RobStar Week 2021, Day 7 - Together
The blaring klaxons screeched in his ears, the cabin flashing red with warning lights, as a droning alien voice from the computer trilled out what sounded like a status update every other minute.
Robin strained against the metal bands holding him down, desperately trying to slip free so he could run to the controls and turn the crashing ship. One of the bounty hunters was slumped over the panel, unconscious or stunned from the initial blast, the other had abandoned ship as soon as they started losing altitude.
His communicator had been beeping nonstop like crazy in his belt, but he couldn't answer it, couldn't even turn his wrists in the steel-like bands that pinned him against the ship wall at the back of the cockpit. His eyes were fixed on the windows, gaze filled with the terrifying sight of Jump City's silver rooftops and skyscrapers rapidly filling the viewport.
No no no!, he begged. Where was Raven? Had she recovered from the stun blast the bounty hunters had hit her with when they'd blown open OPS's front window? Could Beast Boy transform into something large enough and strong enough to redirect his course? Was Cyborg in the T-ship now, running calculations? Was Starfire—?
As he thought it, there came a hard metal slam into the left side of the ship. Robin's teeth rattled as his head was knocked against the wall mount.
Metal protested and groaned, the cockpit shuddering, the impact point buckling inwards as the ship slowly leaned.
Robin felt a shot of relief ping through him as the buildings slid out of sight in the window, rapidly approaching banks of trees taking their place.
His relief immediately faded as his stomach sank. The ship was descending way too fast; there wasn't enough time to—
With a loud CRAAACK! the glass in the viewport shattered, blown open by a precise starbolt. Robin gasped as tiny shards whipped around in the rushing roaring wind now blasting against his face, pinching his eyes closed and flinching, bracing as best he could.
Something moved in front of him, shielding him from the wind, and then hands were cupping his face.
He opened his eyes to Starfire's worried expression, wordlessly pleading for him to hold on. She glanced quickly over her shoulder, then dropped her hands to the first metal cuff.
She pulled.
Robin felt his throat tightening, choking with sour bile, watching the ground spiral towards them with furious speed.
"Star..." he choked out.
She pulled harder, straining the joint. The otherworldly metal put up unusual resistance but, ultimately, broke under her alien strength.
She dropped the pieces. Her hands flashed to the other band.
"Just go!" he begged her. "You don't have enough time to get me out!"
She scowled, snarling in fury as she snapped the other band, flinging it away. "No!" she shouted. "I will not leave you!"
She floated herself almost parallel to him, taking his shoulders with utter seriousness, gripping his sleeves in her fingers tightly.
"Do you trust me?" she whispered.
His terrified eyes flicked towards the broken viewport and the wall of trees beyond, then fixed on her with a swallow.
He leaned forward out of the wall mount, throwing arms around her tightly, pressing his face against her neck.
She braced her feet on the wall on either side of him, preparing to rip his ankles through the last restraints. Her back glowed, starbolt energy curling around her, arcing, forming a searing barrier against the howling wind. The sheer force whipped her hair around their heads, tangling it hopelessly. She could almost feel the heat off the ground as it rushed up to meet them.
She gripped Robin tighter, counting down in her head, expanding her bubble of starbolt energy, timing it just right...
CRUNCH!
The nose of the ship slammed into the rocks and dirt with a horrifically solid impact. The reverberations vibrated up the body of the ship and that was when Starfire uncoiled her legs, using the shock to push off, snapping the bands around Robin's ankles and propelling them straight through the glassless viewport like a streaking rocket.
BA-BOOM!
The ship crumpled and tore behind them. Robin gave a tightly muffled whimper as pain flared across his feet, certain he'd broken at least a couple bones yanking them through the restraints, but he held on tightly to Starfire, clinging to her, the heat of her starbolt shield burning on his arms and fire flaring against his back as fuel ingited and exploded.
Starfire didn't stop, jetstreaking away from the crash with furious speed until she hit the ground, skidded, bounced off with a grunt, her arms clutching him even tighter, pressing him to her chest as she hit again and slid, dirt flying away from their sides and wake until they slowed.
Robin was shaking as they came to a stop, every limb trembling, heart tight, lungs almost afraid to release the breath he was holding.
He forced himself to exhale, and then wheezed heavily as he gasped, the adrenaline still exploding inside his head.
For a long moment, all he could do was lay there on top of her, feeling her chest heave as both of them panted, breathlessly.
Very, very carefully, she began to loosen her death grip around him.
Robin's heart thudded heavily inside his chest as she released him, letting him have the space to shift up onto his elbows, stare down at her tremulously, still processing, still coming to terms with the fact that he was alive and not a bloody smear against the wall of the bounty hunters' ship.
Her hands slid up his cheeks, green eyes aching with worry and concern.
"Are you okay?" she asked in a strained, small voice, that sounded as frightened as he'd felt.
His next exhale was halfway between a sob. "Yeah..." he breathed out, collapsing back down on her like a limp wet dishtowel and pressing his face into her shoulder, embracing her again, this time out of pure relief.
He was. He would always be.
As long as they were together.
