-Unknown Location, Over 15 Years Ago-
Cassie held back her tears as much as she could.
Her parents glared at her, eyes burning. Her father, lips quivered.
"How could you do this?! You gave into your urges and look what happened!"
Cassie didn't respond at first, her claws digging into the sack that contained all her worldly possessions. She didn't want to look at her parents, but she did. Her mother's face was frozen with disappointment and disgust.
"You destroyed your future...for what? A boy?!"
"It was natural!"
Cassie's father scoffed.
"You have no respect for the gods!"
"The gods?!"
Cassie's tears slowly disappeared, her eyes narrowing.
"How do you know you some of those zealots you follow aren't misinterpreting the words of the gods...or just twisting them to 'justify' their beliefs?"
Her father's eyes went wide and his frown grew worse.
"How dare you."
Cassie's eyes filled with tears, but she didn't vocally cry. Her lip quivered as she glared at him, at them both.
Her mother glared right back.
"We barely managed to secure you salvation...or redemption."
"I did what I wanted. And you made me...made me give away-"
Her mother threw her hand forward, moving to slap her. But Cassie stepped back, hissing.
"You're monsters!"
Her father's fist clenched.
"Be grateful we rid you of your sin and freed the bitch from a life of hate."
Cassie screamed in agony and outrage. Her mother grabbed her shoulders and forcefully threw her out of the house.
"You leave this home! Never come back!"
Cassie's looked up at them from where she laid on the ground. Her father spat at her feet.
"You disgraced us, not just yourself. You aren't our daughter."
Cassie watched as her parents turned back into their house, slamming and locking the door behind them. Cassie's claws dug into the ground and moved her forehead to sit against it. Then...she cried.
-Unknown Location, Present Day-
"You ok, Cassie?" Jacob asked in a concerned tone as Cassie awoke from her slumber, and he couldn't help but notice the tears in her golden eyes.
"I'm fine." Cassie answered in an attempt to ward off her best friends concern. "Why you asking?" she said with a fake smile on her face, but Jacob had seen that smile to many times, and he knew something was up.
"You where muttering in your sleep, and judging from what I heard, you weren't exactly having the best dream." Jacob answered honestly as he took a seat next to her makeshift bed. "Cassie, I've always been there for you, I thought we agreed to tell each-other if something is bothering us?" Jacob questioned his best friend, and with a sad sigh Cassie dropped her smile.
"I keep reliving that memory over and over again." Cassie said in heartbroken tone as a tear dripped down her face. Jacob remained silent, for he knew what memory she was talking about, but he still decided to remain silent and let her speak. "It keeps replaying over and over again in my mind. Every time I think I have it under control, it strikes at a moment of weakness... a moment of weakness... that's what got me there in the first place–"
"No, it wasn't you Cassie." Jacob said in a defiant tone. "Just like you made your choice, they made their choice. Your parents couldn't see their daughter, they could only see their rage and disgust. That's on them, not on you." Jacob said in that still defiant, yet comforting tone.
"I keep thinking, if I hadn't gotten pregnant I still would have had a home–"
"Cassie, I might not have known your parents except for what you told me, but based on what you did tell me, they would've found something to bitch and moan about–" Jacob was interrupted by Metatron clearing his throat.
"Ain't that the truth." Meta said with a sigh as he couldn't help but feel the pain Cassie was going through, having lived through 15 years of memories himself while trapped in the void. "The past can either destroy us, define us, or reconstruct us." Metatron said wisely as he stood up and walked over to Cassie and Jacob. "Jacob, can I have a moment in private with Cassie?" Metatron asked. In response Jacob nodded silently and quickly left the room. "Cassie, I know the hatred you feel for you parents, but they don't even deserve your time thinking about them. None of us are perfect, not to any degree, believe me I know I'm not perfect. But Cassie, you rose above your parents. Think about that for a second, your parents tried to rip you apart and destroy your future. You could have let their words tear you down, but you defied the odds. Cassie, they have no power over you." Metatron said in a calm and comforting tone. Which caused Cassie to smile, as she gave her former teacher a big hug, which Metatron returned. Despite what they both had been through, they still where family, and that made Cassie smile brightly.
