Chapter 3
Mike had been lost in thought, wondering how to explain things to Jonah when suddenly a large bulky man in dark clothing and an evil glare stood in his way.
"So, you're the one who got our boss in trouble." He growled.
Mike knew right away what this was about. "Back off."
But his efforts to front tough were ruined as he stepped back into another guy, tyen more appeared, surrounding him.
"Yeah. He's the one." The man he'd backed into spoke up. "Can't mistake that fluffy head anywhere."
Mike cringed, knowing they were referring to his hair. Had they really picked him out that way.
Before he could truly think more on that, the bulky one grabbed him and pulled him close.
"Get off-" He cried, but was silenced by the fact they had weapons.
"Maybe we should teach you some respect, boy." The huge man snarled in his face.
Then, out of nowhere, the bulky man let Mike go, staggering back as his face was covered in a web.
"What the hell?!" The others cried.
Mike recovered from his stumble, heart soaring. "Spider-Man."
Sure enough, there was the hero himself, launching himself feet first at one of the guys with a pair of web-lines. The guy was struck with enough force to know him out, giving Mike enough time to register that one guy had been waiting for him and five had followed him.
"Funny." He heard Spider-Man quip. "I only saw five of you come into this alley but six when I got here. Do you guys pop out the ground or something."
The little joke didn't seem to amuse the thugs however.
Two of the four still standing charged right in, weapons at the ready but Spider-Man easily pulled off a back-flip dodge before grabbing both guys and knocking their heads together, he then webbed the third one to the wall as the fourth began to creep up behind him. Mike tried to shout a warning only for a large hand to cover his mouth. The bulky guy had got the web off his face and recovered, grabbing him and, as Spidey miraculously spun around and slid under the man behind him before knocking him out with an uppercut, Mike felt a gun pressed to his temple.
"Don't interfere any further, Spider-Man, or I'll blow his brains out." The man yelled.
Mike froze eyes wide, wondering how he could possibly get out of this.
He got his answer when Spider-Man shot two webs, one cover the gun, the other grabbing onto Mike's torso, he then pulled and the gun went flying, Mike staggered right out the man's grip and Spidey leapt right over him to land a knockout blow on the man, finishing the fight. Mike gasped for breath, amazed.
"Wow, that, you..."
Spider-Man turned to him and shrugged.
"All in a days work, you're safe now." He remarked. "You're not hurt or anything?"
Mike shook his head, unable to help but notice something seemed a little off with Spider-Man's voice, like he was trying to deliberately deepen it.
Spider-Man nodded. "Well that's good, the police will be on their way to pick these guys up. You best hurry to wherever your going if you're alright."
"Oh yeah, of course." Mike replied quickly.
He then hurried to leave, looking back to see Spider-Man swinging away, he was still in awe.
'I-I just got saved...by Spider-Man.'
His mind was still full with that one thought as he made his way to the Daily Bugle.
XXXXX
Sadly Mike's elation at being rescued by Spider-Man only lasted a few minutes after he entered the main offices of the paper. He had just enough time to spot a familiar face, a medium height older girl with medium length brown hair, brown eyes and fair skinned, dressed in a smart skirt-suit, before the door to the most important office opened and J. Jonah Jameson himself stepped out.
"Wheeler!" He barked, pointing at Mike. "My office, now."
Mike sighed and headed in, sparing a glance at his sister, the girl he had noted before. Once inside the office Jonah sat at his desk and picked up an empty folder, making a show of opening it, checking it, turning it upside down before throwing it back on his desk. He fixed his narrowed gaze on Mike who braced himself.
Mike grimaced as he stood in that dreaded office, before Jameson's desk, the cantankerous man glowering at him.
"Just what are you trying to pull on me here, Wheeler?" The gruff voice of the Daily Bugle Chief barked at him.
Mike swallowed nervously. "Sir, I..."
Jonah shook his head. "You've had two weeks to complete the assignment I gave you and you haven't produced the goods. What gives, too hard for you, or were too busy clowning around with your friends!?"
"No sir, I-"
But Jonah cut him off again. "I don't want excuses, Wheeler, don't forget that failure on your part doesn't just reflect badly on you, but on your sister as well. After all, she's the one who recommended you intern here as a freelancer."
Mike bit his lip at that, shifting anxiously.
He knew what Jameson said was true, it had been Nancy who got him the job here. Although truthfully he only sought out the job in the first place to get his father off his back.
"Just get this through your head, Wheeler." Jameson continued. "You screw up again, you're fired. Now get outta my office."
He then turned his gaze to Mike's right and asked.
"Yes, what do you want, Miss Wheeler?"
Mike turned to leave suppressing a groan at being dressed down like that in front of his sister. Nancy, for her part, was calm and unperturbed, being used to Jameson's outbursts. She wasn't too worried about Mike being fired, Jameson threatened to fire her four times a week and never followed through.
"Pictures and the news report for the Shocker Bank Robbery." She explained as set them on Jameson's desk.
At once Jameson changed his tune and called to Mike.
"Wheeler, come here, I Need you!" Mike returned to the desk, confused until Jonah continued. "Take a look at these pictures, what are we missing?"
Mike stared at the pictures, then Nancy, then back, both of them incredulous.
"Spider-Man." Jameson answered for them. "We know he was there, we know what he was really after and we know he and Shocker CAUSED COUNTLESS DOLLARS WORTH OF PROPERTY DAMAGE!"
They both jumped at the sudden outburst but Jonah then continued as if it never happened.
"So that's your new assignment, Michael." He explained. "You have two weeks, get me a shot of Spider-Man, preferably in the middle of one of his nefarious deeds. Now, both of you, out of my office."
They both left, still incredulous at what had just happened and Mike with a sinking feeling of dread.
End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
