Just like it says in the title.
"Hey, Padmé? If I turned into a worm, would you still love me?
Padmé pauses but quickly continues to type on her datapad. "A worm?"
"Yeah. If someone turned me into a worm, would you love me?"
A moment passes in silence. Then, when Anakin is about to shut down the whole conversation, his chest aching at the obvious answer, Padmé stops and turns to him. "Ani, that's impossible. Even with the 'mysteries of the force'."
Anakin scoots a little closer to her on the couch. "I know that. But it's hypothetical."
She eyes him with suspicion. "If someone, hypothetically, turned you into a worm."
How does she not understand this? "What would you do?" He urges.
Padmé sets her datapad down, confusion still clear in her face. "I…I don't know. Do I know you're a worm?"
"Yeah, you know." She better not ask how, because he hasn't quite gotten that far. Again, this is supposed to be hypothetical. The details shouldn't matter this much.
"I don't know. It's just a worm, then."
Anakin frowns, his stomach sinking. "But it's still me! I can still think and feel the same, I'm just a worm!"
"Ani," She shakes her head, seeming to grow tired of the conversation. She takes his hands, her eyes now gentle but serious. "This sounds like you're trying to ask something else but don't know how."
Backtrack! Abort mission!
"Uh…" Anakin tries to laugh it off, then he shakes his head just as seriously. "It's just a…a hypothetical."
Padmé's eyes watch him for a moment, then move to the ground. "I see." She says it with a certain tone he always dreads. They'll be talking about this later, when he's ready to be honest with her.
But until then, she will play along. "Alright. Then let's reverse the roles. What if I turned into a worm, mind still intact?"
This, Anakin is ready for.
"Easy. I'd first make you a little place to stay, filled with Naboo's plants and soil -assuming you're a Nubian worm. Then, I'd research worm diets and care. And after I've got you settled, I would set you in front of the balcony, so you can watch the sun rise and fall every day."
He's about to add that he'd let her out every so often to sleep in their bed -if it's safe- but Padmé's sad expression makes him pause.
"I think I know what you're really trying to say." She reaches out again, holding his face like he's precious. It makes his heart flutter. "You want me to love you no matter what, right? Even if you get turned into a worm, I'll love you."
After some hesitation, Anakin nods sheepishly.
"Oh, Ani. I'd love you even if you were turned into a rancor ."
He almost doesn't believe it. Rancors are ugly ! "Really?!"
"Yes, really. Now let me work, please." Her hands retreat and Padmé's focus returns to her datapad. But it doesn't feel so much like she's ignoring him anymore. Now, Anakin is content to lean against her and just exist.
She'd love him as a worm.
