A few hours later, William was in his quarters, meditating, before Gavan's Glory II's computer came on his mind. "Grand Shield, the desktop theme update procedure has been completed," it said—now speaking with a familiar-sounding female voice.
"Sofia?!" William said.
"No, but Grand Pioneer did allow me to copy her voice print for interactivity purposes," the new voice said. "As I stated, the control room's desktop theme is now updated as you requested."
"Koska to Battle-Father William," Koska said. "Emperor Jonathan and Empress-in-Waiting Kenzie are waiting for you in the cargo bay on the Tempest."
"Tell them that I will be along in a few moments," William said.
"As you wish it, Battle-Father," Koska said.
William then turned his attention back to the new voice of Gavan's Glory II. "What shall I call you?" William asked.
"You can call me by the name M.A.J.E.L.," the voice said. "It is short for Multi-Asset Joint Engineering Loader."
"Very well...M.A.J.E.L.," William said. "Now, if you'll excuse me..."
William made himself disappear in red mist...reforming in the cargo/landing bay on the Tempest. Ryder, J.M. and Kenzie were there waiting for him.
"Sorry if I kept you two waiting, Your Majesty," William said. "I just had some things to do in order to get Gavan's Glory II ready for your visit."
"That's all right, King William," J.M. said. "Shall we get going?"
William smiled at J.M. and Kenzie before leading them to the embarkation hatch.
"Open 'er up, M.A.J.E.L.," William thought.
The doors hissed open to reveal the gleaming new control room. Four walkways leading to other doors surrounded the central control pedestal.
"In preparation for your visit, I had the computer initiate a procedure to update the central control room," William said. "M.A.J.E.L., please overlay the previous control room design temporarily."
A holographic overlay of the previous control room design appeared for a moment, then dissolved.
"Who is MA.J.E.L.?" J.M. asked.
A holographic projection of a human female appeared in front of William, J.M. and Kenzie. "I am the embodiment of Gavan's Glory II's computer systems," M.A.J.E.L. said. "While Grand Shield—King William—and Grand Pioneer—Queen Sofia, William's wife—can communicate directly with me via telepathy, I can project this avatar to interact with other crew personnel or other visitors, such as yourselves."
"It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance, M.A.J.E.L.," Kenzie said. "While we're here, I would like to examine your systems in order to see what makes you tick."
"If Grand Shield permits it, I will give you full access to my systems," M.A.J.E.L. said.
Kenzie turned to look at William, a pleading expression on her face. "Fine with me. We're comrades in the battle with the A.I.C.," William said. "If you and the rest of the Saints are to help us, you need to know everything you can learn to do your duty."
Kenzie hugged William. "Thank you! Thank you!" Kenzie said.
William then turned to J.M. "I assume that you briefed the rest of the Saints about the A.I.C.," William said.
"I did," J.M. said. "They're waiting for us in the central briefing room on the Ka-Mahshuv."
William turned his attention to the M.A.J.E.L. projection. "MA.J.E.L., let me know if you or Kenzie need anything," William said.
"Understood, Grand Shield," M.A.J.E.L. said.
William led J.M. off of Gavan's Glory II.
