Audino Agatha's emotions were all dried up. She laid on her side and faced the wall with her arms crossed in front of her when a knock sounded on her door.
A Flaffy entered the room. She closed the door behind herself before speaking.
"I'm here to change out your bandages."
"Okay," Agatha answered.
Agatha returned to laying on her back. She loathed not being able to move very much while the Flaaffy did her job, but it wasn't her fault. There wasn't any reason to take it out on her.
Agatha sat up and moved her body around for new bandages. The Flaaffy explained to her that they were second degree burns, and that she would need to wear bandages for a while with some scarring left behind. She also explained that she'd need some physical therapy to build back some lost or damaged muscles.
Agatha just let her talk. She knew most of this stuff already.
After the Flaaffy had finished working, Agatha asked, "What about my feet?"
"You have prostheses being made for your feet," she answered. "All of your important and complex bones like your ankles were still intact, so your quality of life should be affected very minimally after you get used to them. We hope you'll be happy with your body, Agatha."
"Thanks," Agatha said in monotone.
"We're always a holler away."
Flaffy left without another word, taking the old bandages with her.
Agatha continued to think about her feet. The scars she had wouldn't let her win beauty pageants, but she couldn't imagine walking with the now numb part of her body. There wasn't much to change about it, though. Her thoughts led her back home.
After a few minutes, Agatha called out in the calmest voice she could. Just seconds later, footsteps made their way to the door.
The same Bayleef from before came back inside. His red eyes settled a little lower when Agatha looked back at him
"Hello, Agatha," Bayleef said, "how can I help you?"
"I want to see my house," Agatha said.
"Your house?" Bayleef asked. "I'm not sure if I can make that happen yet..."
"I can handle it."
Bayleef's whole face lifted and started to fall back down again as he studied her eyes. A few of his next breaths were meant for words, but only one of them made it that far as he exhaled.
"Okay," Bayleef said. "But only with capable company. And in a few hours."
Agatha slept and ate for a couple hours. Bayleef brought her food, but she didn't eat as much as she normally would feel like. She didn't have any motivation to.
When the time arrived, Bayleef brought a Mudbray with him to carry her. With her permission, Bayleef lifted Audino onto Mudbray's back from the bed.
In the plain, hospital hallways, an Azumarill joined them on their way outside. Agatha focused on keeping herself comfortable on the Mudbray's back. Her head dropped down over his side, eyes locked on the floor.
Outside the hospital on the sidewalks, it looked a lot smaller than Agatha thought it would be. The building only seemed to have three or four levels to it, and there wasn't much activity in the hallways while they were leaving. They continued on a dirt path cutting through grass.
It didn't take long for them to become surrounded by the denser trees of woods and sounds of the active bugs in the middle of the day. No one talked very much, but Agatha didn't pay attention to the atmosphere. She dozed off staring at the ground.
"We're here," said Bayleef.
Audino Agatha turned her head up.
Fires had burned the grass brown in some places, and killed it in others. The remains of the house weren't even as tall as she would be if she could stand up. Gray and black wood covered the ground like a gritty, jagged blanket. Epicenters of explosions were clear by holes and dents in the soil.
Agatha had been told that the explosions were scattered across the house from the device. It was much more focused where the device stood. The short hill on the lawn was unrecognizable, a mound of dirt and grass of varying colors.
The four metal pillars were still standing. All of the wires burned away from it.
"There," Agatha said, pointing at it.
Mudbray took his time. He lifted his legs higher to keep from tripping on debris. When he got there, Agatha looked up and down at the circular metal panel on the ground.
The red color from before left behind brown burn marks in the same circular pattern.
"Do you know what made it explode?" Agatha asked.
"No," Mudbray said. "No one knows how it works or its purpose. We lost all records."
"I want to take it apart and keep it."
Bayleef and Azumarill glanced towards each other.
"Agatha," Bayleef said, "now, we do believe that this device caused this… devastation. You see why we don't particularly like the idea of it being tinkered with…"
"I can fix it."
"As your doctor, the answer will be no." Bayleef paused. "But, I won't restrict your freedom of choice. But can you promise me you won't take any risks?"
"Yeah."
Agatha gave a firm nod. A mistake that cause this would most likely be simple to spot. She had to try either way. Even if it could destroy the whole world, she'd try to fix it. It was special to her family.
"You can unhook it from the ground and take it separately in pieces," Agatha said.
"We'll have it done and stored away," said Bayleef. "Is there anything else you want done here?"
"No."
"Is there anything you want from somewhere else?"
Agatha stared off at the device without blinking.
"Agatha?" Bayleef asked.
"I'm hungry," said Agatha.
Bayleef's face brightened. "Yes. Yes, of course."
