School Days: A New Life

Episode 2 – Confession – Part 1

Yuuki Ashikaga.

The "protagonist" of his own spin-off game, Cross Days stood right before me. His was a story that I shouldn't dwell on. But the mere fact that I met him here either entails he'll appear at some point and interfere as he did for "Katsura's sake" or he'll do his own thing. But right now I'd rather not dwell on that potential future for too long.

I mean Yuuki, bless his soul was a good kid, but his actions if anything just added more confusion to a fire that already burning too out of control by the time he appeared on the scene. If it wasn't for that unrequited crush of his he had for Katsura then things might be as they are, but…

With that small stature and his already feminine looks, one thing would lead to another and one of his hairbrained schemes would get him entangled even further in not only a web of lies trying to expose Makoto as a floozy. But since his story never came to America and even though I had read the manga I knew that was only one of possibly tens of endings he could have.

Leaving it at that I headed up to the sink and began washing my hands with whatever foliage styled soap they had and finally made my way back to the classroom. Which to no shock of my own, I had returned tardy, but the English teacher had mercy on me as she understood my situation and as I returned to my desk I got a wave from Sekai and Makoto and returned it on kind.

As I looked over I could see in their journals many of the scribbled notes they had hidden in the corner of their books. Ah, the joys of high school gossiping in the middle of class without getting caught.

With the bell finally signaling lunch I stretched as did many of the other students while some took off out the door still unknown to this foreign environment and not wanting to look like a chicken with its head cut off I decided to ask my two new "friends" if I could join them.

"Hey, you guys, if you don't mind me asking, where do you go for lunch?" I inquired, I knew where they were headed but I didn't want to feel like I was either intruding without their permission or being nosy.

"Well I usually head for the cafeteria to buy our school's bread. But even then it can be a bit crowded in there even though some students eat their lunch in the classroom." Makoto replied.

"Well the way I see it, I think we should invite our new friend. Besides, I think we should at least give him a good surprise. We just so happen to have a special spot." Sekai spoke up in her usual excited tone. But as I looked to Makoto I could tell he seemed unsure.

If she's referring to their "special spot" then during one of the breaks Makoto confronted her about his crush on Kotonoha. Hah, if only I could've been there to be in the middle of it. I could've had a front row seat to that. Oh well, curse my fate for having to pee so badly.

"You wouldn't mind if I eat with you guys right? I think my Mom, might've packed a bit too much and I really don't know my way around here that much." I said modestly trying to look as sincere as I could.

"W-well… I guess so." Makoto's unsure tone remained as he gave his okay.

While I would probably take the time to interrogate both of them about each other I also don't want them to be suspicious of me.

"So Callahan, why'd you and your parents move her to Japan?" I heard Sekai inquire as we all sat down to eat our respective lunches.

"It was a work offer my mom was given from her company in America to transfer here. My dad…" I didn't say anything after that. I guess even this universe kept that aspect of my real life intact.

"Oh… sorry I didn't mean to bring up something like that." Sekai said apologetically.

"No, no it's alright. My Dad passed away when I was a kid, I don't even remember his face. But the pictures we still are enough for me…" I replied with a small smile which she reciprocated with one of her own.

"You know for a foreigner you can speak really good Japanese. Most foreigners I've seen either speak it very brokenly or just know a few words." Makoto changed the topic.

"Yeah, it's embarrassing really but I've always wanted to learn a different language. So out of all of them I chose Japanese, and No, it's not because I'm some anime otaku or whatever…" I said a bit defensively.

"Oh? We wouldn't find any posters hanging up in your room now would we? ~" Sekai said with her teasing cat-like smirk.

"Don't play into her games Cal, she may look nice, but she's really just an ogre." Makoto replied trying to come to my defense it would seem.

"Huh?! Who're you calling an ogre!? I'm a girl thank you!" Sekai replied angrily, but I could tell in good fun.

"I don't see any girls here, do you Cal?" Makoto turned to me; this time he had the smirk on his face.

"If you answer that new kid, I'll kill you…" Don't worry I believe you, don't remind me.

"Actually guys, if you could please just call me Cal actually like Makoto said." I tell.

"Are you sure?" Sekai asked.

"Yeah, I know my names' a mouthful so just a short Cal would be much more manageable I think. But now I get to ask you guys something…" I said with a smile on my face this time as both of them have inquisitive looks?

"What?" Both of them said in unison.

"Are you two… dating?" I dropped the million-dollar, teasing question that almost everyone in this school seems to think is true.

"W-w-w-w-w-what are you talking about!? Me? Date this clown?! W-we're just friends is all!" Came out Sekai's defensive reply.

"Ha! Back at you! There's plenty of girls out there better than here like Katsu- Aah." He slipped up.

"Oh? Does Makoto… have a crush?" I inquired with a Cheshire grin.

"N-n-no! You misheard me!" Makoto tried to defend himself, but Sekai wouldn't allow that.

"Hehe, call me an ogre will you? Perhaps I should have my revenge…?" Sekai teased to reveal his crush on Kotonoha. He turned and looked at her with a look mixed with both worry and anger but having to deal with two of us he deflated and gave up.

"Hahaha! Sorry bro, looks like you gave her all the power with that one. You lose." I say teasingly.

"Ta-da! He does have a crush and she's a cute one!" Sekai pulled out her phone and showed me the picture of her and Kotonoha sitting out at P.E.

"Oh… I've seen her before…" I reveal.

"Eh, you have? When?" Makoto asks with wide eyes.

"Well I wasn't paying attention on the platform trying to find the right train line I kind of… walked into her?" I confessed with a shrug and sheepish smile.

"Real smooth ~" Sekai say once again teasingly. I'm really going to either get tired of that smile or who knows maybe I'll get a laugh out of it.

"Oh be quiet, I apologized. But I do have to say Itou, you really know how to pick 'em." I say trying to turn the conversation back on topic.

"W-well…" He said with a blush on his face. I really do feel for this kid at least in the beginning. But as I just remember on and on about all the shady things he'll do to Kotonoha to be with any of the other girls just drove me less and less to seeing him in any light whatsoever. I mean I get that these guys are teenagers, but I suppose common sense might as well be out of the window in that regards.

Even the other girls are just nasty to each other. I mean I've seen my share of catfights, but I guess more so in the sense those were actual fights and not over boys. That was mostly delving into arguments that would occasionally turn into fights, but most fights I've seen were just about two girls who were digging at each other.

As I hear them go back and forth with each other I just think of all the futures I can remember. The one's that have "good" endings, the bloodier ends for our intrepid hero and then the ones where he somehow falls for another girl entirely. But at that point… it's either he runs away, or the girls disappear…

That reminds me that I have to keep an eye on Makoto's friend… what was his name? Taisuke think it was; he was one of the reasons why some of the bad endings for either Sekai or Kotonoha would come true. But to prevent something like that; I'd have to date one of them…

Do I really have that kind of mental fortitude? With so much possible to go wrong… I would actually be putting my life in danger on some slim chance one of them goes Yandere mode…

"Hey Cal!" I hear Sekai scream at me which brings me out of my stupor.

"Y-Yeah!? W-what is it?" I say frantically.

"Would you like to join us for lunch tomorrow? You can meet Kotonoha in person and you get to make another friend too!" Sekai offered.

"W-Well… I guess so. You okay with that Makoto?" I ask the unsure looking protagonist. His blank stare I often remembered look back at from a computer screen.

"Y-Yeah, I suppose. Maybe it might be better…" His unsureness remained.

"Well then, seems everything is in order! Just leave everything to good ol' Sekai! Good to have you along, Cal!" Sekai reached out with her hand and took mine. In that moment I had no choice but to notice the softness of her hands and how smooth her skin was. It felt like a soft towel encased my hand as I stare into her eyes. The smile on her face matched her eyes, with that I knew she was being honest, surprisingly.

After that lunch we went through the rest of our classes, and everyone began to leave school. Just as I was about to get my shoes on, "Hey, new kid!"

I hear a set of giggles go off to my left as I jerked my head suddenly to see it was Otome and her group of girls who followed her around as it was Otome herself who jumped back at my sudden movement. From the high-pitched sound of that voice calling me it had to be the one with the headband.

"Eh, um…" Otomo stuttered, hoping that one of her friends would cover for her. The dark blush on her face was a puzzling sight to me, but I put it out of my head for the moment. She had always seemed more confident from what I remembered.

"Did you need something, Otome was it?" I asked directly, quite curious just what it was that she wanted with me in particular.

"I'm Katou, Otome. I-I was just wondering…" Her continued muttering at times made her hard to hear what's she saying but I didn't get irritated as I just let her talk, "I heard you used to do photography and stuff like that… what I mean is I herd you were good at taking pictures."

"Ah, well I mean sure I do but it was just more of a hobby thing, but I did at one point take some photos for my middle school yearbook back in America when their photographer got sick." I laughed as I gave my explanation which again is not a lie entirely. In fact I was part of the yearbook committee back in middle school and I was its photographer.

A smile somehow made its way to Otome's face when she heard my answer, "Oh! W-well that's great. It just so happens that we need a new photographer to take photos for the basketball club and our own photographer just moved away so… you could come to one of our practice sessions to take some photos."

Remembering Otome's nature I had my suspicions but for her to be this bubbly now though. I mean the teacher even said something about a photography club before right?

"I mean are you sure about this? I mean I don't even have a camera anymore-" I didn't even finish when Otome interrupted me.

"I have one you can use!" Otome exclaimed, but then she covered her mouth from her sudden outburst as a blush covered her cheeks from the light shade to an almost beet red. "I-I mean you can borrow one I have."

Still a bit unsettled, but to be put on the spot like this I thought about some of the possible good things to come from this; it would give me a glimpse into some of the girls, and with Otome there I could possibly see if she's really the bully she's depicted.

"Sure, I'll do it." I agreed. After I said that I could see her smile as f her body had lost a thousand-ton weight off her shoulders, and she was free from her anxiety. But why so nervous around me of all people. I'm just a normal guy; this couldn't have anything to do with that comment about how she likes foreign guys right?

"I'll see you then. Goodbye." With that I put on my shoes and began the arduous journey I had once again feared.

I gulped, "Finding the right train lines… and making it home before my Mom either kills me or calls the cops."

By the grace of god not only did I find the right train lines, but I also made it back before she came back from work. After dinner I headed for bed as I rested on my pillow and laid myself out and I finally exhaled a breath I didn't know I was holding in me.

I guess the effect of being inside a visual novel game hadn't completely set in yet, but it was both amazing, weird, and scary all at the same time…

Was I stuck here? Was I going to leave in this new universe for the rest of my life? So many questions and with where I've been dumped… I may have so little time.

(The Next Day)

Classes were going on as usual as the teacher droned on and on as students were busy either taking notes or being on their phones. I could hear the constant passing of journals as I watched Sekai and Makoto trade said "notes."

I guess this is her telling him about the lunch time she arranged with Katsura to meet him face to face.

"Haaah!?" I saw Makoto jump from his seat surprising everyone in the room and of course getting the teacher mad… again.

"Is there something wrong?" The teacher inquire annoyed once more.

"It's nothing!" Makoto announced as he sat down with his head down and sweat on his brow.

I couldn't help but chuckle at the sight as several other students sis so and Sekai maintained her poker face. I really did have to give it to this girl; she could win a jackpot based off that face alone in Vegas.

As the lunch bell came the three of us were at the bottom staircase as Sekai and I were trying to convince Makoto to come up and meet the girl of his dreams.

"Impossible! Impossible! I can't! I can't!" Makoto screamed out as I watched Sekai try to drag him upstairs. "Between yesterday and today how did this happen?!"

"We talked over the phone last night and this is how it turned out! Cal, help me!" Sekai looked over as I leaned against the wall enjoying the sight before me, but it was all a part of the plan.

"But why!?" Makoto demanded to know why he had to go.

"Do I need to have a reason to invite her to lunch?" Sekai defended herself.

"Yeah, you do! My heart's not ready for this!" Makoto exclaimed as he finally escaped the grasp of Sekai who's brow was still furrowed in anger.

"What are you saying?!" Sekai couldn't believe the drivel coming from him.

"I can't do it. My legs start shaking as soon as I even think about it." Makoto continued to argue with her as Sekai grabbed onto his sleeve once more.

"What are you talking about? If you're going to be like that, you'll never go out with her for the rest of your life! You're a man, right?!" Sekai countered.

"Not being a man is fine! I'll just spend my life watching her from afar!" Makoto once again countered.

"Then become a man! You just look like a joke!" Sekai was getting tired of this round about.

"Oh, wait that's right! I need to work on finishing my physics report!" Makoto now tried to make some kind of lame excuse.

"…" Sekai went quiet for the first time since they started arguing and it made Makoto look at Sekai who's eyes were being hidden by her bangs.

She then looked up and yelled, "Coward! Idiot! Die!" She then stamped off up the stairs and out of sight.

"Guh… isn't 'die' going a little too far?" Makoto grumbled to himself.

"Well she does kind of have a point. You go to the trouble of taking a photo of her for that charm, and you already have a crush on her; now you don't want to even meet her face to face? Coward and Idiot are right, but that's just one stop from death." I explained to him.

"Guh… what's the point. She'd probably never even like someone like me. She probably likes smarty-pants types who like books like her." Makoto lamented.

"Well then, wouldn't you be happy to know I also happen to have heard there's a guy that Kotonoha likes?" I teased him.

"Huh?" He looked at me with surprise at my offer to tell him.

"Then if you want to know, then get your butt up there!" I yelled at him as I pointed up the stairs.

He cried but dragging him along we made our way up and I decided this way the time to interrogate him about his feelings for Sekai.

"Aren't students not allowed on the roof normally?" I inquired as I interrogated the prisoner walking in front of me.

"Sekai is the president of the astronomy club; with that they gave her the keys to the roof." Makoto answered.

"That sounds rather tricky of her." I answered. "You're telling me." He answered.

You have no idea my friend… no idea at all.

"So", I asked him, "How long have you known Sekai?"

If I wanted a chance to stop any sort of trouble from coming to any of them I needed to keep him preoccupied on Katsura and keep his attention off of Sekai. If he begins to get impatient with her than who knows what dark path could start from that.

If I have to pair myself with someone to do something about if it means getting involved I may just have to do it. But do I really have what it takes? This isn't just some old virtual world anymore; this is my life as it seems as I reminded myself last night.

"I only met her back during first semester but were just friends that's all." He answered.

"Why'd to have to say that part?" I asked.

"Because some people think I'm going out with her which is stupid I alre… Wait why am I saying this?" He said catching himself just in time.

"Oh my, forbidden love already? I never thought you had it in you." I inquired which brought a worried look to his visage, a huge blush adorned his face as I had my hand to my chin.

"N-no its nothing like that!" He reacted defensively.

"So are you saying that Sekai is single?" I asked as I tried my best to look at his possibly uncomfortable face which still adorned his blush from before but not as much.

"Y-yeah, but why do you care?" He asked back. "Why should I answer back when you won't tell me about you?" I countered.

His looked like he was going to blow, seeing the situation going as it was I put up my hand in peace and replied, "Look, I'm sorry let's just go, I'm sure were both just hungry, so peace?"

I held out my hand and surprisingly he took it and replied, "Yeah, I guess sorry about that."

We opened the door to the roof which was unlocked and as we entered the beating rays of the came in hard as I shielded myself from the blinding light. As I got used to it, I focused myself as we saw the two girls that would be joining us.

A small cry came from the light as I recognized the small voice as Katsura's with Sekai probably standing beside her. Makoto immediately seized up upon seeing his crush right before his eyes and his stupefied look only made the situation even more awkward.

"K-Katsura?" He said as a wave of embarrassment washed over him seeing his crush face-to-face in such a closed environment. He immediately tried to back away for the door, but I put my foot behind him and made sure he wasn't leaving.

Leaning into his ear, "You've come this far no time like the present, now grow a set and talk to her."

"W-what how did you?" He tried to get out, but my answer was interrupted as the shy girl tried to speak up.

"Um… umm" She tried her hardest, but eventually she did greet her greeting out, "Hello, it's nice to meet you. I'm Katsura."

"Katsura-san. It's uh… good to meet you. Although I'm sure you don't remember me." I greeted the long-haired beauty. I could see from her returning nervous look she still remembered the train accident.

But noticing her female friend's nervousness Sekai immediately took charge and directed us all towards the bench in her own pre-arranged sitting arrangement.

I knew she could be loud, but this girl always seems to be so boisterous, but is she always like this or is it some sort of façade? I knew she could be happy but that was only when things went her way and no other way.

She dictated the seating with Katsura and Makoto side by side while me and Sekai were together all on the same crowded bench. From over here it looked like everything happening was so far away. I had opened up my own lunch box and seeing inside made me give a small smile. Spaghetti, I guess maybe this life wasn't so bad.

As we ate, I noticed Katsura's occasional stares that came my way, I guess my sudden appearance here and our accident at the train station was still on her mind after all. I really hope this doesn't make things even more awkward.

She had come prepared, as her lunchbox was full to the brim with what seemed to look like homemade clean-cut sandwiches. Even with my lunch, I could still feel my appetite returning to me as I caught sight of them.

Besides my spaghetti, these were at least familiar food to me. In an effort she gave us each one to eat and joined the other two in partaking in the treat seeing as how she made so many. I guess mine was possibly an attempt at an apology which wasn't necessary.

We continued to exchange conversation and pleasantries, Makoto trying his best to talk to Katsura with me and Sekai prodding at the nervous boy or Katsura's shy nature. But for all our jokes they were all harmless only meant to have fun.

As I finally bit into my sandwich I initially didn't taste any issues until as I continued I then felt a crunch. I mean why who puts something crunchy in a sandwich? I mean I knew some who put chips but what else could it be?

However in an effort to be friendly to such an innocent soul I finished the rest of it in good spirit. But still unless this girl got better she has no business going into culinary arts or anything resembling it.

Just as I finished my two other compatriots began to then bring their own to their mouths in unison, the simultaneous crunches I heard only made the situation even more fruitful as I tried my hardest to hold myself back from laughing at their misfortune.

Seeing the chance to become a show-off as Katsura looked at their reactions, Makoto decided to the scarf down all the leftover's he could get his hands on and try to brush away the suspicion of dislike from the eyes of his love interest.

His choking however worried both of the girls as I then with my retained knowledge began to give him the Heimlich maneuver and cleared his airway and save his sorry butt. With no acknowledgement to go with it, really now so ungrateful.

"Oh I just remembered I have to go and get something from the classroom." Saionji announced as she wiped away any invisible wrinkles to her skirt. She then cast a glance my way with her brow showing a hint of worry.

"Hey, Cal? Would like to come, I can show you around the school in the meantime." I was surprised to hear my name from someone and to hear it so causally was also if not new but comforting in a sense.

"Sure, whelp see you guys!" I gathered my bento as I joined Sekai in leaving the two lovebirds to themselves.

Now stuck with the other main heroine by my side, now was time to begin my own Phase 2: Interrogate Sekai without raising suspicion.
