The calming sounds of the waves did not want Stiles to open his eyes. It was relaxing, meditative, and wonderful. He turned his head, felt the prickly sensations of gravel touch his face as the feeling of tiny pounding kept touching his chest. He looked up to see the blinding rays of the sun before he covered his hand to shadow the light and admired the bluest sky free from clouds up above. He wanted to close his eyes again before he looked down to see Harry the pug tapping his stomach, shifting its head sideways, and stared at him.
"You up yet, doofus?"
Stiles shrugged and laid in the sand that he realized he was in exhaled. "Damn. I'm having some weird dream right now where I'm on a beach and there's a talking dog…" He said to himself
Harry the pug hit him again with his tiny paw. "You're not dreaming, dumbass! Wake-up!"
Suddenly, Stiles lifted himself into a sitting position as he frantically wiped away the sand from his face and clothing. "Holy shit! I'm not dreaming!" He looked down to see Harry touching his pant leg.
"About time!" Harry frowned. "I thought you were dead and I was going to be abandoned in this universe!"
Stiles gasped. "You talk?"
Harry nodded. "What? Can't all animals? Sheesh, you act like we dogs have nothing to say. That is so speciest! Just because we bark and drink water from the toilet doesn't mean we're uncivilized!"
Shooting himself to his feet, Stiles wiped off the last of the sand from his clothes and stared in surprise at Harry.
"All right, Stiles," the FBI agent reassured himself. "You're in a different world and animals can talk here. What's the plan?"
"How about dealing with the weird alien monster behind you?" Harry gestured to the human before running and hiding behind a sand mound nearby.
Stiles turned around to see a humanoid being in a mustard yellow science suit and helmet holding a large canister with a nozzle.
"Fuck!" Stiles shouted. "An alien invader!" He got in a fighting stance. "Well, you're not going to abduct me and give me an anal probe!" He leaped into the air and performed a martial arts kick. "Hiiii-yaaaah!"
Landing a dirty move to the being's crotch area, the alien-suited humanoid dropped the canister and toppled over as it grabbed its junk in pain. Still not finished, Stiles was determined to end his opponent. Balling his hand into a fist, he attempted a strike to the helmet with a punch but the enemy grabbed his wrist and pulled him up forcing him to dangle a few feet off the ground. A growl came from the helmet wearing threat as it tore off its covering and to reveal a chiseled handsome face, piercing green eyes, and dark hair and short beard with flecks of gray hairs.
"Knock it off, asshole!" Derek sneered. "You kicked me in the balls!"
"Derek?" Stiles stopped struggling. The Alpha Hale dropped him into sand. "Ouch! Gee, warn a guy before you make him eat the gravel!" He looked up at him, absorbed his striking features which got even hotter as he was now older, and felt a momentary relapse of his judgment as Stiles felt his whole body swoon like a teenage schoolgirl with a crush. His mouth remained completely open.
"You know, you stare like that," Derek cocked his brows. "You'll go blind!"
"Sorry," Stiles apologized and got up off the sand. He again wiped himself off. "In my defense, you scared me. I thought you were some extraterrestrial attacker."
"Aliens don't exist, Stiles," Derek shrugged. "As far as I know," he corrected.
"They do on other worlds," interrupted Harry the pug. Stiles shrugged. He still had to get used to his pooch communicating like ordinary humans. "We just escaped from that universe but they were enemy bugs. I would love to have a can of bug spray with me if ever we go back there!"
Derek smiled at the pooch. "And you are?"
"Harry," answered the pug. "I'm this human's pet and reluctant doggy protector. Though, he can use a little protection, himself."
"Hey!" Stiles snapped. "I'm a trained FBI agent! I can handle myself."
Harry snickered. "Like the way, this Alpha here, got your ass handed to you! Don't flatter yourself!"
The remark made Derek laugh. It surprised Stiles because he's never seen a moody Derek laugh even in his own universe.
"Derek!"
Stiles turned his head behind him to see a recognizable teenager carrying a one year old boy in a onesie down the sandy hill to the beach. The moment he noticed Stiles, he began sprinting with the infant in tow.
"Stiles!"
Eli awkwardly hugged the FBI agent as he held the other babbling baby in his other arm. "You found me!"
Stiles released him as he looked at the teenager then to the baby in his arms. "Eli! I'm so glad you're safe!" He stared at the infant who looked strangely familiar. "Where did you get that baby?"
"He's mine." Derek replied sternly. He took the infant from Eli's arms. "This is my son, Eli. He just turned one." Little Eli began to babble forming a few nonsensical words as the Alpha placed a peck on his cheek. "We'll refer to him as Junior, now that we have two different Eli's that are present in this universe."
Teenage Eli examined the getup Derek was wearing. "Seriously, a hazmat suit? What were you thinking?"
"Call me an overprotective father," said Derek as he curled his mouth. "I have a one year old who is susceptible to otherworldly diseases. I wasn't going to expose him to a Stiles that might carry viruses from another universe."
"Like I told you," Eli defended his friend. "None of us caught any virus, so chill!" His eyes then glared at the container and nozzle at his feet. "Sanitizer, Derek? You were going to hose him down with a cleaning solution?" His tongue clucked.
"It's non-toxic!" Derek argued. "Besides, he looks like he has issues with his personal hygiene. Just look at him!" He pointed at his stained and disheveled clothes.
Stiles placed his hands to his hips. "I'm standing right here!" He scowled. "Plus, when you're being chased by ice zombies, fetish spies, and bug aliens, the last thing you're thinking about is a bath!"
Derek shrugged. "What can I say? I'm a germaphobe!" He picked up the canister, while holding Eli Junior. "Look, why don't we go inside. My cottage is up the hill. You can shower and change and I got freshly baked cookies in the oven."
"Do you have doggy treats?" Harry asked the Alpha.
"I'm sure I can scrounge something up," Derek offered.
"Lead the way then," Harry ordered.
The group walked up the hill and toward the Hale cottage.
Lighthouse Cove Precinct
Claudia Stilinski examined Noah Stiliinski and compared her personal notes. "It's uncanny." She remarked. "You are exactly like my Noah."
The sheriff glared at her. "I would say the same with my late wife. How did yours die?"
"Car accident," she answered bluntly. "Yours?"
"Frontotemporal Dementia," Noah replied directly. "Since we got the formalities of the way, how about explaining how much you know about us."
Sergeant Braeden stood next to Claudia. "Director Stilinski leads the ASA, the Alliance of Supernatural Affairs. She got word of your coming into our world."
"The ASA?" Tierney gasped. "This is serious!"
"Of course, it is, Mrs. Sprayberry," Director Claudia addressed her. "I apologize for the ordeal you went through today, but as stated there are procedures and laws that need to be abided in order to have our society function normally."
"Like making her the sacrificial lamb to a hostage situation," Allison scowled. "Some law." The sarcasm in her voice dripped with disdain.
Sargeant Braeden remains emotionless. "I assure you, Miss Argent. My police force had everything under control before your pack interfered."
"But I could've been killed!" Tierney protested. "The robber had the gun pressed to my head!"
"Again," Braeden defended. "My force had everything under control."
Director Claudia interrupted the argument. "Let's not dwell on the logistics. The fact is our department detected your team entering our universe which places our world into a possible otherworldly threat. My job is to evaluate if you are a threat or not, so I'm going to ask what you are doing here and your intentions in our reality."
Melissa decided to become the voice of reason. "Let me speak for everyone. Director Claudia, do you have a child in this universe?"
"I did," answered Claudia with hesitation. "An adult son. His name was Mieczyslaw but we called him…"
"Stiles for short," Noah said in unison with the Director. The pair looked at each other in curiosity.
"We both gave our son a nickname because…" the sheriff continued.
"Because he couldn't pronounce his birth name," finished Claudia. She returned to her steely composure. "Why do you ask?"
"I have a Stiles that came into this world with us," said Noah. "However, he's gone missing and if we don't find him and the people we're looking for, your universe and ours are going to be fucked."
Director Claudia folded her fingers. "Finally, some truth. Are talking kaiju level trouble or the end of the world kind?"
"The kind that gives an evil shifter the power of a god," answered Chris directly. "And who knows what will happen."
Braeden looked to Director Claudia who rubbed her chin to think. "Then we have a stalemate then. Here's the deal." She offered the bargain. "My duties with the ASA are to ensure that the public doesn't get word of a potential threat. From what I've seen, you are all warriors of some kind and were prepared to take down this evil shapeshifter by traveling portals and dimensions. Hence, you're an ally. Help me take down this thing and I'll help you find your Stiles and any other companions you're looking for. Agreed?"
"Agreed!" The pack said in unison.
"Me too!" Tierney offered.
"Mrs. Sprayberry," Braeden addressed her. "I don't think civilians should get involved with this…"
Tierney folded her arms and pouted. "I'm going and helping! That's final!" Nothing was going to convince her otherwise.
"She comes too!" Noah argued. "She's an ally!"
"Fine!" Claudia rolled her eyes. "But putting a civilian in harm's way is on your head!"
"I could live with that!" Tierney giggled as she stuck out her tongue at the ASA Director.
Claudia ignored the immature girl and returned her attention to the group. "Why don't we begin by telling who else you traveled with besides your Stiles."
Melissa gave her the details. "There's us, Stiles, Harry the pug, our kitsune, Kuza, who has gone missing and, of course, Eli…"
"Eli Hale?" Claudia asked Scott's mother.
Melissa nodded. "Yeah, he's this fifteen year old teenager…"
The Director raised her hand to stop her. "I know where we might find Stiles and maybe this teenage Eli."
Curiosity took a hold of Scott. "Where? How would we find them in your world?"
"I have one better," said Claudia. "I'll show you." She turned to Braeden. "Sargeant, do you have a police van available?"
Braeden nodded. "Yes, mam. They just cleaned and washed one this morning."
"Good," said Claudia. "We're driving to the location."
"Where?" asked Chris.
"Derek Hale's beach cottage."
Hale Cottage
A hot shower and some clean clothes proved to work wonders. After dressing us in a hoodie and fresh pair of jeans, Stiles remarked how perfectly sized Derek's clothes that he loaned him fitted on him. Padding barefoot from the bathroom, the FBI agent made his way to the living room to see picture frames of the Hale family members on display from Derek's mom, Talia,at the head of a family picture with her children to seeing an older Cora waving from a vacation photo in Paris. But it was the snapshot of Peter and Malia embracing as father and daughter that really surprised him. Yes, this certainly is a different universe. HIs eyes looked around again until he got to the fireplace mantle that really caught his attention.
On the mantle were several photographs of him, well the Stiles of this world, and Derek hugging, kissing and embracing in a very loving manner. It was the last picture that really made his mouth drop.
It was a wedding picture of Derek and his husband.
Stiles.
His eyes sadly lowered. Derek married a version of me.
"Cookies are ready!"
A voice came from the kitchen. Stiles pulled himself together and walked over and smelled the sweet aroma of chocolate chips, snickerdoodles, and oatmeal raisin filling his nostrils. He saw the cookies placed on the stove on a large baking tray as Eli began piling his napkin high with the treats.
"Eli!" Derek scolded him. "Save some for everyone else." He turned his attention to Eli Junior who sat in his high chair munching on some string cheese, strawberries, and grapes. Gleefully, the baby said a few sounds and continued to munch on his lunch. "Junior here is now eating solid foods so I'm giving him a little variety." The Alpha's green eyes observed the clothes Stiles had borrowed and smiled. "You look good."
"Thanks," Stiles grinned back. He put his hands behind his head. "Sooo, are you close with your family?"
"Very," answered Derek as he fed Eli Junior another piece of fruit which he greedily ate. "My mom's always busy running an empire and my siblings are running the subsidiary companies around Europe and Asia but they send their well wishes. Despite my Uncle Peter being the playboy of the family, he always finds time to visit as well as my cousin, Malia. Why do you ask? Is the Derek in your universe not as close?"
"It's complicated," Stiles admitted.
Derek paused and sighed. "Eli told me about his family history. I'm sorry for what happened to his father. He was a brave man."
"He was," Stiles nodded. "Out of curiosity, how did you know about multiverses and alternative worlds?"
The Alpha smiled again. "My reality is filled with magic and the supernatural. We have shapeshifters and creatures from mythical stories. The possibility of alternative dimensions and portals isn't far fetched but some conspiracy theorists and denyers would argue so. Even after the kaiju tragedy of New York City decades ago, the public still denies it ever happened but I guess there are loons in every world that would disregard facts rather than their own ideologies."
"Then you encountered Eli," Stiles added. "And that cemented the possibility of these theories?"
Derek nodded. "Somehow he was teleported to my property unconscious. This beach house is private and I'm an Alpha so I can sense intruders. I brought him inside and was about to call the cops when he told me everything. I'll admit, having your teenage son, from another universe isn't exactly believable but he knew things about me and my family that only a true Hale would know so I accepted it."
"I mean it wasn't easy," teenage Eli jumped in with a mouthful of cookies. "But I remembered the stories my dad used to tell me about my grandmother, aunts and cousins and it seemed to click. I've been staying here ever since, praying you guys would find me and then you showed up just now."
Stiles interjected. "I still don't know where Scott and the others are or even if they got sent to the correct world. I just woke up on the beach and trying to make sense of it all as I get my bearings."
"Don't think too long," said Harry the pug as he gorged on a bowl of kibble. "We still have a mission to finish!"
"Thanks, Harry," Stiles groaned. "Like that ever left my mind."
"You're welcome," replied Harry as continued to munch on his food. "At least, I'm the sane one in this posse."
"I'm sure, your friends and family will turn up," said Derek as he fed Eli junior some string cheese. "Portal hopping isn't always so predictable. They'll find their way into my universe sooner or later. In the meantime, you can stay here. There's plenty of room."
"I'm sure," the FBI agent said without thinking. "Where's me, I mean here's your husband?"
Those words cut deep. Eli nearly choked as Harry looked up as well, just as curious about the question.
Derek paused as let his son enjoy his meal. Teen Eli sensed the tension, grabbed a few more cookies and began to pick up Harry.
"Hey, I'm not finished!" Harry protested.
"This is our cue to leave." Eli told the dog. "If you need us, I'll be in the guest room." He was out of the kitchen, holding Harry like a football as the awkward tension began to build between Stiles and Derek. Now that the pair was alone, the Alpha finally looked at Stiles with sadness.
"You saw the wedding photos, didn't you?" He asked him.
Stiles nodded. "I guess that's why these clothes fit perfectly. They're his, aren't they?"
Sadly, Derek nodded.
"What happened to me…I mean him?"
"My Stiles had an unknown tumor in his kidneys," the Alpha explained. "By the time we got the diagnosis it had spread into renal cell carcinoma at stage 4. I lost him six months ago."
Stiles pulled up a chair and sat. "I'm sorry. I can't imagine going through that." He placed his hand over the Alpha's as Eli Junior started to babble da da da.
Derek stood up. "I'm not going to lie. I'm still grieving and seeing you here…it still hurts. There's too many memories, but I have to move on. I have to be strong for my son." Tears filled his eyes as he touched Eli Junior's hands. Stiles placed a hand on his shoulder. "I know you're not him," said Derek. "But, it doesn't mean seeing you doesn't remind me of him…how much I miss him…"
"Hey," Stiles started to speak. He tried to ease his sadness. "It's okay to grieve. It was too soon for you to process and heal…" Before he knew it, Derek had turned around and pressed his lips onto his. The kiss felt different, not like the Derek from his universe but longing, sensual, passionate, and familiar. Part of him wanted to fight it, but Stiles's own urges and his own emotions were strong so he submitted. He didn't want it to end.
Realizing his mistake, Derek pulled away.
"I'm sorry," he said, expressing his deepest regret. "I shouldn't…I was…" He stopped, picked up Eli Junior who stopped eating, and began to march away from the kitchen. His back faced Stiles who looked at him confused and with mixed feelings. "I've got to clean up and change Junior. You can take the other spare guest room since Eli is in the other one. Tomorrow we can try to find your friends and family.." Those were the Alpha's final words as he disappeared down the hallway into his bedroom.
Stiles's fingers touched his lips from where Derek kissed him. It left him speechless. More importantly, he wasn't hungry for cookies.
The drive to the Hale cottage was awkward to say the least. At the wheel was Sergeant Braeden while Director Claudia sat in the front passenger seat. No one said a word along the drive until Claudia decided to break the monotony.
"You're probably curious about our world," she said to the group. "I'm sure you have questions."
"I know I do," Chris volunteered first. "How is it that humans and shapeshifters can coexist in your world?"
"It wasn't easy," Claudia informed him. "There have been many wars throughout history. To understand our universe you have to go back to biblical times."
"Like BC and AD?" Noah jumped in. "That far back?"
Claudia nodded. "I'm sure your world has Christianity as they do in ours. As in the stories, history refers to the time of Jesus before Christ and after death. Add a third, RC, which stands for the resurrection of Christ."
"I don't understand," Melissa pointed out. "We know our religious studies of the resurrection of Jesus."
"But did you know that a few of his Apostles were shapeshifters?" Claudia asked the group.
"According to whatever history or religion you believe," Braeden interjected. "Magic, the supernatural, shapeshifters, demons have all existed the same time humans were born on this planet. However, they were kept secret and Christianity became the prominent religion that resulted in many conflicts and wars which formed our civilization."
"Then RC happened," Caudia added. "And they were there during his rising and the knowledge of the existence of the supernatural world became part of our society. Since then, the supernatural community have allied themselves with clans, tribes, kings, countries, and clergy and shared their world of magic and the unknown which became useful in the many wars fought, nations to be colonized, and the establishment of new civilizations to be built. Thus, this is the world that was created."
"I'm not going to say our universe is perfect," said Braeden. "We still have international conflicts and wars but with the supernatural community out in the open, it has become as normal as seeing the possibility of UFO's appearing or, in your case, time travel or portal jumping."
"For record," Allison jumped. "Aliens are real. We just came from a world where we encountered some and not all are friendly."
"I figured," smirked Claudia. "We have yet to make contact in this one." She returned back to the original topic. "To oversee and protect the human and supernatural population, agencies like the ASA were created to ensure and oversee the world and to stop potential threats. The kaiju New York tragedy is one example and we have powerful seers in our employ that sense if something or someone from another dimension came here."
Scott got in the conversation. "And that's how you knew we weren't from your universe and weren't shocked when we appeared."
Braeden nodded. "I ran a background check when we arrested you and Allison. No existence of any Argent or McCall that fit your profile so I knew this meant something otherworldly so I made the call to the ASA. Claudia is a friend and took over the case."
"That's why you didn't book us at the station," the sheriff concluded. "You needed information about our motives here."
"Exactly," Claudia agreed. "After you told me that there is a potential threat, I knew this had to be kept secret. Public knowledge would cause a worldwide panic and we don't want that. The !nations put their faith in the ASA and their respective governments. It's better that we stop it ourselves before involving anyone else. Cut it off at the head before it can regrow, I always say."
"Is that hydra thing?" Allison asked the director. "It sounds like a hydra thing."
"Don't be silly," said Claudia. "Hydras went extinct like the dinosaurs. Though some conspiracy theorists believe otherwise."
"Like Bigfoot," Tierney jumped in. "People didn't believe they existed until a species finally made their way from the Ozarks and blended into society. I mean I dated one but all the hair was a bitch to clean in the sheets."
Allison's tongue clucked. "Isn't there a supernatural creature you haven't dated?"
Tierney giggled. "I'm like a lollipop. I'm willing to lick all the rainbows!" She clapped her hands before pouting. "The only regret is my asshole ex-husband. I'm only a Mrs. because that lying, cheating douchebag won't agree to divorce!"
"He's that bad, huh?" Melissa asked the alkonost.
"Controlling and can't keep his pants zipped!" Tierney frowned. "He kicked me out of the house to live with his stripper sidepiece. I'm just glad I make enough money to split the rent with my roommates and friends of mine!"
"We're almost to the cottage," Braeden announced. She pulled the van up the secluded path and parked right in front. They got outside to see a luxury designed house that could be straight out of an architectural magazine.
"This is niiiiice!" Tierney commented. "Hide the money, y'all! There's poor people here!"
Melissa scoffed. "Tierney! Don't be rude!"
Noah agreed with Tierney. "The Hales have money. It wouldn't surprise me that this Derek Hale would have some too."
Tierney's mouth dropped. "Did you say Hale, like in Haleton Hotel chain, and the Hale empire? These people are crazy rich, old money types! They're not just multi-billionaires! They're gazillionaires!"
Director Claudia raised her hand. "Let me do the talking."
The front door opened as a moody Derek Hale came down from the porch in casual clothes and stared daggers at Claudia.
"What the fuck are you doing here, Claudia?" The Alpha sneered. "I told you to stay away!" He then looked at the group in front of his home. "Who the fuck are these guys?"
Scott approached first. "Derek, you don't know me but my name is…"
"Scott!" A voice shouted from inside. Teenager Eli came rushing outside, followed by Harry the pug. The pair embraced as he approached the group and gave them a welcoming hug as well. "I'm glad you were able to find me!"
"About time, you guys showed up!" Harry snapped. "I was getting worried!"
Everyone stared in shock at the pooch. Melissa turned to the group. "Did that dog talk?"
"Yes, I can talk!" Harry shouted. "What's your excuse!"
"Holy shit!" Chris remarked. "Animals communicate in this world!"
"Well most," corrected Claudia. "Unless they choose to. Again, we coexist with all living things."
"I don't care if you're giving a history lesson, Claudia!" Derek snapped. "You're not welcome here."
The director sighed. "Derek, please listen to me…"
Suddenly, the door opened and Stiles came out holding little Eli Junior in his arms. Claudia gasped and her eyes started to water. "Oh my God," she whispered upon seeing Stiles. He looked different, a few years older, but there was no mistaking how loving and kind his eyes were. She whispered his name again. "Stiles…"
Upon seeing the brown haired woman, he recognized her features from the photographs back home. Mom? He thought to himself. He always wanted to meet her again since his memories of her were forgettable but this person that stood before him was a complete stranger and Derek felt threatened by her. He knew she could not be trusted.
"Derek," Stiles touched his arm as he held a babbling Eli Junior. "This is my pack and my friends. I don't know this woman but I'm sensing some tension."
Derek sneered. "She's the reason why I almost lost custody of Eli Junior. My late husband was in hospice and she lawyered up to take Eli. No way in hell was I going to let that happen!"
"You were in no shape to raise a child!" Claudia defended. "You were too grief stricken!"
"Neither were you!" The Alpha spat. "But as usual, you abandoned Stiles like you always did during his childhood! He raised himself and he persevered without you; even when he got sick! I was there the entire time for him and for our son!"
"That's not true!" Claudia protested. "I was a single mom building my career and I financially supported him. He went to the best schools, was fed, given the best clothes and had the best nannies. He was well taken care of!"
"Except where it mattered most!" Derek accused her. "He needed parental love and you weren't present! I was therefor his adult years to understand what real love is and when we married, you tried to ruin our relationship! I don't forgive you and you are not allowed anywhere near our son!"
"I still have grandparents' rights, Derek," Claudia stated. "You're not the only one with powerful lawyers! I can get the courts to side with me as my grandson's appropriate guardian!"
"Not unless you can prove he's not biologically mine!" Derek shouted. "I'm ready to take any paternity test you throw at me! You'll have a hard time proving that Stiles and I aren't Eli's biological parents!"
That statement confused everyone, especially Stiles. "Hold up!" The FBI agent said. "How is it that Eli can have your late husband and you as biological parents? I thought you adopted or used a surrogate?"
"What are you talking about?" Derek glared at the Stiles. "Eli is biologically mine as is my late husband's!"
Claudia jumped in as she addressed the group. "To ensure both humankind and the supernatural population doesn't diminish or die out, we've come up with mystical means for couples of both genders or vice versa to have children. My late son, Stiles, had the ability to carry a child that is both biologically his and Derek's. Therefore, Eli carries both genetic traits of two fathers."
"Holy shit!" Eli exclaimed. "I have two dads?"
Even Stiles and the rest of the pack tried to absorb this interesting information. "Does that mean I have a craving for pickles and ice cream?"
