SCENE 2
EXT. WOODS OUTSIDE OF ENCANTO - MORNING
LOW ANGLE SHOT: Alonso managed to exit through a thicket as he pushed onward. His clothes were wet and tattered from the sudden rainstorm that seemingly appeared out of nowhere. It proved to him that anything could happen in uncharted territory.
ZOOM OUT WIDE SHOT: Alonso eventually arrived at the river spoken about in his grandfather's stories. In front of him was the large cavern that split the mountain many months ago.
MEDIUM SHOT: Taking a deep breath, Alonso slowly walked towards the cavern, hesitant about entering further. He knew of the dangers laid before him from his grandfather's stories. Seeing it in person gave it an entirely different meaning.
INSERT SHOT: First, Alonso picked up a stick from the ground. Slowly, he shakily brought it closer to the crack. Closing his eyes, he poked through the hole. Nothing happened. Opening one of his eyes, he jabbed the stick at the fracture some more before throwing it across the cavern. Next, he picked up a rock and threw it against the gap, seeing it bounce around the fissure without repercussion. Finally, he stuck his hand out, inching closer and closer to the crack. When he felt he was getting closer, he touched the rocky surface. Nothing happened. Closing his eyes again, he took one giant step and put his whole body inside the fracture.
MEDIUM SHOT: Alonso slowly opened both eyes. He looked around and looked at his body. Observing that he was unharmed, he breathed a sigh of relief and continued toward the witch's lair.
SCENE 3
INT. CASA MADRIGAL - FOYER - DAY
After yesterday's grand party, the Madrigal family was cleaning up the aftermath of the wedding. While the grandchildren were helping outside, the adults tidied the foyer. As Bruno mopped the floor, Pepa and Félix, who was helping out upstairs, spotted Bruno downstairs and ran down towards him.
PEPA
Good morning, Bruno.
BRUNO
Hola, Pepa. Hey, Félix. What's up?
FÉLIX
We were wondering if you could look into the future for us.
Bruno stopped mopping, cleaned his ear, and refocused on Pepa and Félix.
BRUNO
(startled) I'm sorry. Can you repeat that?
PEPA
We were wondering if you could look into the future for us.
BRUNO
Okay, so I'm not crazy. You're the ones who are crazy. Do you remember the last time I told you your future was "ruined" because of me, and you blamed me for it? Why should I have to go through all that trauma again?
PEPA
Look, I know what I did in the past was wrong. I'm sorry, and I promise not to do it again. But I desperately want to know about this.
BRUNO
So, you're still thinking about yourself.
FÉLIX
Easy, Bruno; she's really sorry about it. Look, if not for her, do it for me. We're bros, right?
Bruno thought for a moment.
BRUNO
(sighed) Only because it's you, Félix, will I do it. Plus, I don't think Pepa will let me refuse, even if I tried. So, what future do you want me to look at this time? Carlos's wedding? Antonio's wedding? Not Dolores's wedding. We just celebrated that.
PEPA
Why are all of your suggestions for weddings? No, what we want to know is what our first grandchild is going to look like.
Hearing the word "grandchild," Julieta and Agustín stopped what they were doing and walked over to Bruno, Pepa, and Félix.
JULIETA
(excited) Did someone say "grandchild?"
AGUSTÍN
We want in on this, too.
BRUNO
Why is everyone suddenly so eager to look into the future? I thought you all hated it. I heard from the grapevine that you had an entire song dedicated to it.
PEPA
And I'm telling you, we won't do it this time. We promise.
BRUNO
Alright, fine. I admit, I'm curious, too. But don't blame me if your grandbaby turns out ugly. Blame the genes.
EXT. BACK OF CASA MADRIGAL
In the backyard, Bruno created a circle of sand around him and the rest of the adults.
BRUNO
Okay, it's been a while since I've done this, so bear with me if it doesn't go as smoothly as I'd like.
PEPA
Oh, I can't wait to see our grandson. Do you think it will have Dolores's eyes? Mariano's chin? Do you think it'll be a girl?
BRUNO
Can you turn down your excitement for a few minutes, please? I'm trying to concentrate.
Bruno finally completed the initial setup before his vision.
BRUNO
Okay, one hopefully cute grandchild is coming right up. Let's see if this still works.
Bruno lit a candle and placed it in the center of the circle. He entered a deep, trance-like state. The smoke and the sand began swirling around everyone as his eyes turned bright green.
AGUSTÍN
No matter how often I've seen this, I always get scared.
JULIETA
Don't worry, amor. I'm here for you.
Bruno completed the process, and a swirl of energy surrounds them. Finally, things settled down, and an up-close image of a baby appeared.
FÉLIX
(excited) Look, there it is.
PEPA
Oh, look at its cute, tiny sleeping face! I want to smother and kiss it so much.
BRUNO
I will admit, it is pretty cute.
FÉLIX
Hey, zoom it out so we can see our lovely daughter caressing our beautiful grandchild.
As asked, Bruno zoomed the vision out. But it wasn't Dolores carrying the baby in the image.
AGUSTÍN/JULIETA
(shocked) Mirabel?!
FÉLIX
Wait, that's Mirabel's kid?
PEPA
She will have our first grandchild?
JULIETA
(still stunned) No, no, that's not possible. She's only 16. She can't possibly have a kid.
FÉLIX
I mean, she is of age. It's not out of the question that she could have a kid now.
JULIETA
(snapping) Don't even think about bringing that out in the ether.
PEPA
Besides, this is an image of the future, so maybe it could happen in a couple years. You never know.
AGUSTÍN
(tormented) Yes, but I've never seen her talk to boys her own age before. It's not like she will suddenly show signs of interest in boys anytime soon.
Bruno zoomed the image out further, showing a boy around the same age as her looking over Mirabel's shoulder. The two nuzzled each other as they affectionately looked at the baby.
AGUSTÍN (cont'd)
(yelling and pointing) Who's that?!
BRUNO
Sorry, I got curious and wanted to know who the husband was.
FÉLIX
That's Mirabel's husband?
JULIETA
(picking up a wooden rolling pin) I'm going to poison him.
AGUSTÍN
(picking up an ax) I'm going to chop him.
FÉLIX
Woah, woah, easy there, overprotective parents. Julieta, you can't poison people even if you tried. Agustín, bring the hatchet down. Aren't you happy you got to meet your future son-in-law?
AGUSTÍN
(boiling) Son-in-law?! No, no, that's not my future "son-in-law." I don't even know who he is.
PEPA
(staring closer at the vision) Agustín makes a good point. I don't recognize him. Has anyone seen him before?
JULIETA
(peering closer) You're right. We usually know everyone here at Encanto. So why can't I put a name on his face?
FÉLIX
Who is that boy? And where did he come from?
SCENE 4
EXT. EDGE OF ENCANTO - DAY
Finally, Alonso crossed the crevice and arrived on the other side of the mountain. He successfully infiltrated enemy territory without being detected. Swiftly, Alonso hid behind some trees, took out his telescope, and surveyed the scene. Eventually, he spotted the town he believed the evil witch had created as its base and carefully walked toward it.
EXT. EDGE OF TOWN - SAME TIME
On the outskirts of town, Mirabel was cleaning the streets of any leftover debris that littered the streets. She noticed an elderly couple taking out a ladder to try and take down the flags on the house.
MIRABEL
(rushing over) Please, allow me.
Mirabel grabbed the ladder from them and started climbing towards the flags.
EXT. EDGE OF ENCANTO
Once Alonso got closer, he unveiled his telescope and started spying on the town. Although he saw something climbing towards a rooftop, he was unsure who or what it was. Before he could clarify his vision, he lost his footing and slid down into the forest.
EXT. EDGE OF TOWN
Just as Mirabel was about to take down the flags, she heard a commotion outside the town. She spotted the trees parting in a direct line but couldn't see what was bumping into them because of how thick the forest was. Concerned, she quickly took down the string of flags from opposite ends of the houses and raced towards where the rustling of the trees stopped.
EXT. EDGE OF ENCANTO
Mirabel headed toward the scene where she believed the commotion had stopped. As she got closer, she slowed down and cautiously approached the disturbance. Meanwhile, Alonso was trying to get his bearings straight after the fall. He immediately panicked when he realized he didn't have his telescope. Alonso frantically searched for it. Eventually, he spotted it a few meters away. When he tried to reach out, the arm he extended stung him, and he quickly retracted his limb to tend to a potential injury.
As Mirabel ventured around the area some more, she noticed something hid behind the shrubs and bushes nearby.
MIRABEL
(cautious) Hello? Is someone there?
Alonso flinched. Was he already noticed by the witch or her subordinates? Quickly but stealthily, he tried to crawl toward the telescope, ignoring the pain in his arm. However, he constantly rustled the leaves on the ground, which made his presence known.
MIRABEL
Wait! I won't hurt you!
That only made Alonso more frightened. It was now or never. He desperately crawled as fast as he could towards the telescope as Mirabel pursued the jittery creature. Finally, he made it to the telescope. Alonso breathed a temporary sigh of relief. He knew his life was over the minute this stranger caught him. Putting the telescope in his bag and poorly hiding his presence from the pursuer with the low-hanging bushes and shrubs, he hid his body as best as he could. Eventually, Mirabel caught up with the fearful individual and slowly walked toward them.
MIRABEL
(calmly and motherly) Hey, it's okay. Don't be scared. I won't hurt you; I want to help you. Here, can you stand?
Mirabel extended her hand over to the person behind the bushes. Alonso couldn't tell who or what called out to him as the sunlight behind the person blinded his vision. With his injured arm, he figured he had no chance of defending himself if the person in question was the evil witch, as told by his grandfather. Believing he would be captured and detained regardless, Alonso thought it was best to get it over with. Using his good arm, he slowly reached out to her hand, grabbed it, and stood.
Both were taken aback by what they saw. What Mirabel thought was a lost child was a good-looking young man that she'd never seen before. What Alonso thought was an evil witch was an angel that descended from the heavens to rescue him. Both stared at each other, enamored by what they saw.
ALONSO
(unknowingly spoken) Bonita.
MIRABEL
(stunned) W-What?
ALONSO
(snapping out of it) Oh, I mean, your hair. It's pretty.
MIRABEL
(blushing) Oh, you think so?
Both were unable to make eye contact after the awkward exchange. As Alonso tried to hide his embarrassment, he unintentionally moved his injured arm and winced in pain.
MIRABEL
(concerned) Your arm It's bruised. Are you okay?
ALONSO
(trying to play it cool) Oh, this? It's just a sprain. Don't worry about it.
MIRABEL
Let me take a look at it.
ALONSO
No, you don't have to.
Despite his refusal, Mirabel grabbed his arm.
ALONSO (cont.)
(reflexively) Ow!
MIRABEL
(examining) Sorry, I didn't mean to tug you like that. I think this is worse than just a sprain. Let's take you over to my mamá. I'm sure she'll be able to cure this before it gets bad.
ALONSO
(believing her mom might be the evil witch in question and panicking) No, it's okay. You don't have to.
MIRABEL
No, seriously. This injury could get worse. What if it turns into a nasty infection?
ALONSO
It'll be fine. A little rest would cure it in a few weeks. Besides, if it does turn out to be incurable, it'll just get chopped off so I can survive longer.
MIRABEL
(extremely concerned) Chopped off?! Oh no, now you have to meet my mother. She'll heal you up in no time.
ALONSO
(raising his voice) I'm telling you that you don't have to. It's fine.
MIRABEL
(raising her voice) And I'm telling you...
They paused, realizing that their faces came closer during each interaction. Noticing what was happening, they became self-conscious and distanced themselves further, trying to look away while hiding their embarrassment. They looked at each other again and chuckled awkwardly, not knowing what to do in this situation.
FAST CUT: An image of a tall, dark silhouette in a white background flashed before Alonso's mind.
SENOR GUZMAN (V.O.)
(haunting) Do not disappoint me, hijo.
FAST CUT: BACK TO PRESENT
Alonso returned to his senses after replaying that constant image in his head. Taking a deep breath, he regained his composure.
ALONSO
(clearing his throat) Forgive me; I haven't introduced myself. My name is Alonso, and I am a traveling artist searching for inspiration. I had hoped to stay in your town for a few days after my trip.
MIRABEL
Oh, then you've come to the right place. Our Encanto is full of inspiration. One can say it's the most magical place on Earth.
ALONSO
Magic, you say?
MIRABEL
Oh, sorry, I forgot to introduce myself. My name is Mirabel, and I'm part of the best family in the world.
ALONSO
They sound wonderful.
MIRABEL
We may have had our share of bumps and bruises and butted our heads often, but they're my family. I love them, and I would do anything for them.
ALONSO
I see. If possible, I'd like to meet this family of yours.
MIRABEL
Oh, absolutely. I mean, I was about to take you there anyway. Your arm is probably broken. I'll ask my mom to whip something up real quick. You'll be better in no time.
ALONSO
As in a magical concoction from a black cauldron?
MIRABEL
No, nothing that sounds that sinister. Now that I think about it, it's hard to explain. It's better if I showed you. Come on; it'll be fun. Encanto is the best place in the world. You'll love it there.
ALONSO
Yes, please take me to your home.
Mirabel guided Alonso to town, unaware of his ulterior motives.
