ACT 2

SCENE 1

EXT. TOWN OF MADRIGAL

TOWNSPEOPLE (V.O.)

(ELATED) Woooooo!

CUT: Beautiful clear blue sky. Flower petals were thrown in the air as playful music and rhythmic clapping showered the town of Madrigal. We PAN down to a FULL SHOT of the town to prepare for a major ceremony. We PAN and ZOOM to various townspeople who were doing anything and everything to make today special. Colorful flags were hung between houses. Flower petals were scattered all over the floor. People were carrying an assortment of items and gifts to be carried to the church where holy matrimony would take place.

INT. CASA MADRIGAL - VARIOUS INTERIORS

Mirabel, now 16 years old, exited her room and observed the surrounding festivities. Many townsfolk are assisting her family with today's special event. The rhythm of nature and the music of the spirits swayed her body. She couldn't help but feel enamored by the festive mood.

MIRABEL

Another beautiful day.

Taking a deep breath, she rushed down the stairs, passing by her grandfather's portrait.

MIRABEL

Morning, Abuelo.

EXT. TOWN OF MADRIGAL

As Mirabel slid down the banister and exited Casa Madrigal, three hyper kids rushed towards the restored house, unable to control their anticipation.

PUMPED JUANCHO

Hey! When's the wedding happening?

MIRABEL

My cousin's ceremony is tonight.

LITTLE ALEJANDRA

What's going to happen during the gift exchange ceremony?

MIRABEL

We're about to find out.

INNOCENT CECILIA

Do you have a gift for the happy couple?

MIRABEL

(teasing) Who's asking?

KIDS

(shouting) Us!

MIRABEL

(laughing) I think you kids need to relax. Besides, take a look around you. The lights, the colors, the magic—all the answers you're looking for are right in front of you. This is a very special moment, and everyone is going to play a big part in it—you, me, everyone!

Mirabel took the children out to the streets, where the townspeople were cleaning and decorating the town for tonight's big event. The music picks up as Mirabel sings.

MIRABEL (singing)

THIS IS OUR HOMELAND, WHERE EVERYTHING IS GOOD AND BRIGHT.

THE PEOPLE ARE HAPPY. THEY KNOW THEY'RE GONNA HAVE FUN TONIGHT.

COME SMELL THE FLOWERS, AND STEP INTO THE BRIGHT SUNSHINE.

TASTE ALL THE FLAVORS AND LIFT YOUR GIFTS TOWARDS IN THE SKY.

WITH A PARTY AS GRAND AS TODAY,

IT'S ONLY RIGHT TO SHOUT AND SAY:

TOWNSPEOPLE (singing)

TIME FOR A HAPPY WEDDING DAY!

TOWNSPEOPLE/MIRABEL

A HAPPY WEDDING!

HAVE A HAPPY WEDDING!

HAVE A HAPPY WEDDING DAY!

MIRABEL

WE'RE ON OUR WAY!

TOWNSPEOPLE/MIRABEL

A HAPPY WEDDING!

HAVE A HAPPY WEDDING!

HAVE A HAPPY WEDDING DAY!

Mirabel and the townsfolk danced about in the streets as the children got absorbed in the movement. Eventually, they calmed down and circled Mirabel once more.

INNOCENT CECILIA

So, Luisa is the one who's getting married, right?

LITTLE ALEJANDRA

No, it's Isabella, the one who talks to animals.

INNOCENT CECILIA

Isn't Carlos the one that talks to animals?

LITTLE ALEJANDRA

No, Carlos has super hearing.

PUMPED JUANCHO

Not remembering who these people are is freaking me out. It's an information overload.

MIRABEL

(taking the mug away from Juancho) Seriously, you need to stop drinking coffee. So, it looks like we're going to need another family roundup since you guys might have forgotten. So, let's give you a refresher.

Mirabel gave the kids a quick tour of the interior of Casa Madrigal. We see a video montage of various members of the family performing chores for the upcoming wedding. Abuela Alma was programming the event with Señora Guzmán. Pepa was happily dusting the house. Bruno was mopping the floor. Julieta was in the kitchen, baking bread.

MIRABEL (singing)

MY ABUELA ALMA'S THE KEEPER OF THE CANDLELIGHT.

MY TIA PEPA'S SMILE MAKES THE SUNSHINE BRIGHT.

MY TIO BRUNO HELPS IN ANY WAY HE CAN.

AND THAT MY MAMA; SHE'S COOKING UP HER TASTY PAN.

Mirabel brought the kids back outside to the steps and the pathway, where Félix and Agustín were sweeping the road, carefully pushing the flower petals to make the path to the house prettier.

MIRABEL (cont.)

WITH PAPA AND FÉLIX SWEEPING THE WAY,

THEY KNOW WHAT TIME IT IS TODAY!

When Félix and Agustín noticed Mirabel, they walked up to her to grab opposite arms and spin her around, prompting the townspeople and the adults in the house to dance along with them.

AGUSTIN/FÉLIX (singing)

TIME FOR A HAPPY WEDDING DAY!

TOWNSPEOPLE/MIRABEL & MADRIGAL ADULTS (singing)

A HAPPY WEDDING!

HAVE A HAPPY WEDDING!

HAVE A HAPPY WEDDING DAY!

MIRABEL

LET'S HAVE FUN TODAY!

TOWNSPEOPLE/MIRABEL

A HAPPY WEDDING!

HAVE A HAPPY WEDDING!

HAVE A HAPPY WEDDING DAY!

INNOCENT CECILIA

But those are all the grownups.

LITTLE ALEJANDRA

Yeah, we want to see the wedding couple.

PUMPED JUANCHO

The suspense is tearing me apart.

MIRABEL

Calm down, you guys. I was just about to get to the good part.

Mirabel walked the kids around town, where the rest of the grandchildren were helping decorate the town. Isabella was adding an assortment of flowers to the balconies of the house. Luisa was lifting large statues in front of the church. Carlos was seen fooling around but eventually helped with putting up flags and banners. Antonio was seen talking to his animal companions and instructing them on what needed to be done.

MIRABEL (singing)

THAT'S ISABELLA. SHE DECORATES THE WALLS WITH PRIDE.

AND THERE'S LUISA. SHE'S STRONG BUT HAS A GENTLE SIDE.

MY COUSIN CARLOS IS SNEAKY, BUT HIS HEART MEANS WELL.

AND THERE'S ANTONIO.

INNOCENT CECILIA (singing)

LOOK, THE ANIMALS ARE RINGING THE WEDDING BELLS!

MIRABEL

BUT THE STAR OF THE SHOW COMES YOUR WAY.

SHE'S HEARING FOR HER CUE TO SAY:

Mirabel led the kids to the back of the church. The music immediately died down the moment Mirabel opened the door leading to the bride's room. Although it was clean and tidy, there was no one inside. While the children looked around the room confused, Mirabel pondered where she could be before coming up with an answer.

INT. CASA MADRIGAL - SUNSET

Mirabel ran up the stairs to Dolores's bedroom and knocked on her door.

MIRABEL

Dolores, is everything okay?

DOLORES

(cracks the door open, still behind the door) No, it's not okay.

MIRABEL

Why? What happened? What's wrong?

The music slowly picks up but turns into a somber, mellow beat.

DOLORES

(raps) UNDER THE SURFACE, I'M FEELING VERY NERVOUS.

I KEEP ON THINKING "DO I REALLY DESERVE THIS?"

IS IT OKAY FOR ME TO REALLY BE THIS HAPPY?

I KEEP ON PINCHING MYSELF HOPING I'M NOT SAPPY.

AM I EVEN WORTHY? DOES HE EVEN SEE ME?

MIRABEL

(raps) I'M SURE HE LOVES YOU FOR WHO YOU ARE. BELIEVE ME.

DOLORES

(singing) THE PROBLEM IS I DON'T BELIEVE IN MYSELF.

I KEEP ON THINKING HE SHOULD MARRY SOMEBODY ELSE.

The music slowly drops as Dolores drops to her knees, crying. Mirabel was conflicted, not knowing what the best method to calm and reassure her was. Soon, Luisa and Isabella walked up the stairs, wondering what the commotion was about. They find Mirabel kneeling by Dolores's door as they hear sobbing from the other side. Although Mirabel, Luisa, and Isabella do not communicate with each other, they knew what the other was thinking. Isabella and Luisa slowly opened the door, so they could be next to Dolores to comfort her.

ISABELLA

(singing) LISTEN TO THE BEATING OF YOUR HEART.

YOU KNOW, DEEP INSIDE, YOU DON'T WANT TO BE APART.

LUISA

(singing) REMEMBER, YOUR LOVE FOR HIM STRONG.

CARLOS (as Mariano)

(singing) TIME FOR A HERO TO COME ALONG!

To cheer Dolores up, Carlos transforms into Mariano to strike a muscular pose in front of her. Antonio's jaguar knocked over Carlos, who transformed back to normal once he fell to the floor. The jaguar continuously licked Dolores's face, hoping to cheer her up.

DOLORES

Alright, alright, I get it. I'm okay now.

Mirabel, Carlos, and Antonio walked up to Dolores, who slowly got up with Isabella and Luisa's help. Once she recomposed herself, Dolores hugged all of them.

DOLORES

Thank you, everyone. I needed that.

MIRABEL

Hey, we're family. It's what we do.

LUISA

You look beautiful, Dolores.

ISABELLA

You're just missing one important thing.

Isabella created a bouquet and gave it to Dolores.

DOLORES

Thank you.

CARLOS

Hey, can we, like, get to the church soon before everyone wonders where we are?

MIRABEL

Carlos, are you crying?

CARLOS

(sniffing) I'm not crying. You are.

ISABELLA

Aww, you are crying. That's so sweet.

LUISA

Are you overwhelmed that your sister is getting married?

CARLOS

I'm just hungry; that's all.

ISABELLA

Right, keep telling yourself that.

ANTONIO

Are you ready?

Antonio extended his hand to Dolores.

DOLORES

Yeah, let's make this a night they won't forget.

INT. CHURCH – NIGHT

Church hymnals were hummed throughout the church. Everyone was sitting down with a candle in hand, waiting for the bride to arrive. Mariano stood in front of the altar with the priest. He was nervous and wondered if Dolores had cut the wedding off.

Soon, we hear a commotion outside. Everyone turned to the church doors. Dolores, in her wedding dress, gracefully and confidently walked down the aisle with the rest of the Madrigal children.

TOWNSPEOPLE

(singing) LOOK, THERE SHE IS. THE LOVELY BRIDE.

SHE'S BEAUTIFUL AND SPARKLING LIKE OUR LIGHTS.

MARIANO

(singing) SHE'S EVERYTHING I WANT IN MY LIFE.

PEDRO

(singing) MI AMOR, HOLD IT IN, JUST FOR TONIGHT.

Pedro calmed Pepa, who was stopping herself from breaking down and causing a rainstorm. The Madrigal children sat on their seats while Dolores walked up to Mariano. He lifted her veil to see her beautiful face. They smiled. Their hearts were beating so loudly that the villagers might hear it.

PRIEST

Do you, Mariano Guzmán, take Dolores Madrigal to be your lawfully wedded wife?

MARIANO

I do.

PRIEST

Do you, Dolores Madrigal, take Mariano to be your lawfully wedded husband?

DOLORES

I do.

PRIEST

(singing) THEN, I PRONOUNCE YOU BOTH HUSBAND AND WIFE!

YOU MAY NOW KISS THE BRIDE!

Once Mariano and Dolores finished exchanging rings and putting them on each other's ring fingers, they shared a passionate kiss. As everyone erupted into a chorus of cheers, Isabella created petal explosions in the sky to decorate the church with an assortment of colored petals. Unable to hold it in any longer, Pepa completely broke down and created a heavy rainstorm outside.

INT. CASA MADRIGAL

Once Pepa calmed down, everyone rushed outside and ran to Casa Madrigal where the party continued.

MIRABEL

(singing) NOW, LET'S PARTY LIKE THERE'S NO TODAY!

IT'S TIME FOR US TO SHOUT AND SAY…

LUISA

(singing) TIME TO SHOUT AND SAY...

ISABELLA

(singing) TIME TO SHOUT AND SAY...

Casa Madrigal opened the door to allow everyone inside. Dolores and Mariano were the first to enter the house.

DOLORES

(singing) IT'S OUR HAPPY WEDDING DAY!

The moment Dolores stomped her foot on the ground, the house followed the beat of the music and transformed into a lively house full of color and glamor. The floor became an open dance floor that everyone danced on to the beat of the music. It brought out an array of food that Julieta made for everyone and clanked its shingles together along with the beat of the music.

EVERYONE

(singing) A HAPPY WEDDING!

IT'S A HAPPY WEDDING!

IT'S OUR HAPPY WEDDING DAY!

MARIANO

(spoken song) IT'S SO MUCH FUN TO SAY!

EVERYONE

A HAPPY WEDDING!

IT'S A HAPPY WEDDING!

IT'S OUR HAPPY WEDDING DAY!

In the corner of the house, Bruno, with a bucket on his head, was dancing by himself with a couple of mice.

BRUNO

(spoken song) LET'S DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY!

One of the rats that was dancing on top of the bucket fell from the bucket to his foot.

BRUNO

(flinching) Ow!

EVERYONE

A HAPPY WEDDING!

IT'S A HAPPY WEDDING!

IT'S OUR HAPPY WEDDING DAY!

As soon as one of the food trays was empty, Julieta brought another tray of food from the kitchen to the table.

JULIETTA

(spoken song) THERE'S STILL FOOD IN THESE TRAYS!

EVERYONE

A HAPPY WEDDING!

IT'S A HAPPY WEDDING!

IT'S OUR HAPPY WEDDING…

MADRIGAL CHILDREN/MARIANO

(singing) IT'S OUR HAPPY WEDDING…

Mirabel ran up the stairs to the middle of the second-floor balcony. She turned and stared at the camera that followed her up the steps.

MIRABEL

(singing) IT'S OUR HAPPY WEDDING DAY!

EVERYONE

(shouting) YEAH!

OVERHEAD SHOT: Just as Isabella created another petal explosion in the sky at the final beat of the song, Mirabel jumps out of the balcony and down to the floor. As the petals slowly broke her fall, Luisa ran up beneath her to catch her underneath the raining flower petals. The camera ZOOMS OUT as we see more interactions outside of Mirabel, Isabella, and Luisa chatting among themselves.

MIRABEL

Thanks for the catch.

LUISA

Anytime, sis.

ISABELLA

That was a crazy stunt you just pulled, you know?

MIRABEL

Yeah, but your flowers broke my fall, so all's well that ends well.

Julieta, Agustín, Pepa, and Félix were dancing at the center of the house. When Julieta and Pepa noticed that Bruno was dancing by himself in the corner, they forcefully dragged him to the dance floor with them to dance.

JULIETA

Come on, Bruno, dance with us.

BRUNO

Oh, I'm still not comfortable with the whole people interaction thing.

PEPA

Come on, don't be such a sour apple. Come here.

FÉLIX

Hey, Bruno is here!

AGUSTIN

The more, the merrier, right?

BRUNO

Really, it's okay. You don't have to...

JULIETA

Less talking, more dancing.

PEPA

Come on, move that body!

Dolores and Mariano were dancing by themselves, having their own moment, and sharing a kiss. Carlos and Antonio were grabbing food at the dinner table and eating.

CARLOS

(munching) These arepas are so good!

ANTONIO

Here, have some.

Antonio fed the animals that were with him during the party. Abuela Alma was sitting in the middle of the main staircase, watching everything unfold with a smile on her face.
