Chapter 38 – Teamwork
The helicopter touched down. Repair staff hurried to take the damaged dolls and Neural Clouds to the repair bay. Ursula stood with Kalina discussing training. The two women looked at the dolls. "You have five hours. Rest, eat, sleep: whatever. I'll be preparing the simulations." The dolls didn't need to be told twice.
The repaired and rested dolls all arrived in the simulation room. Desks had been set up with stacks of paper and disks on top. "Listen up, ladies: we only have one shot at this. New team assignments:" Ursula paused to pull up the slide of names, "Team One: SAR, MP5, Type 92, Skorpion, OTs-12." The dolls moved to sit together. "Team Two: M4A1, ST AR15, M4 SOPMOD II, SAA, USP Compact." More movement. "Team Three: Yulia, M1911, M9, PPk, Contender." Yulia moved to be closer to her new team. "I've put you in these teams to best draw out your innate abilities. The rest of you are dismissed." The dolls left the room in silence. Ursula waited until the movement settled.
"Alright, the plan." Ursula pulled up a map of the mountain. "Bryant is one crafty bastard." She started with a wistful sigh. "That blast tapped Sangvis in one location, and the storm has revealed an old helipad we can use as an insertion point. Because they are so focused on finding him, Sangvis has all but ignored it. Team One will land there and rush Intruder from her blindspot." SAR raised a hand.
"Ma'am, that didnt work the first time, how will it work now?"
"We'll get there. Team Two will advance on Intruder from the FOB to the south. Distract her to allow SAR team to surprise her."
"How?"
"Bryant had some explosives in the base," Yulia said, "he probably used them to bait Intruder. Just setting off any explosion should put her on the prowl."
"Good point, Yulia." Ursula nodded. "M4, I'll trust you to improvise." The doll looked a bit startled, but nodded. "Finally, Team three will head south and evac Bryant...if he's still alive." The team nodded slowly. "Worst case, you group up with Team Two and put pressure on the Ringleader."
Ursula looked at the dolls. "Dismissed. Read those reports, and hit the firing range. This is our last shot: make it count." The dolls saluted and began to sort themselves into a team. It hit her now that they looked human. Their faces showed a mix of emotions, and yet they all looked so peaceful...blissfully unware, permanently ignorant, of the fear and dread that would be in any man's heart. The same that was in Ursula's heart.
Perhaps that's what Ursula was like, all those years ago. Perhaps that's how Bryant was, too. Before the war. Before the loss. Ursula shook her head. "Too late now. Time to kill us a Ringleader."
