Last time on Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic and Aleena left the Kingdom of Snow to head to the Kingdom of Acorn, much to Sonic's chagrin. During the flight, the young hedgehog jumped out mid flight, scaring his mother as she pressed on to their destination, unknowingly getting caught up in the events that would transpire. Sonic meanwhile would go on his own journey in South Island, helping a goat girl named Lam in order to save her village.
Somewhere on South Island, many miles away from Sonic and Lam's location, Omelette is seen hanging upside down in a tree, swirls in her eyes as her chest compartment was open, revealing a phone inside. Her Egg Mobile was on the ground next to the tree, upside down and smoking from the kick Sonic gave it. As the girl remained dazed, the phone in her chest woke her up, leading to her adjusting her glasses and picking up.
Omelette: "Hellooo~ The best daughter of Lord Ivo Robotnik speaking~"
Sage: "Omelette. Why did you not pick up your communicator in your Egg Mobile?"
Omelette: "Oh… Um… Hi, Sage… About that… I might have ran into a bit of a snag…"
Omelette is met with silence, one which told her that Sage was judging her now.
Omelette: "Look! I'm fine! No road is ever straight, there's gonna be bumps and cracks and-"
Sage: "Is the Chaos Emerald still in your possession?"
Omelette: "Well yes. It's back at the Scrap Brain Base. Nice and cozy on a soft red pillow, ready to be delivered to Daddy."
Sage: "Unfortunately, Lord Robotnik has been left incapacitated. Not like that delays anything, but it is highly recommended that you keep the Chaos Emerald and not lose it. Or else…"
Omelette: "Such a brat… Fine! Not like I wasn't going to do that anyways…"
Omelette hangs up before kicking the branch she was stuck on to free herself, causing her to crash head first onto the ground. She jumps back onto her feet, straightening her hair before kicking the Egg Mobile back upright. She then contacts the Scrap Brain Base.
Omelette: "Omelette to Scrap Brain Base. Prepare for my arrival. If those annoyances do come to my base, they are in for a rude awakening. Mwehehehe~"
Within a landscape filled with lava and ruins, Sonic and Lam stopped to check out the sights. Despite being a native to the island, this was apparently Lam's first time to the ruins.
Sonic: "Not very used to the place?"
Lam: "Sorry, Sonic. Don't mean to look like I just found a diamond on the floor, but I typically avoid ruins like these. According to the old elder, these ruins just seem to have an evil aura about them."
Sonic looked at one of the pillars and placed a hand on one of them, feeling the stone a bit.
Sonic: "This is no basic stone. In fact, it doesn't feel like any stone on Mobius. The marble is… very strange."
Lam: "Alien-like?"
Sonic: "Yeah. Though how is it that you avoided these ruins exactly?"
Lam: "Long story short, we're a brand of Mobians that scooted away during the early Acorn Wars over three centuries ago. Our great grandmas and grandpas didn't want to be involved in the conflict so we just moved to an uninhabited island and called it home."
Sonic: "Here, in other words."
Lam: "That's right. And we've gone undisturbed since. Well… Until recently."
Sonic laughs nervously, but then starts to think back to him leaving the plane. If South Island was under attack then was the Kingdom of Acorn the same way? The guilt of him leaving the plane started to swell up before Lam took notice.
Lam: "Oi. Sonic. You okay, lad?"
Sonic: "Huh? Oh. Yeah. Just… thinking about some things."
Lam: "Get your mind in the game; we're about to head under."
Lam points to an opening underground. The path above ground seemed too steep to continue on foot so going down did seem necessary. This did get Sonic's mind off the guilt as he smirked with the thrill of adventure.
Under the ruins, Sonic and Lam could find more robots, this time in the form of bats and caterpillars, crawling about, but they hadn't noticed them yet.
Lam: "More of them metal bozos… Guess they took an interest in these ruins…"
Sonic: "Yeah well… They aren't mucking around here for too much longer. …Your accent is rubbing off me."
Lam: "You saying I talk weird?"
Sonic starts sweating as he looks away, immediately dashing at the robots and destroying them. Lam rolled her eyes before ramming her horns into the Caterkillers that tried to attack Sonic and shove them into the nearest wall.
Sonic: "Whoa! Talk about using your head!"
Lam: "You think the horns are just for show, my boyo? I've been ramming my head on things since I was a little girl. Folks say I'm stubborn - nah, just hard headed."
Sonic saw some Batbrains try to sneak in a swooping dive on Lam; reacting quick, he jumped on Lam's head and Spin Jumped into the Badniks, smashing them open. Lam wasn't too thrilled by her being used as a springboard, which she made clear with her disapproving look. Sonic just chuckles as he rubs the back of his head. The duo made their way through the ruins, Lam deciding to bring up a question during the break in the action.
Lam: "So that girl from before went on and on about some fancy thing called a Chaos Emerald. What's that about?"
Sonic: "Chaos Emerald? Yeah, I did hear about that when I helped out. I'm not sure to be honest, since those things were just jewelry to me."
Lam: "So their precious stones? …Actually, I guess being called 'Emeralds' makes sense then…"
Sonic: "I've only ever saw one - the one in Castle Acorn. Sally showed it to me once and… well… I know their significance because my mother kept telling me about them, but they really just look like big diamonds for a ring."
Lam: "I wonder why that girl would attack a whole island for a single rock then. Unless those things are supposed to be more valuable than we're giving them credit for…"
Sonic: "I'm not sure… Either way, the sooner we save your village, the better, right?"
Lam: "Heh. You're speaking my language, boyo!"
Lam scratches the ground before breaking down a wall, only to find, on the other side, a large river of lava, which she barely kept herself from falling into. Sonic approaches the edge and notices some floating platforms over the lava. He eyes his partner, who gives him an eye roll before they both jump out towards the platforms. As they got ready to cross the next platform, Lam grabs Sonic as a lava fall almost caught him.
Sonic: "Whoa… This place doesn't mess around…"
Lam: "Another reason why we don't come around here; it's just too dangerous with all the lava pits."
Sonic: "Noted…"
The duo continue on their way, being careful of the lava pools before hopping back onto solid ground… only to narrowly avoid falling spikes from the ceiling and spikes from the walls.
Lam: "Seriously!? What the hell did aliens need to protect with spikes!?"
Sonic: "Come on!"
Sonic jumps onto the flat end of the ceiling spike trap, letting it raise him and Lam when he helped her on up the next level above. They jump off to find themselves out of harm's way. Lam takes a moment to rest against a wall.
Lam: "Sonic… Give me a moment… I desperately need to let the heart rest…"
Sonic: "Sure. I don't mind. I'm guessing you don't go adventuring all that much?"
Lam: "Actually I want to. Explore the world, visit the big cities, maybe even spoil myself with a shopping spree. They all sound cool in my opinion."
Sonic: "Well what's stopping you? I'm sure boats pass by here every so often."
Lam: "It isn't that easy… The village elder is against involving any of us to the outside world due to the wars of the past. And sad to say, but I think this adventure may only damage any further chances of going to other places."
Sonic: "Hehe! Then be like me and be a rebel! You're a pretty nice girl and a pretty strong one at that! I'd say you'd do amazingly in the wide open world!"
Lam: "You think so?"
Lam lets out a laugh before considering the idea of being a rebel against the system. But as she thought about it, she suddenly falls over thanks to the wall behind her collapsing. Sonic rushes over and finds her on the floor.
Sonic: "Yo! Are you okay, Lam?"
Lam: "Only thing hurting is my everything… Ow…"
Sonic: "Yeah, you're okay…"
Sonic looked around the dark room and tried finding some kind of light switch. He touches a glowing part of the wall, causing a fixture in the center to glow to life. He and Lam are then met with images of some kind on the walls. Or perhaps they were an alien language. Lam examined the alien letters but she of course couldn't make heads or tails of it.
Lam: "Looks like the alien theory was correct. Though what shocks me is the lack of growth or vegetation on the ruins… You notice that?"
Sonic: "Now that you mention it, outside the surface, it has been clean… Almost like the ruins themselves were killing off the vegetation… Lam. I'm normally not one to get nervous, but… I think we should leave."
Lam: "Yeah… Good idea…"
The two then leave through the hole they fell into, unaware that the light fixture was flashing now… as if it were a beacon… But to where and to what?
The duo eventually found their way on the other side of the ruins, Lam sighing as she did not want to go through that mess again.
Sonic: "Well… They always say to feel the burn."
Lam: "I don't think they mean literally…"
As the two take a breather, they see a cargo ship fly by above. It was piloted by a robot it seemed. Lam looked ahead and saw where it was going, making her glare with a bit of fury.
Lam: "No way… Did they turn that into their new base of operations, those tin cans!?"
Sonic: "Lam? What's up?"
Lam: "Let's hurry, Sonic. They made this super personal now…"
Lam ran ahead, with Sonic following behind towards a city of some kind. The Spring Yard awaited them…
To be continued…
