Last time on Sonic the Hedgehog, after beginning his conquest on Mobotropolis, Dr. Ivo Robotnik captures and imprisons the world leaders, forcing them to tell him where the last Chaos Emerald location is. As that went on, Sally and Rosie fought against Snively, Ivo's nephew, securing the Chaos Emerald after a tough fight. But as they come back onto the surface, they find their home in complete chaos…

Within Robotnik's Wing Fortress, Robotnik taps his finger on the arm of his throne, waiting impatiently for Snively to come and deliver to him the Chaos Emerald. But as he waited, Sage appears in a hologram to deliver some unfortunate news.

Sage: "Lord Robotnik. I've come with some troubling news. Snively had indeed acquired the Chaos Emerald."

Robotnik: "As you reported. So where is that twerp?"

Sage: "Unfortunately, he reports that he lost the Chaos Emerald to the Princess of Acorns."

Robotnik: "Nigel's child then? Hmph. What a pain… But I do see an opportunity."

Robotnik then smiles evilly.

Robotnik: "Time for a little sport. Send out the Egg Robos to hunt down that princess. I'm going out for a little… walk."

Sage nods before disappearing as Robotnik walks off, adjusting his glasses as his grin grew more sinister.

Within Castle Acorn, Sally and Rosie snuck around, finding robots patrolling the halls of the castle, bodies of Acorn soldiers littering the floors, much to their horror and sadness. The soldiers that were wise enough to surrender or risk more casualties were taken to the dungeons for reasons Sally and Rosie could imagine. The two eventually reach the armory and rest up, Sally and Rosie panting from how far they ran.

Sally: "I cannot believe this… How did this all happen while we were underground? How did it all fall apart so quickly?"

Rosie: "Sally… Are you okay…?"

Sally: "No… I'm not… My kingdom is in shambles…"

Sally starts sliding down the wall she was leaning on and wraps her arms around her legs, hiding her face as she started to cry. Rosie looks at the princess before looking away.

Sally: "My kingdom has become a warzone… My father is missing… Everything fell apart so quickly… And to think this day started with me sparring with a few of these exact soldiers, not thinking about what would come later… I…"

Rosie: "Enough."

Sally looked up, hearing the usually gentle Rosie raise her voice just enough to get her attention, but not alert the robots outside. Rosie then walked over and knelt down to face her friend.

Rosie: "Times are indeed tough… But we have not lost… We still have our lives… And each other. I refuse to let us give up only because things look bleak. Princess… No… Sally. I will continue to fight by your side, so long as you do not give up."

Rosie then walked over and grabbed a one handed broadsword, holding it to Sally with a kneel.

Rosie: "So please, Princess of Acorns… Rise and take up arms. Let us give our people hope…"

Sally looked at Rosie with a look of awe before looking down at the sword. Smiling, she rubs away the tears in her eyes before nodding. She stands up and grips the hilt of the sword, raising it above her head as she stood heroically.

Sally: "I am Sally Alicia Acorn. And as long as I draw breath, I refuse to give up, even in the face of defeat!"

Rosie smiles, proud of her friend before she grabs a bow and quill of arrows. After making this declaration, Sally and Rosie charge out of the armory, surprising the nearby Egg Robos, who were slashed apart by Sally's fierce and ferocious slashes. As a robot tried to sneak attack her, Rosie fired an arrow into the robot's head, shutting it down. After the robot is shut off by the arrow, a compartment suddenly opens, rolling out a trapped Mobini rabbit inside a sphere capsule.

Sally: "A… Pocky? What's it doing in that robot?"

Rosie: "Sally! They all had Mobinis in them!"

Rosie pulls out a penguin Mobini and a bird Mobini in capsules. Sally gasps, having a terrifying thought.

Sally: "These Mobini… Do you think they were batteries for these robots?"

Rosie: "Using living creatures as a power source for robots… How inhumane!"

The duo open the capsules before seeing robot reinforcements march in. The duo immediately rush out of the halls with the Mobinis escaping on their own in the chaos. After losing the robots, Sally and Rosie make an effort to find and free the soldiers that surrendered.

In the dungeons, the soldiers and various maintenance staff of the castle were stuffed into large capsules with a yellow button on top. The soldiers who struggled were beaten into submission before being slammed into the capsules, usually to ensure compliance. Once one was full, the capsule closed shut.

Egg Robo 1: "Transport ready. Take them to Grape Vineyard Base."

Another Egg Robo approached as the capsule leaves via a transport tank going through a large tunnel while an empty capsule rolled in for another transport.

Egg Robo 2: "New orders received. We must find the Princess of Acorns and retake the Chaos Emerald from her. Deadly force is authorized."

Egg Robo 1: "Affirmative. Deadly force is authorized."

With that, the second Egg Robo leaves to keep the captured Mobians in check, one of them shouting out, a deer buck with long antlers in royal guard uniform attire.

Deer: "You heartless monsters! Don't you dare lay a hand on the Princess!"

The Egg Robo, as emotionless as it was cruel, pulls out its laser gun and fires a laser right through the deer's head, instantly killing him.

Egg Robo 1: "Any further disturbances will be met with equal results. Move along quietly."

The captives watched on in horror at their dead comrade, some even shedding tears. But as they did as they ordered, an arrow flies at the robot and stabs their gun, destroying it. The Egg Robo is confused but then sees its fellow Egg Robos being sliced apart, the head of one tossed by Sally at the one whose gun was destroyed, decapitating it and effectively destroying it. The Egg Robo driving the transport is immediately shot by an arrow from Rosie, who goes through the window and kicks it out the adjacent door, destroying it from the impact. The captive soldiers all smile as they see Sally.

Soldiers: "Princess!"

Sally: "Soldiers loyal to the Acorn Family, you need to evacuate as soon as you gather your strength! The city is lost, but we will not lose hope!"

Some of the soldiers explain the situation to Sally and the condition of the city, which leaves her heartbroken. But she shakes her head and takes a deep breath.

Sally: "Gather as much of the guard that you can. Escape through the tunnel they made by pretending to be captured. Once you are outside, run to the nearest hiding spot and await further orders. And make sure you are not caught."

Soldier: "But what about you and Rosie?"

Sally: "We're going to save as much of the city as we can. And I'm going to find my father and the other royals."

With that, Sally helped the soldiers escape by having a few disguise themselves as Egg Robos and use the transport to leave. Once they were out of sight, Sally and Rosie made themselves scarce and hoped that the soldiers would be okay when they pass by the next transport.

Sally and Rosie continue their fight through the castle, eventually reaching the outside area, which had all kinds of other kinds of robots around, mostly shaped like bugs. A few airborne Buzzbombers shot down at them, but Rosie used her arrows to shoot them down. A couple of Slicers launched their scythes at Sally, but the princess knocked them aside before cutting the robots open.

Rosie: "They truly do have the city under their control… Princess, what do you think?"

Sally: "My dad and Queen Aleena never give up, right? Why should we?"

The ground begins to shake a bit before the concrete breaks apart. Several Caterkillers and Orbinauts appear from the ground, coming to intercept Sally and Rosie.

Sally: "And I thought the egg shaped jerks looked ridiculous…"

Rosie: "Be careful, princess… Ridiculous doesn't always mean easy to deal with."

The Orbinauts shot their spike balls at the duo, causing them to split as Rosie fired some retaliation shots at the floating orbs. A caterkiller quickly came at the girl though and pinched her side hard enough to draw blood, causing her pain, but the bite subsided when Sally slashed her sword, destroying the robot worm.

Sally: "Rosie! Are you okay?"

Rosie: "Just a scratch. I'll be fine."

Another caterkiller attack interrupted their brief chat, with Sally beheading the robot before kicking it at the two Orbinauts, destroying them. Once the area was cleared, Sally went back to check on her friend.

Rosie: "I'll be fine. I'm not losing that much blood to be a hindrance… We need to concentrate on our mission…"

Sally: "Right… While I did say we'd find my dad, he'd never forgive me if I didn't think of the citizens first…"

Rosie: "He may be okay. As an important figure, it'd be foolish to just get rid of him. That is assuming the villain we are facing is smart enough to realize that…"

Rosie whispered that last part to herself, but Sally heard her regardless. Despite this, Sally was confident her father would be okay and decided to leave it at that. Duo then went about freeing as many of Mobotropolis' citizens as they could, managing pretty well with the groups of enemies. The freed Mobians were snuck into the sewer system, which, as far as Sally and Rosie were concerned, was untouched. They met up once they cleared their sections of the city.

Rosie: "This seems almost too easy, Sally… I am getting very worried."

Sally: "Easy or not, we need to concentrate on helping the city. Come on!"

Sally dashed down the streets, Rosie following, but then started to pant feeling tired. Sally notices this and slows down.

Sally: "Rosie! What's wrong!? We need to go!"

Rosie: "I'm coming, princess. I'll be right-"

The duo then see a missile coming at Sally. Rosie shot at the missile with an arrow, forcing it to hit the ground closer to her, the force of it knocking her through a set of walls, burying her under rubble.

Sally: "Rosie!"

Sally was about to run over to check on her, but a laser blast stops her as a mob of robots approach. With gritted teeth, Sally makes a silent prayer that Rosie was okay before retreating into the shadows…
