Kuri was at work, so for the moment, Kaneki had to retreat to the world of ghouls. He had no wish to do such a thing, however, if left alone, Kuri may be the next victim.

He drove Kuri's Vespa to the house where the ghouls lived with Yoshimura when they were human.

Some older ghouls, like Yoshimura himself, came to the house during ghoul time.

Kaneki doubted he could communicate, but wanted badly to see Yoshimura.

Unfortunately, the house was dark. If Yoshimura did stay here, now was not the time.

Using his key, Kaneki went in to have a look around. It was possible that Yoshimura was asleep? Or so he wanted to think.

Kaneki went through, and then came to his room. It was empty, forlorn, but absolutely full of books. Kaneki repressed an urge to spirit Kuri away here and stay with her in the empty mansion full of books, forever.

That wasn't logical. If they stayed here, she would be in danger of becoming a meal.

Or maybe she wouldn't, he mused. Kuri didn't make him hungry at all, she wasn't appealing in the food way. Her scent was that of a female ghoul.

Perhaps that was why, though she lived with the forest in her backyard, she was still alive.

She was inedible.

Kaneki had been walking, not thinking, and he was now outside the manor, staring up at the mansion of Kaito Fujiwara.

He had been thinking about looking here for Ojiro. That ghoul had to be stopped.

Kaneki snuck in without a problem, then stopped, a horrible scent assaulting him. The scent of death.

There was a dead ghoul here, somewhere.

Kaneki stumbled into the basement. He didnt recognize the dead ghoul, but who would? They had ripped bits of his kakuho to coat their bullets and weapons.

How he died was a mystery, but now the humans had the upper hand; the ghouls had no idea that they had these weapons.

The ghouls would dance through the night, thinking themself invincible. Meanwhile, the humans would become the predators.

Kaneki couldn't do anything to stop them in this human form. But if he became a ghoul, he would never be able to return to this secluded world with Kuri.

If he wanted to secure his future, he had to leave the basement as it was.

But his conscious warred with him until he took a blade from the wall, stabbing, destroying the kakuho. Draining the blood from it down into the drain in the middle of the floor.

The weapons they had already used it on were not here, but now they could no longer create more.

Kaneki knelt to the viscerated body and closed it's eyes. "I'm sorry. Goodbye."

A car sounded in the driveway, and Kaneki kept up and ran out, back to Yoshimura's where a bath awaited. He couldn't let Kuri see him this way.

A blood drenched ghoul…
