Naruto looked down at the little snowball on the table. The thing looked back with beady eyes of ice waving its arms to be picked up; much like a toddler would. It had been a few weeks since his fight in Umssamu Village and, as Naruto refused to work with anyone most of the time and Kazahana now wanted him dead, the boy had been ordered not to leave camp unless absolutely necessary. He had gone on a handful of reconnaissance missions with Kotetsu and Izumo to report on enemy troop movements, but spent most of his time perfecting techniques. So far he hadn't had any luck in getting the snowmen to obey any better than previously, but the battle fan was coming along much better. After working out how to hold and wield it he had used it to generate wind attacks. Naruto reworked Wind Release: Wind Scythe Cyclone and could even increase the power in his own original jutsu.
Giving it up as a bad job, the Jinchuriki left his room and sealed the entrance with a wall of ice. The boy stayed in an igloo he created in a small clearing. The woods all around were boobytrapped with every conceivable trap he could think of. Taking to the treetops Naruto made his way to base camp. Passing through the gates he nodded to the guard and made for the commander's office.
Sitting down in the reception area he waited to be called; the commander had sent him a message to report in around noon. Looking at the mission board he saw two low paying missions: one was helping a small farm with wolves and another was basic bodyguard work for a shipment of rice. Looking up at the wall clock the boy realized it was time to meet his boss.
"Come in, Uzumaki." The Jinchuriki heard knocking on the door.
Inside the office not much had changed. Inosa was hunched over her desk studying the boy closely as he walked in. She just didn't understand how the kid hadn't completely broken yet. She new of Hinata Hyuga's letters and the way they gave him an escape, something that worried her knowing of the replacement mercenaries arriving today. This would give Naruto some much needed relief, or turn him into an unholy terror that will absolutely kill anyone that looked at the girl in the wrong way.
"Morning Uzumaki, I have an assignment for you."
"Kind of figured that." Naruto stated in a slightly humorous manner. "Why else would you give me a designated time to meet?"
Inosa sat back in her chair still studying the boy. "Because of loses the samurai are allowing a handful of replacements to come in for each camp. Ours are arriving today and I need you to head for Hoiyoda Port to pick them up. Kotetsu and Izumo are going with you as well a few others. Take the day and show them around some before bringing here."
"Anyone I know?" The blonde asked with a frown. "My former classmates just graduated."
Anticipating his reaction Inosa handed over two files. The first one Naruto opened show a boy with sunglasses and brown hair the bushed up on his head. He remembered Shino Aburame as a quiet guy the really liked bugs. Setting his file aside he opened the second, and instantly grew angry. His left eye slitted pupil glowed red as he looked down at the pale eyed girl with dark blue hair cut short, two long bangs on either side of her face falling down to her chin.
"NO!" The Jinchuriki growled uproariously. "SHE CAN'T COME HERE! NOT TO THIS HELL!"
Quickly extending her shadow Inosa captured Naruto in her jutsu. Holding him for a second she stressed forcibly. "Calm down kid, she's volunteered and to turn back now, unless several injured, is treason. You can except that or not but either way it changes nothing. Besides, what right do you have to say anything. In case you have forgotten, Hinata is a kunoichi now and more than entitled to make her own decisions."
Naruto struggled against the jutsu for a second before giving up. Gripping the chair arms so hard his hands shook he pleaded. "Please, this place will break her. You have to send her home."
"Do you really think so little of your friend?" Inosa asked as she released her jutsu. "She's a Shinobi same as you."
"It's not that and you know it." Naruto glared hard at the woman. Looking down in shame he explained dejectedly. "Hinata's not like me at all; Commander Nara. She's a wonderful person and friend: shy, innocent, sweet. She's not a monster like me, a demon."
Inosa said nothing as she let the boy's words sink in. It wasn't like he surprised her with the revelation, but it was still sad to hear those words uttered out loud. Knowing there wasn't much she could say to make Naruto view himself differently, the woman changed tactics and tried to placate his fears about a future damaged Hyuga Heiress. "We've both seen what this place can do to seasoned veterans Naruto. We've both seen what gets sent back home. Sometimes we wonder if dead would be better than those so broken they barely resemble human; either physically or mentally, or both. However, so has Hinata. Several members of her clan have gone home in caskets or broken pieces. She knows more or less what she's in for; even with your fairytale lies."
"How did you know about that?" The boy snapped out of his depression suddenly as he grew suspicious. "Have you been reading my mail!?"
"Oh please, you think you're the first ninja to lie about the dangers of missions to those they love?" The woman couldn't help but laugh. "We're ninja brat, why'd we ever tell the truth? Got keep them all thinking we're heroes after all, least until they take a closer look."
Naruto half smirked at the remark. His face slowly turned serious as he gave his commander a determined glare. "I swear I'll do all in my power to protect her, not because I think she is weak but because I love her; she's the only one that kept me somewhat sane in this hell. Anything that dares to threaten her will be utterly destroyed by my hand. I'll wipe them from the face of this earth; believe it."
…..
Natsu Hyuga stood on the large ship's bow as they steered for the harbor. The frozen coastline looked beautiful from this far out. Standing here she loved the way the cool air moved through her lovely short green hair. Of course she wasn't a fool and understood the ugly truth hidden behind the pretty lie and serene village they would soon dock at. Still it didn't hurt to take in the scenery.
A quiet voice spoke up behind her. "Are we almost there Natsu-kun?"
Turning the older teen smiled at her charge; Lady Hinata Hyuga. The heiress had a determined gleam in her lavender eyes that would shock anyone that knew her. Natsu also noticed a small amount of blush on her cheeks which Hana had been kind enough to help her with. Next to her stood the ever stock Shino Aburame and their Chunin Leader Hana Inuzuka. The Three Haimaru Brothers, three large grey dogs with white bellies, flanked the Inuzuka alert as ever.
"We will probably dock in thirty minutes Hinata-sama. Though I'm not sure how far inland base camp is."
Hana studied the coast with a cautious eye. "We should stay close together when we make shore. It's unfortunate but we're more or less alone in this; except for Mizuki and Team Guy of course."
"If this rumor regarding a bounty on Naruto's head is true, posed by members of our own Civilian Council no less, even those wearing a Leaf Headband are potential enemies." Shino spoke in his usual quiet manner.
Natsu frowned at this but made no comment. When it came to Naruto Uzumaki she had the attitude it was best to stay clear. She did not believe any nonsense rumors that the boy was controlled by the Kyuubi, he was just a troublemaker that acted out far to much for her liking. The greenette was well aware of Lady Hinata's infatuation with the Jinchuriki but thought she could do far better. Of course that wasn't relevant anymore as the clan wanted Naruto brought into the fold if he survived the mercenary operation. Hiashi had ordered her to help Hinata woe the Jinchuriki at all costs, though Natsu had a strong suspicion that the elders were unaware of the clan head's intentions. They sent a young branch member to seduce the blonde on their orders; Hanoko Hyuga. The greenette wasn't worried about this as many Hyuga had reported Naruto received Hinata's letters eagerly during mail call and he wouldn't so much as look at any other kunoichi; so Natsu believed her assignment would be easy enough even with fierce competition.
"What's everyone so glum for, huh?" The shinobi turned to see Mizuki walking up with Team Guy. "We're going to go play in the snow; so be happy."
Natsu smiled at her younger clansman Neji. He was a no nonsense person with a cold demeanor, long brown perfect pristine hair tide together at the base with white ribbon, and the normal pale eyes of their clan. So far this trip he hadn't interacted much with Hinata and the woman was worried. Family should be the people you could rely on most but the boy's attitude seemed to suggest otherwise. His teammate Tenten was a sweet tall girl with a a darker shade of brunette hair in two neat buns on top of her head; they almost looked like panda ears really. Finally Rock Lee was a good natured goofball with black hair in a bowl cut. Right now he was leaning on his team's kunoichi for support as the sea did not agree with is stomach. Neji and Tenten wore the white winter cloak like everyone else, but Lee had opted for an insulated green jumpsuit that made his muscles look slightly bigger than they really were. Orange leg warmers on his ankles hid the alarming amount of weight the boy sported for taijutsu training.
Hana walked up to the bow and sniffed the air. Her nose wrinkled as she smelt something offensive. Hinata saw this and asked curiously. "Hana-Senpai, did you detect something?"
"Old blood." The chunin frowned studying the coast. Looking down at the young girl she emphasized. "Old blood, death, fear, and, the most alarming, excitement; there are those who relish this environment. They will be the most dangerous to deal with, and we will be sleeping next to a few of them."
"You mean Leaf Shinobi!?" Lee asked alarmed. "Why would Leaf Shinobi find this exciting!?"
"Who do you think volunteers for assignments like this?" Mizuki chuckled with a head shake. "Fools seeking glory who try bringing their clan honor, desperate shinobi in need of money, and the insane that want a reason to destroy everything around them. There's also the sadistic shinobi that get to take their time with victims when no one's around to hear the screaming. If you're lucky all they'll do is torture you to death."
"Lucky?" Neji quirked an eyebrow. "Being tortured to death is lucky?"
"There are worse things than dying Neji." The older shinobi explained with a serious look. "Never let them take you alive; never."
…..
Naruto stood on the dock watching the boat arrive. He had been studying the new Leaf Shinobi for a while now and took some pride in being able to locate all thirty among the passengers. He wasn't sure if this was an accomplishment or not as he had no one to compare to. Spotting his classmates his lone eye fixed on the indigo haired girl. It wasn't like he was trying to notice but the Jinchuriki couldn't help but realize Hinata was feeling out her jacket more than the last time he saw her.
'Stupid hormones.' Naruto grumpily thought. Glaring at the two chunin standing next to him his thoughts darkly judged. 'Stupid older shinobi and red light districts, making me watch such lewd acts. Stupid Commander Inosa for explaining the things I didn't understand when I asked.'
Focusing back on Hinata the girl was suddenly dressed in a tight purple shirt. It was with a good deal of embarrassment Naruto realized his eye was subconsciously looking further under her clothes. No wonder he didn't see the girl dresses in a white cloak like everyone else at first. Reining in his power Hinata's winter cloak appeared over her shoulders like magic. Had she been closer Naruto's right eye would have picked up on it; allowing him to see her both dressed in a jacket and cloak at the same time. (1)
'Stupid x-ray vision and Kyuubi.' The blonde quickly agreed with his own theory; after all, there was no way he was the one that made the eye unintentionally act up. 'That must be it! Bet that fox is a pervert and is trying to influence me! I just have to pay more attention around Hin … ALL pretty girls.'
Izumo noticed the blushing boy nodding his head vigorously and took a guess why. "So Naruto, see anything you like on board?"
"Shut up!" Naruto stuck his nose in the air. "Isn't there some sweetheart-for-hire you need to go see in a whore-house somewhere?"
"Later, maybe," the chunin smiled, "let's see what the tide brings in. You never know, might find me a girlfriend."
Naruto rolled his eyes the possibility. "Thought you said they were a battlefield liability?"
"True, but that doesn't mean I can't juggle work and play." Turning to his partner the chunin winked. "Ain't that right, Kotetsu?"
"You know how many ninja have died playing kiss-face on missions?" The guy asked rubbing his bandages nose. "You're better off not playing stupid games and getting your throat cut from behind."
"What are you two talking about?" Naruto asked curiously.
Izumo's face became serious as he explained. "You'll understand when you start doing missions with Hinata. Just remember kid, she's not helpless nor does she need you to sacrifice yourself for her personal safety. Some hits hurt but not all hits kill."
"Don't forget to keep your flirting private also, or try to anyway." Kotetsu threw in as well. "Enemies can use your love for one another to take advantage of the situation."
"Also," the man's joking demeanor returned as he chuckled childishly, "keep your special eye on the lookout for incoming kunai, not your girlfriend ass jumping from tree to tree. I know a lot of lovebirds that died looking at such a view."
"Shut up asshole." Naruto's blush returned as he waited for the boat.
…..
Neji Hyuga sighed relieved as he walked of the ramp. Feeling solid ground beneath his feet was most satisfactory after two weeks at sea. Tenten hobbled down the ramp dragging a green faced Lee. Reaching the ground she tossed him off her shoulder.
"Finally, maybe now he'll stop puking all over the place."
"Doubtful," the genius Hyuga sighed, "we'll probably have to babysit….."
"THANK KAMI IT'S DRY LAND!" Lee exclaimed happily as he shot up off the ground fully recovered.
"Never mind." Neji ignored his teammate's usual antics as he looked around. At the end of the docks he noticed a few Leaf Shinobi waiting. Several of there boat mates were already walking that way to greet those they knew.
"HELL YES," the prodigy felt an involuntary shiver run down his spine hearing a particular young girl's screechy voice, "BRING ON THE BAD GUYS!"
Glaring up towards the boat the brunette saw the most unconventional Hyuga he had ever laid eyes on. Hanoko was one year his senior with long green hair so dark it was almost black, which she kept in a ponytail that hung down to her ankles. A kunai was bound in the end by the ring which Neji knew she could slice off an enemy's head with. Under her winter cloak was a tight tan battle kimono and blue belt that held two wakizashi swords she could utilize a special form of Air Palms through. With a loud and obnoxious nature that could rival both Lee and their sensei Might Guy, the clan-trained kunoichi was a branch member without rank; until just recently only an elder's bodyguard and servant. She was given the title of Genin by Lord Hokage so as to volunteer for battle. (2)
Soon they were joined by Hinata, Shino, Hana, Natsu, and, much to Neji's discomfort, Hanoko. Walking up the dock he saw a small blonde boy looking suspiciously at the gathering shinobi. Two chunin not to far from him gathered up some of the r new recruits and headed off. Finally the group of mostly genin reached the boy who Neji now saw had mismatched eyes.
'So," the prodigy judged looking the boy up and down, "this is Uzumaki Naruto. He's smaller than I thought he would be.'
Indeed, the smallest member of the group was Hinata and she almost had a full inch on the blonde. Neji noticed the slight scarring around his left eye that made the slitted pupil more menacing. The amount of tension in his muscles spoke he was ready for action in a moment's notice. The prodigy was instantly intrigued and wanted to spar the experienced warrior.
"Hello everyone," Naruto smiled upbeat while sheepishly scratching the back of his head, not really sure about what to do next, "uh, do you guys want to see the village or just go straight to camp."
"The village!" Hanoko exclaimed as she wrapped the boy in a one armed hug. Neji noticed his shy cousin's brow furrow slightly at the action. "Is there a tea shop close by! I'm sure the adults might want a stiffer drink though!"
"Not a bad idea." Mizuki smiled happily at the suggestion. Turning to the older ladies he asked. "Would either of you care to join me. A few friends of mine were already in camp and we agreed to meet up at a bar they chose. I plan on heading for camp with them."
"I'll stay with Lady Hinata, but thank you for the offer." Natsu gave a slight bow of her head.
"Yeah, think I'll stay and get to know my team a little better." Hana sided with the older Hyuga.
"Suit yourselves." The white haired chunin shrugged. "No offense to any of you guys, but I've been stuck around small children for way longer being an academy instructor and all. It's a bitch always trying to set a good example."
Making his joke the man shushined away in a puff of smoke. Neji observed the suspicious way Naruto watched him leave and realized he was tracking Mizuki with his special eye. 'That doesn't make sense. From what I heard it was Mizuki that helped Naruto graduate the academy, so why wouldn't Naruto trust him.'
"Hey you guys, wait up!" Everyone turned to see a young boy of twelve running up with an old man following him. The child was dressed in a thick brown kimono with short dark hair, and the old man had dull pants and a thick long-sleeved shirt. His head was bald but he had a thick white braided beard that hung down to his chest.
"Hello Keiru-san," Hinata smiled politely with forced patience putting great emphasis on 'san'. The young boy had been dogging her the last week of the boat trip. It was obvious he had a crush which all the girls found cute. The indigo haired Hyuga turned to the old man and asked hopefully. "Muko-san, don't you have business in town?"
"Well, yes, but it can wait a few hours." The man rubbed his bald head with an apologetic shrug. "If no one finds it a bother, may we join you all for tea?"
"I don't see why not." Hana grinned with laughter in her eyes as she winked at Hinata. "Naruto, do you think there's a place were we can all find a seat."
"Yeah, place I go to normally." Naruto beamed happily acting for all the world like a hyperactive goofball. Neji noticed his eyes were a different story of caution and worry; the boy didn't like the strangers obviously. "It's this way; follow me."
Not long they came to a large restaurant called the Golden Sea Dragon. The creature was painted all around the outside walls in bright yellow. Walking in they were met by a pretty receptionist that looked at the group shocked. Neji noticed she was acquainted with their guide. "Hello Naruto-san, my I've never seen you with so many people before."
"Micha, these are new recruits for Hidden Leaf Base Camp; and the old guy and his grandson are friends." The blonde looked around the place and asked. "May we have a private room please?"
Neji noticed the woman shoot everyone suspicious looks but recover quickly. "Yes, right this way. We keep one available just for you like always."
"I know you said y'all would, but I didn't want to put anyone out." Naruto explained with a chuckle.
Showing them to the back, Micha opened a double door to a long room with a short legged table surrounded by blue knee pillows. "I'll bring pots of tea, coffee, and cocoa. Everyone may look at the menus to decide if they want something to eat. The Golden Sea Dragon is famous for our sea food dishes and desserts."
Neji watched the young woman leave but turned quickly when he heard his cousin give out a startled 'epp'. With everyone distracted Naruto had broken free of Hanoko's hug, grabbed Hinata round the middle, and took the pillows at the far end to themselves. Shino managed to grab the pillow next to the blonde. Keiru frowned and hurried round the side to set directly in front of his crush, Muko followed him shaking his head at his grandson's obnoxious antics. Tenten just sat down with Lee between Hana leaving Neji to set across from a frowning Hanoko.
"Just you guys wait," an exuberant Naruto grinned happily, they have the best hot chocolate here. Do you like hot chocolate Hinata-chan?"
Blushing at the suffix the heiress quickly stuttered. "Y-yes, I love hot chocolate; Naruto-kun."
"So Naruto," Neji interjected before his cousin passed out and embarrassed herself, "I take it you know the hostess?"
"Oh, it's no big deal." The blonde shrugged in an over-the-top way, "I happened across her on the way back from a mission. A bunch of bandits were trying to steal her stuff, so I chased them away."
Lee grew excited by this and quickly exclaimed. "Yes, what are missions like? We're not sure exactly what our duties will be. Do we help Kara's forces fight in the war, or sneak behind enemy lines for espionage; report on movements and so forth?"
Naruto thought it over a moment and explained. "We don't directly involve ourselves with the war really, not unless we are on a specific mission related assignment, that's conducted with samurai and pikemen mostly; rapidly trained militia and the like. We do report on enemy movements and protect supply routes, also act as bodyguards when Snow Ninja can't be afforded or there are none available. We also destroy supply routes and perform assassinations. It can get stupid with the rules of engagement though; just let us have a free-for-all and end this bullshit, that's what I say."
Neji's demeanor grew darker as he asked. "What about other Shinobi Camps? I know of the great five that Sand, Earth, and Mist have contracts with Kazahana, but Cloud's contract is with Kata like our own. Have you ever worked with Cloud Shinobi."
"No, can't say that I have." Naruto looked up at the boy curious about his anger; mainly because he noticed it made Hinata uneasy. "We may work for the same guy but that doesn't make us allies. Don't lower your guard around any foreign ninja, and always be on the lookout for freelance ninja."
"Freelance ninja?" Tenten looked puzzled.
"Ninja who aren't associated with an actual village." Their hoist explained darkly. "They don't have to worry about a samurai invitation as they aren't official ninja; think more along the lines of highly skilled civilians. This means they can attack you even in the safe-areas."
The conversation was interrupted as Micha returned with two other servers carrying trays of steaming pots and cups. Placing everything down she looked around the table and asked. "Will there be anything else or are you good with just hot beverages?"
"Do you have chocolate cake!?" Keiru grew happy at the prospect. Looking across the table he asked the indigo haired Hyuga. "Do you want to share a piece with me Hinata-chan?"
Neji humphed at the young boy's forwardness. The kid had fallen head over heels for his cousin the moment he laid eyes on her and wasn't the least bit shy about it. Hinata had tried being polite the whole time but anyone could see she was exhausted by the attention. However, the prodigy decided to keep his mouth shut about it as it wasn't to concerning.
"I'll just bring a whole medium cake for the table to split." Micha smiled at the young boy's over eagerness.
Neji fixed himself a bitter cup of tea and relaxed watching his cousin interact with Uzumaki. Shino didn't say much as the two conversed about missions and home. Hinata filled him in on things that hadn't made her letters and the Aburame just sipped coffee. Neji understood the three would be an unofficial team but didn't see any potential except espionage and tracking missions; which was probably a good thing as it meant Hinata wouldn't be involved in much direct fighting. The prodigy was no fool and understood it was mostly wishful thinking. Much as he found his weak cousin an annoying burden that destiny had saddled him with, he didn't want her hurt or killed. (3)
Keiru grabbed the hot chocolate and poured himself a third cup happily. Eating his second piece of cake he looked inside the top with a frown. "We're getting low. Think we can get more grandpa?"
"I think you had enough chocolate." The man admonished as he took the pot and placed it closer to Naruto's side of the table. "Finish that piece of cake and then we must be going."
"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that." Hinata smiled relieved, trying to hide her happiness at the thought but failing horribly. "Hopefully we will meet again sometime."
Neji notice Hana, Hanoko, and Natsu grow tense for some reason. Feeling an ever so slight amount of chakra build he gave a subtle glance Naruto's way, but the goofball persona was still in full display. The blonde poured himself a fresh cup of hot chocolate and, pausing to blow exaggeratedly on the steam coming off, downed it in one go. Keiru, with a big flourish, finished the one he already poured; Neji was surprised he barely caught the blonde's jutsu while actively looking for it. Keiru smiled at Hinata before his eyes went wide in shock. Suddenly convulsing he fell from his chair as his grandfather stood to help, only for Naruto to appear behind him and wrap his neck in a one arm hold while crushing down hard on the elder man's right wrist; a loud crunching was heard as the bone shattered. The whole room grew silent not knowing what to do. Neji took a guard position by his cousin as Shino called forth his bugs in preparation for defense. The choking man winced in pain as the broken remains of a hidden kunai launcher fell from his right sleeve.
"Like I said earlier," Naruto stated coldly, his goofball demeanor completely gone, "the ones you've got to watch out for the most are the freelance ninja."
"How did you know." The man wheezed out reaching up to Naruto's arm.
"I have x-ray vision." The blonde stated darkly. "I saw your hidden weapons the moment you got off the boat. I didn't say anything as you were 'civilians' entering hostile territory. It wasn't until the brat poisoned the hot chocolate that I knew for sure. He didn't realize I switch cups with him at the last second with an extremely subtle Substitution Jutsu." (4)
"You looked through our clothes?" Muko asked in disbelief.
"Please," Naruto huffed in contempt, "I look through everyone's clothes."
Neji noticed Tenten blush and cover her chest. Lee on the other hand rushed to the dying child. "Quick Keiru, were is the antidote."
It was Muko that hissed desperately. "It's in my breast pocket; please hurry."
Naruto reached inside the man's shirt and pulled out a small blue bottle. Looking at it for a second he crushed it without remorse. The old man looked on shocked and rasped. "What have you done!?"
Naruto sent an overpowered Juken strike straight through Muko's back and cleaved his heart in two. "You tried to kill a killer, and would have killed anyone that drank the hot chocolate as well. What did you expect would happen if you were found out?"
Dropping the dead man to the ground Naruto walked up to the still convulsing Keiru. Silently he formed an ice katana prepared to end his life. Lee crouched over the boy with his arms spread wide. "Stop this, we can still save him!"
"Even if we can find another antidote it won't matter." Naruto glared down coldly. "Do you know how many assassins I let live that tried to kill me a second time the moment an opportunity presented itself. I stopped second guessing my better instincts after I lost count."
"Lee, stand aside." Everyone looked to Hana as she spoke; voice full of authority. "Naruto is correct that the boy is an enemy. A highly trained one at that. Letting him live would be a mistake."
"NO, I will not move!" The green clad boy spoke passionately. "I will not allow…"
Having enough Hana put the boy in a headlock and rendered him unconscious. Taking him away she handed him off to Tenten. The Jinchuriki, watching all this with a face of stone, once more stood over the dying boy and sighed sadly. "I hope you liked the chocolate at least, brat."
Plunging his sword straight through the child's heart he ended his suffering.
…..
It was a somber group that made their way through the woods. Hinata walked next to Naruto subtly shooting him sad glances when she thought no one was looking. Hana had alerted the samurai as to what took place and they came and retrieved the bodies. After taking an official statement the matter was closed; one even said it was just ninja business as usual.
Lee walked further back with Neji and Tenten. The taijutsu expert was still angry with both Hana and Naruto and so was the weapon's expert; more so at the Jinchuriki for peeking, which was a sore spot for the proud kunoichi. Natsu was walking with them trying to placate there anger. Even Neji explained his eye sight activated in stages, so whenever they spared he saw things she would deem inappropriate. Tenten countered by saying that was unavoidable but what Naruto did was inexcusable. The blonde had apologized profusely, explaining he saw no further than her undershirt and panties, but the brunette was still upset with him.
"Hinata-chan," Naruto spoke out of the blue, "who was he; Keiru, I mean?"
The Hyuga heiress jumped a little at being addressed so suddenly. Remembering back sadly she explained somberly. "We met him on the boat. The trip to the cost from Hidden Leaf wasn't long, but the trip at sea took two weeks. Half way we stopped at Gragun Port for supplies and they boarded there. I saved him from falling overboard and he was infatuated with me instantly; called me his beautiful guardian angle."
Growing angry at the memories the kunoichi quietly remarked. "Guess I was pretty stupid, huh Naruto-kun?"
"No more so than other shinobi have been, Hinata." Hana tried to comfort the young heiress. "A friend of mine has a horrible scar on his neck were an enemy kunoichi slit his throat. It was done during sexual intercourse as they both achieved climax. He would have died but his teammate was an accomplished medic ninja. They were investigating disappearances along the boarder and the enemy posed as a farm girl."
Hinata looked down thoughtfully as she continued to follow her friend. Being from a large shinobi clan like the Hyuga she understood all this already; these were her nighttime bed stories after all. That was why when Naruto happily explained to anyone that would lessen he was coming out here she had worried so much. Hinata hated the fact she didn't voice her concerns to the boy back then; try to explain the fairy tails of shinobi heroism he grew up hearing also had a negative side to them. The Fourth Hokage was a great man, a wonderful hero, and leader to Hidden Leaf, but to Hidden Stone he was a legendary monstrous killer of men no different than the Kyuubi he died stopping. She just didn't see how to make the stubborn boy lessen to reason and so, regrettably, stayed quiet. Hearing her grandfather speak of the letters grandmother sent him when he fought on the frontlines, which saw him through the hard times, was what inspired the heiress to write Naruto in the first place.
"We're here." Naruto stated blandly. Trying to be his old self he gave a slightly exaggerated bow as if to present Hinata to the camp.
The young heiress offered a small smile to her friend and studied the place that would be home for the next few months. It honestly wasn't much but a high square wall surrounding an old weathered inn. Tents covered the lawn where ever they could fit. The guards checked their papers before allowing them inside.
"Come on, I think there are a few spots along the East Wall you can set up your tents?" The Jinchuriki explained.
"Where do you stay Naruto." Hana asked looking around. "We should stay close if we're going to be working together. Lord Hokage wants you with me, Shino, and Hinata on a team. Mizuki and Team Guy will also be working hand in hand till this operation is over. The Hokage says this is the best way to increase our chances of survival and mission success."
The Jinchuriki figured as much when he realized two of his classmates were coming. Deciding it wasn't to big a deal he pointed out the direction. "I stay in a clearing not far from the Southeast Corner of the wall. There I have an igloo built using my abilities."
"Alright then, me, Shino, and Hinata will set up our tents there." Hana looked to everyone else. "The rest of you can stay by the East Wall."
"I would like to stay close to Lady Hinata." Natsu quickly spoke up. "I promised Lord Hiashi I would look after her."
Hinata frowned up at the greenette but didn't say anything. It wasn't like she hadn't known this already. Normally, it was Ko that watched over her, but he was already a Jounin so switched duties to guard Hinata's younger sister Hanabi; the normal charge of Natsu. None of this meant the heiress was ok with the arrangement nor agreed with the two Hyugas decisions. After all, whoever heard of a ninja needing a babysitter on a mission. Curiously though the little heiress noticed Hanoko looking apprehensively from Naruto, to her, then up at the older Hyuga, then back at Naruto. Hinata wasn't sure but the older teen seemed desperate, as if the world was falling apart around her head.
"Perhaps I should stay close as well?" The swordswoman asked hopefully. "I could help with training and such."
"Thank you Hanoko, I'm sure Lady Hinata would appreciate all the help you can give." Natsu agreed much to Hanoko's visible relief. "Like you dear, I was given exclusive training by our clan for bodyguard duties and will be instructing Lady Hinata on how to detect poisons with her Byakugan. I'm sure weapon's training can take her further still. Naruto-san also has Juken capability and needs proper instruction."
The older Hyuga then turned to the stock-faced Hyuga Prodigy. "Well you be staying close as well, Neji-san? You could benefit from Byakugan training that doesn't revolve around direct hand-to-hand combat."
Looking at his teammates, both who were still shooting Naruto dirty looks, the boy realized it would not be a good idea. "I thank you for the offer but I'll stay with Lee and Tenten by the wall."
"Alright." Hana interjected thinking it over as she glanced at the sun. "Given the hour I say we make our camps and get some rest. We'll meet up in the mess hall tomorrow and see about mission assignments."
Leaving camp Naruto's group made for his clearing. It wasn't a far walk by any means, but it still took sometime as the boy guided them around traps he had previously set. Walking through the last line of trees Hinata, and everyone else, stared in shock at the igloo the Jinchuriki called home. Easily the size of three small houses the thing had more than enough room for everyone to stay in.
"Impressive," Shino observed in his usual manner, "why did you make it so big?"
Naruto shot the boy a sideways glance and asked. "From what I've been resonantly told, you are all aware the Civilian Council has placed a bounty on my head?"
"Yes," Shino acknowledged blandly, "though I don't believe any actual proof has been given; just idle rumor. Many who return have told of such a thing. A few in fact are those that praise you as a hero who saved their lives. The Hokage is investigating but so far nothing has turned up."
Naruto processed what the boy explained. He was a little shocked to hear there were people talking about him in a positive way back home. Filing the information away for later he explained. "I can sleep in different rooms each night. If someone tries to kill me with a blind-shot jutsu, I have a one in four chance they'll guess the wrong room."
Naruto reworked the entrance tunnel to make it large enough for the adults to walk down and led everyone inside. The boy dissolved he door and Hinata stepped through first. Frowning sadly at the spartan room with ice furniture built for one, she grew curious seeing a furnace and chimney made of ice standing in the middle. A large pile of freshly cut logs rested off to the side. "Naruto-kun, can you make an actual fire in that!?"
"Sure can Hinata-chan," the Jinchuriki beamed proudly nodding his head, "long as my chakra is active in the ice and snow it won't melt by normal means. I can cook on it and everything."
Naruto created a coat-rake from the snow and took of his cloak. Hinata turned away with a massive blush seeing what was underneath. Gone was the orange jacket the boy always wore to be replaced with a tight grey shirt that showed off his defined muscles. He now wore black pants didn't leave much to the imagination either.
Hana crouched down to her ear and teasingly whispered. "Now that's not very ladylike, Lady Hinata."
Naruto busied himself making a small fire as he sat by the furnace. Hanoko smirked as she threw her on cloak on the rake and joined him. Being very bold she sat very close and leaned in suggestively. Hinata frowned at this and placed her cloak on the rake as well. Thinking it over with a slight blush, the girl nervously tapped her fingers together before removing her jacket. Doing her best to act dignified she walked up with a superior gait and sat down on the opposite side of Naruto. Shino stood silently by the back wall watching both girls act foolish but said nothing.
Natsu watched this all with not so much as a facial twitch. Hana stood at her side smirking the whole time. "Looks like the little heiress has competition."
"Judging by Naruto's reaction I'd say not really." The greenette observed blandly. "I'm more worried how far Hanoko will go to secure the Jinchuriki actually."
"What do you mean?" The Inuzuka noticed her dogs smelling the snow as they pawed it inquisitively.
"The clan elders ordered her to do this. The very same old men that can activate our Caged-Bird Seal." The older woman rubbed her forehead protector absentmindedly deep in thought. "You have no idea the emotional strain this thing can have on you. To know no matter how strong you become you can never escape your fate."
"You think Hanoko will eliminate the competition?" The dog-ninja asked disbelieving still studying her dogs. "Naruto would kill her for so much as trying."
"True, but never underestimate the desperate. Being a clan trained kunoichi the girl has never known true freedom. Being allowed to become a genin and escape the clan, even for a short time, is probably one of the happiest experiences she's ever known. If she fails to win Naruto over, she may be forced to give up her rank and return to the clan full time. I'm also curious just how threatening the elders were when they gave the orders. No doubt none of them want to see Naruto join the Head Family. Even with a broken Byakugan there is no guarantee any child he fathers with Hinata would gain the Dojutsu."
"Do you believe the elders would want Hinata dead?" Hana turned to study the greenette carefully.
"No, highly doubtful." Natsu turned to meet the Inuzuka's gaze. "They might be some old bastards that love controlling the lives of Branch Members for the good of the clan, but they are not evil heartless monsters. If push comes to shove they would try and brand Hinata and any child she birthed in order to safeguard the Head Family bloodline. Honestly they probably plan on doing that regardless. When Naruto dispatched Keiru she wanted to object alongside Lee, but held her tongue out of nervousness. She isn't dwelling on it now because she knows how to compartmentalize and focus on the moment, but she'll weep for Keiru tonight in her sleep. The elders have often stated she is to soft to lead the Hyuga."
Both women silently contemplated one another and the genin by the fire until Naruto called out. "Hey, Hana-Senpai, call your dogs back for a second."
There wasn't any need since the three large canines understood the boy's order. Sitting at attention they waited for further instructions obediently. Naruto flashed over hurriedly and plunged his hand into the snow. Pulling it out he glared down at a small snowball that he held in his hand. The boy acted as if it did something offensive. Demanding with a frown he asked. "How the hell are you still here?"
"Naruto-kun," Hinata questioned curiously, "what is that? I sense a small amount of chakra coming from it."
The snowball grew arms and eyes before smiling around at everyone. Doing its absolute best to seem adorable and cute. Naruto crushed it between his hands and threw the snow down angrily. Studying the group he turned to the bug user asking. "Shino, do you know why the Civilian Council wants me dead?"
"I have my suspicions." The boy adjusted his sunglasses out of habit. "You are somehow associated with the Nine-Tailed-Fox. I gather this by the date of your birth and you physically characteristics; the new eye and whiskers."
Naruto noticed no one seemed all that surprised by Shino's observation. "I take it everyone here is up to speed then. The Fourth Hokage sealed the beast in me to stop it from destroying the village; making me its Jinchuriki. As such there are those that think I am the fox or in someways controlled by it. I assure you neither of those two beliefs are true."
"We're well aware of that." Shino assured his teammate. "Me personally, I've known you practically my whole life and have never seen anything that would suggest anything of the sort. Also, I have full faith in Lord Hokage and his wisdom. If he is not worried than I see no reason for myself to worry."
Seeing everyone agreed with the Aburame, Naruto explained about his ability. "My first mission ended in failure and massive injury. After recovering I had my new eye and my left arm was enhanced. It's easy to channel the fox's chakra though my left arm which I use to create my Carnivorous Snowmen. They're like miniature Kyuubi in that they just wish to destroy and kill everything around them. Long as they possess chakra they live and they can steal power from those they kill. My guess, that snowman was waiting for us to fall asleep so as to eat us and retain itself."
The eyebrows of everyone shot up in surprise as Hana barked angrily. "You mean you can't control them and you left one just lying around!?"
"I've never had one last this long; not without someone to eat." Naruto explained with a thoughtful frown. "Maybe I'm getting better at molding the fox's chakra or something. Really I have no way of knowing as there's nothing to compare it with."
Hinata looked around nervously asking. "You didn't make anymore did you Naruto-kun?"
"No, just the one. I was trying to practice my control but didn't have any luck." The blonde rubbed the back of his head sheepishly. "Since they aren't made from my chakra I have a hard time sensing them. Now that I know their duration of existence has increased I'll keep a better watch to insure there are no accidents."
Natsu shook her head at the boy's stupidity. "Let's just go to bed. We'll all sleep here since this room is the warmest."
"Great!" Hanoko exclaimed boisterously. "I'll bunk with Naruto so I do get to cold! You see I sleep practically naked!"
"You and Hinata-sama can sleep next to me." Natsu explained as if she wasn't aware of the girl's implications. "That way we all get plenty of rest."
"That's a good idea." Hana agreed with a mirthful smile. "If Hanoko really wants a big strong man to snuggle with, I'm sure my dogs would love to volunteer."
The three brothers ran up to nuzzle the dark green haired kunoichi with happy barks and tail wags. She fended them off as best she could giggling at the cold noses. "That's ok Hana-Senpai, I'm sure I'll be warm enough with Natsu and Hinata."
…..
Mizuki trudged his way through the snow having finally located his team of genin; to drunk for proper chakra control. The white haired former instructor was not happy with what he had recently found out; not to mention his current situation of being stuck in Snow Country. He wouldn't be here if the fools the Civilian Council paid off could do their damned jobs. Unfortunately, it didn't look like he was going to get things done either.
He had met up with his accomplices in a bar not far from port. There the three remaining assassins explained all they could regarding Uzumaki Naruto's current abilities and power levels. Things were not looking good at all if what they described was accurate. The demon's power over ice was something to be feared greatly and to underestimate it would spell certain death. Mizuki explained to his accomplices that the Civilian Council wanted this handled now, Naruto was not to return home alive; however, the three clearly stated under no circumstances would they engage the brat. Mizuki was on his own if he decided to collect on the bounty.
If it was only money the chunin would gladly let it go, but there was more at stake. Several people on the Civilian Council had dirt they hung over his head. Those assholes made it clear if Naruto returned that evidence would make it to the Hokage's hands. Mizuki was screwed no matter how he looked at it. To fight Naruto at this point and time meant possibly dying, but to do nothing meant death regardless. The man did not know what his next step would be.
'Oh well,' he thought darkly as he approached his current students, 'I just have to bide my time until a moment offers itself to strike.'
Eying Team Guy, paying close attention to Tenten kneeling at a small fire, other dark thoughts began playing through the man's head; images and scenarios which would have Guy violently laying the chunin low in a fresh grave. Waving happily the man saw the young kunoichi making four cups of hot tea. The brunette waved back completely unaware of the danger she was in. Mizuki sat down to enjoy the hot beverage thinking being stuck in camp wouldn't be half bad.
Author's Note:
(1)-Not sure if this was apparent so I'll explain it better. If Naruto is standing in front of a wall and wishes to see through it, his perspective will show him the wall and what's through it because only one eye has x-ray vision. Like when you cover one eye with your hand to read the letters at the eye doctor. Hinata was so far away only his left eye could zoom in so the right was completely useless. The right eye just kept looking at the boat approaching.
(2)-May have used this idea in previous stories. Not every ninja trained at the academy. Academy is easiest way to become a Leaf Shinobi but your clan can train you and have you test out to help fell up ranks quickly in times when village numbers are low; or they can simply use you as a guard.
(3)-Slightly out of character possibly. Neji beat the crap out of her during Chunin Exams but I don't think he wanted her dead. His attempt to 'kill her' at the end of their fight was out of spur of the moment anger because Hinata hit the right buttons. I'm not entirely convinced he was actually trying to kill her though. I think the Hokage would have disqualified him from the exam otherwise; maybe.
(4)-Don't judge, no rule of canon saying this wasn't a possibility.
