Without further ado Chapter 6. ENJOY!
Chapter 6
Violet walked up to Dr. Erskine who had a bottle of Schnapps. "Drinking?" She questioned her brows raised slightly.
"In honor of Steven who is about to become our first Super Soldier."
Violet nodded her head as she followed Dr. Erskine into the room.
"Can't sleep?" Dr. Erskine questioned looking at the younger man.
Steve looked up seeing both the Doctor and Violet. "Got the jitters, I guess."
Doctor Erskine nodded down to the bottle that he carried with him. "Me, too."
Steve swallowed the lump in his throat. "Can I ask you a question?"
Dr. Erskine's brow raised. "Just one?"
Violet sat down in one of the chairs.
"Why me?"
Doctor Erskine considered it for a moment and then sighed before pulling up a chair next to Violet. "I suppose that is the only question that matters." He motioned for Steve to grab a couple of glasses. He held up the bottle. "Made in Augsburg. My city. So many forget that the first country the Nazis invaded was their own." He noticed Steve's look on his face. "I don't excuse what my people have become. After the first war, my people struggled...they felt weak and small. Then Hitler comes with a big show, the marching. He finds me. Hears of my work. You, he says, will make us strong. I am not interested. He sends the head of Hydra, his research division. A brilliant scientist named Johann Schmidt. Schmidt was a member of the inner circle, ambitious, and obsessed with occult power and Teutonic myth. He and Hitler shared a passion for violence and Wagner."
Violet noticed Steve's dark look on his face. She had heard of Wagner before but didn't know the full details of the whole thing. It concerned her that Doctor Erksine was even talking about this.
"German operas about war and heroes. Blood and race. Gods afoot upon the earth." Doctor Erskine shook his head. "Me, I like jazz."
Steve smiled at what he had said.
"Hitler uses these fantasies to inspire his followers. But Schmidt he does not believe in fantasy. For him, it is real. He became convinced that a great power had been hidden on earth and left here by the gods - waiting to be seized by a superior man. And when he understood what my formula could do, Schmidt could not resist. He had to become that superior man." He then went silent, his eyes going down to his hands.
Violet swallowed the lump in her throat. She knew that people like that didn't deserve to be alive and causing problems for others in the real world. It was one of the reasons why she had thought that wars were always a good thing to suppress others.
"Did it make him strong?" Steve asked softly knowing that the Doctor was having a hard time with the whole thing.
"Yes, but there were other...effects. The serum was not ready, but more importantly, the man… The serum amplifies what is inside. Good becomes great… Bad becomes worse." He poured some schnapps into the two glasses that Steve held in his hands. "This is why you were chosen. A strong man, he might lose respect for power if he has had it all his life. But a weak man knows the value of strength...and compassion."
Steve looked down. "Thanks. I think."
Doctor Erskine let out a chuckle and put his glasses on. "Whatever happens tomorrow, promise me you'll stay who you are. Not a perfect soldier…" He tapped Steve's chest with one finger, looking into Steve's blue eyes. "But a good man."
Steve clinked his glass with Dr. Erskine's. "To the little guys."
They went to drink down the schnapps, but the good Doctor remembered something grabbing Steve's glass before he could even get a drink.
Doctor Erskine gave it over to Violet. "What am I doing, you have a procedure tomorrow. No fluids."
"We'll drink it after."
"I don't have a procedure tomorrow." He said as he took a drink of it. "Is very good. I'll save you a little."
"Doctor… I think we should be going. You have to rest and so does he."
Doctor Erskine nodded his head before getting up to his feet. He slowly left the room leaving Violet and Steve alone.
Violet went to get up to her feet.
"Agent Howlett?" Steve's voice came out fairly softly.
"Yes?" She questioned turning around to look at him. Her brows were slightly raised as she looked at him. She couldn't help but wonder what he could want.
"I saw what you've been doing this week," Steve admitted softly rubbing his arm nervously.
Violet tilted her head slightly to the side. So he noticed that she was punishing Hodge when he did something to him. "You've noticed that I've been punishing Hodge."
"Yes, ma'am. But I don't understand why."
"Because." She simply said as she clasped her hands behind her back. "He's rude, condescending, and first and foremost a bully. Someone that I wouldn't put up with. And no one else should either. That includes you. Sure you may be small, but these big burly men don't get it, they used to be that way too." She let out a soft breath shaking her head lightly. "There is nothing wrong with being frail. Because frail people, they can be surprising."
Steve blinked a few times. "You speak from experience?"
Violet nodded her head. "Yes, I do. I may have a vision of health now but as a child… My brother and I were both very frail. Got sick often, but that didn't stop us. My brother is in the army fighting overseas at this very moment and I'm an agent for the SSR. Neither one of us could ask for anything more. And tomorrow you'll be proving yourself to the world as well." She gave him a small smile. "Don't let anyone get you down. You can do this and be the vision that Dr. Erskine has." She cleared her throat. "Agent Carter will be riding with you tomorrow for the procedure. Get plenty of rest."
"You'll be there tomorrow?"
"Yes, I will be there." She said softly, turning slightly to walk out the door. "Just make sure you rest, alright? I'll see you tomorrow."
"Have a good evening ma'am."
"You too, Rogers." She said as she left his barracks. She took a breath through her mouth as she headed towards her barracks so she could get much-needed sleep. She would be arriving earlier than Peggy and Steve and she at least needed to try and get some rest before tomorrow. She could only hope that it would go according to Dr. Erskine's plan. She tried to shake the sinking feeling that was inside of her chest as she went into her barracks. She could only hope that the sinking feeling that she was feeling would go away.
