Shattered (Datherine)

Summary: Set in S2 "The Return" and "As I Lay Dying," as well as S5 "I Know What You Did Last Summer." Based on Trading Yesterday's song "Shattered."

*The Return*

Yesterday I died, tomorrow's bleeding

Fall into your sunlight

The future's open wide, beyond believing

To know why, hope dies

Losing what was found, a world so hollow

Suspended in a compromise

It was a dismal night, as Damon stood a short distance from his sire. A few moments ago, they'd been making out. Then he'd called a time out, finally getting his wits back.

"I have a question. Answer it and it's back to rockets and red glare. Answer it right and I'll forget the last 145 years I've spent missing you. I'll forget how much I loved you. I'll forget everything and we can start over. I need the truth just this once. We have time. See, that's the beauty of eternity."

She stood just inches in front of him, as she said, "Stop. I already know the question and its answer."

He rested hands on either side of her head, waiting for her answer.

She looked at him, telling him, "The truth is, I've never loved you. It was always Stefan." Then, as her words sunk in, she took his hands away from her head, before slowly walking away, hating that she had to lie to him just to keep him safe from the threat coming to town. Klaus.

*As I Lay Dying*

The silence of this sound, is soon to follow

Somehow, sundown

And finding answers

Is forgetting all of the questions we called home

Passing the graves of the unknown

As reason clouds my eyes, with splendor fading

Illusions of the sunlight

And a reflection of a lie, will keep me waiting

It was a dismal night, as Damon lay in bed, dying from the werewolf bite. He was pretty close to dying now, he knew, but throughout this whole ordeal, he'd hallucinated about the past with Katherine. He knew why, too. Despite him hating her for telling him that she never loved him, he and Katherine would always be connected, no matter what. And as he grew closer to dying with each moment, he suddenly felt something go down his throat, though he couldn't move at the moment. He knew it was blood, but he could also feel that it was working the way it was supposed to, which meant that he was being saved.

When he opened his eyes, feeling better, he saw Katherine standing at his bedside, a vial in hand, one hand on the side of his face.

"You came back," he stated.

"I owed you one," she told him, before giving him a pat on the side of the face. Then she left the room, letting him try and decipher on his own what she'd meant by that.

*I Know What You Did Last Summer*

With love gone, for so long

And this day's ending

Is the proof of time killing, all the faith I know

Knowing that faith, is all I had

And I've lost who I am, and I can't understand

Why my heart is so broken, rejecting your love

Without, love gone wrong, lifeless words carry on

But I know, all I know, is that the end's beginning

Who I am from the start, take me home to my heart

Let me go and I will run, I will not be silent

All this time spent in vain, wasted years, wasted gain

It was a dismal night, as Kat, human due to getting the cure shoved down her throat, stood in front of Damon in his living room, asking for his help. She knew it was a risk asking, considering how much he voiced and shown that he didn't care about her anymore. She didn't want to be near Elijah after he'd left her, though. She also would never ask Klaus for anything. So, after a few minutes of Damon realizing how miserable she was as a human, he offered to turn her.

She put a hand on his arm, debating whether or not to try it, not knowing if there were any side effects to the cure. As she did, he encouraged her to drink, but she finally let go and told him, "I can't. Okay? No one's ever taken the cure before. There's a good chance I might never wake up."

"And that would be tragic," he quipped, acting like he could care less, as usual.

"And deep down in that mushy-gushy heart of yours, there's a part of you that doesn't want me to die," she replied.

He was silent at that, not wanting to admit that she was right.

*I Know What You Did Last Summer- Crash*

All is lost, hope remains, and this war's not over

There's a light, there's the sun, taking all shattered ones

To the place we belong, and his love will conquer all

And I've lost who I am, and I can't understand

Why my heart is so broken, rejecting your love

Without, love gone wrong, lifeless words carry on

But I know, all I know, is that the end's beginning

It was a dismal night, as human Kat drove through the streets, having just escaped from the boarding house. Damon had saved her, but Silas had tried to drown her in Damon's bathtub. She should've known that it hadn't been Stefan, considering they hadn't heard a peep from him in months.

Suddenly, as she drove, her phone went off. She went to answer it, but since she was driving so quickly at the same time, she lost control, which caused her to crash Damon's car into a streetlight pole, injuring herself in the process.

Who I am from the start, take me home to my heart

Let me go and I will run, I will not be silent

All this time spent in vain, wasted years, wasted gain

All is lost, hope remains, and this war's not over

There's a light, there's the sun, taking all shattered ones

To the place we belong, and his love will conquer all

Yesterday I died, tomorrow's bleeding

Fall into your sunlight

When Damon didn't get an answer from her when he'd called her, he figured that something had happened, so he went to go figure out what had happened. Since Silas read in his mind that something had happened, Silas left to find a different way to get Katherine.

Twenty minutes later or so, Damon found his wrecked car, which was nearly totaled. He didn't care about that right now, though. All he cared about was whether or not his now human sire was going to be okay or not.

In an instant, he was at her side of the car. He then used some vamp strength to open the dented and jammed door, where he found her injured. He'd already known she'd be injured though, having smelled blood.

He rested a hand on the side of her face, looking at her.

"Katherine, can you hear me?" he called, trying to wake her up, as he searched for what her injuries her. When he did, he saw blood on the opposite side of her head that his hand rested on. He could also see that there was a shard of glass protruding from her lower stomach, as well as an open artery in her leg. He also saw that she'd lost a lot of blood. She still was, too. He was just glad that she was still alive.

He took his hand away from her face. He then slid an arm under her, crook of arm supporting her head, and slid his other arm under her legs, carefully getting her out of the wreck. He then blurred towards the hospital, hoping to save her.

Once at the hospital, he layed her down on a bed in the hallway. He then watched the doctors rush her down the hall, once he told them that it had been a car crash.

Several hours later, he was seated on her bedside, her having been taken care of. She'd be okay, but had to take it easy for a while. She had a minor concussion, while her other injuries would be easy to heal from. He was glad she was going to live, but hoped that she'd wake up soon.

He rested a hand on her right one, before looking at her.

"Katherine, it's me. I need you to wake up for me. Please. Open your eyes," he pleaded.

When she finally woke up after a couple of days, he was thankful. She was just fine when she did, so she went home with Damon. Then, after a few months of him protecting her, they got back together, him having fallen back in love with her. However, she never fell out of love with him.
