Bumblebee got word from Optimus and Haywire about Rockrider's threats. If they were going to hit her with a curveball, might as well be now. Windblade had graciously announced a call to aid upon Cybertropolis that meant the people were needed for a diplomatic input, at least that was the cover, and they were all aware of this.
While he let Windblade do her thing, he noted Shockwave seemed a bit withdrawn. He had always been a recluse, but this seemed different. He was hesitant to break the silence between them as Shockwave studied the Windblade's written speech along with the setup her ambassador had planned to give Rockrider a good nightmare.
"You've been pretty quiet since we first came here, Shockwave," he pressed. "Anything on your mind that you would like to share?"
Shockwave barely glanced back at him and seemed to drop his helm ever so slightly. "Just theories."
"About?"
"I usually don't speak any of my thoughts out loud given I spent over several hundred thousand years alone after the war went dormant where there was no one to speak to."
"Understandable," Bee said with a shrug.
"If the Isle of the Allspark is impregnable by both bridge and ship, how did Rockrider's plan to send both Arcee and Megatron there work? The Allspark was known to be hostile and prevented such breaches, yet they were able to go...but perhaps I answered my own thought. They may have gotten there but that doesn't mean they survived."
Bee gave a genuine laugh, "I'm sorry, have you met Arcee? If anything is going to kill her, it'll be of her own doing."
"As much as I understand that what Rockrider is doing is wrong and that she needs to be stopped, technically we are no longer fighting for Arcee and Megatron when they may already be lost," Shockwave huffed.
That made Bee pause and he slowly lost his neutral smile when it dipped to a frustrated frown. He then spoke quietly, "We still have to try though, right?"
"Yes, we will still try and get them back," the scientist answered with an abnormal softness in his voice. "But don't be surprised if you find corpses."
Scythe entered on their right and quickly gestured beyond the door. "We're heading out to Crystal City. Better hop aboard before they leave without us. Windblade's coming too and I certainly wouldn't miss the drama that's going to ensue when Rockrider gets one nasty surprise of an unannounced visit with the queen."
Shockwave nodded, "I wouldn't want to miss it either."
"There's the ambitious Decepticon I know," Bee smiled.
Tracking the Driller was like finding a shred of hay in a needle stack. The desert portion of the island was brutal as dawn was close by, yet they hadn't made any progress. Bolt didn't even know what to do and that was a cause for concern.
Arcee shivered as a breeze shifted by. "I still don't get how it can be so cold in a desert. My processor can't register that fact."
Megatron just nodded silently. With Arcee sitting on his left shoulder so they could cover ground faster, he took point this time. But even he was beginning to feel the effects of the cold, making him slightly drowsy and sluggish. The horizon, having a very faint yellow on its edge, showed hope that it would eventually warm up. He gave a yawn and rubbed one of his optics.
"You would think something as big as this Driller would be so much easier to spot in sand. Movement or even the sound of shifting. I fear we might just have to come back another time and wait for her to resurface later."
Arcee leaned her head against the flat part of his should spikes and closed her optics. "I would argue that we need to continue on...but I'm pretty tired so I agree."
The warlord stopped walking when he noticed something in the distance. Careful not to throw her off by accident, he gently rolled his left shoulder to keep Arcee awake and pointed with his right servo.
"I don't recall tornadoes being a thing in the desert."
"I believe the phenomenon is usually referred to as dust devils. Nevada sometimes gets them," she answered groggily. When she actually saw the spectacle herself, she paused. "That's...not a dust devil."
The tornado-like spiral of wind and dust moved across the dunes, but one noticeable abnormality was the much more symmetrical wind structure. From what Arcee knew of both tornadoes and dust devils were that they whipped, maneuvered, vaporized, and reappeared under various conditions. This one was doing no such movements. It looked almost controlled like a tornado seen in cartoons with a straight funnel, perfect touchdown and even wind speeds. That wasn't natural.
The desert tornado shifted suddenly to the right due north without breaking or faltering in its structure, another red flag. It seemed to be heading towards a small dot just north of it dead on like a homing beacon.
"Hey Megatron, you ever wanted to become a storm chaser?"
"I'm debating."
"Good. I say that warrants some investigation. It'll wake us up," she said.
He peered at her with half closed optics. "You always have a death wish, don't you?"
She shrugged, "You never complained before."
Arcee laughed when he gave a mocking scoff before running toward the tornado. When they got closer, they immediately saw what the dot was. It was a scorpion-like creature. They were far enough to not be spotted but it was obvious it was about as big as them, and the tornado was double their size but not as big as they thought.
To their surprise, the tornado increased in speed when it got close to the scorpion like missile with a target. The creature could do nothing but raise its tail threateningly when the spout engulfed it then to both their horror, blue streaks appeared briefly among the dirt as they heard a faint pained squeal before the roar of the winds covered it. There was almost the distinction of what they believed was the sound of something being torn apart from the inside.
Suddenly, parts of the scorpion were launched out and the tornado continued on its way. The parts landed near them, part of the scorpion's head hitting a dune particularly close. Reluctantly, Megatron approached the remains. There was no Energon coursing through its veins aside from small specks like the blood had been leeched from it. Scratches of silver were prominent among where its body would have connected.
Arcee shifted to crouching on his shoulder and leaning toward the remains. Gulping, she gave Megatron a fearful expression. "Usually, tornadoes tear apart everything within wind proximity. I've never seen one eat something already inside the funnel."
Megatron turned his head to look at the funnel. "I think we can officially establish this isn't a tornado."
Watching the sandy vortex abruptly do a one eighty to shift towards them out of the blue made both bots widen their optics.
"Uh...run?"
Megatron didn't need to be told twice when the tornado began picking up speed. Jumping across dunes again was not what they wanted to happen. First Dunedancer, now whatever this thing was.
Arcee kept an eye on the vortex as she held onto his shoulder plating. "If any planet we know of has a tornado as a living creature, I'm destroying that planet when I get the chance!"
"If you get the chance!" Megatron shouted back.
"Bolt! Is there any creature or phenomenon with tornadoes that move like living creatures, not weather patterns?!"
"I was enjoying a nap, thank you very much. Why is it you give me such weird descriptions of things?"
"Bolt!"
"Yeah, yeah, I hear you," Bolt yawned. "To answer your question, no. There are no living tornadoes but there are creatures that can create vortexes...though mainly as an attack, not as a disguise. Give me a minute."
"We might not have a minute! This thing shredded some sort of metal scorpion and sucked its blood out like a vampire!"
"Oh, that gives me a bit more of an insight. I believe I know what you are talking about, but I don't remember the name of the creature."
"Hurry!" Megatron said frantically, making an urgent left to throw off the vortex to buy himself time.
Closer, the raging faux storm surged at them with ill intent, not something Arcee ever thought she would believe but then again, the isle was full of creatures she never expected to exist. Killer trees and alien spiders were very high on the crimes of creation list she had going, living tornadoes was going in the top three on that list for sure. The fact that she could hear it roaring now that it was terribly close was even worse.
As Megatron kept running to wherever the tornado wasn't, Arcee unsheathed Dagger Prima and twirled it in her servo when she grew a hunch there was more to the vortex of sand than it appeared. She knew a steady throw wasn't possible but any towards the center of it should do what she hoped.
Timing it, she used Megatron's movement to launch the dagger directly at the heart of the tornado. She thought briefly she had missed when the winds made it look like the blade had drifted but instantly, streams of sand shot out and the tornado seemed to become immobile. Megatron himself slowed to face it as it began to twist and turn, jolting in each direction with what they could hear were grunts of pain.
"You two still alive? Of course, you are. Nothing's killed you reckless bastards yet. I found out what the creature you are searching for is called. Ever heard of a vortekia?"
Arcee snarled, "No, I've never heard of that! What the hell is it?!"
"Vortekias are a Velocitronian species. They use dust, shrapnel, and other fine grains to manipulate in a vortex-like pattern around themselves like how tornadoes form with clouds and air currents. It isn't for protection but rather a show of power. Anything trapped inside its vortex will be paralyzed by the wind speed. The vortekia uses this to its advantage to snatch up and suck the Energon out of its prey before tearing them apart and getting rid of the remains. They are completely blind, so they sense through the wind they create the layout of the land and anything on it, kind of like echolocation. Normally, Velocitronians don't have to deal with them because a majority of Velocitron's cities are built on giant towers interconnected by electromagnetic bridges and speedways. That leaves the surface of the planet itself mostly untouched."
"Okay, then I'm destroying Velocitron the moment I get back," she huffed, crossing her arms.
Megatron rolled his optics and smirked, "You can't destroy an entire planet because you hate one species."
She glared at him in return. "I would jab at the hypocrisy of your statement but I'm more concerned of the fact that we're in a cold desert with a vampiric storm monster!"
"I've changed...somewhat."
The swirling vortex started to slow and as the wind and sand collapsed to a standstill, they were left looking at something even more horrific. Flapping its wings frantically with Dagger Prima lodged in its chest, an eyeless beast with several rows of sharp fangs gave a serpentine hiss. Its backside and the entirety of its tail were lined with thick barbs they could tell were used to wrap around prey and impale them. Its weak leg structure with only two digits and a dew claw most likely meant they weren't good walkers and relied heavily on their flight, but what the legs lacked for basic use made up for with the ability to tear into their prey.
The vortekia snarled and made snapping motions with its jaws in frustration before peering around to search for them, its wings beating to produce wind.
"How does the echolocation work with wind?" Arcee whispered.
Suddenly, the vortekia's head whipped towards them with a growl.
"Don't know," Megatron frowned, "but I don't think blind means deaf. It must have heightened hearing when echolocation doesn't get the results it needs fast enough."
Bolt chimed in, "I see your feed and...damn, that thing is uglier than I thought! It kind of looks like a leech in the form of a creature humans call a wyvern. Wyverntail is horrifying to say the least. Have no clue how to beat this thing. It doesn't say in the texts...so have fun!"
Arcee peered up at the eyeless creature with disgust as it grunted, the sound alone was like it was gargling saliva. "I need to get the dagger back."
Megatron prepared his cannon but looked at her with a raised brow. "You want me to launch you at it? That's the best I can do at the moment."
Given they were already "seen" by it, there was no choice in the matter for they wouldn't be able to outmaneuver it regardless. She repositioned herself to stand on his arm with one pede in his servo.
"Do it."
He gave a smirk before making her hop completely into his hold and aiming at Wyverntail who gave a daunting roar. As soon as its wingspan was open wide with its chest protruding out, he threw Arcee at it. She went a little higher than she wanted but readjusted herself mid throw to smack the vortekia straight in the throat before bouncing off and flipping to catch the dagger. She was perched vertically on its chest as she pulled out the weapon.
Abruptly, the creature recovered, and rows of teeth snapped at her with its limber neck stretching. She had to jump down to avoid being bitten and grab its tail only to wince with a brief cry as the barbs made it difficult to grasp. Some of them breached her armor and spots of Energon appeared to bubble on her servos.
"Damn it!"
The tail of the creature wagged with fury, shaking her fast to where she began to feel nauseous. Then the animal seemed to sneer down at him which became unsettling. Despite having no eyes, she could tell it was viciously glaring at her with some dastardly idea.
A shot blasted its chest, and it gave a hoarse cry as Arcee looked back to see Megatron charging at it. It was enough of a distraction for it to give one final swipe of its tail to knock her off and she tumbled a few yards.
Megatron used its brief stun to ram it headfirst out of the air back into a dune with a huge splash of sand. The hit made Megatron stumble back clutching his helm. It was one of his bolder moves during his run as a gladiator, but he hadn't used it in quite some time so forgot the stamina of it was draining, not to mention the headache at first.
He blinked a few times regaining his composure and brought out his falchion sword. He brought it up to slice the vortekia but it jolted out of the sand and rammed back before flying over him in a rage.
"Megatron! Get out of there now!"
The warlord hardly heard her but looked up to see the vortekia start to spin, whipping up sand into the familiar tornado but this time he was caught in the middle of it. The outside sky was shrouded by the thick contaminated wind except by the eye of the storm where the creature stopped spinning but the storm continued to rage. It stared down at him as he found he couldn't move. The harsh speed of the funnel itself was keeping him pinned. It was an effort just to even move his arm let alone his legs. He was at its mercy.
Wyverntail opened its leech-like mouth lined with a snarl as its tail began to coil ready to grab him to bite and drain all his Energon. All he could do was stare it down in defiance, not that it could see him do so. But then he smiled right as the beast lowered itself to feed.
Arcee appeared through the sandy tornado with Dagger Prima in hand and using the intense gravity and brutal wind to her advantage, she calculated a precise jump to the preoccupied vortekia. Without missing a beat, she plunged the blade right in the back of its head.
An ungodly gasping noise escaped it when Megatron saw the dagger's tip appear in the far area of its mouth with yellow blood seeping through. At the same time, the wind around it slowly died and Megatron was quick to leap to his feet in case the creature tried anything in its final moments. But the blade had definitely impaled the brain of it for its movements halted and it fell to the ground...right on top of Arcee.
The warlord gave a shout of surprise and rolled the corpse onto its side. The beast was much heavier than it looked and Arcee spit out sand. Some of the Energon leaked into her mouth that held a grimace before pulling the dagger harshly out of the creature and pointing it at Megatron. "That's the last time I ever...EVER go near any tornado or Velocitron itself again! What all powerful being or force of nature creates this thing and thinks it's not a crime against all of creation?"
Megatron then smiled, "If you're making a jab at the bot I think you are, we already established that this one of Shockwave's favorite hobbies so only he would know why such a thing exists out in the wild. Just be sure not to tell him about what you've encountered here, or you might see it again on Cybertron one day."
"And once again, Shockwave has a problem! That bot is messed up!" She stood and wiped off the remaining sand that wasn't stuck in her armor's crevices. She walked away scoffing, "Twenty-two pets and Primus knows how many creations. I'm bringing that psychopath's pet Driller's head back and dropping it on his lap."
"You do that. I'm sure he'll be impressed."
Staring at the vortekia and looking at it without the threat of being devoured, it was a strange creature. But like most all life on the isle, it technically was doing what it needed to survive, and a desert was a good habitat for it to nest but also led to scarce food sources. It was only hungry, and they disturbed it. Though it was a wonder how Velocitronians dealt with such a beast when they didn't have sky-high cities and worldwide speedways going over the planet's surface instead of on it like normal. But then again, maybe the vortekia was one of the reasons why the cities were built that way.
"If there are any more surprises in this desert...I don't think my spark can take the paranoia," Arcee sighed.
Megatron patted her back, "Oh, don't be like that. You wanted something exciting in life against sitting on a throne, right?"
"Eh, I might just prefer sitting on a chair for hours than this, especially if it involves monsters that make me question the weather of all things."
"Well then, as a sign of victory, I think at least you should have a trophy to take back and remind yourself that you overcome this mighty storm."
Bringing his sword down on the creature's tail, he held it up with sick glee that made Arcee kind of smile at the cheesiness of the child-like expression. As cruel as Megatron could be, he had a sense of humor where it counted occasionally.
Crystal City was beautiful but underneath its pristine crystalline surface, corruption was tainting it and it had a name.
"Rockrider certainly took no time in changing the city to her liking, huh?" Bee said, staring down at the streets that were littered with propaganda.
Arcee never liked such stuff, pointing fingers with useless information. But this wasn't Arcee in control anymore. Rockrider was doing everything in her power to drag Arcee's credibility through the mud but those who knew Arcee knew that this wasn't what she would have done.
Windblade appeared beside him with a brief sigh. "It's been forever since I've seen this city. It looks...smaller than I remember before the war. The palace seems the same, but the rest just isn't what it was. Maybe this is the leader in me talking against the former rookie air warrior I was when I first saw this place."
Shockwave peered out of one of the windows with little interest. "It certainly held up all these years. Unfortunately, it did look better with Arcee in command. Now these streets look overstocked, if that's even possible."
"Yeah, well, we'll set this city right even if it kills us," Bumblebee replied.
"Might want to be careful what you wish for, Bee," Scythe suddenly said, pointing ahead.
The Crystal Palace was equipped with sentry guns for emergencies, but it appeared Rockrider set them up for constant monitoring of the street gates. That was unethical for even the likes of Megatron to have such weapons out without justification. Rockrider was sending more threats, this time to the people of Cybertron itself without them realizing it.
"Don't tell me she's turning Crystal City back into a caste era city-state fortress. The residents of that regime hated their own city with a passion because of how it forced an isolated system of living from the rest of Cybertron yet fooled anyone on the outside from thinking they were anything but loyal," Scythe frowned. "Crystal City was never perfect, but it became so isolated and greedy after the Council and the system itself became corrupt. I'm old enough to say I saw the recession with my own optics. I hardly remember the few years I knew of where Crystal City was as perfect as Arcee's reign had brought it to be."
That made Bumblebee pause and slowly wag his digit when a thought hit him. "Wait...during the caste system, there were curfews. There was always propaganda and many of the cities were corrupted at that time. I think I know what Rockrider's endgame is!"
Windblade caught on and said, "You aren't suggesting that..."
"I am," Bee said sadly. "Rockrider's trying to place the caste system back in place with herself as the commander. She wants Cybertron back to the way it was."
"Uh, isn't that what led to the war in the first place? The whole 'this system sucks and all these idiots in the Council are making things worse' problem wasn't obvious for everyone? Megatron saw to eradicate the system because it sucked and Optimus helped...as Orion Pax at the time," Scythe pointed out with a confused look.
"I guess not everyone was glad it was gone."
The red and black seeker pursed her lips with disdain, "Well, with that, I think it is the best course of action to change our plan then to something more up front and personal. Forget subtle, I'm going for the throat now."
Shockwave was the first to acknowledge her. "What do you have in mind?"
"Simple, we expose her. We've been planning around this to keep Cybertron from going into a panic...but maybe that's exactly what we need. If all of Cybertron knows Arcee is gone, they aren't going to stand Rockrider being in charge and everyone will cause chaos as a result, enough to spur Rockrider out of her delusion that her plan is flawless. If she wants that caste system back so bad, she's going to have to figure out how to get it without the people which is impossible."
All three mechs were surprised by Windblade's abnormally reckless approach but upon closer inspection, she wasn't wrong. Rockrider was no Megatron or Optimus or even Arcee, she bragged power but there was no way she would be able to control an agitated Cybertron against her.
"I guess I'll let Haywire and Optimus know to sound the trumpets," Bee laughed. "This ought to be fun. Since we're nearly at the palace, I'll be sure to make it quick in case Rockrider tries to pull something."
Sure enough, the pilots of their vessel met with some resistance getting the access codes to the palace's landing zone. It seemed Rockrider didn't want any civilians inside. It took convincing but with Scythe's direction, a trick he knew being an ex-Decepticon, they were finally granted docking. Bee quickly relayed the message from Windblade of her plan to Optimus and although he was slightly against it, he too seemed to realize dancing around the problem was not doing what they needed. They had survived a whole war. At this point, stirring up chaos with Rockrider's wrath was nothing in comparison to dealing with Megatron's horrific brutality at his prime and the Decepticons who were easily had the deadliest beings on Cybertron on their side.
When they docked, there was a sense of amusement the second time Bee stepped foot in the palace. Watching the guards' faces when Bumblebee strode by, this time accompanying the sovereign leader of Cybertropolis, was perfect. They couldn't arrest him or do anything without giving themselves away as traitors. But they were about to break that bubble. Shockwave followed and his imposing structure alone was enough to keep the guards from even attempting to go near him. Naturally, being one of the most infamous Decepticons had its very own perk. No one was stupid enough to mess with him because everyone knew what he was capable of.
A faded gold mech approached them from the closed doors of Arcee's throne room and held out a servo. If Bee could recall, the mech known as Wrathzone was Rockrider's bodyguard and fellow traitorous scumbag. He made a silent note of that as the bigger mech spoke with a baritone that rivaled Optimus'.
"I'm afraid the Queen will take no visitors. Whoever allowed you to go through this far made a mistake," he hissed.
Shockwave made sure to act more as Windblade's bodyguard despite his real intentions being more aggressive than that. "But this isn't a matter of a civilian dispute. It is a matter of grave importance, and you will let us through. Cybertropolis' very own Windblade demands it. You cannot deny an emergency call of the sovereign leader of Cybertropolis. That is negligence of duty as your queen should know."
Windblade politely held up a servo to calm Shockwave when Wrathzone gave him an irate glare and he began to silently challenge the larger mech himself. "Thank you, Shockwave, I will take it from here. He is right though. By accordance of the Treaty of Cybertropolis, the queen must be present when the leader needs assistance or available for all forms of discussion. Arcee would know...because she wrote the treaty, and we signed it together."
Wrathzone shook his helm, "The situation our queen is in is-"
"-is going to be lot worse unless you let me talk to her," Windblade growled. Her professional tone was quickly dropped and Wrathzone went silent.
Hesitantly, Wrathzone was slow to signal for the doors to be opened but he did it with annoyance. He had nothing to combat Windblade and her tongue, an effect Bumblebee appreciated which was one reason he loved her as a friend. He missed her sharp wits and snappy comebacks that could leave a room dead.
The throne was foremost empty, a painful reminder that it was still missing its sole inhabitant. But then Rockrider stumbled in from the side and gasped as she saw Windblade and her unannounced guests.
"Wha-Windblade! My lady! How good it is to see you! I-I regret to inform you-"
"Save the quips, sister, this no longer a friendly visit," Windblade said with distaste.
"My lady?"
"Go get Arcee now."
Rockrider was stunned by the tone. "W-well you see, I can't do that."
"Fine, then I'll get her," the seeker said, giving a fake smile. When she tried to go to the doors to the side of the throne, Wrathzone stepped in her way.
"You aren't allowed back there-"
"Arcee always lets me stride in there and you would know that if you were paying attention to her mannerisms instead of planning a coup like a bunch of imbeciles high on phenolic dust."
Shockwave gave a small, quiet chuckle at watching Rockrider go rigid and Wrathzone was quite surprised. Windblade threw up her eyebrows looking between the two until one of them talked and it was Rockrider who shook out of her delirium.
"Alright then, if you know, I guess we can drop the pleasantries. She is gone. I am in command!" Rockrider hissed.
Windblade gave a tut and looked at her up and down. "Honey, if you're in charge, Cybertron's dead where it stands. Now either you tell me why my sister-in-arms is on the Isle of the Allspark or I swear I will kick every one of your scraggly afts to the moons."
Rockrider scoffed at the threat. "You're a respected leader. You would dare hit-"
Windblade took off her fancy headdress and threw it at Shockwave who caught it abruptly in startlement, not looking away from the bronze femme. "You forget, I served in the war. I killed people with my bare servos. Where were you?"
Upon seeing the seriousness of the situation, Rockrider cowered slightly as she knew Windblade wasn't bluffing. Bumblebee smirked at the irony. If this was Arcee, the queen would have stood up for herself regardless of who challenged her. Rockrider was no Arcee.
Suddenly, guards began pouring in from all entrances and stood between them and Rockrider who regained her confidence. "What you don't get is Arcee was weak when it came to ruling. This isn't Cybertron anymore, nothing but a mockery in its former glorious self."
"You mean the caste system?" Shockwave asked. "The system failed because it hurt its citizens by dividing them into classes where only the elite survived while the rest were disregarded as scrap. I would know; I once was a senator in the same regime. By what it sounds like, you were pretty far up there too. Of course, you would want the old system back because it benefited you."
"And what of you, Shockwave? You think that now your back as a representative that you are more than a Decepticon?" Rokcrider bit back, "You want the old glory back as much as I do."
"I'm afraid you are misinformed."
Windblade glared at Rockrider before sneering, "You want to be in charge, Rockrider? Fine, let's see how you handle all the problems that come with it. I will make your life a living hell for this. We all will and don't try and pull any traitorous nonsense against me, I've already got contingency plans lined up as does Cybertropolis. Good luck and watch your back."
As Windblade turned to leave, Bumblebee gave Rockrider a mocking gesture before following her, leaving the phony queen in disarray. "Wow, I missed the old you. And here I thought you went soft on us as the leader of Cybertropolis."
"All that fancy jewelry and stuff doesn't change that I'm still a brute deep down. But it comes with the job. Oh no, I'm not being a leader in this anymore. Now I'm a warrior again and I'm going to bring down some pain to that piece of-"
Scythe met up with them in the outer hall and asked, "So, did you kill her?"
"No, unfortunately not," Windblade said, "but I sent a blow to her ego making her realize she's not as smart as she thinks."
Bumblebee then turned to Windblade. "Well, you've already stirred the pot. What's next on the list?"
The smile she grew was enough to make the others grow entranced. "Now? We pour out the damn thing on the floor."
Shockwave nodded, "Are you sure you were never a Decepticon?"
She shrugged, "Thought about it, didn't work for me."
AN: As you've noticed, I'm starting to even out the story telling between the Isle and Cybertron. The reason why you followed Arcee and Megatron more at first was to establish the environment. Now, things will have a cause and effect routine and more characters crucial to this junction of stories will appear in due time.
