terra. But that also caused tensions in terms of fear of the unknown and items of interest, example is the vampire(?) Sarkaz that is leading the engineering & maintenance department currently eyeing to reverse-engineer some R6 equipment that we described to her once and never stopped hounding us ever since.

An idea came to her as she casually goes to the coffee stand at the left corner side of the room. The blue thermos heating up as various coffee mixes were available along with some crackers beside empty mugs ready to be used.

Ash: PRTS, I have an inquiry.

PRTS: How can I assist you, miss… Cohen?

Ash: At the moment, Rhodes Island is a medical research and pharmaceutical company focused on finding a cure to Oripathy, yes?

PRTS: Yes. It is the founding objective of Rhodes Island.

Ash: And it is currently in partnership with other companies so it can venture out to other businesses?

PRTS: Yes.

The main monitor lights up a map of the known world of Terra, the different logos of countries and companies hovering above different locations. Rhodes Island icon is hovering above the estimated location (no GPS) of the landship along with its course towards a country called Victoria stating that it will take more than a year before we arrive. Dotted lines of various colour appeared and connected to various logos forming a web of connections finished the sequence.

PRTS: Rhodes Island is currently in good relations with more than… 30 companies, trading clans, institutes and independent facilities across all of Terra. This is to ensure that all Rhodes Island's assets are able to do their respective duties safely.

Against prejudice of being infected with Oripathy and being associated with the infected. Ash thought as she sees the Team RAINBOW logo under the High Priority Asset (New) sign hovering below. Returning to her station with a warm cup of instant coffee, she presses the recording button.

PRTS: Recorders online.

Ash: Notify the remaining Control Panel staff for this shift. They will be more than a few minutes late at this point and I don't want to look sloppy on my first day on the job.

PRTS: Yes, miss… Cohen.

All monitors open up as various areas of the landship were presented. All operational rooms were starting to fill-up and shifts were starting to get replaced. A few more minutes and the rest of Team RAINBOW arrives and under her instructions, teach them how to log-in. Their temporary supervisor, Amiya, arrived a few minutes more and started assisting the members on general operations of Rhodes Island. And with a loud ring, the 6am morning shift starts.

It was like managing a town than managing a company as request and complaints started rushing in Amiya's desk, both digitally by the monitors or literally as manually delivered documents come rushing at the table beside the entrance. Amiya's worry of the new members not operating properly at the first day were relieved within the first hour. She was able to continue on her tasks and able to sort the documents before sending it away. She will usually announce warnings at notable workers who were about to make a ruckus especially at engineering and production departments, the rest were general announcements. To Amiya's surprise, Ash and her team were able to finish their tasks 2 hours early and started assisting her on sorting the remaining documents in her desk. That was also finished within a few minutes.

With PRTS announcing all tasks complied for the day and is currently visualizing the status of other departments, Amiya takes her chance and talks to the team.

Amiya: Thank you for finishing and assisting me in our tasks today, it is still too early finish our shift so lightly monitor your delegated rooms. The rest will by PRTS and me.

Team RAINBOW: Yes, Mam.

Amiya always got startled on how uniform they respond to her. Something I need to get used to, I suppose. Amiya thought as she prepares herself for asking her inquiries.

Amiya: Have you all worked in a similar profession before? I didn't know soldiers were knowledgeable in this kinds of company operations.

Ash: Yes, it's is more of akin to monitoring progress of field operations. Just slowed down and less hectic.

Amiya: Eh, I thought you're a combat operator. How were you able to learn many more things… like what you said at the Maintenance teams when you said something about structural weakness in some parts of landship?

Ash: From where we are from, our government or military offers military service at a young age. Once their tour of service is completed, we were given scholarships on our selected universities along with additional allowances if they can provide it. You will also be given seminars based on what position you were assigned, from combat engineers and medics, to translators and logistics officers, during your tour. Mine was engineering, then general criminology after my tour. Then I became an agent for an investigative bureau and a few years later I scouted to this team.

Amiya: And the rest of you? Does your team require such highly skilled personnel?

Ash looks at her team. With a few seconds, all of them nods as if to confirm a silent question.

Blitz (R6 member): Yes. I graduated with multiple credits at Linguistics and Athletics before military. During service, I was transferred to various places and providing modules during collaborative exercises with other countries. Scouted by the team for my skillset.

Frost (R6 member): I'm a hunter before joining the military academy. Graduated as an officer tasked on a search and rescue team for a few years before transferring to a counter-terrorism unit. Scouted for search and rescue, and able to operate in any harsh environment.

Tachanka (R6 member): Mostly military courses on being a mechanic as well as participating on a wrestling team. I was part of my country's counter-terrorism unit when RAINBOW scouted me.

Amiya was amazed at how casual they were able to say they're collegiate graduates and other skills that could land them a job anywhere. Yet they joined various military services and excelled so much that they were scouted to this 'team RAINBOW.' She was a bit jealous for this team's professionals.

Rhodes Island started with Dr. Kal'sit scouting the founding members from BABEL and other places for various skills and professions, but most of their current employees now were medical interns, mercenaries and other personnel that required training. Even their combat operators need to be retrained to adapt for various tasks in and out of combat. Those take time that they asked their 'friends' in other companies for instructors so that the quality of work outside the medical field was above standard. Experts that the doctor somehow able to recruit ever since his awakening were amazing, but they were very expensive to maintain. Their salary and equipment/s they bring alone can cause a huge strain on Rhodes Island's finances if not maintained properly. This is what Amiya and the rest of management knows on handling their growing company.

So… another important question speaks out of Amiya's mind.

Amiya: What is team RAINBOW exactly? I know that you have a written description of it, but it was deemed classified and locked under Dr. Kal'sit's office. What can you tell me about it?

Team RAINBOW was again silent, looking at each other. They know that the young CEO was just curious on what they are. So Ash gave a simple answer.

Ash: Team RAINBOW is Counter-Insurgency Group made under the collaboration of various entities so that we can operate and defend the citizenry regardless of what country we were deployed in. We mostly deal with uncanny groups that operate in more than one country.

Amiya: Like those underground groups from Lungmen? They have connections to other countries too.

Ash: Yes. That is why RAINBOW recruits currently active servicemen from other countries so they can coordinate and respond to any threats these groups pose.

'So Team RAINBOW was formed as a collaborative effort against common threats, I wish such an organization exists here instead of the Contingency Contract Organization.' Amiya smiles as she thought such concept still exists.

She then dedicate herself on learning more about them. Sure, their actual backgrounds were classified but the Abyssal hunters were already a group full of secrets working under Kal'sit. All of them were warriors similar to the local Elite Operator team, but they barely do work at the landship besides combat training and were often arriving battered after some operation. Team RAINBOW allows her to learn new things on how to manage things more efficiently and many more.

Ash: Mam, we have 30 minutes before shift change. Shall we notify the next shift?

Amiya: (startled) Yes! Of course. PRTS, call the announcements for the shift change.

Everyone is starting to clean up their stations as they prepare it for the next users. Amiya notices that she has less documents to bring to the doctor than usual but eventually ignores it. As the alarm finally signals the end of the shift, Ash and Amiya walked side by side to submit their final reports to the doctor while the rest return to their dorms.

PRTS however is still recording as they left, so it prepares it small report before turning off the recorders.

PRTS: First day performance of new personnel has exceeded recorded performance quotas on all sectors. Consistency data still incomplete. Will continue to gather new data on Team RAINBOW. Recorders Offline.

THE RI Doctor's Zero sanity moment:

"Thank whatever luck we have right now! I knew my hunch was right that they were efficient outside of combat as well. I hope the engineering team got severe delays on adjusting RAINBOW's equipment so I can experience this kind of workplace more. It has been a long time since I saw my table without a mountains of documents still need processing coming from management! Everything from the submitted end-shift report was so organized as well that I barely need to do adjust anything! Oh! Here comes Kal'sit! Better be looking busy!"

Writer's zero sanity ramblings:

Since Kal'sit pretty much closed nearly all detailed info about Team Rainbow, I have to make sure that Team Rainbow speak in half-truths so that the CEO never doubted their performance as they do their first day of work. This is going be a recurring problem for me, since I'm going to need check their dialog frequently so they can be understandable to those who were barely knowledgeable by the current Team RAINBOW lore.

I decided to start a series of concepts during the first months of team rainbow at the landship with various perspectives including:

-the brig where a certain lady is detained (if my lore checking is good) talking to a war vet during guard shift while sharing contraband liquid.

-the HR office when someone is correcting himself for proper translations of various languages of Terra with an Angel representative assisting him(subject to change on HR participant)

-A furious one-on-one firefight simulation due to misunderstanding and pride against one of RI's veteran artilleryman… with commentary from various trainers. (A lot of deletes here, currently searching references on proper combat storytelling)

-Kal'sit fighting against her own medical department on their medical findings of RAINBOW operators. Also talking to SWEEP and RI-EO in regards to those who attacked watchtower 33: Volvokotchinski (need spelling correction.)

This will all be delayed since we are busy at dealing with Texas' story by the time I upload this. It will be hard since going to my niche-knights rule, almost all guides were null, but it will be hella FUN!

Thank you for reading to this point and may lady luck bless your pulls.
