School Days: A New Life
Episode 3 – Confession – Part 2
"You and Makoto sure seem to be fast friends." Came a voice I nearly forgot in the moment. I chuckled softly as I replied.
"I don't think friends is the right word, just 'acquaintances' with a conflicting set of interests that is." I whispered out the last part as I didn't want her to think that I had some of sort mental issue of talking to myself.
But her lopsided grin that was etched on her face showed a slight degree of pity as thought I was just giving out useless babble talk to myself.
We continued on regardless passing by the cafeteria in the process. I had always wondered what Japanese lunch food was like, all I thought was it was probably better than what was made in America I can tell you that now.
"So, do we really have time to go to the classroom and back there before the next bell or…?" I tried to break the ice as she came to a complete stop. Sekai turned and replied.
"O-of course we have time, why else would I come out now?" She tried to dismiss my question with an awkward laugh but even she probably guessed was on to her. Although as she turned to face me, I couldn't get over the ahoge in her hair as I could only lightly chuckle behind a quick smile in reply to seeing it shake around.
"You know I'm surprised you let me in on putting this together. I'm practically just a stranger to you guys; so why let me help?" I asked at her. If I even tried to go farther in telling her why I should already kiss the plot goodbye and just put a game over on myself.
"To be honest, when I first met you I could feel you… ummm… Yeah, you had an honest aura around you." Sekai replied.
"So you found me trustworthy, that's all?" I replied, unconvinced. I know this girl was hiding her true feelings and now with me here in the equation I'm more than certain I was just another shield for her to hide behind so that she could hide her feelings.
Just as I know his, I know all about yours. But in this moment I'm even doubting myself. Should I really interfere here? Should I protect the relationship of Makoto and Katsura or help her get with him? I thought I already made up my mind on what to do…
"…" I said nothing. Little had it occurred to me that sometimes silence itself was a response altogether.
"Anyway, now that they're all on their own. Let's head for the cafeteria. I think you'll like them Cal. Come on." Sekai continued on as we both went past the classroom and headed for the cafeteria which reminded me just how American lunchrooms were; small, packed and so much talking you could barely hear yourself think.
As we both headed inside I heard a loud voice immediately call out in our direction, "Sekai! Over here!"
I looked over to see in particular the voice belonged to a girl with squid-rings in her brown hair, Hikari Kuroda. Across the table was two other female characters I remembered. Another was the tiny interloper herself, Setsuna Kiyoura. The last was the tallest of them; the violet haired basketball player, Nanami Kanroji.
"Sekai! Oh, it's that new guy! It's… Callahan right?" Hikari asked for my identity.
"Y-Yeah it is, it's nice to meet you." I replied in kind.
"Yeah, this is that new guy in our class. These three are my friends Cal; this is Hikari, her parents run a bakery near the station. This is Kanroji Nanami, she's a member of the girls' basketball team and she's also in our class." Sekai introduced our classmates. "And this is Kiyoura Setsuna. She's quiet, but I assure you Cal she's friendly."
"Sekai, where's Makoto?" Setsuna immediately pointed the elephant in the room. And just what the hell am I thank you? Chopped liver?
"Setsuna, you could at least say hello to Cal." Sekai tries to correct her friend.
"… It's nice to meet you. I'm Kiyoura." The short student council member said clearly annoyed.
"Nice to meet you, the name's Nanami Kanroji. Any friend of Sekai, is one of mine." Nanami introduced herself.
"I'm Hikari Kuroda, it's nice to meet you new guy. So tell me, you two seem quite frieldly already; don't tell me… are you and Sekai dating now? ~" Hikari asks cheekily with a cat-like grin on her face.
For whatever reason both of us have blushes on our faces being taken aback by her sudden statement, "O-of course not, you idiot! I'm just showing him around the school and wanted to introduce him to you guys."
"Is that so?" Hikari inquires with a sing-song voice.
"Yes!" Sekai replies clearly annoyed.
"Okay, okay… just calm down I'm just joking with you." With that both of us sit down as I join Sekai next to her.
"So Trystan, did you have any other hobbies besides photography? Any interest in sports?" Nanami was the first one to ask me a normal question.
"Yeah actually, I used to play soccer, but a bad injury forced me to sit out for the rest of the season. It really sucked since I had just been named as the starting goalkeeper." I acknowledged.
"Oh, perhaps you could look into the Sakakino soccer team? Although… we're not exactly a top-tier school in the sports league…" Nanami admitted confessed.
"Speaking from experience?" I asked with a forgiving smile. Nanami gave a small conciliatory chuckle as she replied.
"Y-yeah. Although I'm a first year too, I'm part of the basketball team so I hope that one day we can win and go all the way to the top!" Nanami said proudly.
"Well, good luck." I replied honestly.
"Kuroda, do you have any extracurricular activities her you participate in?" I inquired.
"No, I help out at my parent's bakery after school. I plan to own my own place so I have to get as much experience as I can. You should come over and I'll show you why our stuff's the best in Sakakino and don't let anyone tell you otherwise; because if you do… I kill you." Hikari declared with a proud smile.
I knew she was just kidding around, but honestly with this girl, I may just have to take her seriously sometimes…
"What about you, Kiyoura?" I finally asked the shortest among them.
"I'm a member of the student council. I'm mostly wrapped up in meetings." Setsuna simply replied.
Well it's not like I should've expected anything dynamic from someone like her at her all. But I guess hearing her speak is a reward all on it's own. But even as we're all speaking I can't help but admit that despite my previous viewing of these girls I couldn't help but admit to their normal sides as girls and students.
I know a game has scripted events, but I know for a fact this isn't one of those things. This is happening, right here and now in front of my face. These girls weren't being bullies, but I know they're just normal girl's. I know more than anything growing up that kids go through these kinds of things. Sometimes it goes extreme sure, but here it's even more.
I still have those vivid images; Makoto's bloody corpse lying motionless on the floor as Sekai's regrets flood her. Kotonoha broken and seeking her revenge… Sekai…
"Hey, Cal!?" Sekai exclaims in my ear bringing me out of my horrid stupor as I turned to reply.
"Y-Yeah? W-what is it?" I reply.
"Are you okay? You look pale all of a sudden. Do you feel sick?" Sekai asked with a frown.
"No, no not at all. I guess I might just feel a bit cold is all. Even when it's warm sometimes I'll feel cold unlike other people." I reply trying to downplay my previous thoughts.
"If you say so…" Sekai replied seemingly convinced of my answer.
"Well it's almost time to get back, so we should hurry up." Nanami points out.
"Oh yeah, we should get back we don't want Yamamoto to get onto us for being late to class." Hikari points out with a bit of panic in her voice.
With that we all pack up and head back for class where it goes about like any other day. I don't hear any notes passed between my neighbors down below so I can only assume that Makoto either asked her out on that date or the encounter went well.
No arguments here…
(End of the Day)
As the day comes to an end and everyone begins filing out. Trystan then heard a voice calling for him, "Hey, Cal!"
Trystan turned to see that it was Sekai and her friends with her, "We're going to Pure Burger for a quick bite to eat. Want to come along, it'll help you get a good sense of Sakakino-cho."
"Sure, I just hope I'm not too late. My mom hates' it when I'm not back on time for dinner." I agree putting on my tennis shoes I join the girls as we make our way to the burger joint.
"So is this place popular?" I inquire.
"Yeah, it's popular spot for students getting off of school. They always have monthly specials with interesting combos; this month's special is an Extra-Spicy Chili Burger." Hikari said with excitement tinged in her voice.
"Hehe, for someone who loves sweets you love spicy food huh?" I pointed out.
"Having a singular palettes boring; you've got to spice up things from time to time. I just hope it's still there and they haven't taken it off the menu.
And so for the rest of the time when we reached the burger shop I noticed that while Setsuna, Sekai and Hikari were talking smoothly that Nanami had her eyes glued to something in her lap.
"Kanroji-san, are you okay?" I asked her with slight worry.
She blushed as if a parent caught her doing something she wasn't supposed to, "Huh? N-no, I was just lost in thought was all."
Huh, that was weird. But for some reason, I feel like I should remember something, but it doesn't come to mind as it leaves my thoughts. Little did I know passing right by the shop was a young man with red hair and glasses traveling with a young girl his age speaking amiably together. If you caught them together, it would look just like a date.
Well after finishing our food we all decided to finally go our separate ways; however as both me and Sekai had to use the same station we walked together.
"So, how do you think things went for them?" I asked her about the two lovebirds we'd left behind.
"Well, if he's got any common sense then he'll have asked her out. But Katsura-san, hasn't said anything in a while so…" Sekai said with a slight sigh in her voice.
"Well we just have to give it some time. Not everything happens instantly." I answer her.
"Thanks for helping me in convincing him. Like I said before, he's a spinless wimp so unless he's got someone pushing him forward he won't ever do anything." Sekai says.
"No problem, besides I sit right behind you guys remember? I can hear all that note passing you two do, remember?" I say in a teasing tone.
"A-haha… I did kind of forget. Ah, here's the station. I have to go the opposite way, so your station's just down that way. See you tomorrow." With that Sekai headed up the stairs to the platform.
And it was in that moment I knew what was to come I made a choice to this day I could never explain; with the sun at it's zenith I took out my phone and pointed it at Sekai; just as she reached the top of the platform she had turned around but with the brightness of the sun I snapped the photo and caught the still moment of her.
Her bright smile and waving arm. I looked from my phone and saw her waving at me. I returned the gesture and despite what I knew was to come… I headed home.
I knew Makoto had Confessed, but now was just the beginning. The beginning of a saga, I never could've imagined…
That night whatever force compelled me to take that picture of Sekai, I put it up on my phone's wallpaper. I sat in bed after dinner looking up at the happy, smiling face of a girl who threw away her own feelings for the boy she liked.
And now here I was…
What's wrong with me?
