Chapter 5

Mike, Will, Lucas, Max and Dustin all stood together amongst their classmates as they were led into the large public lab area of Oscorp, out on their school field trip and looking forward to what they'd be shown.

"Here we have the main lab where Oscorp works on their greatest innovations of the future." The tour guide announced. "Here for example, we have the prototype for Oscorp's latest project to improve accessibility for paraplegic children, once complete this automatic walking frame will be able to respond to the wearers thoughts, allowing for greater freedom of movement."

More than a few people listening were impressed. Those that were not were simply those who had little interest in the field trip or cared almost nothing for Science and were just trying to make the most of getting out of class.

"Wow, you...you really think they'll get that working?" Will queried casually.

Mike shrugged. "Who knows, if anyone can, it's Oscorp."

Dustin nodded. "I hope they do, that'd be pretty handy for some people."

Lucas and Max both nodded in agreement, but at that point they had to move on, following the tour guide to another area. All the same, while watching all this, Mike couldn't help but notice something else, or rather, someone. It was the click of the camera that alerted him in the first place.

Sure enough, there was his sister.

"Nancy?" He queried in surprise.

That got the attention of the others who turns to see her too, lowering her camera, she nodded at them with a small smile.

"Hi. School field trip?" She greeted them, before querying their presence.

The boys and Max nodded before Max asked. "What about you?"

Nancy shrugged and explained. "This is my assignment for today, Oscorp's newest inventions on display, Bugle's gonna be doing a piece on it and I was sent to get the photographs."

"Oh, I see, cool." Will replied for them, smiling.

The others seemed happy with this, although Mike couldn't help but not the strange look on Nancy's face and as they hurried to follow their group which was starting to leave for the next exhibit, he glanced back and stopped, eyes going wide. He had spotted Nancy looked around and then, suddenly, began to slip away through a door, a door clearly marked private.

'What the...Nancy, what are you doing?' He thought in shock.

He was worried about what would happen to her, he couldn't just leave this. Glancing around himself and glad to see that nobody was indeed looking, he slipped away too. He quickly got the door open, it wasn't even locked, so he quickly slipped into the corridor behind it and saw Nancy up ahead. He hurried to catch up with her.

"Nancy, what are you doing?" He hissed as he caught up.

Nancy flinched and turned around. "Mike, what the hell?"

He shook his head. "I should be asking that. What are you doing back here, this is-?"

"Mike, it's Oscorp, you know what they're like. They're hiding stuff, you know they do." Nancy explained. "All that out there, that's just their public face, what they want people to see. But there's more, we know there is, right?"

Mike sighed. "Nancy, I...I know, but still...this is crazy. What, you wanna expose them, who?"

Nancy shook her head. "I, not every paper is the Bugle, Mike. You should get outta here."

But Mike had made up his mind.

He shook his head.

"No. I'm not leaving you alone here." He said.

Nancy looked at him for a moment, then sighed. "Fine, fine."

With that she shook her head and Mike followed as they looked around. They reached a door marked with numerous caution symbols, again it was surprisingly unlocked, before Mike could protest Nancy walked inside, he followed her and they looked around. To his surprise the room was somewhat bland, there didn't seem to be anything inside it, except for one thing which Nancy drew his attention to.

"What the...what is that?"

He joined her and saw what she was talking about. Under a spotlight in the middle of the room was a moderately large tank in the middle of the room. Inside was some sort of unknown liquid, and within it a strange substance, a different kind of liquid, thicker and seemed to actually respond to Nancy when she touched the glass, a section of it spiking out and touching the opposite side of the glass.

"Hey, what are you doing here, get away from that?"

They both spun around to see a man in his twenties approaching them. He was was a tall thin well dressed red-haired young man with brown eyes behind black framed glasses and pale skin, it was Harry Osborn.

"Sorry, we...we just-" Nancy stammered.

Harry narrowed his eyes. "This place is off limits to the public, I'm going to need you to leave right away."

Both siblings shared a startled glance, but Harry then clarified.

"You keep quiet about this place, not a word and I won't say anything about you two trespassing, understand."

They nodded quickly and were able to leave safely and even though they were concerned by what they had seen, they knew they couldn't say anything as the rest of the day went normally.

It was some time after the field trip and Harry had been true as his word to Nancy and Max. Instead he was seated at a desk with several other people in the meeting room, the Oscorp board of directors and next to him was a tall man in his late fifties at least, with neatly styled red hair, brown eyes and fair skin, a broad shouldered build and clad in a dark green suit. It was the Mayor and true leader of Oscorp, Harry's father, Norman Osborn.

"You cannot be serious." Norman remarked, irritated.

"I am afraid the figures don't lie, Mr. Osborn." One of the board members remarked.

Another nodded. "You have to understand how things work, how people view things."

Norman scoffed. "You are seriously trying to tell me that I am to cut myself off from my own company, just because I am the Mayor, that's-"

"A conflict of interest sir." The third board member explained. "You have your duties as the Mayor, therefore any continued involvement of you with Oscorp would raise questions."

"Dad, please. We need to look at this objectively." Harry said gently.

Norman shook his head. "I cannot believe I am hearing this. After all I've done, I expected better, than this base ingratitude-"

"Dad, enough, we-" Harry tried to calm him down.

The board members were getting on edge but then froze. Norman forgot his anger and turned sharply. The reason being the same reason to why Harry stopped talking, for he had suddenly doubled over, grabbing the edge of the table, coughing.

"Harry!"

Norman hurried to his side while Harry tried to control himself, quickly covering his mouth with a handkerchief as he coughed more, leaving blood in the handkerchief.

Norman glared at the board members.

"This meeting is over gentlemen."

With that they stood up and left, with no argument.

"Harry, I'm sorry. I-I shouldn't have lost control, shouldn't have got you riled up like that." Norman said sadly. "Don't worry, I promise, I will find a way to fix this, I-"

"There is no cure dad." Harry said as he controlled himself at last.

With that he gathered up his papers and left. Norman shook his head.

'There is Harry, and I will find it, no matter the cost, I swear.'
