Chapter 17

Poland, February 1944

Violet had been ordered by Steve to stay up on a hill hidden by the frozen terrain around them to be next to Bucky who was looking through a sniper scope. She bit the inside of her cheek as she watched Bucky watching for any sort of movements that they would make on Steve to kill him.

Bucky continued to watch the ground where Steve was. He lightly grasped the trigger with his finger waiting for the right moment. He then easily squeezed the trigger and his rifle went off sending a bullet into the man that was trying to sneak up on Steve. He grinned when he saw the thumbs up from Steve.

Violet rubbed her hands together to try to get the cold winter air out of her hands and the warmth back into her hands. If it was one thing that she hated. It was winter time and she wasn't fully dressed in the proper gear to be going out and shooting at people. "Great shot." She mused softly as small trindles of smoke came from her pink lips.

Bucky looked up at Violet with a cheeky smile. "I'm glad he told you to stay up here."

"Why's that, Sagrant Barnes?" She questioned curiously wondering what this young man could've been thinking at that very moment.

"Because I have one of the best sights of one of our best fighters." Bucky teased softly giving her a cheeky smile.

Violet cleared her throat shyly. "Well, I don't know why you would think that."

Bucky got up to his feet. "Did I make you feel uncomfortable?"

Violet shifted nervously on her feet. "Uncomfortable? Why would you think that?" She questioned softly, her cheeks flushing red. With all this time around this group of men, she learned their habits including Bucky's habits. Bucky never liked making people uncomfortable. "If he knows he's making my heart pound in my chest and my hands clammy… it'll make him feel terrible that he knows he is the cause of me being uncomfortable. I wish I didn't feel this way… I hate this feeling." She thought to herself.

"I am not making you uncomfortable?" Bucky questioned, his brow slightly raised.

Violet shook her head. "No, you're not. I promise." She said looking up at him and offering him a small smile.

CAFACAFA

Another victory party was being held for the Howling Commandos for another well-deserved victory over Hydra and slowly wiping them off of the map that Steve had set up.

Violet leaned against the bar with a concerned look on her face. Her heart rammed inside her chest in discomfort. She hadn't gotten any letters from Jimmy in months since something had happened months ago with Hydra taking most of the 107th as prisoners of war. She hoped that Jimmy was alright and nowhere in the line of fire.

Bucky looked away from the group of men he was talking with loudly and having a good time with. He noticed the concerned look on Violet's face.

"You're looking at her again boy," Duggan said as he took a long drink of his beer.

Bucky turned his head, his cheeks flushing in embarrassment. He hadn't meant to get himself caught, not like that at least. He thought that he was being subtle about the whole thing. "Sorry." He said as he rubbed the back of his neck nervously.

"Boy, I can tell you're worried about her."

"She just looks…"

"Concerned about something?"

Bucky nodded his head at what Duggan was saying. "Yes."

Falseworth let out a breath. "I heard her earlier talking to Colonel Phillips. Someone by the name of Jimmy Howlett. She sounded very concerned that there were no letters from him alerting her to where he was."

"And Jimmy is to her?"

"I believe he's her twin brother," Mortia said, shrugging his shoulders. "She always talked about him to us and how proud he would be of her joining in the cause to wipe Hydra off of the map."

Bucky put his beer down and looked at the young woman even more concerned.

"Hey boy, if you're going to talk to her, go and talk to her," Duggan said with a smile musing softly. He had to admit that it was very different seeing the two of them around one another.

Bucky took a breath. "I don't know if she'll want to talk."

Duggan shrugged his shoulders. "Who knows with her? But you would probably have better luck than us."

"Why would you say that?" Bucky questioned his eyes sliding over to Duggan, his brows pinched in concern.

"She's more comfortable around you and the Captain."

Bucky blinked a few times and slowly got up to his feet. "I'll be right back."

"Talk your beer with you, have a feeling that you'll be with her for a bit."

Bucky took a breath and grabbed his beer. He then turned to walk towards where Violet was nursing the beer she had and leaning against the bar with slumped shoulders. "What are you doing over here on your own?"

Violet turned her attention to Bucky and took a soft breath. "I wouldn't want to bring anyone's mood down." She admitted softly shifting in her chair.

"You wouldn't have done that doll."

Violet let out a dry laugh. "I doubt that." She said, shaking her head lightly. "You and the rest of the crew seemed to be happy with everything."

"And you're the only one that's not happy."

"I'm happy."

"Come on Letty, I know that's not true. Your face is solemn."

Violet let out a soft breath running her hand through her curled hair.

"You can tell me, Letty. I know something is bothering you."

Violet looked up at Bucky and saw the sincerity in his eyes. "My brother…"

"Jimmy right?"

Violet nodded her head. "Yes, Jimmy." She took a soft breath looking down at the table. "I haven't heard from him in a while. I sent him a message last month to his last known whereabouts, and the letter came back."

"You don't think…"

"He's dead?" Violet shook her head. "No, of course not. He's not dead. But I'm worried though. He never goes anywhere without telling me where his team is going next."

Bucky slowly sat down in the chair next to her. "You miss him don't you?"

"More than anyone could miss their sibling." She admitted softly. "I know the last message I got a reply from I had told him I was getting involved in the war efforts."

Bucky smiled a small smile slowly moving his hand across the top of the bar to rest it on her free hand. "What did he say about it?"

Violet's eyes jumped from the table to Bucky's hand that was resting on top of hers. Her cheeks began to flush a deep crimson red from the contact. Her heart pounded like it was going to escape out of her chest. She carefully moved her hazel eyes from their hands and to Bucky's face. "He… he said he was really proud that I decided to get involved. Said I was like our mother when she was younger during the First World War. She decided to go undercover as a man and fight alongside her sibling." She lied in saying it was her mother when it was truly herself that had fought in world war 1 with Jimmy, but Bucky didn't need to know that just yet because she knew that she looked like a woman in her very early 20s and not a woman much older. Her heart clenched in her chest as she lied to him. Perhaps Bucky would forgive her for the lie someday.

"Your mother must be proud."

"I wouldn't know. She died a few years ago. Jimmy and I had made a promise not to get in any sort of trouble. But… I guess that didn't work out according to plan."

Bucky squeezed her hand lightly in reassurance.

Violet took a deep breath taking in the very scent of the man before her. She could easily smell the dirt on his boots along with the fresh pine from being outside and the occasional cigarette smoke from the crew that would linger on his clothing and his musk that made him unique to her. She never had smelt a man like this in all her years of life and she was very much enjoying it.

"I am sure that your mother would be proud that you weren't going to allow the Germans to come into your country."

Violet let out a soft chuckle. "You think I'm a US citizen?"

"You're not?"

"No, I'm Canadian. Born and raised. With England already in it…"

"But why were you in the States?"

"Because I was assigned there and Jimmy joined the US Army instead of the Canadian one." She shrugged her shoulders. "And it doesn't bother me. He took the test to be American. I didn't, I only came down when I was ordered by the SSR."

Bucky looked into her hazel eyes. "But you still worry."

"Of course I do…"

Bucky squeezed her hand lightly seeing her hazel eyes go from his eyes to his lips and then back to his eyes. Perhaps he was right on something, perhaps this gorgeous woman was falling for him just like he felt like he was falling for her. Perhaps she was the one that he had been looking for all this time.

This is the end of Chapter 17. I hope that you guys enjoyed this chapter. I tried my best when it came to writing this chapter, but I think it turned out fairly well. I have a new story out that is posted on Thursdays called Centuries. We're going to go and do a deep dive on another story with long chapters and probably an even longer plot. Please leave a review for this story and if you love Captain America and Bucky check out Centuries. I am sure that there will be a lot of Easter Eggs in it for you. Reviews help me keep going when it comes to writing. I'll hopefully update next week with a brand new chapter. Until next time.
