Originals: The New Original (Datherine; Kalijah)
Summary: Set in Originals S1, but also VD S5. Kat's dying, so they decide to make a choice. Let her die human or turn her into an Original like the Mikaelsons. Will Kat and Elijah want it? Will Kat be happy about it?
It was a nebulous night, as Damon drove towards New Orleans, leaving Mystic Falls behind, a human and dying Katherine on her back in the backseat. She'd had a heart attack the night before. They'd been able to revive her, but they'd told him that every organ in her body was failing. There was nothing the doctors could do, but maybe he and those in New Orleans that cared could find a way. If not, they could always reverse the old age and turn her into an Original. He just needed her to live long enough. He loved Elena, but he would always love and have a connection with Katherine. Plus, after the life she'd lived as a vampire, she didn't deserve to die like this. He wouldn't say it, but he didn't want her to die.
A few hours later, he arrived in New Orleans and outside the compound. He then got out and blurred to the back door, knowing every moment for her counted. He then opened the door and gently picked her up in his arms. Then, once he'd done that, he heard a familiar voice.
"Katerina?"
Damon turned around to see him.
"Short version. She tried to kill Elena, so Elena shoved the cure down her throat right after you left. Now that the cure has been taken out of her, every organ in her body is failing. I figured it was worth a shot finding some way to save her, though. She's best friends with Sophie. She also knew Davina back when Davina still had a family," the elder Salvatore explained to him.
"Sophie's dead, but Davina might be able to save her. Let me get her to a room," Elijah replied.
Damon let her recent ex take her. Then he watched, as Elijah blurred upstairs with her.
Rebekah came out of nowhere, standing by the stairs.
"I don't get it. I thought you hated her. How about we just wait for the inevitable, instead? What is it about her that always has people willing to save her? She's past that if you ask me," she commented to him.
"You wouldn't understand. You should know better than anyone though, that you never forget your first real love. Katherine was my first," he said.
Elijah came downstairs.
"Sister, I want you to keep her alive as long as possible. Damon and I will find a way to save her. Even if it means turning her into what we are."
Elijah began to leave, but before Damon followed him, he told the blonde, "If you hurt her or let anything happen to her, you won't like the consequences."
Rebekah watched them go, before going to check on her. She was doing this for Elijah, rather than Damon. If anything happened to her, she'd never hear the end of it.
Elijah entered the mausoleum Davina was in, Damon at his side.
"I need some assistance if you're willing," Elijah informed.
Davina looked at them both.
"What is it? Why would I help you?"
"Because it's Katherine. You remember her, right? She got the cure shoved down her throat. She's rapidly dying of old age. Please," Damon replied.
"Yes. I remember her. I'll see what I can do," she replied.
While Davina looked for a way to save her, they stayed in case Davina found something, but the witch couldn't find anything to help. When she told them that, they knew what to do.
"There's only one thing we can do then," Damon said. "Reverse the aging and make her into an Original."
"I'll get mother's Grimoire," Elijah informed, before vanishing.
"Is that something she'd want?" Davina asked him.
"I know one thing. Katherine wouldn't want to die. She'd prefer survival. And we're going to make that happen, no matter what. Besides, I don't want her dead. I'd rather her hate me for making her an Original, even if she never forgives me."
"I guess you're just as loyal as she told me years ago when we met then. I don't know about now, but she did love you. You came up in a few conversations, so I know everything she did was to protect you from getting yourself killed. She loved Elijah, too," she replied.
Damon was silent, not sure what to say. She always lied he'd thought, but now this witch was saying that she truly loved him and protected him. And hearing this, it brought him to the night she'd told him that she'd never loved him. That had happened less than a year before Klaus had come to Mystic Falls. He knew since that time that she was afraid of Klaus. What if he'd thought she'd lied to him about her feelings for him, when she'd actually been lying about loving Stefan? If that was true, then he'd missed the signs that shown that telling him that had hurt her just as much as him. It made him think that she might've hurt him like that, not because she hated Elena, but because she was afraid that Klaus would kill him. If all of that was true, then he was the biggest fool of the past four years. If she'd just been protecting him, then he'd repaid her by hurting her any way he could, and even locking her up.
"Are you okay?" Davina asked, considering he's gone silent and had looked away from her.
"I'm fine. You just gave me something to think about is all," he assured her.
Once Elijah arrived with the Grimoire, Davina began the spell, as both vampires lingered.
Meanwhile, Kat lay in bed, an ivy in her arm, Rebekah seated on her bedside, keeping an eye on her. And as she did, she knew there wasn't much even she could do. Since Elijah had put her in charge, she'd been getting even worst, if anything. She was pretty pale with slow breathing. She hadn't even woken up.
Suddenly, the blonde got a call from Damon, so she answered it, despite wanting to just ignore it.
"Rebekah, we couldn't find a way that will keep her human, but we've agreed to make her one of you, so Davina's reversing the aging and then she's going to turn her into another Original. It's the only way to save her life," he informed her.
"Lovely," she commented sarcastically. Then she added, "She better work fast, because she doesn't have much time left. It's not like I can do much about it myself. Even if I did want to save her. Replacing organs isn't something I can do without a working hospital. And the equipment I'd need I can't get either. If Davina doesn't turn her into an Original soon, it's going to be all for nothing."
"Well, aren't you miss negative," he commented. "Just see what you can do. Davina's working as fast as she can," he then added, before hanging up.
She put her phone away. Then, when she looked at her again, the aging had been reversed, which she knew meant that she was going to be an Original soon.
When Kat woke up, she felt a familiar sensation. She also didn't seem to be dying anymore. She felt strong and renewed. And looking, she saw Damon seated on her bedside.
He gave a smile.
"Hey. Welcome back."
"What did you do, Damon?" she asked him.
"Not just me. Elijah and Davina, too. I figured you'd rather survive than die, so we agreed to make you an Original vampire. Try not to kill me for it," he informed her.
"I'm not going to kill you for it, but I didn't need this," she replied, before getting up and saying, "I need to get out of here." She was then gone in a blur.
She ended up in an alley by herself, angry that she'd been turned into a vampire. She was so angry that she punched the brick wall, hoping to calm down, but was finding it difficult. She hadn't realized until now that it was harder to control yourself as an Original. She understood now why most of the Mikaelsons had anger problems. Emotions were different on a much bigger scale as an Original, she realized. Sure, she was grateful to not be dead, but at the same time, she also had wanted to stay human. She'd just wished things had gone the way she'd wanted. Despite what Damon had thought, she hadn't wanted to be a vampire again, much less an Original.
She leaned against the brick wall, eyes closed, as she controlled her anger, concentrating on the emotion of love, instead. As a vampire, whenever her negative emotions were getting the best of her, she concentrated on her positive emotions, instead.
After a few minutes, she was under control, so she went in search of a human to feed on, hoping she could control her hunger as an Original. After all, she'd seen the hunger Klaus and Kol had as Originals.
After a few minutes, Damon left the compound to go find Kat, only to find her by an abandoned building. She was vamped out and feeding on someone. It was a lady that neither of them knew. Usually, the 150-year-old vampire could care less if she killed a human, but this was New Orleans. This was Klaus' city, but formerly Marcel's. Damon knew Marcel's rules, having been here once before. He couldn't let her kill the human, whether she was hungry or not. Not only that, but she was feeding so much that he could tell that she didn't have much control.
In an instant, Damon grabbed her by the arm, pulling her off her. Then, as the new Original tried to break free, Damon healed the human with his free hand, biting his wrist, and then compelled the human to forget and go home. Then he concentrated on Katherine, grabbing both of her arms with his hands, trying to get her back to reality, as she tried to pull away while growling at him.
"Katherine, stop. It's me. Restrain yourself. Control. Kitty Kat, control yourself. Don't let it control you," he encouraged her.
After a few minutes, she finally got under control, so he let her go.
"Thanks. I guess being an Original gives you more difficulty than a normal vampire does," she replied. Sure, she was a vampire, but she didn't want to kill any humans. She then added, "I think we should stay for a while longer. I need to learn before we leave."
"You're right," he agreed with her.
A few weeks later, she'd fully mastered control as an Original, as well as her gifts as an Original, apart from compelling a vampire. And throughout their time together, Damon teaching her everything, she and Damon got back together. And once she was ready, they left New Orleans to travel the world. So, their love story continued forever more.
