Audino Agatha daydreamed while reading text messages in the group chat. Alondra told everyone what happened, so they were going through and saying how they each prepared. She didn't have anything to add to the conversation.
A knock pounded on the door downstairs. Agatha knew Claire said she would likely come home early, but she expected it to be after the lunch rush, not in the middle of the morning. She didn't even have her prosthetic feet on. After she put them on, she walked down the ramp and unlocked the door. She politely pulled it in as she always did.
A Liepard and Grovyle looked back at her. Agatha stepped back from the door out of surprise. She didn't have anything covering her scars or prosthetic feet.
"Miss Agatha Pharaoh?" Liepard asked. "I'm Kate Van Dyke, head of the Verity National Museum. Is Claire Yanders here?"
"N-no," Agatha said.
"Well, she hasn't been answering some of our calls. My museum is concerned with preserving history for learning purposes for the general public, and we would like to schedule time with you to ask some questions regarding your family."
Liepard extended her arm with a small card in hand. Agatha took it on instinct.
"This is our card so you may call back any time. We would love to talk more with your guardian as well in the future."
"Thank... you," Agatha muttered.
"Thank you. Have a good day."
Liepard and Grovyle turned and walked away. Agatha watched them for a moment before feeling comfortable enough to close the door.
After she closed it, Agatha brought the card to her face. It had Liepard's name, a phone number, and the address of the museum. She would tell Claire about it when she got back, for the benefit of the doubt.
Agatha retreated back up to her room and used her phone to look for more information. She went back to lying on her stomach with her heavy, metal feet left on the floor.
She got a jolt when she looked up the building on her phone; a white building surrounded by marble fountains and gold statues. Jets of water along the perimeter highlighted crystal clear windows. It eclipsed even Pharaoh Manor in size.
Agatha looked at the information and exhibits it offered. There were paintings, small rooms decorated with old items behind ropes, exhibits that explained sections of history, and more. Most of it specialized in old, cultural work. There were paintings done in dead styles, too.
Agatha didn't know whether or not she wanted to add to it, since it was personal. Her family earned this much, at least. And it wasn't her right to stop it from happening just because she didn't want it to.
Maybe the idea of her family being history didn't sit right.
In the early afternoon, Mightyena Claire came back home. Agatha put her prosthetic feet back on and walked back down a minute or two after Claire came home. She had the card dangling in her hand.
Claire was already on her bed in the corner of the room, away from the TV. She barely responded to the clink of her feet on the floor.
"Hi," Agatha said.
"Hello," Claire grunted. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, just uhm... Some people came to our door earlier."
Claire clearly didn't have much energy, but she lifted her head attentively and received the card from her.
"Wait..." Claire muttered with widening eyes. "Was she a Liepard?"
"Uhm, yeah," Agatha said. "Do you know her?"
"I know about her. She was the Guildmaster of another Guild. They specialized in studying different cultures, and when they disbanded, they put everything into this museum and split money with the rest of her Guild. They should still be together."
"Oh."
Claire looked up at Agatha's face. Agatha turned away.
"Do you want to meet with her?" Claire asked. "It's about... Well... Right?"
"Yeah," Agatha said. "I, uh, think I do want to meet with her."
"What times should I ask for?"
"Well, anything after school is fine."
"Okay. I'll call them this evening."
Agatha had gone out for a long walk and came back when dusk lured out bugs. She went back to her room to finish her exercise with some push-ups.
While she paced around taking in deep breaths, she could hear Claire's muffled voice under her feet. She bent down on her knees and put the strand of her ear on the floor.
"Yes," Claire said, "she has. Do you think it would be okay... Oh. That's generous for your time, thank you. I think we will come tomorrow. Thank you. Yes. Bye."
Agatha continued to pace a little while Claire's footsteps came up the ramp. She had her hands on her hips when Claire came in.
"Hey," Agatha mumbled. "So, they're coming tomorrow?"
"Yes," Claire said.
Claire continued to stare for a second. Agatha let her arms fall to her side and leaned on one leg.
"What?" Agatha asked.
"Oh, nothing," Claire said. "I just, well, didn't realize how strong you were getting... You know, uh, I could find you lessons."
"Lessons?"
"For fighting, I mean. To pick up skills. I could set you up to learn from Annette sometime."
"Do you really think I'd be ready for that?"
Claire chuckled to herself.
"Just don't think about it too much. Make sure you go to bed early if you plan on talking with Miss Kate tomorrow."
Audino Agatha had gone to bed early, but still woke up tired and grouchy. Her fur spiked up in random areas from tossing and turning in her sleep. Without them, she wasn't sure if she had actually slept or not.
She put on her white cloak and huge glasses for the day at school, but then had a sudden thought come into her mind and stayed there. She just didn't feel like going today. Really badly. It felt like midnight.
Agatha went down to the first floor after taking the cloak and glasses off. Claire was already up. She ate an omelet in front of the TV with the news on.
"I don't want to go to school today," Agatha said.
"Okay," Claire said. "Do you just not like this school?"
Agatha hadn't thought about whether she liked it or not. It was okay.
"If you want," Claire continued, "we can have you shadow at other schools. You can go to any school you want to. I just assumed you'd want a small school for now."
"I don't know... But, yeah. I'll shadow at other schools, I guess."
"I'll make a list of them, but what do you want to do today?"
"Probably just training. Hard training for the, uh, thing coming up."
"Just make sure to be done by the evening for when that Liepard comes over," she said.
"Right."
Agatha sat around and waited until Claire went out for the day. As usual, she went outside and stayed in the area around her house. Without her rubber coverings for her prosthetics, she found walking a lot easier.
She didn't have a way to practice actual combat yet, so she practiced moves all day. She learned Heal Pulse and Heal Bell easily after learning Wish, and then moved on to basic attacking moves. She took breaks in between, but generally, practiced all day. Getting run over by a mob with only Alondra wasn't fun.
After she got tired of moves, she worked on her flexibility and kicks. Her leg could kick up almost over her head, at her physical limit. She continually stopped just before she would start getting sweaty and lie around on the grass covered with dew.
Once the morning air warmed, Agatha stopped for the day and went back inside. A dull sting punished her for overdoing it, but it faded as she ate.
Agatha stole a short nap before a knock came on the door. She raced down to the first floor and yanked open the door.
This time, Agatha jolted back from how many people were with the Liepard. A Grovyle, Slowbro, Gengar, and Flaaffy loomed on the sides of the doorway. Liepard Kate wore a polite smile.
"May we come in?" Kate asked.
Agatha backed up and nodded. They filed in one by one, each of them being taller than she was as they passed. Grovyle and Gengar held onto notebooks while Slowbro seemed to have a drawing pad.
Agatha closed the door and pointed to the short table in front of the TV.
"Uhm, we can sit over there," Agatha said.
Although there was a couch, all of them politely sat on the floor facing it. Agatha took the hint and rested on it with her legs tight together, arms in her lap, and hands folded. Liepard Kate faced her straight on while the others stayed on her sides.
"Alright," Kate said, "we're here to ask some questions to learn more about you. You don't have to answer anything you wouldn't like to."
"Okay," Agatha said.
"Now then. We've heard your family had lots of different jobs between themselves such as doctors and politicians."
"Yes."
"Were all of them also fortune tellers?"
"Some. It was a personal choice whether or not to be one."
Agatha noticed Grovyle and Gengar writing in their notebooks. Slowbro's hand moved in large arcs over his spiral pad.
"We don't have many details about this fortune telling," Kate said. "We've found that throughout the generations, the Pharaohs have predicted battles, large, political shifts, and even their own deaths in some cases. How much can you say about the actual methods?"
Agatha didn't know where to start. She had no idea what type of idea or view they had already.
"Well, uhm, it runs in the family."
"Runs in the family?" Kate asked. "Like, genetically?"
"Yes."
"So it's not a method of fortune telling kept in the family, but an... ability sort of speak?"
"Yes."
"Do you have this ability?"
"You could say that."
"Can you describe it?"
"Not... deeply," Agatha said. "Because, well, it has to do with how old I am… It's never happened until we turned sixteen before."
"Wow," Kate said. "Interesting. Do you know some examples of experiences others have had? Was it in dreams? Or, some type of visions?"
"There are lots of different experiences with it. Both of those have happened commonly, but there are plenty of ways."
"Well, these ways seem to work. Not much attention is being given due to how old some of these reports are, but these are incredible. Does your family have any clues on the origin of what is being passed down?"
"A... strong connection to the world in general. That's how my parents described it to me."
"I see," Kate said. "What was your home like?"
"Most of the time, it was just me and my parents," Agatha said. "My parents hosted family gatherings, though."
"Your parents were researchers, right?"
"Yeah."
"Do you feel comfortable talking about what happened?"
Agatha swallowed and grimaced. She wanted to answer, but give absolutely no details.
"An experiment went wrong," Agatha said.
Liepard Kate nodded and stared for a short moment to let her continue. When Agatha didn't talk, Kate continued.
"Okay," Kate said. "I have just one more personal question, and then I'd like to just discuss some more about those accomplishments."
"Okay," Agatha said.
"Because of insurances and your family's combined wealth, you're in the top one-hundred for richest pokemon in the world. You have more wealth than the Veritan royal family. How are you feeling about that?"
Her parents didn't spend on a lot of unnecessary things, but Agatha didn't realize the full scale until now. She never really understood most of it.
"I don't really think about it too much," Agatha said.
"Oh. I see."
Audino Agatha continued to answer Kate's questions for a while. When she yawned and gave off a bit of a sleepy vibe, Kate verbally acknowledged it and left a few minutes later. She went back upstairs to her room and fell asleep on her bed.
Agatha woke up from discomfort. Her arms, legs, and back ached all over. The recoil hit harder than she thought. She tried to sit up, but a snap of pain made her fall back. She let out a high-pitched sigh that caused movement on the floor below.
Just a moment later, the Mightyena came into the room to her bedside. Agatha met her red eyes and groaned.
"Are you alright?" Claire asked.
"Yeah," Agatha grunted, "just. Got a. Little strain."
"Let me see..."
Claire lifted the white covers off of her. Agatha flinched at her alarmed expression.
"You pushed it too far," Claire said, "I'm going to call someone."
"I didn't push that hard," Agatha argued, "this is normal."
"Agatha, you went through physical therapy too fast and you're still growing. Your muscles can't deal with this. You need to be patient."
"I don't need you to call anyone."
"Agatha, please."
Claire stormed out of the room. Agatha let her head drop back and stayed still.
A while later, a Bayleef came into her room. Agatha turned her neck a little and recognized Jim's strange expressions. Jim extended his vines and lifted the covers.
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Mightyena Claire come back inside. She stood in the doorway staring blankly.
"Agatha, you had to relearn how to walk," Jim sighed.
"How many times do you want me to learn it again for you to finally be satisfied?" Agatha asked with a hissing voice.
"What I mean is that it's impossible for anyone to move faster than you have been. This is just logic."
Jim put a vine on her forehead.
"Oh," Jim said, "your body's energy is... You're in the middle of a growth spurt. The intensity and circumstances just didn't help. Did you eat much today?"
"Not a lot…"
"Claire, do you mind making that thing I talked about earlier?"
"Okay," Claire said, nodding.
A slight tingle reached out from Jim's vine.
"The stress is around your back," Jim examined. "Can you roll over?"
Agatha groaned and complied. She relied fully on her arms to get herself laying on her chest. She spread out her arms to her side.
"This might sting just a little," Jim said, "but you'll feel better. And you've been through worse."
The dull pain that followed just irritated her. She wriggled uncomfortably while Bayleef Jim poked around and rubbed muscles, bringing pain. After a while, it started to feel better.
Agatha thought Jim would be done by now, but he continued longer. The movements started to make her relaxed and sleepy.
"Are you done yet?" Agatha groaned
"Just relax," Jim said quietly.
With nothing to do or struggle with and the relaxation, Agatha started to get sleepy again. She tried to fight it off from being embarrassed, but she was barely conscious when Jim left the room.
The strand of Agatha's ear dangled off of the side of her bed on the floor. Without moving, she was able to hear the first floor.
"She'll have a good night's rest," Jim's voice said.
"Thank you so much," Claire said.
"She's gotten strong. It isn't from outbursts, is it?"
"No, not at all. She's just very athletic... I think it helps."
"Make sure she gets some variety in how she relaxes. Spas, arts... Just anything to make her feel less isolated."
"I'm going to have her shadow at a big school one of these days. She probably won't like it, but… I hope she meets people."
"Good. That's good," Jim said. "If you need anything, call again any time."
"Thank you, Jim."
"No problem."
The door opened and closed.
Agatha realized the sounds of the crickets outside. She closed her eyes and just listened.
