A/N: Happy Sunday/Monday everyone! So I got some messages of people saying they're waiting for Each Other's Savior to be published - from Each Other's hero. I think last week the website didn't properly index the story, so it might not have appeared. Updating every Sunday, so hopefully it does give anyone waiting a notification. If not, I'll see what I can do.
Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter or any works by J.K. Rowling.
Chapter 2
Pounding his fist at the seemingly invisible wall in front of him, Hadrian screamed in frustration.
It was clear that he was warded off of Potter Manor, unwelcomed to return.
Normally, he wouldn't give a care in the world about returning there.
But Tilly's body was still inside. Knowing the person that James was, the elf would go unburied and probably tossed away.
"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHh!"
After what felt like hours of slamming into the invisible barrier, Hadrian slumped down to the ground, lying flat on his back with a defeated look on his face.
He couldn't believe what had happened. In the blink of an eye, Tilly was dead, and he was casted out of his house.
All he wanted to do right now was curl up and cry. He wanted to mourn the loss of his closest friend. His only friend.
But he couldn't. Because right now, a serious problem was present. He was stranded.
So instead of mourning, he chose to take a few deep breaths. With that, Hadrian began to take stock of the situation.
The night sky was still very dark, meaning that it would be a long way before daytime. Hadrian checked his robes to find anything he might have on him.
He was pleasantly surprised when he was able to dig out a small pouch of coins. Hadrian emptied the contents of coins into his palm, counting them up.
"23 knuts…15 sickles…a galleon!" Hadrian exclaimed when the gold coin came out. It was surprising that he carried a galleon around. Normally he would keep most whatever money he got from his allowance in his room, but he must've accidentally grabbed one of his 3 galleons some time ago.
Putting back the coins in his robes, Hadrian inspected the wand in his hand. It was the same wand that his father gave him for the practice duels with Jamie. Ash, horned serpent horn, 11 inches.
It was strange that it had somehow ended up in his hands. All he remembered was grabbing it off the dining table. How did it even get there in the first place?
Not that it mattered. He was glad that it was there. Now all he needed to do was get away from here…
Looking at his wand, an idea suddenly came to mind.
Hadrian turned around to run out into the dirt path. He held tightly onto his wand and raised it.
A stream of light and the sounds of wheels moving echoed from the distance. In a blink of an eye, a bus suddenly appeared and stopped in front of him.
A man stepped out of the bus and announced himself to Hadrian.
"Welcome to the Knight Bus, emergency transport for the stranded witch or wizard. Just stick out your wand hand, step on board, and we can take you anywhere you want to go. My name is Stan Shunpike, and I'll be your conductor this evening!"
Hadrian greeted him with 2 sickles in hand for payment.
"Where to?" Stan asked.
The question put Hadrian at a pause.
Where to exactly?
Where could he go?
Not wanting to take too long and holding up the rest of the bus, Hadrian gave the first answer that came to his mind. The place where he would go whenever he needed comfort.
"St. Mungos." Hadrian answered.
***
Stepping off the bus, Hadrian was greeted by the huge hospital. The ride had only taken 10 minutes before they appeared at the location. Entering through the front, Hadrian was greeted by the receptionist.
"Hello, welcome to - Hadrian?" The receptionist exclaimed when she saw him.
The boy gave her a small smile. "Hey Ava."
"Same as last time?" Ava asked sympathetically.
"Yeah."
With a nod, the receptionist guided him down a hall and handed him a pass, signaling that he was cleared to enter.
Hadrian made his way through the hall until he reached a set of stairs, then proceeding towards the fourth floor to enter the ward.
A long row of patients laid down. All of them seem to have viscous scars on their body, or a dazed look on their face.
It was here where the long-term patients were housed.
And it was here where…
"Hello mother," Hadrian greeted softly.
Lily Evans Potter lay on a hospital bed with her eyes closed. Her face was serene, and she took slow and steady breaths.
It would look like she was sleeping, but the dim light shone enough to show her frail form, signaling that she wasn't well.
The bright red hair that she once had faded until it was a darker shade of its previous color. Much of the weight in her face and body seemed to have been lost, until it looked like she was a very small woman.
With a sigh, Hadrian plopped down on the chair next to her, as if he's done this a hundred times before.
Opening his mouth, he started to tell her everything that's happened.
Because he has done this a hundred times before.
Hadrian told her about his birthday. He told her about how Tilly remembered to bake a cake for him.
He also told her about being held hostage. He told her all about the fear he had when the aurors surrounded them.
He angrily spoke about James and how he ignored his pain. But he softened when he reminisced about Amelia Bones, the woman who at least cared.
It was then when he reached the part about what happened a couple hours before.
And the death of Tilly.
"And…he just killed her." Hadrian whispered.
"Why? Why did it have to be that man?" The boy croaked. "Why did you go so soon? I mean…I was one…I was one…"
He trailed off.
"I never even got a chance to speak with you…"
Hadrian sat there, quietly staring at his mother's face.
No response.
Just like last time.
And all the times before that.
"I hate you," The boy muttered halfheartedly. "I hate you for leaving me alone. I hate you for not answering. I hate you for not protecting me. I hate you…"
Hadrian paused. He wanted to cry. He wanted to scream at his mother. He wanted to wholeheartedly say and believe that he hated her.
But he didn't. Because he didn't hate her. How could you hate a mother who's unresponsive?
Besides, he couldn't hate anymore. The only hatred he had was directed at the man called James Potter.
Looking at the still serene face of his mother, Hadrian was at a loss of what to do. He wanted so badly to hurt James for hurting him. But he understood with the state he was in; the man would kill him.
"What do I do, mum?" Hadrian muttered. "What do I do?"
Again, no response.
***
It would be around midnight, based off the clock in the hospital ward, when Hadrian would finally leave.
Still unsure where to go from there, he understood that he had to take care of his physical needs first. He needed food and a place to stay.
Using the floo network at the hospital, Hadrian appeared in a mostly Leaky Cauldron except for a bartender still polishing mugs. When he saw Hadrian, he went to ask the boy if he was here for something, but Hadrian was already out the front door.
Seeing a quiet Diagon Alley was a strange sight. Shops hung up closed signs and the streets were empty. As he walked through the alley, Hadrian found himself in front of the only place still open - Gringotts bank.
The goblin nation did not rest because any minute not being open meant money not being made.
"I should have enough in my account to last for a few days," Hadrian said hopefully.
Pushing the wooden doors open, Hadrian was greeted with an active, albeit more subdued Gringotts. A few goblins glanced at him for the late hour of arrival, but none of them made contact with him.
The boy went to the closest teller who seemed to be filling out some paperwork on his desk. With a quick glance up, the goblin noticed the boy and grunted. "Deposit or withdrawal, wizard?"
"Withdrawal."
"Key please."
The request caused Hadrian to rub his forehead. In his stressed state of mind, Hadrian completely forgot that he didn't have his key on him at the time of being kicked out.
"Um, is there another way? I forgot my key." Hadrian asked nervously.
"A blood test will be done. It'll be 25 sickles."
Hadrian let out a small sigh of relief. At least he had a way to access his vault. Albeit his lack of key will cost him 25 sickles. He reached inside his robes to pull out his coin pouch and began counting.
"I'm going to need change. I only have 15 sickles, so is a galleon fine?"
The goblin looked at Hadrian as if he was an idiot.
"Right…I'm at a bank. Of course it's fine." Hadrian muttered to himself.
After handing over a galleon, Hadrian received 75 sickles back in change. As the goblin filled out a form of the transaction, he requested his name.
The boy answered with gritted teeth. "Hadrian Po…Potter."
A stone bowl slid over the counter. "Your hand over the bowl, please."
Once his hand was over the bowl, the goblin made a small cut across his palm. As the teller was checking the validity of the blood, Hadrian started to sweat when he noticed a frown.
"Is something the matter, goblin?"
"Hadrian Potter. Vault number 793, yes?" The teller asked.
"Yes."
"The vault has been frozen. All monetary assets are currently under review."
"W-what?' Hadrian sputtered. "How can it be frozen? It's my money!"
"Magic has recognized the relinquishment of the Potter title. It was recorded at 11:28 about 5 hours ago when the magical agreement was made. The vault now falls under review of the lord of House Potter, as it was opened under the Potter name."
"You can't do that!" Hadrian argued. "You can't just take my money like that!"
"Under Gringott laws that were agreed to at the time of opening, it's now the Lord Potter's money." The teller sneered. "I would suggest you present your case to him, wizard."
"Like hell he'll give me my money!"
The goblin only shrugged in response. "Then if there is nothing else I can do for you, wizard…"
"Can't you do anything?" Hadrian asked in frustration. "I'm a kid, aren't I? There's got to be some laws. Someone's got to be able to help me!"
"Unfortunately, the terms of the contract are absolute. Our bank has you filed now as an emancipated minor, considering your Ministry doesn't seem to have any laws in place should something like this happen." The goblin snorted as he mentioned the ministry.
Hadrian growled. He wanted to tear his hair out at the seemingly bad luck that he had. Everything tonight seemed to have gone wrong. If he didn't have any money, where was he even going to stay? Hadrian needed more time to think.
"Check for any other vaults. Maybe I have one I forgot about…" Hadrian said offhandedly as he tried desperately to think of something. He could perhaps try asking the goblins for a handout. But they don't really give out handouts, do they?
"I doubt there is - hmmm...there is one other vault it seems. Even though you are no longer a Potter, it wasn't opened under the Potter name."
Maybe he could sell something that he had on his body. But who would buy it from him? It's not like Gringotts would buy his robes or anything!
"Wizard?" The goblin teller pressed.
"Can you keep checking for vaults?"
Hadrian was too distracted to even hear what the goblin had said.
"There is a vault you have access to. I will not repeat myself again."
"..."
"...What?"
Hadrian gaped. "I made another vault?"
"It was not made under your name nor did you yourself make it, wizard. It is under the name Lily Evans and…let's see here…." The goblin gazed through a piece of parchment on his desk. "It's stated that the son of Lily Evans, currently or previously named Hadrian Potter will be allowed access."
His…mother? She made a vault? With him being able to access it? Wait, but shouldn't her marriage into House Potter have nullified his access?
Well, Hadrian wasn't going to look a gift horse in the mouth.
"Ah, could I um, access the vault?"
The goblin nodded and hopped off his station. "Follow me, wizard."
The boy was guided to the famous Goblin carts where they rode. About 5 minutes later, they reached a big metal lock with golden numbers, 'Vault 284.'
Hadrian watched as the goblin fiddled with a keyhole until he heard a noticeable 'click'.
"The vault is open, wizard. When you finish, I will lock the vault and we shall return to the main bank." The goblin stated.
Staring at the unlocked vault, Hadrian hesitated for a second.
Why did his mother have a separate vault for him? What was in there? How much was in there?
Hadrian shook himself out of his thoughts. If he sat there pondering, he'd never enter the vault and get anything. Steeling his nerves, Hadrian pushed open the vault doors.
He did not expect to find what he did inside the vault.
Actually, it was more of the lack of what he found.
Because inside the vault of his mother, was a single knut and a rolled-up piece of parchment.
Gaping a little bit, Hadrian hesitantly moved to the center of the room where the items were. He gingerly took the parchment in his hand and began to unroll it.
Instead of finding any words being written on the parchment, it was empty. At this point, Hadrian was absolutely baffled. His mother made a separate vault that only was left with an empty parchment and a knut?
"Hello Hadrian."
Said boy almost dropped the parchment and stumbled. "W-what? Is someone there?"
The voice was soft and feminine. In its greeting it sounded almost…caring? It echoed gently in his mind.
"The parchment you've opened is keyed to your DNA which will play this recorded message when specifically you have opened it. Speaking of DNA…wizards and their pride! If only they'd studied the sciences as well." The voice started muttering about the foolishness of wizards.
Hadrian gasped. That voice. Was that the voice…? "Mother? Is that…is that really you?"
The voice suddenly stopped, and Hadrian heard a deep breath. "Oh, look at me I'm rambling." The voice continued. "Anyways, if you haven't figured it out by now, it's your dear old mother. Lily Evans. Well should be Potter but I assume something's happened where that can no longer be the case."
So she must've known how James would turn out to be. Hadrian pondered deeply at the implication, but more questions arose about why she would even marry him in the first place.
"The war must've gone very poorly if you've had to hide your identity, my son. No matter. I'm sorry you must take the name Evans for now. I'd think you'd prefer to be more of the 'Heir of the most ancient and noble House Potter!'"
Hadrian had to stifle a giggle when he could imagine the quotation marks she was making. Deciding to make himself comfortable, Hadrian plopped himself down onto the ground and listened intently to the rest of the message.
Although his face began to fall slightly he realized the implication that she only assumed he couldn't take the Potter name was because of the war.
"Anyways, this vault was made as a fall back in case that something has happened to both me and your father. We made sure to create two. One for you, and one for your brother. The access of this vault is tightly sealed, and an extremely small group of people know of its existence."
The boy was still impatiently waiting for the part where it would be explained why there wasn't anything but a knut in the vault. Perhaps she left a spell that would hide its content? Maybe he needed to say a certain phrase.
"This vault should house around two thousand galleons worth of coins with magical resistant apparel, wands, and even some muggle money. Use them to their fullest, Hadrian. I would hope that it's for you to start another life, but I can't really force you to do anything if I'm gone now, can I?"
"I can only ask as any mother would…please live a happy life. I don't know how long I'm going to be able to spend with you before my death, but I want you to know that I love you very much."
The sound of rustling could be heard as Hadrian heard a subdued shout in the background.
"I have to go now, Hadrian. Oh! There's just one thing I forgot!" The somber tone his mother had been using changed to have a hint of excitement in them. "I've always wanted to name you Harry! Merlin, James calling the naming rights….ugh! It would've made it so much easier for Tilly too. She always had trouble calling you Hadrian. Ooh! That also reminds me. Give Tilly my love, would you?"
And with that, silence.
And silence.
Hadrian sat there on the ground. He had a very large grin, but it didn't do anything for the lone tear that fell from his eye.
A myriad of confused emotions overwhelmed him. On one hand, he was so happy to find out that his mother had cared this much for him. On the other, her being unaware of the true nature of James and the thought of Tilly still being alive sent a sharp pain through his chest.
Hadrian could sigh. He noticed he's been doing that a lot lately. The last two days have been one thing after another. Dusting his robes, Hadrian stood up to head back to the goblin. He had to find out where the contents were.
"Goblin?" Hadrian inquired once he met with the goblin standing outside his vault. "There are supposed to be around 2000 galleons in this vault among other possessions. However, I only found a knut and a parchment for me…"
The goblin frowned at the statement. "I can take a look at the statement of the vault. If that is something you wish, wizard?"
"Please."
The goblin walked over to what appeared to be an empty table right outside the vault. With a snap of his finger, a large book - probably ledger, appeared.
"Ah. There seems to have been some withdrawals," the goblin said, as he sifted through the book.
"What? Who made the withdrawals?" Hadrian demanded.
The goblin slowly turned up from the ledger to give him a sharp grin, before giving out the identity of the perpetrator.
Hadrian wondered why he was even surprised anymore.
"James Potter."
***
Stomping out of Gringotts, Hadrian plopped himself down at its steps. He felt defeated. When there was one shining spark of hope, it had all been crushed by the same man who put him in this position.
"Damn out!" He tore at his hair in frustration. "Damn it all!"
In a subconscious movement, his foot kicked a pebble out of the way. Watching as the pebble flew, Hadrian just sat there contemplating what his next move would be.
Deciding that nothing would get done if he just stood still, Hadrian pulled out his pouch and began looking through it.
His previous count of 1 galleon, 15 sickles, and 23 knuts has decreased to merely 90 sickles and 23 knuts.
"This would probably last me maybe 2 nights at the leaky cauldron." Hadrian mused. "Maybe I can just wait out until morning and see if anyone is-"
Before he could finish that sentence, a hand suddenly swiped the pouch of his hand. Looking up, the lithe figure that stole from him had already started running off.
"H-hey!" Hadrian shouted. He immediately got himself up and ran after the thief. "That's mine! Hey! Give it back! I need it!"
Weaving through Diagon Alley, he entered corners and small alleyways that he never had. The figure was incredibly fast, but he noticed that they had already started slowing down about a minute later. Whoever they were, they didn't seem to have much stamina.
He finally saw the figure stopping up ahead, as he cornered her in what seemed to be a dead end. Taking a clearer look at the figure holding her back against him, they were dressed in tattered gray robes with a hood covering their face. Standing barefoot on the ground, the figure began muttering.
"No…I didn't mean to…get behind me!"
The figure turned around to face Hadrian. It was there where he got a full look at his thief's face.
Pale sunken skin. Hair that seemed like it had seen better days slapped messily across her face. Its color stuck between being a bright blonde and a darker shade. It was clear that the girl in front of him was unable to take care of what could easily be the most beautiful hair he'd ever seen.
She looked to be about his age. But the way she stared at him…
Hadrian trailed his own eyes to her sapphire blue ones. Dark circles encompassed under them, showing signs of fatigue. However, the look behind them told a different story as Hadrian could only describe a ferocious desire to…protect?
"S-stay back!" the girl shouted, her hand immediately reaching inside her tattered robes. "I-I-I'll hex you!"
Hadrian stood there frozen. He was about to reach for his own wand but decided against it. He didn't know how fast he could be before she sent something at him. Looks like he had to negotiate.
"Look," Hadrian started hesitantly. "I need that. Alright? That's all I got right now."
The girl just snorted. "Sure." she said sarcastically. "Fancy robe you have on with you. I'm sure you'll really be in trouble without a few coins."
The boy's eye twitched slightly. Just because he was wearing some nice clothes didn't mean he wasn't dead broke at the moment! Merlin, he'd probably have to sell the robes later!
"Are you going to get a move on, or do I need to shoot a hex?" the girl asked harshly, interrupting his train of thoughts.
Hadrian growled. "Listen. I've had a really, really bad day today. I might as well be dead without that pouch. I assure you that I will actually be in trouble without those coins."
"Then…then…" The girl hesitated for a second before seeming to steel herself. "Then if that's how it is, I guess I'll have to hex you!"
Hearing that statement, Hadrian quickly ran through possible scenarios in his head. He's probably going to have to dodge. Then rush the girl, tackle her to the ground and get the pouch. Then maybe the figure that seemed to be hiding behind the girl would attack him and-
Wait a minute. The figure hiding behind?
His eyes finally noticed a small little figure in similarly tattered clothes hiding behind the blonde girl's back, peeking out.
He suddenly realized how long he's been standing there formulating a plan. Why hasn't she stunned him yet?
"You don't have a wand, do you?" Hadrian asked slowly.
A flash of panic appeared across the girl's face.
"I-no idea what you're talking about!" the girl denied. "Of course I have a wand! I'm giving you a chance to leave before I start shooting spells at you!"
This was going to be a gambit. But Hadrian had a strange feeling that the odds were in his favor.
"Okay then," Hadrian challenged. "Hex me. Pull out your wand and hex me."
…
…
The girl took her hand out of her robe to reveal…nothing.
"It doesn't change anything!" she snarled. "Come any closer and I'll hurt you! Wand or no wand!"
The girl balled up her fist and did her best to take a fighting stance.
"Just give me my money back then!" Hadrian growled.
"Well, I can't do that!"
The fierce look in the girl remained which told Hadrian that she wouldn't relinquish the pouch she had.
Drastic measures would have to be taken then.
Hadrian's own wand was in his hand. The girl's eyes widened in terror as she saw the wand appear.
"My pouch. Please." Hadrian said through gritted teeth.
The girl this time nodded numbly and tossed it at his outstretched hand, allowing him to catch it.
"I should call the aurors," Hadrian muttered. "I'd be well within my rights to turn you two in."
It would definitely be the lawful thing to do. But Hadrian knew that he didn't really have the heart to do it at this moment. Plus, he'd really feel like a prick if he did.
"Wait!" the girl cried. "Please don't turn us in! They'll separate us!" she gestured to the little girl behind her. "I'll do…"
The girl hesitated for a second.
Hadrian took a better look at the little girl next to her. She was a carbon copy of her older sister, albeit only in a younger body. The little girl seemed to plead with Hadrian, causing his heart to lurch.
If he had already been set on turning them in, he was sure that the look the little girl gave him would kill him with shame.
So instead, Hadrian decided to think long and hard on where to go from there.
Turning them is already off the table. Asking for money would be pointless. They probably need it more than he did.
But could he just ignore that the girl just robbed him?
Suddenly, an idea struck.
It's been a long night. Everything just crashed down on him and he didn't even understand how to process.
Blackmail wasn't something he'd be especially proud of, but the circumstances really felt like it was really weighing down on him.
He'd need someone. Just anyone.
Letting out a sigh, Hadrian finally gave his answer. "I'm not going to turn you in."
The girl in front of him let out a breath of relief. However, before she could say anything, Hadrian finished his sentence.
"Just do me a favor, and we'll call it even. I'll even buy you girls both a meal."
Hadrian noticed the girl stiffening up. She seemed almost hesitant, but the offer of a free meal probably outweighed it. Hadrian didn't understand why, but a look of fear crossed her face as she looked down at her body, and back at Hadrian.
Finally, after what felt like a minute, the girl gave her answer. "Okay…what's the favor?" she asked fearfully.
"…"
"…"
"Listen to my story."
"...Huh?"
Her mouth slowly dropped. Whatever she seemed to be expecting wasn't what Hadrian asked of her.
"Listen to my story," Hadrian repeated, almost annoyed.
"I'm sorry. But you have me at your mercy and you just …want me to listen to your story?" the girl asked incredulously.
"Well yeah. What else would I ask for?" Hadrian scratched his head. "It's not like I can ask for money."
The girl just stared at him for a full minute in disbelief. Slowly, a smile crept up upon her lips until she broke out in a fit of laughter. She sounded as if she was…relieved?
Hadrian's face reddened up in embarrassment, thinking that she was laughing at him. "Well? Are you going to?" he scowled.
The girl had to catch herself from laughing too hard. She wiped a tear from her eye before giving Hadrian the biggest grin he's ever seen on someone's face.
For some reason, it also brought out a small smile from him. Whatever it was…he decided that he liked seeing the girl in front of him grinning like that.
"Daphne," she said, offering her hand. "The little one next to me is Astoria - my little sister."
The gesture interrupted Hadrian's thoughts, causing him to look down at her bony outstretched hand. Hadrian held out his own to shake it, but paused before he made contact.
At that moment, he made his decision.
And he knew it was the right one the moment his hand grasped hers', and the words flying out of his mouth.
"My name is Harry. Harry Evans."
A/N: If you came from Each Other's Hero, you can definitely see the changes. The meeting with Daphne and Astoria has been kept closely the same (plot wise), probably because it was one of the most iconic part of the story. However, I did add some things that I wanted to improve upon long after the original was written.
With Lily, that was probably the thing I disliked the most how I handled on Each Other's Hero. Hopefully this plot will have a lot more depth.
To also clarify, I don't copy and paste ANYTHING from the other story. Everything is completely rewritten.
Thanks for reading everyone!
