Sebastian isn't sure what to say when Kurt Hummel shows up at his apartment early that evening. He knows even less what to say when Kurt asks if he can stay the night.

It's not often Sebastian Smythe is rendered speechless.

Kurt is curled up on Sebastian's sofa, blanket wrapped around his shoulders, mug of warm coffee cradled between his hands. Sebastian sits in an armchair across the coffee table, warmth radiating through his own mug of coffee to warm his hands.

Kurt hasn't said a word since he walked through the door and asked if he could stay the night. He'd simply nodded when Sebastian offered him some coffee, and stood in the hallway, looking lost, until Sebastian guided him to the sofa and draped the blanket over him. He hasn't met Sebastian's eyes, either, keeping his gaze trained on the floor or the deep brown liquid in his mug.

It's starting to kind of freak Sebastian out.

Not that they've talked much in the past couple months. They've talked some, of course, they work together so it's kind of impossible not to, but really only the bare minimum that their jobs require. Kurt has still been avoiding him, still ignoring his texts. But to go from that to– this, well. He has no idea what the fuck to do. This isn't really his forte.

"So…," he tries, not really sure what else to say so it just trails off in the hopes that maybe Kurt will say something, but he doesn't.

They sit in uneasy silence for another few minutes before Sebastian finally decides that he really does need to put in more effort than that.

"Is everything okay?"

It's probably the stupidest thing he's ever said. Everything is so obviously not okay.

He almost doesn't hear the whispered, "No," that comes from Kurt's lips.

"Do you want to talk about it?"

No, that is probably the stupidest thing he's ever said. He's pretty sure the last thing in the world Kurt wants to do right now is talk. Maybe he should just keep his mouth shut.

A heavy silence hangs over them for several more long minutes before Kurt finally breaks it.

"He told me to leave."

Sebastian looks up from his coffee, blinks at Kurt. "What?"

"He– he–," Kurt tries, hiccupping over his words, but he doesn't get any further before a shudder wracks through his body, sobs bubbling up from his chest and he's sliding his mug onto the table so he can clutch at his chest with his hands as his body starts to shake.

"Hey, hey," Sebastian says, aims for soothing but not quite sure he succeeds. He rounds the coffee table to sit beside Kurt on the sofa, wrapping his arms around the other man. Kurt curls into Sebastian, lets him hold him as he cries, and Sebastian feels so utterly lost in this moment. He feels like he should say something, anything, but everything he can think of feels like the absolute worst thing he could possibly say, so instead he just holds Kurt and lets him cry, and hopes that maybe that can be enough.
