Ch 2 Yearning hearts
The air crackled with electric energy, the scent of wet earth and something ominous lingering on the breeze. Sakura's senses heightened, detecting a metallic tang mixing with the nauseating odor of rotting flesh. Trudging through the muddy terrain, she caught a faint sound of Kakashi struggling to hold back his disgust.
Glancing over her shoulder, Sakura's eyes narrowed as she realized the demons were dangerously close. Her hand instinctively went to her mask, a shield to protect her true identity from Kakashi. But now, she felt an overwhelming need to shield him too. Clenching her fists, a fierce determination settled on her face. Coming to a sudden stop, Sakura pivoted, ready to face the impending wave of enemies.
Kakashi skidded to a stop beside Sakura, his eyes widening in surprise at the sight of her mask. However, there was no spark of recognition in his gaze. They didn't exchange words, knowing that none were necessary in that moment. Sakura turned her attention to the approaching demons, their eerie cries reverberating through the stormy night, sending chills down her spine.
"They lack intelligence," Sakura murmured, assuming a poised fighting stance. "Just strike, slash, and repeat until they're all defeated." With a swift motion, she retrieved a kunai from her pouch, noticing Kakashi mirroring her actions. The demons charged forward, their malevolence emanating from their glowing eyes and jagged claws. Sakura unleashed a series of energetic strikes, her movements graceful yet deadly.
Without hesitation, Kakashi joined the battle, his movements agile and precise as he maneuvered through the horde, striking with deadly accuracy. The air crackled with the power of his lightning jutsu, while kunai soared through the air, swiftly dispatching the demons one by one.
The demons relentlessly pressed forward, their numbers seemingly endless. Sakura and Kakashi fought valiantly, their movements becoming a blur as they struck down demon after demon. Yet, the horde seemed to replenish itself, their ranks unyielding.
Sweat dripped down their faces as fatigue set in, but their resolve remained unbroken. They fought with every ounce of strength they had, refusing to surrender.
As the rain finally ceased, the sky gradually lightened with the approaching dawn. Sakura and Kakashi found themselves standing back to back, encircled by a relentless horde of demons. Their bodies ached, each breath coming with labour.
Summoning their last reserves of strength, Sakura and Kakashi unleashed a formidable combination attack. Sakura tapped into her yokai powers, channelling an otherworldly force that infused her strikes with an immense power. Meanwhile, Kakashi's Chidori crackled with lightning, its electric energy pulsing through the air.
The ground trembled as their joint assault tore through the demon horde, obliterating them in a blinding eruption of energy. The remaining demons staggered back, their once-bold demeanour shattered, as Sakura and Kakashi stood resolute amidst the dissipating smoke.
Breathing heavily, Sakura turned to meet Kakashi's gaze, her eyes a mix of exhaustion and affection. In that intense moment, a flicker of recognition danced in Kakashi's eye, realization slowly dawning upon him. He stared at Sakura, taking in her features. Sakura's trembling hand instinctively rose to her face, only to realize that her mask was lost amidst the chaotic battle. A surge of vulnerability and uncertainty washed over her, causing her heart to skip a beat. Caught off guard, she instinctively took a small step back, creating a delicate distance between herself and Kakashi.
In contrast, Kakashi stepped forward, his gaze unwavering and fixed upon her unmasked face, brimming with unyielding intensity. His hand extended, bridging the space between them. Sakura could sense a whirlwind of emotions swirling in Kakashi's eyes, reflecting the tumultuous feelings stirring within her own heart. A shiver ran through her body, uncertain if it was a result of the shock of the moment or the anticipation of his response. But before any words could escape his lips, a thunderous crash shattered the fragile tranquillity, violently shaking the ground beneath them.
"Lady Sakura!" Startled out of her shock, Sakura quickly spun around to witness a woman dashing towards them. A trail of ice followed in her wake, freezing the encroaching demons in their tracks. "Come!" The woman's fingers, touched by frost, closed firmly around Sakura's upper arm, forcefully dragging her away before she could react.
"Wait!" Sakura's desperate struggle to break free intensified, her heart pounding with a mix of fear and determination. She couldn't bear the thought of leaving Kakashi behind, his hand still suspended in the air, frozen in a moment of interrupted connection. Panic surged through her veins as she strained to wrest her arm from the woman's icy grip, but it remained unyielding. In one swift, forceful motion, she was abruptly propelled into the waiting Oboroguruma.
Landing roughly on her stomach, Sakura's instincts kicked in, propelling her into a swift roll driven by a surge of adrenaline. The woman quickly followed suit, climbing into the cart beside her, and without hesitation, the vehicle sprung into motion.
"No, wait!" Sakura's voice carried a desperate plea, her words echoing through the air as the cart ascended higher and higher. Fueled by unwavering resolve, she pushed open the side screen, allowing the rushing wind to tousle her hair, and propelled herself outward, leaping away from the safety of the cart.
Sakura blinked, finding herself staring at the wooden ceiling inside the cart. Slowly, she sat up, her mind spinning with a mix of astonishment and building anger. "You erected a barrier?" she questioned, her voice tinged with disbelief. Her eyes locked with the woman's, a defiant gaze met with unyielding determination.
A thunderous roar from below startled Sakura, jolting her into action. In an instant, she sprang to her feet, closing the mere distance of two steps to reach the screen. Pushing it aside, she saw Kakashi standing amidst a swarm of demons. Despite their menacing presence, Kakashi appeared oblivious to their threats, his gaze fixed upwards, directed at her.
"We have to bring him too," Sakura demanded, her voice unwavering. "He'll perish if we leave him behind."
"I have received explicit orders to retrieve you and you alone," the woman reiterated, her voice firm and resolute.
Panic surged through Sakura, spreading like wildfire through her core. "We can't abandon him there! They'll kill him!" Her plea rang out, desperate and filled with anguish. She commanded the cart to turn back, her voice laced with urgency, but her words fell on deaf ears. The cart ignored her desperate pleas, its path unyielding.
In a fit of desperation, Sakura pounded on the barrier with all her might, her knuckles stinging from the impact. However, the barrier held firm, unyielding to her frantic assault. Tears welled in her eyes as she realized her efforts were futile.
"I'm sorry, but we cannot deviate from our orders," the woman's voice carried a hint of regret, yet her resolve remained unwavering. "Our mission is to retrieve you and return."
Sakura's gaze remained fixed upon Kakashi, standing resolute amidst the encroaching horde of demons. Her heart twisted with helplessness as she watched them close in on him from all sides. In that moment, she could only bear witness to his plight, her own sense of powerlessness gnawing at her soul.
The group of demons dispersed, clearing a path for a towering figure, a colossal demon that loomed above the rest. Sakura's heart sank, a heavy weight settling in the pit of her stomach. Anguish consumed her as she watched the menacing creature lunge towards Kakashi, its massive swing aimed directly at him. Every fiber of her being yearned to rush to his aid, her muscles tensed and ready for action.
Kakashi crumbled under the brutal blow, collapsing to the ground. Sakura's hands clenched into tight fists, her nails digging into her palms, as a surge of self-loathing coursed through her veins. The overwhelming realization that she couldn't save him washed over her, tearing at her spirit. Hot tears welled up behind her eyes, threatening to spill over, and she despised her own helplessness.
As the first tear rolled down her cheek, the colossal demon approached Kakashi, stooping down to retrieve him as if he were a lifeless puppet. Sakura's heart clenched with a mixture of grief and anger, her emotions entangled in a tumultuous storm.
"Who ordered you to retrieve me?" Sakura whispered, her voice barely audible. In that moment, she realized how much she had missed Kakashi. Her inadvertent unveiling during the chaotic battle had allowed him to recognize her. She knew that this new-found revelation would bring trouble, but a part of her couldn't help but feel a profound sense of happiness that he now knew she was still here, still traversing the world.
However, despair clawed its way up from the depths of Sakura's being as the realization settled in. Kakashi was now trapped in the clutches of their enemies, and she blamed herself. She had failed to protect him, to ensure his safety in the face of danger. Remorse gnawed at her soul, leaving her heart heavy with regret.
Desperately clinging to a glimmer of hope, Sakura whispered to herself that if their intent had been to end Kakashi's life, they would have done so already, leaving behind his lifeless body. From what she had observed, Kakashi appeared unconscious when the demon had carried him away. Hopefully, he was still alive.
Closing her eyes, Sakura battled the surging anger within her, refusing to let it consume her completely. Taking a deep breath, she centred herself and then repeated her question with greater volume and determination. "Who ordered you to retrieve me?"
Icy blue eyes met Sakura's gaze defiantly, and the woman spoke a single name: "Mikuzume."
A hushed silence fell over Sakura as her pale face drained of colour, the weight of those words sinking in. "I hope, for your sake, he isn't dead," she uttered softly, her voice filled with a chilling resolve.
As Sakura settled into the middle section of the cart, she took a moment to collect her thoughts. The rhythmic sound of the wheels against the terrain provided a strangely comforting backdrop to her troubled mind. She couldn't shake off the weight of uncertainty that plagued her, the nagging doubts about Mikuzume's intentions and Kakashi's fate.
Gazing out into the distance, Sakura watched as the landscape whizzed past, a blur of vibrant colors and fleeting glimpses of nature. The wind tousled her hair, offering a small respite from the heaviness in her heart. She knew she had to remain focused, to keep her emotions in check despite the turmoil swirling within her.
Closing her eyes, Sakura let her mind wander, seeking clarity amidst the chaos. She summoned memories of her training, the countless battles she had fought alongside Kakashi and the team. His unwavering resolve, his selflessness in protecting others—it was a part of who he was, etched into her very being. The thought of losing him filled her with a sense of urgency and determination.
Opening her eyes, Sakura steeled herself. She knew she couldn't afford to dwell on uncertainty or fear. She had to trust in her own strength and abilities, and in the bond she shared with Kakashi. If there was a way to save him, she would find it. With renewed resolve, she leaned against the side of the cart, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
The journey continued, the cart hurtling forward towards the unknown. Sakura's mind raced with plans and possibilities, her heart fueled by the unyielding hope of reuniting with Kakashi once more. She would not allow despair to consume her. She would fight, she would endure, and she would find a way to bring him back.
