Rotom Pokedex Upgrade
The next morning, the Eds, Sarah, and Jimmy woke up. They left their room and headed to the cafeteria.
"Oh, Edd, Sarah." said the nurse as the group walked past her, getting Edd and Sarah's attention. She holds out Chansey's pokeball in one hand and Pikipek and Spinarak's pokeballs in the other. "Your Pokemon are fully healed now." Edd and Sarah walked over to the nurse and took the pokeballs.
"Thank you, ma'am." said Edd.
"Thanks." said Sarah.
"You're very welcome." said the nurse. They continued walking to the cafeteria and entered. They were soon sitting at a table, eating breakfast.
"So what's the plan today, sockhead?" asked Eddy.
"I think we should walk over to Professor Kukui's lab to see if he finished Sarah and Jimmy's passports." said Edd.
"Good idea, Double-D." said Sarah.
"I hope we can find more Pokemon." said Ed.
"I want to keep training my Pokemon some more." said Sarah.
"Me, too." said Jimmy.
"That's the spirit." said Edd. "If you maintain a positive attitude, maybe one of you will win the junior division."
"Yeah!" said Jimmy. Soon, they finished eating and put their trays on top of a garbage bin where people leave their used trays to be picked up for cleaning and left the Pokemon Center. They soon reached Route 1.
"So, where's this lab supposed to be?" asked Eddy. Edd points down a path going south of Route 1.
"I believe it's somewhere down this path." said Edd.
"Well then, let's go." said Eddy. They walk down the path and start walking through tall grass. As Jimmy was walking, he hears rustling. He turns towards where the rustling sound was coming from and a blue, squid-like Pokemon floats up from the grass.
"What's this Pokemon?" asked Jimmy. Edd takes out his Rotom Pokedex and points it at the Pokemon.
"Inkay, the Revolving Pokemon. When exchanging information with others of its kind, it flashes the light-emitting spots on its body in a complex rhythm." said the Rotom Pokedex.
"Would you like to catch this Pokemon, Jimmy?" asked Edd.
"I'd love to, Double-D." replied Jimmy. He pulls out Riolu's pokeball. "I choose you, Riolu." He throws Riolu's pokeball and releases him. "Riolu, use Quick Attack!" Riolu runs at Inkay with incredible speed and rams into it, knocking it back. Inkay floats toward Riolu quickly and pecks Riolu with its beak, causing super effective damage. "Riolu, Metal Claw!" The round bumps on his forepaws glow white and grow, forming claws and he leaps at Inkay. Inkay suddenly created a round, rainbow-colored barrier in front of it and Riolu slashes it, knocking Inkay back. Riolu begins bulking up.
"Good work, Jimmy. Metal Claw made Riolu's attack strength stronger." said Edd. Inkay flies at Riolu and rams into him.
"Riolu, Quick Attack!" said Jimmy. Riolu dashes at Inkay and rams it, landing a critical hit, knocking it back. Two transparent tentacles on top of the Inkay stretched out towards Riolu and they wrap around him and began squeezing him. "Use Metal Claw again!" Riolu slashes Inkay with both claws again, knocking it to the ground. Jimmy pulls out an empty pokeball, enlarges it and throws it at the Inkay, hitting it. It gets sucked into the pokeball and it wiggled around for a few seconds until it stops and clicks, indicating its capture. Jimmy walks over to Inkay's pokeball and picks it up. "Yay! I caught an Inkay!" The Eds and Sarah walk over to Jimmy.
"Congratulations, Jimmy." said Edd. He takes out the Rotom Pokedex and uses it to learn about Jimmy's new Inkay. "It says your Inkay is a girl, she knows, Tackle, Peck, Constrict, and Reflect, and she has an ability called Contrary.
"What does that do?" asked Jimmy.
"Let's say a Pokemon used Growl on Inkay. Normally, that move would weaken a Pokemon's attack strength, but if it's used on a Pokemon with that ability, it would strengthen that Pokemon's attack strength instead. Same goes for its defense and speed." explained Edd.
"Wow!" said Jimmy. They continue to walk until they soon reach what looked like a small, beat up-looking house.
"Is this supposed to be Professor Kukui's lab?" asked Edd.
"Professor Rowan's place was a lot bigger." said Eddy. Edd notices Lillie standing in front of the house.
"Greetings, Lillie." said Edd with a blush. Lillie turns and sees the Eds' group.
"Oh. Hello, everyone." said Lillie.
"Pardon me; but is this Professor Kukui's lab?" asked Edd.
"Yes. It may not be what you expected, but this is Professor Kukui's lab." said Lillie. Just then, they hear a lot of noise coming from inside the house.
"Oh yeah, Rockruff! Let's go! Give it everything you've got! My body is ready. Woo!" everyone heard Professor Kukui's voice say, followed by a lot of crashing. Everyone looked surprised.
"Umm. What's going on in there?" asked Jimmy.
"Oh. That's how Professor Kukui studies Pokemon attacks; he has them use them on himself." said Lillie, surprising everyone.
"Isn't that a bit reckless?" asked Edd.
"That's just how he does his research." said Lillie. Just then, they hear more crashing coming from inside. Lillie lets out a sigh. "Looks like there's more cleaning I'll have to do."
"Why should you have to clean it? He made the mess; let him clean it." said Eddy.
"Well. I've been staying here for a few months now." said Lillie.
"You live here?" asked Edd.
"Yes. Professor Kukui has been kind enough to let me stay here." said Lillie. "Helping clean up after his research is the least I can do in return."
"I see." said Edd.
"Come inside. Professor Kukui has been expecting you five." said Lillie. Before entering, Edd looks around the area and sees several large rocks blocking what appeared to be a cave entrance. They all then go to the front door and enter the house. They look around and see the nice layout of the lab. It had a living room, small kitchen area, a loft, and a really big aquatic tank. They also see several Pokemon such as a Rockruff that was standing near Professor Kukui, and two others the Eds didn't recognize. A pink and brown bearlike one, and a dark pink Pokemon with a blue collar around its neck. Edd takes out the Rotom Pokedex and points it at the bearlike one.
"Stufful, the Flailing Pokemon. Stufful hates to be hugged or touched in any way. It will squirm, thrash, and resist with amazing power." said the Rotom Pokedex. Ed looks at Stufful with adoration in his eyes.
"He looks so cuddly!" said Ed as he runs over to Stufful, picks it up, and starts hugging it.
"Ed! The pokedex said that Stuffuls don't like being hugged!" said Edd. As Ed hugged the Stufful, it squirmed and thrashed around like the Rotom Pokedex described until it threw Ed into a wall. The Stufful ran off somewhere after that. Ed comes out of the wall with a look of disappointment on his face. Edd then points the Rotom Pokedex at the dark pink Pokemon.
"Snubbull, the Fairy Pokemon. In contrast to its appearance, it's quite timid. When playing with other puppy Pokémon, it sometimes gets bullied." said the Rotom Pokedex.
"It doesn't really look like a fairy." said Sarah. Professor Kukui turns and notices the Eds, Sarah, and Jimmy.
"Alola, everyone." said Professor Kukui.
"Alola, Professor Kukui." replied Edd. Professor Kukui turns to Lillie.
"Thanks for getting them for me, Lillie." said Professor Kukui.
"Of couse, however I can help." said Lillie. "I am supposed to be your assistant, right?" Professor Kukui looks at Rockruff.
"Rockruff's moves were just so stylin', and I was making good progress with my research." said Professor Kukui. He then reaches into his coat pocket and pulls out two Trainers Passports. "Sarah, Jimmy, I believe you were expecting these." He gives one to Sarah and the other to Jimmy.
"Thanks, Professor Kukui." said Sarah.
"We promise to take care of these." said Jimmy.
"I know you will." said Professor Kukui. He then turns to Edd.
"Double-D, may I see the pokedex for a second?" asked Professor Kukui. Edd takes the Rotom Pokedex out of his backpack and hands it to Professor Kukui.
"Certainly, may I ask why?" asked Edd.
"You see, there's actually a Pokemon inside your pokedex called Rotom." said Professor Kukui.
"A Pokemon inside the pokedex?" asked Edd.
"Yes. Rotom is a peculiar Pokemon with a body made up of electricity." said Lillie. "It can take residence inside machines."
"Fascinating." said Edd.
"Yeah, and to put that crazy skill of Rotom's to work, it's the next generation of pokedexes, but it's only complete once Rotom has gone into this body specially developed for it." said Professor Kukui. "A whole new way for people and Pokemon to communicate."
"Remarkable." said Edd.
"And there's only a few of these beauties out in the world so far." said Professor Kukui. "Now if I use these parts that I recently acquired to power it up..." He then turns and starts modifying the Rotom Pokedex. Suddenly, an orange Pokemon with a light blue aura with lightning bolts coming out of it suddenly appears.
"Cool!" said Ed.
"Hey now!" said Professor Kukui. "Sorry about that, Rotom. Guess I surprised you?"
"So that's a Rotom?" asked Edd.
"Yes. It's part ghost type and part electric type." said Professor Kukui.
"Fascinating." said Edd. Professor Kukui then looks at Rotom.
"Here, boy! I powered up your favorite 'Dex!" said Professor Kukui. "Give these kids here a Helping Hand, yeah?" The Rotom stares at the pokedex before flying into it. Professor Kukui then does some more modifications, the Rotom Pokedex flies out of his hands and over to the Eds, revealing it now had arm-like appendages.
"Uh, hey there! P-Pleasure to meet you!" said the Rotom Pokedex, surprising the Eds, Sarah, and Jimmy. "I-I'm not nervouzzz or anything, OK?!"
"It talks!" said Ed with excitement.
"This is an amazing achievement!" said Edd with equal excitement.
"Wow!" said Sarah. Professor Kukui laughs at the group's reactions.
"As you already figured out, Rotom can now talk directly to you." said Professor Kukui. "It may take a little while to get used to its new job, but I'd say that Rotom has taken a liking to all of you!"
"I like him already!" said Ed.
"How will this help?" asked Lillie.
"These kids haven't been in Alola long." replied Professor Kukui. "So, I'm giving them this special Rotom Dex to help them navigate around."
"Thank you very much, Professor Kukui." said Edd. Ed turns to the Rotom Dex.
"Nice to meet you, Rotom!" said Ed.
"Nice to meet you, too! I hope I can be of use to you!" said the Rotom Dex. It then flies into Edd's backpack.
"Now before I forget, I have to take your pictures for your Trainer Passports." said Professor Kukui. He then proceeded to take the Eds, Sarah, and Jimmy's pictures. "Give me some time to print out your pictures and I'll put them on your passports."
"Sweet!" said Eddy.
"So, what should we do in the meantime?" asked Edd.
"I want to train my Pokemon for a while." said Jimmy.
"Me, too!" said Sarah.
"Good idea." said Eddy.
"Yeah." said Ed. They all went outside to train their Pokemon. All of a sudden as soon as they stepped outside, the sky grew completely dark.
"Hey! Who turned out the lights?!" asked Eddy. A few seconds later, the sky lit up again.
"What was that?" asked Jimmy.
"Was it a solar eclipse?" asked Edd. "But I don't think there was supposed to be one today."
"What do you think it was?" asked Sarah.
"I'm not certain." said Edd. "I hope it's not a sign of dark times ahead."
"What do we do?" asked Jimmy.
"I guess we just have to wait and see what happens." said Edd.
"Well, if something's gonna happen; I want to train my Pokemon so we'll be ready." said Eddy.
"Yeah!" said Ed.
