Chapter 2

The teenage boy bit his lip, feeling awkward as he looked down at the photos in his hands then back up at the police. He was rather tall, nearly six feet, lanky with a mass of curly black hair, brown eyes and fair toned skin. He was dressed pretty casually with his school bag slung over his shoulder.

"I um, I was hoping…" He began to say.

The officer gave him a sympathetic look. "I understand son, but...we need the photos as evidence, we've got the guy but this will make sure we can put him away."

Michael Wheeler sighed but handed the photos over.

"Alright, I'll, I'll find something else for the Bugle. Good luck with putting that guy away." He said gently.

The officer nodded and took the photos, before leaving. Mike sighed and turned away, he had thought this would have been his big break. He had found a criminal, an actual leader of a small time criminal gang, in the act of trying to break in somewhere and got pictures of him in action. He had planned on presenting the pictures to the Daily Bugle where he worked part time, hoping to get a big story.

'But the officer is right, it's more important that those pictures serve as evidence in taking down that guy for good. Without him, the gang will be in trouble, have difficulty organizing.' He reflected ruefully.

With a shrug he turned and made his way into school, heading for his first class of the day. It did not take him long to arrive in the science class and immediately moved over to sit with his friends who were already in the class.

They all looked up and saw him, smiling.

"Hey Mike, what kept you?" Max asked.

Max was a girl, Maxine Mayfield was her full name, much shorter than Mike, with medium long curly red hair and blue eyes, fair skinned and slender. Mike glanced around to the others, all boys. First was Lucas Sinclair, a tall dark skinned boy with short black hair and black eyes, he was slightly shorter than Mike, but had a little more muscle tone in his arms, then finally, Dustin Henderson, a somewhat shorter boy with a slightly chubby face, curly brown hair and brown eyes.

"I was talking to the police." He told them.

"Wait, the police?" Lucas gasped.

Dustin was wide-eyed. "Dude, what-?"

"It's nothing like that." He said quickly. "I...I took some pictures that I could've used to get Jonah off my back. But instead I needed to hand them over to the police for evidence. Put the guy away, yeah."

They shared a look at that but upon seeing Mike nodding reassuringly they let the subject go.

"Will's late, isn't he?" Dustin asked.

Mike bit his lip and looked around worriedly at that, he was right, the last member of their group, Will Byers, wasn't there. Even as Mr. Clarke entered and began the class, there was no sign of him, until about fifteen minutes after class started and the door to the class opened.

Will was grimacing as he entered the classroom, aware of all the eyes now fixed on him.

"S-sorry I'm late Mr. Clarke." He said, already feeling embarrassed.

Mr. Clarke sighed. "Will, this is the third time this week. Stay behind and we'll talk after class, take your seat."

Will nodded and took his seat next to the rest of his friends, they all looked at him with concern but he just gave them an apologetic look, offering no further explanation. He also did his best to ignore the snickering from Troy and James, the typical school bullies, from behind him. They used to torment him and the rest of his friends constantly, at least until Max had arrived when it became less overt and more vocal. Then after Will got his powers he was barely even fazed by them anymore and just ignored them. Finally class ended and the others left while Will, with a heavy sigh, made his way up to Mr. Clarke's desk.

"Mr. Clarke, I...I'm sorry, I just-"

"Will, listen, like I said, this is the third time." Mr. Clarke said. "You're a great student, your work in class is exceptional, I've never seen anyone take to these science lessons like you do. But your time-keeping needs a lot of work, please, for your sake."

Will nodded, head bowed. "I...yes sir, I'm sorry, I'll try and do better."

With that Mr. Clarke smiled and nodded reassuringly to him while signing off a slip for him to give the teacher of his next class to explain his lateness.

It wasn't until lunch time that things settled down enough for Will and the others to simply sit down together and talk.

"So Will, what happened, why were you late?" Dustin asked.

Will shook his head. "It's nothing to write home about, I just missed the train is all and the traffic was nuts due to that bank robbery."

"Whoa, dude." Lucas gasped. "That's crazy, you really were late because of that?"

Will shrugged. "I know, crazy but, it's fine, I made it, late but still, I made it."

The others nodded slowly and Will was soon caught up on what happened with Mike which surprised him greatly, nevertheless he reassured Mike just as the others had. A short while after he had done so was when he heard it.

"Aww, see that, fairy boy is clearly hoping he can win Frog-Face's heart by being oh so sympathetic."

Will rolled his eyes, noting that nobody else had heard at least, he subtly glanced to his right to see Troy, who had spoken, and James passing. Troy was looking rather disgruntled that his comment had no effect. It had clearly been meant for only Will to hear and react to, but he had given no reaction. Will just gave a small smile as he continued his lunch, that was his best revenge against those two, since he couldn't do anything else, his powers were to be used responsibly after all.

Will let out a sigh of relief. Now that school was over for the day and that there was no crimes that required his involvement right now, he was having a relaxing swing through the city, fully suited up again of course. He had parted ways with his friends who had all gone their separate ways to head home after school, he was more or less doing the same. With a smile, he landed and looked down at Mike who he saw walking along the street below. He let out a soft sigh, noting the now familiar warm feeling inside his chest.

'Mike, I...wait, oh no, seriously not good.'

As he had been watching, he noted that as Mike had taken a turn that would take him down an alley that served as a short cut to the Daily Bugle, he also saw a group of around five guys, clearly following Mike and he had a guess exactly who these guys were. He knew he had no time to think and just instantly swung down, ready to intervene.
