Chapter 514 Inches to Spare

Jax's years in the MC had honed his reflexes and his ability to quickly problem solve. He found a gap and steered the van into the next lane despite another car also being in the lane. The driver moved over a few inches to give Jax some room. The truck missed them with inches to spare. Jax gave the alert driver a wave of thanks. She waved back before he eased the van behind her car.

"Whoo . . ." Scarlett breathed. "That was close. You were amazing."

"The other driver helped by moving over," Jax replied. "It was too damned close."

They heard helicopters overhead. Jax opened the sunroof so they could see what was going on just in time to see a police chopper followed by two news choppers fly overhead disappearing in the direction of the pickup.

"I love a good high speed chase," Scarlett said. "I just don't want to be in one."

"Let's get off the freeway because they are bound to close the freeway or there will be an accident and we'll be stuck."

"Good idea."

They weren't the only ones having the same idea, but Jax only had two lanes to get over to get to the off ramp. He got the van moved over and then let the car that helped him move in front of him. He repeated the same maneuver and both vehicles took the off-ramp. The female driver gave Jax a honk and a friendly wave as they turned in opposite directions at the bottom of the off-ramp.

"Texas plates," Scarlett said. "Figured the nice driver is from out of state."

By now the freeway had turned into a parking lot. It was at a dead stop. Scarlett using her cell phone's Wi-Fi found TV coverage of the police pursuit. The pickup crashed less than a mile from where he had nearly hit them. There were three suspected bank robbers in the pickup.

After crashing into a couple of cars who were in their way, the three men from the pickup jumped out, waved their guns around and then carjacked an SUV. One of the guys was bleeding. The reporter said that one of the bank robbers had coincidentally been wounded in the robbery.

They crashed into another two cars who didn't move out of their way quickly enough. The airbags deployed making the SUV undriveable. The guys began running around the freeway waving guns until they were told law enforcement was going to send in SWAT and use lethal force. The guys figured they would do about five years with a good attorney and that was better than being permanently dead..

"Well, it's all over now," Scarlett said.

"Except for the cops who have to still put the case together and the motorists who will probably be trapped on the freeway for a couple of hours," Jax said.

"Glad you got us off the freeway when you did," Scarlett said. "I'm going to text my dad and let him know that we aren't stuck in traffic and we're taking side streets to the lake house."

Scarlett sent a text to her father telling him about their high speed car chase adventure and letting him know Jax had saved them and they were not stuck in the freeway traffic nightmare.

A few minutes later, she received a reply text.

"I better read this to you," Scarlett said. "Glad Jax saved you two and you aren't on the freeway. Are you sure you don't want me to come and stay this weekend? We would all have a lot of fun together. I know how to get around the traffic so that's no problem."

Jax turned and looked at Scarlett as he waited for the traffic light to change.

"He's not serious, right? He's just screwing with us again."

"Yes. He's having some fun at our expense." Scarlett said without looking up from the text she was typing into her phone.

"I told him we would manage to find some way to have fun without him."

Jax chuckled.

"Good job, Scars."

They were only fifteen minutes from the lake house. With a little luck, they might actually get there in one piece barring another police pursuit or natural disaster.

Jax began moving the van over to get them off the freeway. The car in front of them had the same idea, so Jax and the driver worked together to get both cars
