Overview
Akiza and Ian's mentor and father figure. He is also one of the three surviving humans of the post-apocalyptic future that fell under JUNO's totalitarian rule. He is charismatic, heroic, kind-hearted, grounded, and imbued with a sense of justice to do the right thing. He leads the human resistance against JUNO with a sense of direction, maturity, and empathy. Under his cult of personality-like bravado and uncompromising determination lies a mysterious past. Having once lost his will to live when his world turned upside down, he sought to find a place to die, until having met an infant Ian finally had him found his resolve to survive in a cruel and lonely world.
What sets him apart from his two foster children, both of whom are Coordinators, is that Kiryu is actually a Carbon Human. Genetically modified humans created from data on individuals possessed by the mysterious organization known as Librarian Works. His genetic coding is tied to that of a certain ZAFT pilot who lost his family during the Battle of Orb. Unlike other Carbon Humans, Kiryu remained on Earth for 70 years, while everyone else have since migrated to Mars after Librarian Works' battle against Junk Guild.
Trivia
- His name is a direct homage to both Kalin Kessler (Kyosuke Kiryu in the Japanese version) and Yusei Fudo from Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's.
