AN: Special thanks goes to Story's Shadow for writing Vixen and Vulpine's part of the chapter.
-Secret Warriors' Base, The Next Day-
Vixen walked to a table where Vulpine sat, looking at Chinese takeout and held his chopsticks. He addressed her, but his visual focus was on the meat.
"Human's food is quite similar to our own. This 'Asian' food is quite good. Not the same ours, but still good."
"I've never had any of ours."
Vulpine sighed at this.
"Right...I'm sorry about that."
Vixen rubbed the back of her neck.
"It's ok."
They sat in silence for a few minutes. But Vixen started to shift uncomfortably.
"So...other than our food...what was our world like?"
Vulpine looked off into space.
"It was a world of art...music...natural wonders...and magic. The skies would dance with a tapestry of colors, the fields and forests were alive with laughing and dancing spirits, *Chuckles*, the ceremonies and parties were wild with life, our warriors trained in arts similar to those of the past of the 'Asian' cultures here."
Vixen smiled then frowned.
"And Imperious took it all away."
Vulpine sighed.
"...Yes...Our last emperor had employed his greatest sorcerers and tacticians to combat that weapon Imperious had used to wipe out most of our people...that gas attacked those with beast blood...eventually the gas was erased...but it had already taken many lives. Not all those left were warriors, but those who were did their best to defend those who remained and themselves."
"How was he able to create such a weapon?"
"That remains a mystery...why do you ask?"
"Because he could create similar weapons to attack other races that defy him."
Vulpine rubbed his chin.
"Yes...I suppose he could."
Vixen raised an eyebrow.
"Do you know what used to stop the gas?"
Vulpine sighed, rubbing the back of his neck.
"I'm afraid not. The gas was spread so suddenly, the emperor reacted out on complete instinct and ordered it gone."
Vixen's face fell slightly.
"I can't say I blame him. His gut reaction was to protect his people, even if he didn't stop to consider what was being used. But how do you know it was targeting beast blood?"
"...Wraith..."
Vixen's eyes narrowed, teeth gritting.
"He boasted how what made us strong was making us sick...it didn't take much to put it together."
Vixen looked at her short claws.
"I should've torn his throat out with these...maybe it would've been poetic justice..."
Vulpine placed a hand on her should, smiling slightly.
"You did what you had to. Your weapon, whatever it is, slew him. Our people would be proud of that as well."
Vixen smiled slightly.
"Still...what happened...never should have...that tyrant's lackey may have died...but he's still alive...plotting...he has to pay for what he did to our people."
Vixen snarled, eyes ablaze.
Vulpine's eyes widened for a moment.
"Are you sure you're a Fox? Not a Tiger?"
The two laughed.
"How many beast lines were there? Father didn't exactly know."
"Many. You have us, the Foxes, of course, the most cunning."
Vixen and Vulpine chuckled.
"The different cats, like the Tigers, some of our fiercest warriors, the common cats, cunning in their own right and nearly fearless, and several other Cats. The Hedgehogs were seemingly prickly yet were mostly shy, the Falcons had farsighted visions, not just in the literal sense. The Bears were protective and big hearted, the Owls were wise and great sorcerers in some form or fashion, the Lions were proud and set an example of great leadership and familial love."
Vixen grinned.
"Than there were the Wolves."
Vixen's ears perked at this.
"Father knew a little about them, he was uncertain about them...but he didn't talk about them much...said there weren't many yet all stood out."
"Yes...the wolves were few in number...they were perhaps the most tied with their bestial blood...but they were respected nearly by all...they had a fierce code of honor...that's why they were so few: they usually gave their lives in defense of our people against many enemies while taking several with them...including the soldiers of Imperious."
"Father seemed to be rather...hesitant when he talked about them though."
"Yes...they were...blessed with the beast blood, some were shapeshifters like I said. They also were intimidating to many despite being more reserved and friendly when around...other races who met us were most frightened by them as the wolves despite their code and reserved nature, still held untameable spirits."
Vixen rubbed her chin.
"Did you know any Wolves personally?"
Vulpine flinched slightly. Vixen's eyes widened, but Vulpine just chuckled.
"Sorry, I couldn't help but remember the last time I made a Wolf mad by mistake."
Vixen chuckled at this, but only for a few moments.
"He was an especially fierce Wolf who took on students of all lines in his teachings of magic and combat...he was...stubborn...but was respected."
Vixen nodded.
"But I have to ask about your friends. I haven't met them all...one...Chavez, I believe, you said was doing something else?"
"Yeah? Off on another task. But you saw what the others could do: agility, pyrokinesis, strength...a diverse group of more than one species...though it seems some humans don't see others similar to them as people...I hope our people didn't have that problem."
"With the revolution, some saw those without political or economic power as lesser."
"Yes...it's terrible. Father only told me so much about our people."
"What did he tell you of these humans?"
"Them he told me much more about. His race is supposed to guard them...I often wondered what would have been if they were meant to guard our people."
Vulpine's eyes narrowed, but Vixen hadn't noticed.
"I guess they deemed human more important."
Vixen's eyes went wide.
"What do you mean?"
Vulpine's face quivered.
"Perhaps whatever power tasked them with protecting humans thought them to be the pinnacle form of life...perhaps the most righteous...or that our people were just lesser beings...just dumb beasts."
Vixen opened her mouth to say something, but nothing came out.
Vulpine sighed.
"I don't know...your...'Father' saved you, that's apparent...but why not the rest of our people? Was his foe's enemy not going after humans a moment of relief? Were they unaware of us? Or did they just not care enough?"
Vixen frowned.
"N-No! I mean...he cares...he cares about me...he speaks about what happened to our world being a tragedy."
"But if it was so tragic...why didn't he try to stop it?"
Vixen was frozen, hands trembling.
"I...I-I don't know..."
-Meanwhile: Unknown Location-
"How long did you say it would take until my strength returns to 100 percent?" Metatron asked as he found himself walking on very shaky feet, using Cassie and Jacob for support.
"Should be only a few more days judging from past experience–" Jacob was interrupted by his former teacher before he could finish.
"'Past experience?'" Metatron began in a very confused tone. "What do you mean by that?" he bluntly asked his former students. Jacob and Cassie exchanged a look with each-other before Cassie spoke up.
"We have a little experience with the void. A very long story made short: after our escape and a few years on the run, we finally where able to use the magic scrolls and artifacts that you ordered us to flee with. One of the scrolls contained a spell that had access to your prison, the void. Granted it was in a different language and it took both of us quite a long time to find the correct translation. But once we accessed the void we where able to successfully travel between dimensions–"
"'Dimensions?' What exactly are you saying?" Metatron asked in a confused tone.
"For starters: we are in a completely different dimension. Second: the void not only served as your prison, but it can also ser ve as the gateway between dimensions, and possibly even greater.." Cassie let that hang as he and Jacob helped Metatron into a sitting position.
"When you say greater, do you mean the multi-verse?" Metatron asked, and that stunned his students. They knew their teacher was wise, but how did he know this when he was trapped for over 15 years. Upon seeing the looks on their faces, he decided to elaborate. "Imperious clearly didn't come from our dimension, nor did Wraith–"
"And how do you know this?" Jacob asked quickly.
"One of our militaries top spies, a fox ironically, reported to our forces that he overheard Wraith inform his troops that Imperious wanted not just our world, but our entire dimension, and the multi-verse around us." Metatron answered quickly. "Based on the information your telling me now, it seems we have our own way to traverse the multi-verse?" Metatron asked quickly.
"If we find the correct passage through the endless void, yes." Cassie answered in a cautious tone.
"Jacob, Cassie, I have a question that's been on my mind. You both informed me that Wraith is dead, but do we know who killed him?" he asked in a curious tone.
"No, we don't." Jacob answered honestly, which opened the door to Metatron's next question.
"Then how do you know he was killed?" Metatron asked as he raised an eyebrow. Cassie and Jacob exchanged a look before Jacob spoke up.
"We found one of Imperious' skeletal warriors attempting to access another dimension in the void. Upon defeating him, we interrogated him and he told us about Wraith's death... and then we killed him." Jacob said darkly, which earned a look of surprise from Metatron, a look of regret from Jacob , and a look of sadness from Cassie. "Rest assured, I made it quick, due to the information he provided, he deserved that much." Jacob added that last part lowly.
"I see." Metatron said after a few seconds of silence.
